Tonight s quarterfinal matchup heralds a new season for Jim Crews squad, which enters having dropped its last nine contests. Army s most recent victory was an road win at arch rival Navy on Jan. 22. This winter, Bucknell (23-4), seeking to repeat as tournament champ and earn its second consecutive trip to the NCAAs, became the first team in the Patriot League s 16-year existence to post an unblemished regular-season league mark. The Bison, winners of 11 straight over Army, are looking to continue a trend that has seen the tourney s top seed reach the title contest during each of the event s first 15 years. 2 BUCKNELL (23-4, 14-0) After running the table and becoming the first team in the Patriot League s 16-year existence to finish the regular sesason with an unblemished league mark, Bucknell clearly enters this year s postseason tournament as the favorite. The Bison are hoping to secure their second straight tourney title, as well as the accompanying NCAA berth. Center Chris McNaughton (12.7 ppg.), the league s field goal percentage leader at.567, leads three players who average in double figures for the Bison. Charles Lee (12.7 ppg., 6.1 rpg.), voted the league s Player of the Year earlier this week, ranks eighth in the PL in scoring and second in rebounding. Kevin Bettencourt (12.0 ppg.) boasts a team-high 61 three-point buckets. Point guard Abe Badmus (7.2 ppg., 3.5 rpg., 3.89 apg.) and Darren Mastropaolo (3.7 ppg.) round out the starting five. Donald Brown (6.4 ppg.), Jason Vegotsky (4.4 ppg.) and John Griffin (4.2 ppg.) are among head coach Pat Flannery s most reliable bench performers. Flannery earned his third career PL Coach of the Year honor earlier this week as well. Last Bucknell Win: 70-47, Feb. 25, 2006 (Lewisburg, Pa.) ARMY-BUCKNELL: FIRST MEETING Charles Lee scored 19 points and Chris McNaughton and Abe Badmus added 10 points apiece as Bucknell pulled away from a pesky Army team to earn a Patriot League victory at Christl Arena. Bucknell used two key runs, one in the first half and one in the second frame. With the game knotted at with 11:25 to play, Bucknell outscored Army 14-4 over the next 6:45 to open a cushion with 4:45 left. Freshman guard Jason Vegotsky s three-point basket opened the run, which would ultimately see five Bison find the hoop. Five straight points by the Black Knights a three-pointer by Jarell Brown and a drive down the lane from freshman Dan Borcherdt brought the hosts to within with 4:07 to go, but that would be as close as Army would get down the stretch. Bucknell entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in scoring defense (55.2) and third in field goal percentage defense (.367). Army shot 51.2 percent from the field, the third-highest percentage allowed by the Bison this season. Brown, who finished with a game-high 25 points, ignited Army s offense by shooting 9 of 16 from the floor, including making 4 of 7 treys. Behind the play of Brown and Bates, who combined for 16 points, Army raced out to a 19-9 lead 13 minutes into the contest as the Bison connected on just four of their first 16 shots. But, over the final seven minutes of the half, Bucknell outscored the Black Knights 21-7 to take a edge into the locker room. The first portion of that 21-7 Bucknell surge was keyed by Lee, who turned around a sluggish Bison club at that point in the game by notching three points, three assists and two steals as Bucknell used a 12-2 run to draw even at The Bison shot 61.1 percent in the second half (11 of 18) after hitting just 10 of 26 first-half shots (38.5 percent). The Bison also outrebounded the Black Knights 25-21, with McNaughton snaring six boards and Lee and Darren Mastropaolo adding five apiece. Army s Erik Engstrom pulled down a team-high five boards. ARMY-BUCKNELL: SECOND MEETING Charles Lee scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures as Bucknell recovered from a sluggish start to defeat Army on the final night of the regular season. Kevin Bettencourt added 13 points, John Griffin scored 12 points and Chris McNaughton added 11. Matt Bell led Army with 16 points and Marshall Jackson added a season-high 10. The Bison, leading at the half, scored the first nine points of the second half, over the opening 1:11, to quickly build a 16-point cushion at The Bison, who defeated Army for the 11th consecutive time, ultimately built a 21-point advantage at with 13:32 to play. The lead remained at 21 points, with 9:48 to play, before Army put together one final run, scoring eight unanswered points to claw within with 6:48 left. Jarell ARMY VS. BUCKNELL (PL TOURNEY) PAGE 2 Brown scored five points to lead Army in that