1 Schl f Natural Sciences and Mathematics Labratry Safety Regulatins Everyne is respnsible fr safety and accident preventin when present in the labratry, especially the persn(s) cnducting an experimental prcedure. Yur labratry instructr will review these Labratry Safety Regulatins with yu at the start f the term. It is everyne s respnsibility t read, understand and fllw all safety regulatins, plicies and prcedures when yu are present in any f the NAMS labratries. If yu are unsure abut anything, ask yur instructr fr additinal infrmatin. Many f the labratries are equipped with eyewash statins, emergency shwers, fume hds, and ther safety equipment. Yur labratry instructr will review hw t prperly perate this equipment. Everyne using the labratry is respnsible fr ensuring that they are familiar with the prper peratin and use f all safety equipment. Labratry Instructrs must als ensure their activities are cmpatible with any ther activities taking place in the labratry. Unsupervised access t the Academic Labratries and Field Facilities is nt permitted. Students are nt permitted t wrk in any NAMS facilities withut direct faculty supervisin. There may be situatins where the faculty supervisr can make arrangements with the NAMS Directr t allw student access t cmplete prjects. Thse with access will be infrmed f acceptable activities during scheduled hurs by their supervisr while abiding by the fllwing regulatins. During n time is a staff member t assume supervisin f a student wrking in a lab under the abve agreement. Everyne entering the labratry must cmplete all regulatry training requirements and abide by all University and NAMS plicies and prcedures. The labratry staff and faculty have the authrity t expel any student frm the labratry r halt any activity taking place in the labratry if a safety prcedure r regulatin is vilated r a ptential hazard exists. All visitrs must reprt t the NAMS Dean s Suite, USC 240 r the NAMS Labratry Office, F-001 t arrange fr authrized access with qualified persnnel. NAMS teaching and research labratries are lcated in many lcatins arund campus. A cmprehensive file f SDSs is maintained in the Labratry Office in F-001 and in the Unified Science Center in USC-111. The University central file fr all SDSs is lcated in H-221. A cpy f the NAMS Chemical Hygiene Plan and the University Expsure Cntrl Plan can be fund in each labratry prep area. This includes USC1-152, 252, 352, USC2-218, 231, 324, A&S 210 and F-001. An electrnic cpy can be fund in all teaching labratries. General Regulatins Infrm yur instructr f any special cnditins that might affect yur labratry perfrmance. Prper nutritin and a gd night s sleep are very imprtant. If during the labratry sessin yu feel sick r faint, immediately take a seat and ask the instructr fr assistance. If yu cannt d it persnally, send a fellw student fr assistance. Accidents r Incidents In case f an accident r incident, seek immediate assistance frm the labratry instructr, member f labratry staff, Campus Plice and/r Health Services. The telephne number fr Campus Plice is X911. The telephne number fr Health Services is X4701. Health Services is lcated in the West Quad Building n the Main Campus, rm 108. If a student is injured in any way, s/he must be checked by medical persnnel. If the student is sent t Health Services, she r he must always be accmpanied by the instructr, member f staff r their designee. All accidents r incidents invlving students, faculty r staff must be reprted t the Labratry Safety Officer and an Incident Reprt Frm must be cmpleted with all required infrmatin within 24 hurs f the ccurrence. Incident Reprt Frms are lcated in each teaching labratry and shuld be submitted t a staff member in USC1-240 r F-001 Faculty Respnsibility Instructrs must familiarize themselves with all labratry prcedures r experiments befre assigning them t students in the labratry. Hazards must be minimized r eliminated wherever pssible and the instructr will train students in the prper handling f chemicals, equipment peratin and experimental prcedures. Faculty and staff will determine prper dispsal prcedures fr all hazardus materials befre the start f the prcedure. [ii]

