PURPOSE This prgram cvers the requirements assciated with the selectin, maintenance, training and use f Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) used t prtect individuals frm actual r ptential safety and health risks including: Eye and face prtectin. Prtective ftwear. Head prtectin. Hand prtectin. Prtective clthing. Hearing prtectin. Fall prtectin equipment. Respiratry prtectin. 2. WORK PLACE ASSESSMENT Each wrkplace must be assessed t determine what hazards are present, r are likely t be present, which will require the use f Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE). The assessment shuld include a walk-thrugh survey, which entails bserving all the wrk prcesses in the wrkplace and analysis f prir incidents and injuries. 3. HIERARCHY OF CONTROLS Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) is nly a supplement t engineering and administrative hazard cntrls. PPE is the last line f prtectin and is nt t be used as the nly frm f prtectin. 4. SELECTION AND PURCHASE OF PPE Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) must be selected based n its apprpriateness fr the identified hazards. All Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) must cnfrm t legislative requirements and the relevant Canadian Standards. KMC Mining has a list f preferred brands/mdels fr Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE). This chice f PPE cnfrms t standards and has been determined t be suitable fr ur wrk sites. These are the prducts that must be purchased, unless a suitable alternative is apprved. 5. TRAINING Each emplyee wh is required t wear Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) must receive training n the safe use, limitatins and maintenance f the equipment. Training prgrams have been develped within the rganizatin fr specific Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE). PPE, which requires additinal, cmprehensive training, includes, but is nt limited t: Fall Prtectin Equipment, Hearing Prtectin and Respiratry Prtectin. Training fr Basic Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) can be fund thrugh Safe Wrk Practices in the Safety Management System. 2 6. HEAD PROTECTION Safety headwear is designed t prtect the head frm impact frm falling bjects, bumps, splashes frm chemicals r harmful substances, and cntact with energized bjects and equipment. Hard Hats shall meet CSAZ94.1/ANSI Z89.1 standard. Hard hats are required n mst wrksites. Exceptins may include ffice building and pickup trucks depending n site-specific requirements. Head prtectin is made up f tw parts: The shell and the suspensin. Bth parts must be cmpatible and maintained. If attachments are used, they must be designed specifically fr use with the specific headwear. A hd f a sweater, tques, ball caps r hat must nt be wrn under the hard hat. Only apprved headwear such as balaclava r hard hat liners are permitted t be wrn. Prper care is required fr headgear t perfrm efficiently. The service life is affected by many factrs including temperature, chemicals, sunlight and ultravilet radiatin. The usual maintenance fr headgear is simply washing with a mild detergent and rinsing thrughly. Avid using slvents r harsh abrasives t clean hard hats. Replace headgear that is pitted, hled, cracked r brittle. 7. EYE and FACE PROTECTION Eye and face prtectin equipment must meet CSA Z94 and/r ANSI Z87 standards. Emplyees will wear KMC apprved eye prtectin in the required wrk areas. Exceptins wuld be in ffices, enclsed equipment and vehicle cabs. Full-face shields are required fr the fllwing duties; Using a pressure washer fr any steaming duties. When perfrming any grinding, chipping, guging cutting r buffing, the fllwing PPE is required: Mn-gggles with a face shield Safety glasses with a full welding mask When spraying any degreasing chemicals, mn gggles must be wrn in additin t face shield. When fueling heavy equipment. Only apprved prescriptin safety glasses will be allwed. At a minimum, prescriptin glasses must meet the required standards. Over The Glasses (OTG s) r mn gggles will be prvided fr thse glasses that d nt cnfrm t these standards. The use f cntact lenses must be apprved fr the task and lcatin. Mn gggles may be required. Clean safety glasses/shields daily mre ften if needed. 3 Replace pitted, scratched, bent and prly fitted Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE). Damaged eye prtectin will interfere with visin and will nt prvide prtectin it was designed t deliver. D nt mdify eye/face prtectin. 8. CLOTHING and COVERALLS Prper clthing is required t ensure arms, legs and trunk f the bdy is prtected frm injury. The minimum standard requires that lng pants cver the entire leg and that lng sleeves are wrn in any active wrk area. Shrts, tank tps, 3/4 shirts and shirtless attire are examples f nn-acceptable wrk clthing. Shrt sleeve shirt need t be at least 6 frm the shulder and can be wrn while perating clsed cab equipment. Clthing must be in gd cnditin. Excessively dirty, baggy r trn clthing is unacceptable. Reflective clthing must be wrn in all wrk areas. Jewelry, necklaces, rings, ear rings, facial jewelry, bracelets, wrist watches r ther similar items shall nt be wrn. Earring replacements will be plastic, flush munt, cncave plugs nly. All persns entering a KMC Mining wrk site must be prperly clthed. The minimum standard requires that lng pants cver the entire leg and that lng sleeves are wrn in any active wrking area. Shrt sleeve shirt need t be at least 6 frm the shulder and can be wrn while perating clsed cab equipment. All Maintenance persnnel must wear cveralls. Welders and any ther persns invlved in ht wrk are required t wear fire retardant cveralls. 