Bowers, who came on as a substitute for the injured Charlie Kendall only three minutes before, headed home a Joe Skeels free kick in the 44 th minute; and then with four minutes remaining Barton headed home a second for the Bees to seal the points and see them maintain fourth spot. 2 FC Romania 3 West Essex 1 FCR are now top of the tree after they came from behind to defeat West Essex at Theobalds Lane. The opening half hour saw the visitors create the best chance when Michael Mignot s header just went past the post, however five minutes before the break Tom Macleod fed James Bromley who lifted the ball over the keeper to give the visitors the lead. Romania fought back to level on half time though when a Florin Pop shot trickled across the goal and dropped in off the post. The Wolves went on to take the points as Sergiu Maximov and Vladut Sighiartau hit the target in the second half. West Essex are 9 th after this result. Hullbridge Sports 2 Wadham Lodge 2 Lodge will be the happier after they held Hullbridge to a gritty 2-2 draw at Lower Road. A quiet goalless opening half, which saw the hosts waste several good chances, then saw a second half that produced four goals. The deadlock was broken by the visitors five minutes into the second period when Danny Francis lobbed Jamie Merralls, however the hosts levelled just four minutes later when Callum Ibe rounded a defender before firing past Chapman. And just past the hour mark Sports grabbed the lead when Luke Hornsley laid in full back Matt Rose who slotted past Chapman, but the visitors found an equaliser in the 71 st minute when Abdoulai Njai fired an effort beyond Merralls into the far corner. A frustrating day for Hullbridge then who remain in the bottom four although do go above Burnham Ramblers into 18 t. Wadham Lodge meanwhile remain second bottom, two points further back. Southend Manor 0 Ilford 3 Ilford put in a solid performance to see off Southend Manor at Southchurch Park, maintaining their 7th position in the table. For Manor it was a poor day at the office, and they remain in 12 th spot, only seven points above the bottom four. George Whitelock, Liam Burgess and a gifted own goal were the sources of the Ilford goals. There was some positive news for the club though as Ellis Skidmore, who suffered that terrible injury against Hackney Wick last week, has undergone surgery and is now starting his recovery; no tendon damage which is great news. We now wish him well over the coming weeks and the club look forward to having him back in a Manor shirt in the near future. Tower Hamlets 2 Stansted 1 Goals from Luke With and Wale Odedoyin saw Tower Hamlets overturn a half time deficit into a win against Stansted at Mile End. The visitors took the lead midway through the first half when Olly Fortune stuck home with his left foot to make it two goals in as many games, however With headed Hamlets level in the 57 th minute before Odedoyin netted a stoppage time winner to hand the hosts all three points, lifting them into 8th above West Essex. 3 Waltham Forest 1 Enfield Enfield are up to 13 th now and five points above the bottom four after they continued their recent fine form with victory at Kitchener Road against Waltham Forest. Ayo Odukoya put the visitors ahead in the 14 th minute but saw Christian Owusu level for the hosts eight minutes before half time. But just before the hour mark Dan Chambers netted what proved to be the winner for the Harlow based side, and it leaves Forest still just one place and two points above the bottom four. 6 From The Archives A Delve Into ESL History By Robert Errington 1983/84 Stansted Team Photo the team that went on to win the FA Vase! As the F A Vase reached a very important stage this Saturday I am taking a little time to reflect on the good days since Stansted's win in 1984 and they now seem such a long time ago - and they are, for my story this week involves two years; the first being 25 years ago in 1993, when the equivalent Saturday to this weekend was 13th February, with the Vase Quarter Final set for 27th. That Quarter Final was to be Canvey Island v Bilston in which our club were successful and went on to be beaten by Tiverton Town who scored in 2 minutes in the semi-final, which changed Canvey's tactics for travel to never going on the same day as a major match ever again. Fortress Park Lane in the second leg with a 0-2 deficit was a thrilling match but the 1-0 win not good enough and Tiverton Town went on to lose at Wembley to Bridlington Town in the Final. On the domestic front Southend Manor progressed into the Final of the Essex Senior Trophy with a 2-0 victory over Ford United and went on to win in the Final. Concern was felt for East Ham United who were 1-0 up against Heybridge Swifts in the 87th minute and it finished 3-1 thanks to Billy Powell. All this in front of just 9 fans: did they hope such entertainment would bring in more next time! Micky Phillips at Sawbridgeworth Town will not thank me for reminding him that 25 years ago his Reserve side were in second place behind Basildon United. Basildon were hopeful of returning to the Diadora League. David Stittle of Brentwood was the leading scorer and the teams no longer with us were Bowers United, Canvey Island, Brentwood, Romford, Ford United (now Redbridge),Maldon Town, East Ham United, Concord Rangers, Eton Manor and there was also the original Woodford Town, so that is 10 clubs out of 17!!! Spearheading the Canvey attack was Andy Jones and former Fulham favourite Tony Mahoney. We now jump to and to 16th February and all eyes were on the F A Vase draw that saw Concord Rangers matched with Lowestoft Town of the Eastern Counties League - a game that was see them lose to the eventual finalists, who were then in turn beaten by Kirkham & Wesham (now CentreSpot Essex Senior League. 7 restyled as AFC Fylde and playing the National League) in the Final. That Vase Final game was refereed by Andy D'Urso of Billericay. Mauritius Sports and Pennant and Beaumont Athletic were in the League and Barkingside led with an incredible 12 clean sheets in 19 games from Enfield 1893, having beaten London APSA 3-0. Danny Heale of Concord Rangers was the leading scorer and his side beat Basildon United 8-0 in a league game. And all that was 10 year ago, doesn't time fly!