Student(s) must receive initial instructins fr peratin f instrumentatin and handling f chemicals frm the instructr. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Hazardus Substance Fact Sheets (HSFS) prvide infrmatin n chemical prperties and a descriptin f prper handling prcedures and shuld be reviewed befre wrking with any unfamiliar chemical. N smking, eating/drinking, chewing gum, applying make-up r strage f fd/drink is permitted in any f the labratry areas, instrument rms r research labratries. Ft Prtectin and Prtective Clthing The entire labratry cmplex is designated as a ft hazard area. Shes with slid tps must be wrn in the labratry area at all times, including when taking exams. Persns with bare feet r sandals f any kind will nt be permitted in the labratry. Clthing wrn in the labratry shuld ffer prtectin frm splashes and spills. Shrts, cut-ffs, miniskirts, halter and tank tps are nt recmmended. Eye Prtectin Areas and Persnal Prtective Equipment The entire labratry cmplex in the Unified Science Center 1&2, F-Wing, Nacte Creek Building 501, and the Arts & Science Building are cnsidered ptential eye prtectin areas where hazardus chemical peratins culd be perfrmed. When an instructr determines that hazardus peratins will be perfrmed, the area is cnsidered an eye prtectin area. All persns in an eye prtectin area must wear the fllwing: 1. Lab cat r lab aprn 2. Shes with slid tps 3. Chemical splash safety gggles which ttally seal the entire eye area All students are required t buy their wn chemical splash safety gggles which are available in the Stcktn University Bkstre. If needed, at the beginning f the semester, gggles may be brrwed by cntacting the prfessr. Any gggles that are brrwed and nt returned will incur a $20 nn-refundable charge. All students in the bilgy labratries in the Unified Science Center 1&2 are required t wear safety glasses. If needed, at the beginning f the semester, safety glasses may be brrwed by cntacting the prfessr. Any safety glasses that are brrwed and nt returned will incur a $20 nn-refundable charge. Cntact Lenses The wearing f cntact lenses in Eye Prtectin Areas is prhibited. Sft cntact lenses might absrb and retain chemical vaprs r hld freign materials against the crnea causing damage t the eye, even when chemical splash safety gggles are wrn. [iii]

Lng hair is defined as hair that is lng enugh t fall frward int the wrk area. Thse with lng beards must tie them up r tuck them in. The same rule applies t head dressing, scarves r similar attire. Behavir Mature and respnsible behavir is required in all labratry facilities at all times. Faculty and staff must reprt threatening r vilent behavir t campus plice by dialing 911. All persns must reprt unsafe cnditins r practices t the labratry instructr, Labratry Safety Officer r labratry staff. The labratry faculty and staff have the authrity t expel any student frm the labratry r t halt any activity taking place in the labratry if a safety prcedure r regulatin is vilated r a ptential hazard exists. Brken r damaged equipment Brken r damaged equipment, especially glassware, must never be used. Dispse f brken glass using the dust pan and brush/brm int specially marked glass dispsal bxes. These bxes are fr glass nly. Trash shuld ever be depsited in them as this is a fire hazard. Authrizatin t wrk Faculty members must make sure that all students are prperly supervised. Students are nt permitted t wrk in any NAMS facility withut direct supervisin unless arrangements have been made between the faculty supervisr and NAMS Directr. Faculty members are respnsible fr securing all state and federal permits fr student related labratry prcedures r experiments. The buddy system (tw r mre students wrking tgether) must be utilized when perfrming fieldwrk. Wrking alne in labratries during ff-hurs is nt advisable fr safety and security reasns. N hazardus experiments shuld be undertaken by a faculty r staff member wrking alne in the labratry. Faculty/ Staff wrking in separate labratries utside f nrmal wrking hurs shuld make arrangements t peridically check n each ther. Attendance f Operatins Operatins r experiments are nt t be left unattended unless autmatic safety cntrls are in place. Set-ups are nt t be left under the supervisin f anther party wh is nt familiar with the prper handling f the hazards invlved. If it is necessary t leave an experiment/ apparatus in peratin unattended, please btain apprval frm the respnsible faculty member and pst a yellw sheet next t the experiment/ apparatus, as well as n the dr/windw facing ut t be read in an emergency. The infrmatin prvided must include the reactin/experiment in prgress, the faculty member respnsible, cntact infrmatin and set-up/ break-dwn date. The yellw sheet will be available in each labratry. Labratry staff must be ntified if the experiment is t be in peratin vernight, therwise the apparatus will be remved if set up in a cmmn lab area. All chemicals assciated with the experiment need t be prperly labeled n cntainers and the yellw sheet (if in a reactin flask). [iv]

