Prtect frm sunlight. Gases may displace xygen and present an asphyxiatin hazard. Many gases present ther hazards; make sure that all the ptential hazards are understd befre handling any chemical. 3 Sectin 5 Persnal Prtective Equipment (PPE) Respiratr Prtectin: If cmpressed gases are being used utside f a chemical fume hd, respiratry prtectin may be required. If this activity is necessary, cntact EH&S s a respiratry prtectin analysis can be perfrmed. Respiratrs shuld be used under any f the fllwing circumstances: As a last line f defense (i.e., after engineering and administrative cntrls have been exhausted). When Permissible Expsure Limit (PEL) has exceeded r when there is a pssibility that PEL will be exceeded. Regulatins require the use f a respiratr r an emplyer requires the use f a respiratr. There is ptential fr harmful expsure due t an atmspheric cntaminant (in the absence f PEL) As PPE in the event f a chemical spill clean up prcess Lab persnnel intending t use/wear a respiratr mask must be trained and fit tested. This is a regulatry requirement. Cntact EH&S regarding respiratr clearance. Hand Prtectin: Glves must be wrn. Use prper glve remval technique t avid any skin cntact. Nitrile glves are recmmended fr lw vlume applicatins. Wearing tw pairs f nitrile glves is recmmended. NOTE: Cnsult with yur preferred glve manufacturer t ensure that the glves yu plan n using are cmpatible with the specific flammable r cmbustible liquids being used. Eye Prtectin: ANSI apprved prperly fitting safety glasses r chemical splash gggles are required. Skin and Bdy Prtectin: Labratry cats may be wrn and be apprpriately sized fr the individual and buttned t their full length (flame resistant lab cats must be wrn if handling flammable gases such as hydrgen). Labratry cat sleeves must be f sufficient length t prevent skin expsure while wearing glves. Persnnel must als wear full length pants, r equivalent, and clse ted shes. Full length pants and clse ted shes must be wrn at all times by all individuals that are ccupying the labratry area. The area f skin between the she and ankle must nt be expsed. 4 Sectin 6 Engineering Cntrls Use f cmpressed gases shuld be cnducted in a prperly functining chemical fume hd whenever pssible. The chemical fume hd must be apprved and certified by EH&S and have a face velcity between feet per minute. Cntact EH&S fr infrmatin regarding specific handling requirements when wrk with txic, highly txic, crrsive, and reactive gases. Generally, these f gases need t be stred and used with lcal exhaust ventilatin (e.g., fume hd r gas cylinder cabinet). Sectin 7 First Aid Prcedures If inhaled: Mve int the fresh air immediately. Cnsult a physician. If nt breathing give artificial respiratin and seek immediate medical attentin. In case f skin cntact: Immediately flush skin with plenty f water fr at least 15 minutes while remving cntaminated clthing and shes. Wash any cntaminated clthing befre reuse. Thrughly clean shes befre reuse. Cnsult a physician. In case f eye cntact: Check fr and remve any cntact lenses. Rinse thrughly with plenty f water fr at least 15 minutes and cnsult a physician. Seek immediate medical attentin. If swallwed: D NOT induce vmiting unless directed by medical persnnel. Never give anything by muth t an uncnscius persn. Seek immediate medical attentin. Sectin 8 Special Handling and Strage Requirements Cmpressed gas cylinders shuld be stred in a secure, well ventilated lcatin, and in an upright psitin at all times. All cmpressed gas cylinders shuld be handled as if full and shuld never be cmpletely emptied. Cylinders that are nt in use (meaning that the regulatr is nt attached) must be secured and the safety cap must be n the cylinder and are permitted t be chained tgether. Cylinders that are in use, meaning there is a regulatr attached, must be individually secured by a chain r strap. Cylinder valves and regulatrs must be prtected frm impact r damage. A designated strage area must be established fr cmpressed gases and inventried peridically. Txic, highly txic, crrsive, and reactive gases shuld be stred in a gas cylinder cabinet. Avid cntact with skin, eyes, and inhalatin. Keep away frm surces f ignitin if the gas is flammable. Fllw labratry supervisr s instructins fr PPE, which may differ depending n the type and/r quantity f cmpressed gas being used. Use in the smallest practical quantities fr the experiment being perfrmed. Cmpressed Gases 4 Date: 10/29/2014