surge. However Bucknell scored the game s next six points, all at the foul line, to reclaim a 19- point edge and the Black Knights would get no closer than 17 points down the stretch. Over the game s first 12 minutes, Army crafted a lead before Lee took over. He scored the Bison s final 11 points of the first half, singlehandedly accounting for an 11-3 Bucknell burst that staked the hosts to that intermission cushion. Army freshman Kenny Brewer pulled down a career-high seven rebounds in just his second career start. ARMY IN THE PL TOURNEY The Black Knights enter this year s Patriot League Tournament, the league s 16th postseason affair, with an all-time tourney mark of Army s tournament wins came in successive years as the seventh-seeded Black Knights defeated Bucknell at West Point s Christl Arena in One year later, again as the seventh seed, Army downed Navy in the opening round. The Black Knights have lost their last nine tournament games. ARMY-BUCKNELL TOURNEY HISTORY Army and Bucknell have met four times previously in the Patriot League Tournament, most recently in 2002 when the Bison posted a win at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Md. Overall, Army is 1-3 versus BU in the PL tourney. Army defeated Bucknell at West Point s Christl Arena in 1995, securing its firstever PL tourney verdict. The teams met in each of the league s initial two tournaments, with Bucknell posting a win at Holy Cross Hart Center in 1991 and a victory at Lehigh s Stabler Arena in POSTSEASON IN LEWISBURG Tonight s matchup marks the Black Knights first postseason appearance in Lewisburg, Pa. ARMY S PL TOURNEY SEED HISTORY The Black Knights enter the 2006 Patriot League Tournament as the eighth seed, heralding the fourth time that Army has held that distinction. In addition, the Black Knights have been the fifth seed twice (0-2 record), the sixth seed twice (0-2) and the seventh seed eight times (2-8) during their tenure in the league. Army is winless in its three previous stints as the No. 8 seed. JIM CREWS IN THE POSTSEASON Over his first 20 years as a head coach, Jim Crews enjoyed much success in the postseason, forging a record in conference tournaments (Mid-Continent Conference, Missouri Valley Conference and Patriot League). He guided Evansville, where he spent 17 seasons at the helm, to tournament titles in 1992 and 1993.

The last season in which Army had that many players reach 20 points was , when five Black Knights accomplished that feat (Dax Pearson, Andy Smith, Chris Spatola, J.P. Spatola and Charles Woodruff). Sophomore scorers: Jarell Brown is on track to become the fifth sophomore in the last 13 seasons to lead Army in scoring, following Mark Lueking (23.1 ppg., ), George Tatum (17.5 ppg., ), Chris Spatola (12.1 ppg., ) and Matt Bell (14.3 ppg., ). Three of the previous four (excluding Bell) also went on to top the Black Knights scoring chart during their junior and senior seasons as well. Approaching Top 10 status: Army is closing in on Top 10 season lists in the following team categories: three-point field goals (141; 10th place is 145 set by the squad), three-point field goal attempts (417; 425 in ) and blocked shots (42; 48 in ). Can 8 be great?: Army is looking to become the first No. 8 seed in PL tourney history to win a game. Eight seeds are 0-8 historically in the event. In 16 previous PL tourneys, no team seeded lower than third has reached the championship game. Road wins: A victory over Bucknell tonight would mark Army s fourth road victory of the campaign, giving the Black Knights their best one-season road showing since posting four away wins during the campaign. In each of those years, the Purple Aces earned automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament. In his career, Crews has led his teams to six postseason berths, including four NCAA showings (securing at-large bids in and ) and two trips to the National Invitation Tournament. His Aces were 1-4 in the NCAAs and 1-2 in the NIT. Crews is looking to snap a personal seven-game losing streak in conference tournaments tonight, dating to the semifinals of the 1999 MVC event (Evansville beat Bradley 64-63). BREWER EARNS ROOKIE HONOR At the end of his first week as a collegiate starter, Army freshman Kenny Brewer acquired his first career individual accolade earlier this week when he was named the Patriot League s Rookie of the Week, earning the conference s final honor of the campaign. Brewer, who drew the first two starting assignments of his career last week with appearances opposite Lafayette and Bucknell, is the first Black Knight to earn PL Rookie of the Week honors since Colin Harris captured