5 Schl f Natural Sciences and Mathematics Labratry Safety Regulatins Clean up All supplies must be cleaned and returned t their prper lcatins and all benchtps must be wiped dwn after finishing an experiment. Spnges, scrub pads and test tube brushes are lcated at every sink fr this purpse. Bench tps must nly be cleaned using spnges r white scrub pads nly. Balances must be brushed ff after each weighing using the brush prvided. Clean arund the balance, but d nt mve it t accmplish this. Areas arund instruments must be kept clean at all times. Ht plate crds must be unplugged frm utlet and wrapped neatly using the Velcr tie prvided. D nt lay crd ver ht plate when ht, r wrap arund the heating surface! Other equipment such as, electrphresis units, ph meters, centrifuges, melting pint apparatuses, etc. need specific maintenance and cleaning and the instructr is ultimately respnsible fr the cnditin f the equipment utilized in the labratry Laptps must be turned ff, plugged in t the charger cable and returned t the cart in the apprpriate numbered slt. Laptp carts must be lcked at all times when nt in use. Any shared glassware r equipment acrss sectins must be returned and nt placed in the student lckers. Authrized Visitatin Visitrs are permitted in NAMS Academic Labratries and Field Facilities nly when accmpanied by a NAMS faculty r staff member. Children Under special circumstances, children can be allwed int the science labratries fr a shrt perid f time nly if accmpanied by a NAMS faculty r staff member. See the Labratry Directr at least tw weeks in advance fr prper apprval. Under n circumstances can a child be left unsupervised in a labratry r hallway utside f a labratry. Skatebards/ rller-blades/ bicycles/ hver bards Skatebards, rllerblades, bicycles r hver bards are nt permitted in any NAMS labratry in accrdance with University Plicy. The peratin r riding f the abve in any NAMS labratry facilities r hallways is prhibited. View the University s Plicy and Student Handbk n the Academic Affairs web site fr mre infrmatin. [v]

6 Schl f Natural Sciences and Mathematics Labratry Safety Regulatins Specific Regulatins Use f Micrscpes D nt use a micrscpe if yu have an eye infectin. D nt use mascara when wrking with a micrscpe. Always carry the micrscpe with tw hands, ne under base and ne hlding the arm handle. When finished using the micrscpe, the crd must be wrapped neatly arund base r crd keeper. Make sure the stage is in lwest psitin and eye pieces face handle, if mveable. Please d nt remve rubber eye cups. Micrscpes must be returned t the apprpriate cabinet in the apprpriate numbered slt with handle (arm) facing ut. Micrscpe cabinets must be kept lcked at all times when nt in use. Oil is nly used n 100X pwer. Only ne drp is needed t achieve adequate results. After use, il must be cleaned frm the lens and slide with lens paper. In the event f excessive il, use Sparkle nn-ammnia cleaner and lens paper. Lens paper must be used t avid damaging the lens. Specimens/ chemicals Remval f any specimen (preserved r nt preserved) r any chemical frm the labratry is strictly prhibited. Open Flame Open flame such as the ne prduced by a Bunsen burner r alchl lamp must never be left unattended. Electric heating devices such as bacticineratrs, heating mantles, water baths and ht plates are safer heat surces than pen flame and shuld be used where apprpriate. All gas valves n benchtps must be turned ff after lab sessin. D nt use red emergency ff buttn unless it is an emergency. If yu smell gas in the labratry, reprt it immediately t yur instructr r lab staff. D nt attempt t use an pen flame until yu are tld it is safe t d s. Glves There are several types f glves stred in each labratry. Glve charts and Safety Data Sheets shuld be cnsulted t determine the effectiveness f a particular type f glve t prtect against heat, cld r chemical expsure. If yu have a knwn allergy t any f the materials in the prtective glves, please request an alternate brand/type f glves that are suitable fr the wrk being perfrmed. Safety Equipment All persns wrking in the labratry must familiarize themselves with the lcatin and the prper use f safety equipment. Safety shwers and eye wash funtains must be kept clear f bstructins t ensure they are accessible in an emergency. Eyewash funtains and safety shwers will prvide a cpius flw f cld water when activated that will accumulate n the flr if a drain is nt installed clse by. In the event f a chemical r bilgical expsure, yu shuld stand under the shwer r eye wash statin fr at least 15 minutes. In the case f eye expsure, yu must hld yur eyelids pen while the water flushes the eye area. Seek medical evaluatin if necessary [vi]