5 Wrk must be cnducted in a chemical fume hd if air cncentratins abve 10% f the LEL culd be created, if the chemical is irritating t the eyes r respiratry system, and/r is txic by inhalatin. Gas cylinder cnnectins and fittings must be inspected frequently fr deteriratin and must never be used withut a regulatr. Never use a leaking, crrded, r damaged cylinder and never refill cmpressed gas cylinders. When stpping a leak between cylinder and regulatr, always clse the valve befre tightening the unin nut. The regulatr shuld be replaced with a safety cap when the cylinder is nt in use. The safety cap must be in place when a gas cylinder is mved. Fr large gas cylinders (>27 inches), an apprved gas cylinder cart shuld be used. The cylinder must be strapped t the cart and the prtective cap must be in place befre mving the cylidner. A cylinder shuld never be mved r transprted withut the prtective cap. If a gas type r gas specie is nted t be utside f nrmal inventries r strange, a search fr SDS and inventry list shall be made. A few cmpressed gas cylinders have a shelf life and can becme mre hazardus as time ges n. It is extremely imprtant that these chemicals are identified and managed prperly. If any time sensitive gases are fund t be past the manufacturer s expiratin date, they must be submitted t EH&S fr hazardus waste dispsal immediately. The fllwing is a list f time sensitive cmpressed gases: Hydrgen fluride, anhydrus Hydrgen brmide, anhydrus Hydrgen sulfide, anhydrus Hydrgen cyanide, anhydrus Hydrgen chlride, anhydrus Sectin 9 Spill and Accident Prcedures Chemical Spill Dial Immediately evacuate area and ensure thers are aware f the spill. If there is an imminent threat f a fire, pull the nearest fire alarm statin t evacuate the building and dial Chemical Spill n Bdy r Clthes: Remve clthing and rinse bdy thrughly in emergency shwer fr at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attentin; dial Chemical Splash int Eyes: Immediately rinse eyes and inner surface f eyelid with water frm the emergency eyewash statin fr 15 minutes by frcibly hlding the eye pen. Seek medical attentin; dial Sectin 10 Medical Emergency Life Threatening Emergency, After Hurs, Weekends And Hlidays: Dial Nn Life Threatening Emergency: Immediately reprt injury t supervisr and cmplete the First Reprt f Injury. 6 Sectin 11 Waste Dispsal Prcedures Label Waste: Make sure the waste cntainer(s) is prperly labeled; label shuld indicate all f the cntents f the cntainer. EH&S prvides hazardus waste labels free f charge, cntact dennis.daye@marquette.edu t btain labels. Stre Waste: Stre hazardus waste in clsed cntainers, and in a designated area (flammable cabinet is recmmended). Dispse f Waste: Befre submitting cmpressed gas waste t EH&S, ensure that the cylinder cannt be returned t the manufacturer r distributr. Many gas vendrs charge demurrage fr gas strage. Sectin 12 Safety Data Sheet (SDS) A current cpy f the SDS fr the specific cmpressed gas being used must be made available t all persnnel wrking in the labratry at all times. T btain a cpy f the SDS, refer t Marquette s MSDS library r cntact the chemical manufacturer. Many manufacturers SDSs can be fund nline n websites such as Sigma Aldrich ( states.html) r Siri MSDS Index ( Sectin 13 Prtcl/Prcedure Nt applicable at this time. 7 Sectin 14 Dcumentatin f Training (signature f all users is required) Prir t cnducting any wrk with cmpressed gases, designated persnnel must prvide training t his/her labratry persnnel specific t the hazards invlved in wrking with this substance, wrk area decntaminatin, and emergency prcedures. The Principal Investigatr must prvide his/her labratry persnnel with a cpy f this SOP and a cpy f the SDS prvided by the manufacturer. The Principal Investigatr must ensure that his/her labratry persnnel have attended apprpriate labratry safety training r refresher training within the last ne year.