that award midway through the campaign. In his two outings to close out the regular season, Brewer averaged 5.0 ppg., 4.5 rpg., 1.5 apg. and 0.5 spg., while shooting 50.0 percent from the field. The Porta Gunda, Fla., native celebrated his first turn with the lead cast by registering eight points, two rebounds and one assist in a road loss to Lafayette on Feb. 22. In the regular-season finale against Patriot League champion Bucknell, the rookie forward scored two points, snared a career-high seven rebounds and dished out two more assists during a career-high 26-minute playing stint. THE ARMY ROSTER EXPANDING ROLE FOR BREWER In the final five contests of the regular season, freshman forward Kenny Brewer saw his playing time increase dramatically. He drew his first starting assignment against Lafayette on Feb. 22 and remained with the lead cast in the regular-season finale against Bucknell. In the final five outings, he averaged 20.0 mpg., 6.4 ppg., 3.4 rpg. and 1.2 apg. On the season, Brewer has appeared in 15 games, averaging 3.3 ppg. and 2.1 rpg. He posted a career-high 11 points versus American on Feb. 15. Meanwhile, 37 of Brewer s 50 points this year have come in his last seven appearances. CHANGING OF THE GUARD In Army s past three outings, the Black Knights freshman class has forged 56 points, grabbed 30 rebounds, notched six assists and posted six steals. In all, the rookies combined for 223 minutes of game action in successive contests against American, Lafayette and Bucknell to close out the regular season. On the year, Army s freshmen have amassed a total of 223 points, with an impressive 25.1 percent of those points coming in the last three games. Kenny Brewer, making his first career start, and John Moonshower each forged eight points against the Leopards while D.J. Jemibewon added four markers for his first points since Jan. 11. Brewer posted a career-high 11 points against American while guard Dan Borcherdt contributed nine points. Moonshower, Doug Williams and Brandon Brandewie each added a bucket versus the Eagles. For Brandewie, the two points were the first of his career. Williams chipped in with two No. VL Name Pos. Cl. Hgt. Wgt. JACKSON CLOSING STRONG Guard Marshall Jackson has registered season-high point totals in each of Army s last two games, pocketing seven points at Lafayette on Feb. 22 before notching 10 points last Saturday in the regular-season finale at Bucknell. His 10- point effort versus the Bison marked his third career double-digit outing and was his first in 56 appearances, dating to Feb. 20, 2004, when he posted 10 markers opposite Lehigh. Averaging 8.5 ppg. in the past two games and 5.0 ppg. over the last five outings, Jackson has raised his season scoring rate to 2.1 ppg. He has shot 61.5 percent from the floor in the past five games after hitting at just 22.0 percent over the campaign s opening 21 tilts. Jackson, who has started every game in the backcourt for Army this winter, is averaging 2.1 ppg., 2.1 rpg., 1.38 apg. and.96 spg. Against the Leopards, Jackson became the second Black Knight this season to accumulate five steals, joining Corban Bates who had a handful of thefts opposite VMI on Nov. 21. Jackson has 14 steals over his last six outings (2.33 spg.). ROOKIE RELISHES ROLE Rookie swingman John Moonshower has recently moved into Army s rotation and has begun to bolster his production. He scored eight points in just nine minutes of action against Lafayette on Feb. 22. He has averaged 4.6 ppg. over his last five appearances, including a careerhigh nine points in seven minutes opposite Lehigh on Feb. 11. In 12 game showings on the campaign, Moonshower is scoring at a 3.0 ppg. clip. BACK IN THE MIX Rookie forward D.J. Jemibewon drew 34 minutes of game action in Army s final two regular-season games against Lafayette and Bucknell. His 23-minute stint versus the Leopards was his most significant court time since playing 26 minutes during a starting assignment at Sacred Heart on Dec. 5. In fact, Jemibewon had played in just six of Army s opening 12 Patriot League games, for 14 combined minutes, before taking the court at the Kirby Center. Jemibewon tallied four points (on 2 of 6 shooting), grabbed two rebounds and blocked a pair of shots opposite Lafayette. He is averaging 1.1 ppg. and 1.6 rpg. in 18 game showings this winter. PLAYING IT CLOSE Ten of Army s 26 games this season have been decided by nine points or less, including seven games decided by five or fewer points. The Black Knights are 2-5 in the games decided by five points or less, but are presently on a fourgame losing streak in those contests. During 27 ARMY VS. BUCKNELL (PL