Walthamstow are in Monday s 1 st Qualifying Round draw after a battling away win at Felixstowe & Walton United. James Peagram scored the all-important goal that won it for the ESL side in the 17 th minute. Saffron Walden Town are also in the hat after they came through their all-esl Preliminary match-up with Hoddesdon Town. Craig Calver, Greg Strong, Ryan Fleming and the always seems to be scoring of late Charlie Portway scored a goal each for the Bloods; Alex Warman provided the Hoddesdon goal in a game watched by a crowd of 293 people. The other all-esl tie saw Takeley knock out local rivals Stansted. A solitary Mitchell Das goal was enough to put his side into the next round. Sporting Bengal United will at least know who they could meet in the 1 st Qualifying Round by the time Wednesday s replay at Mile End Stadium comes around. A wonderful goal from Steven Carvell in the 20 th minute gave the Bengal Tigers a deserved lead, and they had plenty of chances to extend that lead throughout the rest of the game. 2 swivel and fire home an equaliser in the 65 th minute. Sporting Bengal can take credit for the way they dominated much of the play against their Bostik North rivals but must also be rueing not taking all their chances; still they have a second attempt in midweek with their Cup dream still alive. The same cannot be said for Leyton Athletic who made a quick return to last season s ESL Champions Great Wakering Rovers and were promptly set packing with a 4-1 defeat. Stephen Butterworth rifled home a penalty in each half, with Simon Jones and Jason Ring also providing goals in the second half. Dwade James did actually level up for Leyton in the 20 th minute but in the end they succumbed to the same score line as they had done when they visited Rovers on League business last April. West Essex travelled up to Heybridge Swifts but were gunned down by Jody Brown s men inside the opening 45 minutes. Matthew Price opened the Swifts account in the 8 th minute; Samuel Bantick then doubled that lead in the 17 th minute; which was then further extended when Price added another goal to his tally via a penalty. Stanway Rovers also gave a good account of themselves as they bowed out to Haringey Borough, recent ESL Champions but now mixing it in the Premier Division of the Bostik League. Stanway finally succumbed to a Chinedu McKenzie goal in the 69 th minute. Hullbridge Sports were knocked out in even more heartbreaking fashion as Dan Okah fired them into a 40 th minute lead that they held onto until the 82 nd. Shaun Avis having brought the tie level then inflicted even more hurt on Hullbridge as he scored Newmarket Town s winner deep into stoppage time. And St. Margaretsbury s FA Cup run is also over for another year after they were beaten 3-1 by Long Melford. The hosts scored their goals via Anthony Waugh, Hassan Ally and Steve Adams. Tom Cowell notched the St. Margaretsbury consolation in the closing stages of the game. One Premier Division game was played as Enfield welcomed Sawbridgeworth Town to the Harlow Arena and then sent them back up the road with a 2-1 defeat. Dan Chambers twice gave Enfield the lead, the first time in the 59 th minute, but on that occasion they held it for only five minutes before Lewis Roberts replied. However Chambers then popped up again, this time in the 87 th minute and this time his goal not only gave his side the lead once again, but also proved to the be the goal that gave his Enfield side their first league win of the campaign. What are blocked hours? Blocked hours are set time periods occurring on a Saturday when it is prohibited to broadcast any form of live football. Blocked hours for Season are as follows: Every Saturday occurring during each period set out below 4 August September :45-17:15 15 September October :45-17:15 20 October November :45-17:15 24 November March :45-17:15 30 March May :45-17:15 CentreSpot Essex Senior League. 5 Why do we have blocked hours? Blocked hours have been in place for many years in England and are permitted by Article 48 of the UEFA Statutes. The rationale for blocked hours includes: To ensure spectators are not deterred from attending or participating in amateur or youth matches. In parallel to the above, protecting clubs' revenue generated by gate receipts. To protect the interests of football within each national association. For the avoidance of doubt, clubs are not permitted to broadcast games in the periods set out above, but may record fixtures for later analysis or highlights purposes. The recent "ifollow" initiative by the EFL relates to matches occurring outside of blocked hours. What are the consequences of broadcasting or live streaming matches during blocked hours? This could result in disciplinary action against a Club or individuals. Clubs need to publicise this on their websites, social media accounts and programmes. 6 From The Archives A Delve Into ESL History By Robert Errington The First Vase Competition Ended Up Being Lifted by Hoddesdon Town The FA CHALLENGE VASE has been mentioned many a time in ESL history thanks to the mighty Billericay Town who first put the League on the National Map with their successive wins in 1975/76 and 1976/77 and Stansted s success in 1984 is also etched in ESL history. But the addition this season of Hoddesdon Town gives me the opportunity to reach back to 1974/75, the very first season of the competition after the demise of the FA AMATEUR CUP. Our main two clubs that season were Champions, Billericay Town and runners up Basildon United but their success was short lived thanks to the eventual winners Hoddesdon Town. That first season started with a plain and simple First Round and included Annan Athletic, who now play in the Scottish League they were beaten by Wallsend Town. The interestingly named Stork were defeated by Lostock Gralam; City of Norwich School Old Boys Union lost to Stamford Town, Hazells were beaten by Tring Town, Willesden (beaten by Harefield United), Viney St Swithins (lost to Evesham Town), Chloride Recreation (Glossop won that) and Forest Green Rovers, now in the Football League, received a bye against Avon but then took no further part when Chipping Norton Town beat them 3-1. Hoddesdon Town started their run in that First Round with a 2-1 win against Epping then in Round two met Billericay Town who had previously beaten Saffron Walden Town 3-0. The Third Round or last 64 meant a trip to Basildon United and they won that 2-1. As Coggeshall Town were beaten 0-1 by Clacton Town, they were the last remaining ESL clubs that season. Town s win meant a short trip to meet Baldock Town where another close 2-1 win ensued. So to the Fifth Round and another home tie, this time with Molesey which ended 1-0. So it was now Quarter Final time and mighty Farnborough Town were dispatched 2-0. The Semi-Final loomed and a two legged match with Leicestershire based Friar Lane Old Boys 1-1 and 2-0. In the meantime, Epsom & Ewell were up against Stamford Town (the club that Stansted beat) and that was 0-0 and 2-1. So, the first ever Final, held at Wembley Stadium and in front of 10,000, Hoddesdon Town took a 2-0 half time lead against EPSOM & EWELL and held on to a 2-1 success, lifting the first ever FA CHALLENGE VASE. The team that afternoon was as follows: Galvin, Green, Hickey, Maybury, Stevenson, Wilson, Bishop, Picking, Sedgwick,Nathan,and Schofield. In Season more clubs entered so there was a Preliminary Round but Hoddesdon s success did not last beyond the First Round with Clacton Town beating them 1-0, which left Blllericay to take over the glory!
