1 CentreSpot The official news bulletin of the Essex Senior Football League Season 2018/19 Issue 19 Sunday 9th December Hullbridge and Redbridge Knocked Out Of FA Vase Friday ESL Premier Division Woodford Town 4 Stanway Rovers 1 Jordan Sanderson and Temi Babalola netted braces as Woodford went just three points behind leaders Stansted in fifth spot after they thrashed Stanway Rovers at The Harlow Arena. 2 before half time. And when Sanderson added another three minutes later, the hosts were well in control at the break. Babalola then made it four twenty minutes into the second period and although Tyler Harris netted a consolation for the visitors they are now thirteenth after their tenth league defeat of the campaign. Saturday Buildbase FA Vase Third Round Proper Hullbridge Sports 0 Newport Pagnell Town 2 Sports are out of the FA Vase after they fell to defeat to Quarter-Finalists of two years ago Newport Pagnell Town. The visitors netted the opener on the hour mark through Dom Lawless and then sealed their passage into the Last 32 of the competition when Harry Stratton netted the visitors second. Redbridge 0 Chertsey Town 5 The Motormen crashed out of the FA Vase after they were outclassed by a terrific Chertsey Town side at Oakside. Sam Murphy netted the opener midway through the first half before he added a second eight minutes before the break. And Murphy completed his treble nine minutes after the restart before Jake Baxter made it four just past the hour mark, and then Dale Binns netted Town s fifth a final goal with just under twenty minutes to go to cruise into Round Four of the competition. ESL Premier Division Enfield 2 Tower Hamlets 4 Hamlets continued their recent resurgence with a terrific win at Enfield, Luke with netted after eighteen minutes to give Hamlets the lead and then he doubled their lead just before the half hour mark. And when Iljhal Currie-Wilson added a third just past the half hour mark the visitors were three goals up at the break. The hosts then briefly harboured hopes of the comeback when Dabn Chambers pulled one back seven minutes into the second period before Michael Opoku added a second for the hosts just a minute later, but Kris Queeley then netted a fourth for Hamlets on the hour mark to thwart any hopes of such a comeback, and it meant the visitors climbed up to 14 th and above their opponents who slipped down to 17 th. Hoddesdon Town 0 West Essex 2 West Essex grabbed all three points with victory at Lowfield against Hoddesdon Town, Tom Woodbridge gave them the lead nine minutes before the break before Izzy Ogedi-Uzokwe netted a second just two minutes later. 3 Saffron Walden Town 5 Ilford 1 Walden are now just two points off the lead in fourth after they thrashed Ilford at Catons Lane, Tom Lakin opened the scoring after seven minutes before Lewis Francis doubled their lead from the spot in the 32 nd minute. Marcus Crowther, who netted in their midweek defeat to Billericay Town, added a third right on half time before Dan Trendall made it four two minutes into the second period. Connor Kain did pull one back for The Foxes soon after but the last laugh went to Walden and Trendall, adding a fifth with nine minutes remaining and defeat sees Ilford slip a place to tenth. Southend Manor 0 Takeley 1 Coby Miles netted in the 14 th minute as Takeley continued their long unbeaten run with victory at Southchurch Park against Southend Manor. The visitors are just a point behind the leaders with a game in hand in third whilst Manor remain in the bottom three. Sporting Bengal United 1 Leyton Athletic 1 Mario Gjini netted with seventeen minutes remaining to see visitors Leyton Athletic grab a decent point away at Mile End against Sporting Bengal United. Jay Knight gave the hosts a nineteenth minute lead but Leyton saw Gjini net that leveller to make sure the game ended all square, leaving the hosts in seventh and eight points off the top five now, whilst Athletic remain second bottom but now eight points above Barkingside and with a much better goal difference. St Margaretsbury 1 Clapton 0 Charncey Dash netted in the 16 th minute to help see The Bury Boys grab victory at home to Clapton at The Recreation Ground. It sees the hosts climb a place into ninth whilst The Tons are now down in 15 th following another defeat, their tenth of the season. Stansted 2 Sawbridgeworth Town 2 The Airportmen are a point clear at the top after a dramatic ending at Hargrave Park saw them come from two goals down to grab a share of the spoils against local rivals Sawbridgeworth Town. Joe Wright gave The Robins a 65 th minute lead and when Julien Lloyd doubled their lead five minutes later the visitors look odds on to stun their hosts, but James Turvey netted with six minutes to go to reduce the arrears before adding his and Stansted s second three minutes later to salvage un unlikely point for the hosts. 