TOURNEY) PAGE 4 outings last season, Army played just seven games that were decided by 10 points or less, including only three verdicts of five points or less. BROWN ARMY S GO TO GUY Jarell Brown has blossomed into one of the Patriot League s leading scorers in just his second collegiate season. Brown has five 20-point efforts this winter and leads the Black Knights in scoring at 14.5 ppg. He posted 25 points against league-leading Bucknell on Feb. 1, one week after exploding for a career-high 29 points versus Lafayette on Jan. 25. He reached double figures in 10 of Army s 14 regular-season PL games and averaged 14.9 ppg. in league action. Brown enjoyed a 22-point showing at American on Jan. 18, hit for 21 at VMI on Nov. 21 and tallied 26 markers at Connecticut on Nov. 29. PENCHANT FOR PRODUCING SCORERS Jarell Brown ranks fourth in the Patriot League in scoring at 14.5 ppg. Should Brown finish among the loop s top five scorers, it would mark the fifth time in the past six years that an Army player has ended a campaign among the PL s top five scorers. Chris Spatola led the league in scoring in both (18.5 ppg.) and (16.5 ppg.) while his classmate Charles Woodruff finished second in (16.2 ppg.). Last year, as a sophomore, Matt Bell was third in the league in scoring at 14.3 ppg. At 13.0 ppg. this year, Bell stands sixth among PL scorers. BROWN AMONG PL S LEADERS In addition to ranking fourth in the Patriot League in scoring (14.5 ppg.), sophomore guard Jarell Brown lists third in three-point field goals per game (2.24), fifth in three-point shooting (.402) and 10th in field goal percentage (.431). BELL ALSO LISTED AMONG LEADERS Matt Bell s 13.0 ppg. scoring average places him sixth among Patriot League performers. He also lists among the loop s leaders in free throw shooting (11th,.766), assists (12th, 2.77 apg.) and steals (13th, 1.12 spg.). BRANDEWIE FINDS THE NET Freshman big man Brandon Brandewie scored his first collegiate bucket against American on Feb. 15, following up a Black Knight miss. Brandewie has appeared in five games thus far, including the final three regular-season contests. He is averaging 0.6 ppg. and 1.2 rpg. He has grabbed two boards in each of his last three appearances. ONE SURE THING FOR ARMY The one constant in Army s starting lineup since the opening of the campaign has been guard Matt Bell, who has started all 80 games since his arrival at West Point. That streak

BELL IN MIDDLE OF ACTION Matt Bell leads Army in assists (2.77 apg.) and steals (1.12 spg.), and is second on the squad in scoring (13.0 ppg.). Bell has led Army in scoring 13 times this season, while topping the squad in assists 12 times. BELL JOINS 900 CLUB Last Saturday in Sojka Pavilion, junior Matt Bell became the 28th player in Army basketball history to reach 900 career points. His 16-point night moved his career total to 901 points, and moved him past Seth Barrett (895) into 28th spot on the all-time scoring ladder. Bell enters the PL tourney needing 30 points to slip past Charles Woodruff into 27th place. Bell opened his junior campaign listed 58th on Army s career scoring ladder but has moved up 30 spots in 26 games thus far in Career Scoring Leaders 26. Jim Oxley Charles Woodruff Matt Bell MOVING UP ON OTHER CHARTS In addition to elevating his name higher on Army s career scoring chart, Matt Bell has moved into the program s all-time Top 10 list for threepoint field goals as well. He assumed sole possession of 10th place on that list versus Holy Cross on Jan. 11, surpassing Derrick Canada. Bell enters action tonight with 87 career treys. Joe Clark and Chad Michaelsen are tied for eighth place with 93 career three-pointers. Bell also stands eighth on the career three-point field goal attempts chart, having hoisted 247 threes. BORCHERDT BOMBS EAGLES In his five appearances prior to facing American on Feb. 15, freshman guard Dan Borcherdt had hit just 3 of 13 shots from the floor (.231). Borcherdt seemed to find his rhythm versus the Eagles, connecting on 3 of 6 shots from the field, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. His ninepoint night heralded his highest scoring output since his career-high 12-point outburst against VMI on Dec. 8. On the year, Borcherdt lists sixth on the team in scoring at 4.2 ppg. and his 24 treys this season are the third-highest total on the team. OVERTIME NOT KIND TO ARMY Army s overtime loss to Navy at Christl Arena on Feb. 5 signaled the Black Knights third OT loss of the season. Army, which had ARMY VS. BUCKNELL (PL TOURNEY) PAGE 5 not had three OT games in one campaign since , has seen its opponent make a late threepoint bucket to force the extra