The mental is to the physical as 4 is to 1. Everyone has talented players. What seperates good teams from great teams and contenders from champions is mental toughness. Mental toughness is everything to us, and I m proud of this team for embracing 4 to 1. - Chris Beard PAGE TEXAS TECH MEN S ON TWITTER & INSTAGRAM #4TO1 #WRECKEM

4 LAST TIME OUT OKLAHOMA 84, TEXAS TECH 75 01/14/17 BIG PERFORMANCES PUSH OKLAHOMA PAST MEN S BASKETBALL, Keenan Evans and Zach Smith registered 16 points apiece, but Texas Tech was handed an setback by Oklahoma on Saturday at the Lloyd Noble Center. The loss dropped the Red Raiders (13-4, 2-3 Big 12) into a sixth place tie with Kansas State in the Big 12 standings, while Oklahoma (7-9, 1-4 Big 12) ended a seven-game losing streak of its own. Smith nearly corralled his sixth double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds after being limited to 26 minutes of action due to foul trouble. He was 7-of-10 from the floor and has reached double figures in 11 of his last 13 outings. Evans tacked on 16 points, five rebounds and two assists to bring his run of 10-plus to a career-long six consecutive games. Anthony Livingston secured 14 points aided by a trio of three-pointers, while Devon Thomas pumped in 10 of his Big 12 career-best 12 points during the second half. Thomas also added four assists versus one turnover and picked up a pair of steals. Aaron Ross chipped in eight of Texas Tech s 13 points off the bench whereas Justin Gray posted four points, three assists, three rebounds and two blocks in a limited 17 minutes. Gray was dealt his fourth foul early in the second half. Texas Tech vs Oklahoma 01/14/17 7:40 p.m. at Norman, Okla. (Lloyd Noble Center) Texas Tech (2-3 B12) Texas Tech connected on 29-for-61 from the floor but only was able to knock down 6-for-25 on its three-point attempts. The Red Raiders hit on 11-for-14 at the free throw, held a advantage in paint points but were outrebounded by a margin. Oklahoma sank 25-of-56 of its shots and were 4-of-14 from the three-point line. The Sooners used their aggressive play to live at the charity stripe where they drained 30-of-37 fueled by a 20-of-26 clip during the second half. Jordan Woodard racked up 27 points in his first start back after he missed a five-game stretch due to injury. He did his damage at the line where he was a flawless 14-of-14 and filled the box score with seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Woodard s running mate was Rashard Odomes who amassed 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The duo combined for a 15-of-27 shooting clip. Khadeem Lattin and Kameron McGusty managed 10 points each for the Sooners. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED The opening four minutes featured three ties and three lead changes before Oklahoma turned a 9-7 hole into a lead with 17 of 21 points during a 6:18 span. 11 Smith, Zach f Livingston, Anthony f Thomas, Devon g Gray, Justin g Evans, Keenan g Millinghaus, Shadell Stevenson, Niem Ross, Aaron Brandsma, Thomas Temple, Matthew Team Totals FG % 1st Half: % 3FG % 1st Half: % FT % 1st Half: % 2nd half: % 2nd half: % 2nd half: % Game: % Game: % Game: % Oklahoma (1-4 B12) 3 12 Lattin, Khadeem f Buford, Dante f Odomes, Rashard g Woodard, Jordan g McGusty, Kameron g Strong-Moore,Darrion James, Christian McNeace, Jamuni Freeman, Matt Doolittle, Kristian Cole, C.J Team Totals FG % 1st Half: % 3FG % 1st Half: % FT % 1st Half: % 2nd half: % 2nd half: % 2nd half: % Game: % Game: % Game: % 4 Trailing at the 6:36 mark, the Red Raiders would make their move ignited by nine consecutive points to pull within one possession. Smith kickstarted the spurt by showing off his athleticism on a tipin through traffic. Then, Gray found a cutting Thomas for a layup. Livingston hit a runner after being fouled for a traditional three-point play before Smith dialed up a deep two-ball on the left wing to make it with 2:45 left. A key play came late in the stanza with 1:09 remaining when Woodard stole an inbounds pass in the backcourt and was fouled on a layup. He made a quartet of free throws inside the final 69 seconds which gave Oklahoma a halftime spread. The Sooners kept the momentum and expanded their lead back to double figures at during the opening three minutes of the second half. Texas Tech would mount another rally and draw back to with 10:16 to go capped by a Shadell Millinhaus driving layup off a baseline drive. Other key sequences to spark the run were three layups from Thomas, and a Thomas assist to Livingston for a triple. The Sooners would rely on the Odomes and Woodard to bring home their first Big 12 win. The duo accounted for 20 of the team s closing 25 points to finish off the nine-point win. FROM THE BENCH WITH COACH BEARD We got beat by a better team tonight. Oklahoma played well. They guarded us. They spread us out. Their best players stepped up. They were an inspired team looking for their first Big 12 win. Their best player was back in the starting lineup. Obviously we would have liked to have played better. I m not going to sit here and say that that was the reason we lost. We lost tonight because Oklahoma outplayed us. It is really hard to stay in front of Woodard. He s one of the best players in the Big 12. I have so much respect for him. To come back from an injury like that, and it was obvious to me that he wasn t going to let his team lose tonight. Woodard, was special... Here s a guy that has gotten better from year one, two, three to four. He s just a tough matchup. He can really shoot