7 Schl f Natural Sciences and Mathematics Labratry Safety Regulatins Ventilatin, fume hds and bisafety cabinets Accrding t the HVAC Department, mst labratries are supplied with 100% fresh air makeup and get between 8-12 rm changes per hur between the hurs f 7:00 am and 10:00 pm, Mnday thrugh Friday. If yu are wrking utside f these hurs, yu may call HVAC at X 4375 and request the air circulatin be turned n. If yu cannt reach anyne in HVAC then yu shuld call the campus plice nn-emergency number (X4390) and request them t page HVAC fr yu. See Air Quality SOP # in Chemical Hygiene plan fr details. The fume hds shuld be fully peratinal 24 hurs a day, 7 days a week and are equipped with electrnic safety mnitrs. Fume shuld nly be used if the green light is displayed in the perating range. The safety mnitr will prduce an audible alarm, as well as a visual alarm (red light) when the perfrmance f the fume hd is nt sufficient t cntain the fumes being generated inside. Fr hds with vertical sliding sashes, the electrnic safety mnitr shuld be calibrated t perate safely when the air velcity entering the hd (face velcity) is 100+/- 10 ft per minute at a sash height f 12 inches. Raising the sash higher than 12 inches will trigger the alarm. Fume hds with hrizntal sliding sashes are designed t be accessed by sliding the sashes pen. Fr thse fume hds that have the capability t be pened hrizntally r vertically, ensure hrizntal sliding sashes are in the clsed psitin befre raising vertical sash. Fr thse that have nly vertical sashes, the face velcity shuld be maintained higher than 100 feet per minute t allw the vertical sash t be fully pen (12 inches) while maintaining the required face velcity fr safe peratin. The bisafety cabinets are Class II, Type A2 and are lcated in the Unified Science Center 1&2. These cabinets are used fr bicntainment utilizing psitive pressure inside, surrunded by a negative pressure air curtain. They utilize Ulpa air filtratin. Be careful nt t impede the air flw inside while wrking; be aware f safety precautins when using UV lights. It is best practice t clean and disinfect bisafety cabinet after each use, UV light use is nt an adequate disinfectin technique. Fr additinal infrmatin refer t Chemical Hygiene Plan sectin n Safety Equipment Guidelines which must be fllwed when utilizing a fume hd. A fume hd shuld never be used if the alarm light is red and/r the audible alarm is sunding. HVAC must be ntified immediately if a hd is malfunctining Chemicals must never be stred in a fume hd. Equipment, when nt in use, must nt be stred in a fume hd. The fume hd sash must be clsed at all times except when adjusting equipment. The set-up f equipment, chemicals and glassware must be at least 6 inches back frm the edge f the hd. Never place yur head inside a fume hd. If using a vertical sash, it shuld be used in the lwest psitin pssible. [vii]

8 Schl f Natural Sciences and Mathematics Labratry Safety Regulatins Safety Shields Safety shields f varius sizes are available fr use in the labratries. These include the sashes n the fume hds. They must be used wherever any chemical splattering, spraying, implsin r explsin is pssible. Vacuum distillatin and ther pressure related peratins require the use f these shields. Full face shields are als available fr added prtectin f the eyes and face. Muth Pipetting Muth pipetting is prhibited in all NAMS labratries and field facilities. Use nly apprved pipet bulb r pump. Cmpressed Gases Cmpressed gas cylinders must be used with an apprved cylinder hlding device and/r a cylinder cart. All persns using a cmpressed gas cylinder must be familiar with prper and safe prcedures fr its use. Fr additinal infrmatin, cnsult SOP # , Wrking with Cmpressed Gas Cylinders. Liquid Nitrgen and ther crygenics All persns using liquid nitrgen and ther crygenics such as dry ice (slidified carbn dixide) must be familiar with prper and safe prcedures fr its use. Apprpriate PPE must be wrn. Please refer t University SOP # fr