period in each of its overtime losses. Including the first of two OT sessions at American on Jan. 18, all four of the Black Knights extra sessions this winter have been created by a foe s late trey. DOUBLE OVERTIME NOTE The Black Knights double-overtime loss at American on Jan. 18 marked the program s first double-overtime contest since Army fell to Albany on Feb. 3, 2001 (a span of 133 games). Ironically, seven of Army s last 10 overtime games, dating to the opening of the campaign, have come on the road. BIG-TIME BOARD EFFORT Corban Bates had a monster game on the glass versus arch rival Navy on Feb. 5, grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds to go with 11 points. It marked Bates second double-double in a span of seven contests. His 14 caroms were the most by a Black Knight since Jonte Harrell and Adam Glosier yanked 14 boards apiece versus Albany on Feb. 19, 2000 (a span of 161 games). It was also the most rebounds by an Army player versus Navy since Mike Silliman garnered a record 17 boards opposite the Mids in Bates lists sixth in the Patriot League in rebounding at 5.2 rpg. He is fourth on the team in scoring (5.8 ppg.). PAIR OF DOUBLE-DOUBLES Corban Bates 11-point, 14-rebound effort against Navy on Feb. 5 marked his second double-double in a span of seven games. His first came against Lehigh on Jan. 14, and made him the first Army player in Jim Crews four-year tenure to accomplish that feat. Bates is also the first player to register more than one double-double in a season since Dax Pearson notched a trio of double-doubles during the campaign. Bates effort versus Lehigh featured 11 points and 10 rebounds. MORE BOARD NOTES Army tied its season high with 42 rebounds against Navy on Feb. 5, equaling its previous highwater mark of 42 set against Polytechnic on Nov. 18. In addition to Corban Bates career-high 14 caroms, guards Matt Bell (7) and Jarell Brown (5) tied their respective career highs on the glass opposite the Mids. BATES BATTLES ON THE BOARDS Despite his 6-4 frame, Corban Bates has led Army in rebounding all season. His season carom rate rests at 5.2 rpg., which ranks sixth among Patriot League performers this winter. Bates pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds versus Navy on Feb. 5 after snaring 10 boards at Lehigh. He has also notched nine caroms in a game on three occasions (Temple, The Citadel and

6 Colgate). He has grabbed five or more caroms in 14 of Army s 25 games this season. Offensively, the sophomore has reached double figures in points eight times. AVALANCHE OF RECOGNITION Sophomore forward Corban Bates received a trio of accolades on Jan. 23 following his solid two-game performance the previous week. Bates secured his first-ever Patriot League Player of the Week honor, was named Army Athletic Association Co-Athlete of the Week for the initial time in his career and became the first Army basketball player ever named to the honor roll for the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week award. In games against American and Navy, Bates averaged 15.5 ppg., 7.5 rpg. and 3.50 apg. He forged a career-high 20 points along with a game-high eight caroms as Army defeated Navy in Annapolis. During Army s double-overtime loss at American, the sophomore amassed 11 points, seven rebounds and a career-high four assists. BLOCKS PILING UP Jimmy Sewell boasts 59 career blocked shots and stands second on Army s all-time rejections list. He needs six blocks to assume the Black Knights career standard, which is presently held by Charles Woodruff (64). Sewell, who owns 17 blocks this season (the seventh-best singleseason total at Army), established a new singleseason record with his 29 blocks in , becoming the first Army player (since block stats were first kept at Army in ) to average more than one block per contest. Sewell eclipsed the previous mark of 22 held jointly by Chris Glowe ( ) and Woodruff ( ). JACKSON HOLDS SPOT IN LEAD CAST Junior guard Marshall Jackson is one of just two Army players to have started all 26 games this season, joining backcourt mate Matt Bell as regular members of the lead cast. Jackson has now started 48 games in his career, while his streak of 26 consecutive starts is second among active players only to Bell s impressive run of 80 straight outings with the lead cast. ENGSTROM INJECTS ENGERGY Senior Erik Engstrom has started 13 of Army s 14 Patriot League games. As a starter, Engstrom averages 1.1 ppg. and 2.8 rpg. By virtue of his starting assignment versus Colgate on Jan. 7, Engstrom became the first senior to start for Army since Bill Mohr, Sean O Keefe and Josh Wilson capped their careers by starting against American in the 2004 PL quarterfinals (a span of 40 games). 