the ball. We were so scared of him shooting that we tried to go over things. When you go over things, he s just hard to keep in front of. I thought we were on our heels. I have to go back and watch the film. What was most concerning to me was that it seemed like from where I was sitting that every loose ball Oklahoma got. I thought that they went and got fouled. I thought the officiating was fine. I just felt that the more aggressive team won. Victory favors the more aggressive team. Again, hats off to Oklahoma. We got outrebounded. We got beat on the 50/50 balls. We ll just have to get back to practice and try to fix some of these things. Officials: Joe DeRosa, Rick Crawford, Kerby Sitton Technical fouls: Texas Tech-None. Oklahoma-None. Collins misfired on a three-ball on TCU s next possession, and Ross nailed two free throws to capture his new career-high in points with 30.3 seconds to go. Gotcher added another foul shot to salt away the seven-point victory. TIMEOUT WITH TUBBY It was a hard fought game. I m very impressed with TCU. They ve played great basketball all season long. It gets a little dicey when you only have one win in the conference like we did and they did coming into the game. I thought our bench depth was the difference tonight. I was really impressed with our defensive effort which is something we ve struggled with over the last few games. It s a huge win for our team. We ve been struggling from the three-point line, but I thought we were able to make some early shots tonight. The right guys were making shots. The reason we won the game tonight was because Justin and Aaron knocked down their open three s. I thought we really pushed the ball up the court in transition, and that helped a lot as well. The bench was the difference. That group came in early during the first half did some great things and set the tempo. They created an up-tempo style of play, and we put more pressure on them. I thought they did a great job defensively as well. Our bench stepped up, played well and everyone gave us valuable minutes. Texas Tech TCU Last FG - TTU 2nd-00:42, TCU 2nd-04:16. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Trailing at halftime, the Red Raiders ripped off 18 of the opening 22 points of the second half to turn the tables and take a advantage with 13:01 remaining. Tech came out clicking on all cylinders and connected on eight of its first 10 shots. Conversely, the Red Raiders forced TCU into a 1-of-9 effort. Evans drove and dish to Smith for a layup to kickstart the flurry. Gotcher canned a pair of triples between an Evans runner in transition to pull Texas Tech within at the 17:23 mark. After Evans was handed his third foul, Thomas kept the momentum going by using a Matthew Temple screen for a layup. Then, Temple found Smith for a layup on a high-low play to knot the score at with 14:38 left. Ross rattled home an 8-foot runner in the lane with the lefthand late in the shot clock. Thomas put the finishing touches on the spurt with a steal and lob pass to a high-flying Smith for the two-handed jam. All square at with 9:06 to go, Ross dialed up a pair of free throws to put the Red Raiders ahead. Gray went coastto-coast for a layup off a steal. He was fouled and added the free throw for the traditional three-point play. Gotcher split his foul shots to give Tech a advantage at the 8:30 mark. TCU trimmed the margin down to two points on four occasions, the latest at on a Collins deep three-pointer on the left wing with 1:07 remaining. Following a Tech timeout, Evans had his jumper blocked. Ross recovered the ball but missed a 12-foot jumper on the right wing. Smith came soaring in from the weak side for the tipin to push the Red Raiders back ahead by two possessions with 26 seconds on the clock. TIMEOUT WITH TUBBY I m really proud of how our kids competed tonight. We didn t have our best game but a lot of it had to do with TCU. They came in ready to play, and I m certainly impressed. I know that Trent Johnson s teams play hard, physical and very aggressive. We had to match their intensity. I thought that early in the game - it wasn t that we weren t playing hard; they (TCU) were just hitting some shots. I m just really proud of our guys. They re believing in themselves - believing in the system and executing. A lot of guys logged a lot of minutes tonight. This was a different routine for us. We didn t have that extra day off. I could tell our guys were a little fatigued, but we regrouped. There s nothing easy in this league, and you ve got to come ready to play every night. We got outstanding play and scoring from Zach (Smith) and Aaron (Ross). I m very pleased with this win. After we talked about the halftime adjustments we had to make, we talked about establishing a presence and a tempo to start the second half. We got a couple drives to the basket. Keenan was very aggressive in taking the ball to the basket. We really stepped up our defense. I didn t really think we caught up that quickly. It was within the offense, and we weren t turning them over much. They only had seven turnovers in the game. We just picked up our defensive intensity and limited their second shots, which was critical. We challenged every shot and every pass in the second half. 12 SEASON SERIES TCU 67, TEXAS TECH 62 03/09/16 BIG 12 TOURNAMENT MEN S BASKETBALL ELIMINATED BY TCU AT BIG 12 TOURNAMENT, Zach Smith secured his first career double-double against a Big 12 opponent with 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, but Texas Tech was dealt a loss by TCU during