9. HAND PROTECTION Chse hand Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) that will prtect against the hazards n the jb. The selectin f apprpriate hand prtectin will depend upn the hazard invlved and the MSDS sheet. Suitable glves must be wrn when handling materials that are sharp r jagged. Rubber, neprene r synthetic glves shall be wrn when using chemicals, and where there may be skin cntact. Leather glves are fr activities such as welding r wrk invlving rugh surfaces. Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) fr the hands cme in many frms, each designed t prtect against certain hazards, and it is the respnsibility f supervisrs t ensure that adequate hand prtectin is prvided in the wrkplace. 4 10. FOOT PROTECTION Safety ftwear is designed t prtect against ft hazards in the wrkplace. The prper ftwear will prtect against cmpressin, puncture injuries and impact. Prtective ftwear wrn by emplyees must be Grade 1, CSA apprved, bear the fllwing symbls: (Green Triangle) Use where there is a danger f punctures. The minimum standard fr wrk bt height is at least 6 high, must be abve the ankle. Bts must be able t be fully laced up t prvide ankle supprt. The safety ft wear must have sles made f Vibram, Thermplastic Plyurethane (TPU), rubber r arprene. Electricians may have special requirements with safety ftwear. Check with yur supervisr. Lace bt fully and tie laces securely. Inspect yur bts daily. Remve metal pieces that may be stuck t the sles. Replace damaged and/r defective ftwear. Expsed steel tes and wrn tread pattern n bts is an indicatin that the ftwear needs t be replaced. In areas where safety bts are NOT required, we require persnnel t wear shes which cver the tes and heel f the ft. Open ted sandals, flip flps and shes with excessive heel size are nt apprpriate fr KMC Mining Facilities. 11. HEARING PROTECTION Hearing Prtectin Devices are required in designated areas, where a site-specific assessment has determined the need fr hearing prtectin and while perfrming certain tasks. Examples: Cab f Equipment, during walk arund inspectins, maintenance peratins in the field and shp. All emplyees expsed t an 8 hur TWA f 85 dba will be prvided with a chice f tw different earplugs and tw different earmuffs. All emplyees expsed t an 8 hur TWA f 90 dba will be required t wear either an earplug r an earmuff type-hearing prtectr. Emplyees expsed t an 8 hur TWA f 105 dba will be required t wear bth an earplug and an earmuff type-hearing prtectr. 12. HAIR and BEARD POLICY Hair must be secured while n the wrk site t prevent it frm catching n a rtating machine r becming a fire risk. Wrkers must use a hair net r ther securing device t ensure hair des nt fall belw cllar length. All persnnel required r may be required t wear respiratry prtectin must be clean shaven. Facial hair that may interfere with the prper and effective sealing f respiratry equipment is nt permitted. 5 13. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION Befre a respiratr can be selected, a hazard assessment must be cmpleted. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) shuld be reviewed as part f the hazard assessment. Any emplyee required t wear a respiratr must ntify the emplyer f any medical cnditins that may arise during the use f a respiratr. Facial hair, which will interfere with the psitive seal f a respiratr, is nt permitted with the use f a respiratr. Respiratr users must be fit tested with the make, mdel, style and size f the respiratr they will be using. Emplyees must receive training in the prper fit, use, limitatins, inspectin, maintenance and recgnitin f adverse medical symptms befre being allwed t use a respiratr. 14. FALL PROTECTION A Fall Prtectin System must be implemented when there is a risk f falling: A vertical distance f 1.8 meters (6 ); r Where there is pssibility f injury at less than 1.8 meters. E.g. falling int hazardus substances, materials r nt any perating machinery. "Fall prtectin system" means any f the fllwing when used t prtect a wrker frm a fall r minimize the risk frm falling: Guardrails. Full bdy harness with a lanyard and/r lifeline and an anchr, and their related equipment; Fall Arrest r Travel Restraint System. A safety net. A cntrl zne ( Cntrl zne" means the area between an unguarded edge f a building r structure and a line which is set back a safe distance f 2 meters (6.6 ) with a safety mnitr.). Apprpriate guardrails must be installed, in a permanent wrk area, where there is a risk f persnnel falling 1.2 meters (3.9 ) and less than 3 meters (9.8 ). If guardrails are nt reasnably practicable, a Travel Restraint System must be used. Persnnel wrking in any certified aerial device r elevating wrk platfrm are required t use Fall Prtectin. When using Fall Arrest System, a wrker must use an anchr pint which is secure, immvable and abve shulder height. Emplyee shall inspect their safety harness, lanyard and Dee-rings r wear, damage and ther deteriratin befre each use. Defective cmpnents shall be remved frm service. Safety belts are prhibited fr use fr any Fall Prtectin System.