7 out the first half of league play, so much so that the junior appeared in just two of Army s final seven league matchups. Harris opposite Bucknell on Feb. 1 halted a streak of 47 straight game showings for the West Des Moines, Iowa, product. In his last eight appearances, Harris has scored just 1.9 ppg. That came after a sparkling eight-game span in which he averaged 11.3 ppg. and reached double figures six times. In his last eight outings, Harris has made only 3 of 16 shots (.188). HOLIDAY CONTRIBUTIONS Sophomore Grant Carter posted 11 points (5.5 ppg.) in back-to-back games against Brown and Dartmouth after scoring just nine markers during his initial six showings of He saw a season-high 17 minutes of action against Dartmouth on Jan. 4, scoring five points and grabbing a season-high three caroms. Versus Brown on Dec. 31, Carter hit two key long-range threepoint buckets to help Army erase a late sevenpoint lead and force a tie in the final minutes. Carter missed much of the preseason and the campaign s first two outings while recovering from surgery. Averaging 1.4 ppg. in his 18 appearances this season, Carter is shooting.421 from the field, with all but two of his shots coming from long range. GUARDING THE GLASS Junior point guard Marshall Jackson yanked down a career-high 10 rebounds versus New York Maritime. He became the first Black Knight this season to reach double figures in rebounds and was the first Army player to accomplish that feat since Corban Bates snared 11 caroms opposite Holy Cross in last season s Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal outing. Jackson became the first Army guard to hit double digits in rebounds since George Tatum corraled 10 boards against Colgate on Feb. 27, 1999, in the Patriot League quarterfinals (a span of 174 games). CREATING SECOND CHANCES Army has registered at least 10 offensive rebounds in 10 of the season s first 26 games, averaging 8.3 offensive caroms per contest (including team boards). Those figures are a significant improvement over the campaign in which Army hit double digits in offensive caroms just once (13 versus Polytechnic). Versus The Citadel on Nov. 26, the Black Knights corralled 16 offensive boards, their highest total since snaring 16 versus Stony Brook on Dec. 11, 2003 (a span of 50 games). BUCKEYE STATE SHARPSHOOTER Dan Borcherdt became the first player in the history of the state of Ohio to lead the state in both free throw shooting and three-point shooting in the same year, accomplishing that feat as a junior in Borcherdt, who toiled for Archbold High, graduated as the state s all-time leading free throw shooter and also set his school s career scoring record with 1,422 points. VALIANT EFFORT VERSUS HUSKIES Army posted an impressive effort against No. 3 Connecticut on Nov. 29 in the sold-out Hartford Civic Center. After celebrating its home opener and being honored for its 2005 EA Sports Maui Invitational championship, Connecticut found itself in a dogfight with the Black Knights before prevailing Army led before UConn ended the first half on a 19-5 run over the final 6:30 to secure a lead. The Huskies would ultimately build a pair of 18-point second-half leads before Army rallied to within 10 in the final six minutes. DEFENSIVE STANDS Army held New York Maritime to 36 points on Dec. 17 after limiting Polytechnic to 37 points in the home opener. The last time the Black Knights held two teams to less than 40 points in the same season was when Bob Knight s Army squad held three teams below 40 en route to leading the nation in scoring defense. In the 35 seasons since that campaign, the Black Knights had forged only five contests in which they had held an opponent below 40 points (prior to opening this season). Three of the last seven instances have come under current head coach Jim Crews. FOLLOWING SINNING TO THE POINT Freshman John Moonshower joined the Army men s basketball program this fall, following in the footsteps of fellow Ohioan Cory Sinning, currently an Army junior. Both Sinning and Moonshower toiled on the hardwood for Van Wert High School in Van Wert, Ohio. Sinning was a senior at Van Wert when Moonshower was a freshman. Sinning spent a year at the U.S. Military Academy Prep School before arriving at West Point. CHARITY BENEFITS FOES During the regular season, Army s opponents outscored the Black Knights by an average of 6.5 ppg. at the foul line. Durinig nine of Army s 21 losses this winter, the Black Knights tied or outscored their opponent from the field, only to be outdone at the foul line. ARMY VS. BUCKNELL (PL