Wednesday s opening round of the Big 12 Tournament at the Sprint Center. The Red Raiders (19-12) have dropped their first game at the Big 12 Tournament in three straight seasons. TCU (12-20) advances to face No. 9 West Virginia in Thursday s quarterfinal round. For Smith, he was 5-of-10 from the floor and has reached double figures in six of his last nine outings. The 15 rebounds was a program-record for a Big 12 Tournament game. The previous mark was 14 shared by Gionet Cooper against Kansas State in 1998 and Andre Emmett versus Oklahoma State in Smith also matched a career-best with three steals and added two assists. Justin Gray tucked away 10 of his 13 points during the opening half. He tacked on five rebounds and two steals over a season s long 34 minutes of court time. Toddrick Gotcher scored all nine of his points during the second half but was bottled up for a 3-of-10 shooting clip. Devaugntah Williams secured six points and a season-high five assists whereas Keenan Evans added five points and two assists. Texas Tech was 25-of-63 from the floor, 5-of-18 from threepoint territory and 7-of-11 at the foul line. The 11 free throw attempts was Tech s second-lowest total of the season. The Red Raiders amassed a rebounding advantage and scored 26 of the game s 44 paint points. TCU connected on a 20-for-47 shooting performance and buried 10-of-21 from beyond the three-point line. The Horned Frogs knocked down 17-for-23 at the charity stripe and attempted 17 of their 23 foul shots after halftime. Brandon Parrish notched 15 points followed by Vlad Brodziansky s 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Malique Trent turned in 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Horned Frogs. TCU responded with 15 of the next 19 points to secure a lead midway through the first half. Collins and Parish sparked the Frogs and combined for a trio of three-pointers. The two teams played within a single possession for the rest of the half. The Red Raiders took a halftime edge as Williams found Smith for a midrange jumper on the left baseline to beat the buzzer. Much like the first half, Tech started strong and extended the lead to at the 17:55 mark after five quick points courtesy of Gotcher. TCU charged back with a 13-0 spurt over the next 4:31 to take its largest lead at The flurry was ignited by Parrish and Brodziansky triples and capped by a JD Miller dunk off a steal. The Red Raiders worked their way back to even at with 11:07 remaining after consecutive layups from Williams, Evans and Odiase. The score was deadlocked for the 10th time at after a Smith runner with 1:18 left. The Horned Frogs received a Brodziansky layup and a traditional three-point play from Trent to regain a edge with 34.3 seconds to go. Norense Odiase registered 10 points and six rebounds in his first extended action after he missed a 12-game stretch due to a foot injury. The Red Raiders almost forced TCU into a five-second count on the ensuing inbounds play, but the Frogs were granted their final timeout. Collins sealed the five-point win with a trio of free throws. TIMEOUT WITH TUBBY Certainly, I want to commend TCU. Coach Johnson had his team ready to play. Things just didn t go well, we didn t shoot the ball well. When that happens, we have a tough time. But I really was impressed with Zach (Smith). He really came ready to play. It was a disappointment, but again we got outplayed and outhustled and probably outcoached. The body of work we ve put in throughout the year, the strength of schedule and the wins we ve had, I think we ve got a very good shot of getting in (the NCAA Tournament). We ll have to see, but we didn t help ourselves tonight obviously. But again, TCU, you get in a tournament like this, a lot of teams get beat in the first -- somebody s going to lose. We just didn t have it tonight. FG % 1st Half: % 3FG % 1st Half: % FT % 1st Half: % 2nd half: % 2nd half: % 2nd half: % Officials: Mike Stuart, Gerry Pollard, Bert Smith Technical fouls: TCU-None. We are proud and excited to hire a coach of Chris caliber, Hocutt said. Our program achieved tremendous success this year and I see that as something Chris will build upon and take us to even further heights. We are thrilled to have him back home at Texas Tech. Beard guided Little Rock to a historic turnaround in fueled by 30 victories, which was a program single season record and Sun Belt single season mark. The Trojans claimed the Sun Belt regular season and tournament titles en route to the program s fifth NCAA Tournament bid. Little Rock overcame a 14-point deficit during the final five minutes of the second half and won an double overtime thriller over No. 12-ranked and fifth-seeded Purdue in the NCAA Tournament. The Trojans also registered road victories over San Diego State, Tulsa and DePaul to spark a 10-0 regular season start. The 10-game winning streak to start the season matched a Little Rock program record. Beard s 30-5 record in his only season at Little Rock was a 15-game improvement from a campaign prior to his arrival. The 15-game improvement was tied for the NCAA s top spot in , while his 30 victories was tied for sixth by a first-year Division I head coach. Beard spent two seasons at Angelo State from where he secured NABC South Central Region and Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year after he guided the Rams to a program record-setting 28 wins and the program s first NCAA Division II Sweet 16 appearance in Angelo State began the season with a 17-0 record and finished with a No. 19 national ranking.