4 From The Archives A Delve Into ESL History By Robert Errington DECEMBER THE START OF OUR WEEKLY NEWS On December 1 st 1984 a new concept for the Essex Senior League was born, a weekly news-sheet that encompassed Fixtures, Results, Tables, scorers and News. This superseded a page previously sent to clubs only with results. It was not until some years later that Dave Osborne of Halstead Town came up with the idea of Centre Spot. In that first week of December in 1984, Stansted were the F A Vaseholders and had already started their new campaign with a bye to the second round where they met Brimsdown Rovers on 1st and drew 1 1 in front of 200 but abandoned in extra time. The replay went the way of Stansted 2 1 in front of 150, which meant a third-round tie with Isthmian League,Finchley at Summers Lane but that ended in a 2-1 defeat with an attendance of 159 on December 22 nd. The editorial suggested that Finchley were one of the favourites but was a bit out with the prediction as they were immediately beaten in the next round by Sussex County League Steyning, who in turn went out to eventual winners Halesowen Town. We have digressed a bit and return to that first edition of 1 st December and in the seven League and two F A Vase games, of the sixteen-club constitution, only Sawbridgeworth Town are still with us!! Brightlingsea United 0 1 Bowers United: Canvey Island 1 0 Witham Town: Chelmsford Reserves 3 4 Brentwood: Ford United 0 0 East Ham United: Halstead Town 2 2 East Thurrock United: Maldon Town 3 2 Eton Manor and Sawbridgeworth Town 0 2 Coggeshall Town. The other team to play were Wivenhoe Town who beat Tring 1 0 in the F A Vase. Mark Farthing of Wivenhoe Town was leading the scorers list with 15 from Jamie Reeves of Stansted on 12, whilst Kevin Newbury of Maldon Town had joined Jamie on the back of scoring all 6 in a 6 1 win on November 10 th v Brightlingsea United. On December 1 st, Stansted were leading the table from Chelmsford City Reserves Two games were played on Boxing Day both local derbies with Brightlingsea United and Wivenhoe sharing a goal apiece and Witham Town beating Coggeshall Town 3 1 at West Street. There was no change at the top of the table. Eventually, on Thursday 16 th May, in a very tight finish, Maldon Town were three points behind leaders Witham Town so needed to win at Bowers United having a superior goal difference and win they did 1-0. 5 Mark Farthing was joined by Don Cutmore of Halstead Town as leading scorers with 22 apiece. Finally in our look at December 1984 and in the last edition before the New Year of 1985 a very significant announcement was made:- The Essex Senior League Management Committee have announced that they are delaying, for one year, the possible setting up of a second division. This is because the Essex County FA s final decision on forming an intermediate stage of football in the County will not be known until mid-february Suffice to say, with the formation of the Eastern Senior League South this season, it only took thirtyfour years for reason to prevail! ESL Did You Know One week before season began, three intermediate clubs were denied membership to the ESL by the FA having been elected at the AGM. They were to play in the Reserve Division. Earls Colne, St Osyth and Loughton Athletic were the unfortunate trio. St Osyth were allowed to play friendlies and Shield games, Loughton Athletic became Woodford Town Reserves which was accepted and Earls Colne went back to local football. On April 28th 1984 Stansted FC won the FA Vase beating Stamford at Wembley. On Tuesday May 1st they won the League Cup beating Brentwood 1-0, then on Thursday 3rd beat Chelmsford City Reserves in a League game 1-0 but lost 0-2 to Bowers United on Saturday 5th only to recover big time by Wednesday 9th May 1984 when they travelled to Coggeshall Town and by beating them 15-1 broke the all time Home and Away scoring record.