TOURNEY) PAGE 7 BRIGHT SPOT IN ITHACA During Army s loss at Cornell on Dec. 20, freshman forward Doug Williams provided one of the Black Knights few bright spots with his nine-point, four-rebound performance. While both numbers were team highs, Williams point total signaled a career best and his rebound aggregate equaled his career high. The rookie entered the game having notched just four points (all against Polytechnic) and 13 rebounds. Williams, who has seen a significant increase in playing time late in the season, averages 1.0 ppg. and 1.5 rpg. over his 21 game appearances. TINKERING WITH THE LINEUP Head coach Jim Crews implemented a dozen different starting lineups during the regular season. SQUAD BREAKDOWN Army s 19-man roster consists of one senior, five juniors, five sophomores and eight freshmen. This year s team is the second consecutive Army squad to boast only one senior performer (Ray Fredrick was the Black Knights only senior a year ago). UP NEXT A win over Bucknell would vault the eighthseeded Black Knights into Sunday s 1 p.m. semifinal contest against the winner of the American- Lafayette game, set for 5:30 p.m. tonight here in Sojka Pavilion. A loss to the Bison would conclude the Black Knights 116th intercollegiate hardwood season.

9 ARMY HEAD COACH JIM CREWS CREWS MILESTONE VICTORIES As he conducts his fourth season along the banks of the Hudson, and the 21st season of his head coaching career, Jim Crews continues with the rebuilding project that became his mission when he was hired as Army s 29th head men s basketball coach in March Having reached the coveted 300-win plateau in , Crews further established himself as one of college basketball s finest mentors, building upon a sparkling resumé that also includes six postseason appearances and five regular season conference championships. He entered the campaign with 308 career victories, listing 43rd among active mentors in all-time victories. After presiding over one of the youngest teams in the nation in , Crews welcomed 12 letterwinners back to the fold for this winter s campaign. The Black Knights will continue to rely on younger players as their roster boasts just one senior this season. Crews is certainly adept at helping build outstanding programs, having played at and coached for perennial Big Ten and national power Indiana University prior to a successful 17-year run as head coach at the University of Evansville that preceded his arrival at the Academy.During his tenure in Evansville, Crews led the Purple Aces to six postseason appearances, including four trips to the NCAA Tournament. All six of those teams registered at least 21 victories. Evansville recorded 15 consecutive seasons of at least.500 finishes in conference play. under Crews. Only eight other schools among the nation s 321 Division I members could make that claim during the same span. Named the 1999 Rawlings Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Crews guided the Purple Aces to a record, a regular season league championship and their fourth NCAA tourney appearance in 14 years. It marked the fourth time that the native of Normal, Ill., garnered league coach of the year plaudits after having been similarly cited by the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1987, 1989 and Crews is the only coach in the tradition-rich history of Evansville to register nine consecutive non-losing seasons. Before Crews, no coach at UE had ever produced more than seven straight seasons with a record of at least.500. That includes legendary Arad McCutchan, the first college division coach ever inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. While he has built an impressive resume on the basketball court, Crews is viewed just as highly off it. Fifty-two of the 53 players who spent four years with the Purple Aces program during Crews tenure earned undergraduate degrees. Every senior in his final dozen years departed Evansville with a degree. A member of Indiana University s 1976 National Championship team, Crews lettered four years for the Hoosiers from 1972 to 1976 under legendary head coach Bob Knight. During his time in the Crimson and Cream, Indiana forged a remarkable (.900) overall record, including a stellar 59-5 (.922) mark in Big 10 Conference games. Indiana claimed conference titles in each of those seasons. As a senior, Crews helped the Hoosiers to a 32-0 record en route to becoming the NCAA s most recent undefeated National Champions. Indiana posted a (.696) overall record and a (.653) Big 10 Conference slate during Crews stint as an assistant in Bloomington. Crews departed Indiana in 1985 to join the Evansville program.