specific requirements. Respnsibility fr Hazard Familiarity and Purchase f Chemicals N faculty r staff member will prcure r use a substance unless: The Chemical Hygiene Officer has apprve the chemical at the time f rdering, and the faculty/staff member has cmpleted a Hazardus Substance Apprval Frm He r she is familiar with all pssible hazards He r she has made a thrugh study n the handling f the substance what t d in the event f an accident r incident invlving this substance (this includes a review f the apprpriate SDS and HSFS). If SDSs are nt available fr the particular substance in the labratries, they can be requested frm the Regulatry Cmpliance Specialist, Risk Management Department in N-wing. He r she is prepared t take the initiative and respnsibility t fllw all safety recmmendatins and guidelines including prper PPE. He r she makes every attempt t eliminate r minimize all pssible hazards assciated with the substance. Nte: When wrking with chemicals, the user is respnsible fr the prper use, strage and annual inventry reprting until the material is transferred t the Chemical Strage Area r dispsed f accrding t federal and state regulatins. 9 Schl f Natural Sciences and Mathematics Labratry Safety Regulatins Strage f Chemicals Chemicals are t be prperly stred t minimize the pssibility f reactin during strage and t minimize danger in the event f a fire. Flammable cabinets are available fr strage f chemicals underneath the fume hds in the fllwing areas: USC1, 1 st Flr: 131,132,133,151,152,153,154 USC1, 2 nd Flr: 231,232,233,234,235,251,252,253,256 USC1, 3 rd Flr: 331,332,333,334,335,337,351,352,353,354 USC2, 2 nd Flr: 230, 231, USC2, 3 rd Flr: 316, 317, 318, 323,324, 325, 326 F-Wing: F-002,003, and 006 Nte: The chemical strage area was designed fr lng term strage f chemicals. Inventry f chemicals in all areas will be perfrmed n a regular basis and thse nt in immediate use, will be returned t the strage area r relevant prep rm. Perxide frmers Chemicals that frm perxides have a limited shelf life. In additin t dating the perxide frmer when received, the material shuld be dispsed f by the published guidelines. Fr additinal infrmatin, cnsult SOP # , Safe Handling f Perxide Frming Chemicals in the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Labeling f Chemicals All cntainers f chemicals must be labeled accrding t the PEOSH Hazard Cmmunicatin Standard and NJ Right t Knw Act requirements. 10 Schl f Natural Sciences and Mathematics Labratry Safety Regulatins Chemical Waste Dispsal All chemicals must be dispsed f accrding t state and federal regulatins. Prperly labeled chemical waste cntainers will be placed in the labratry fr all chemical waste generated during instructinal labratry experiments. Check with faculty r labratry staff fr apprved dispsal methds and if yu have any questins. Faculty must prepare, prperly label and maintain waste cntainers created in their advanced classes and research activities. Faculty and labratry staff are respnsible fr the prper dispsal f hazardus materials. If yu empty a chemical cntainer, ensure that the cntainer is dispsed f accrding t regulatry requirements. The lab staff can help ensure prper waste dispsal prcedures are fllwed. Remve the inventry bar cde label and give it t Eve Jawrski r designee s she can remve the item frm chemical inventry. Chemistry student lckers Students in labratry curses will be assigned a lcker and key and apprpriate equipment. It is the student s respnsibility t ensure that all items n their lcker lists are accunted fr, clean and in gd cnditin. Cracked r chipped glassware shuld be replaced when the lcker is checked in. Once assigned, the cntents f the lcker are the respnsibility f the student until check ut. Students are respnsible fr keeping their lckers secured and at NO TIME ARE CHEMICALS TO BE STORED IN THE LOCKERS. Lckers will be inspected during the semester fr ensure n chemicals are stred and that all glassware is prperly cleaned. A nte f vilatin will be left in the drawer if the cnditins abve are nt met. Chemistry Lcker Guidelines: Check-in Lckers and keys will be assigned by the Instructr during the first lab sessin f each curse. Students will ensure that the items n their lcker list are in their lckers and in gd cnditin by signing the check in sheet. If there are items missing, they shuld be nted n the list. Labratry staff (Current Lab Drawer Crdinatr) shuld be ntified f what items are needed. Check ut All lcker cntents must be clean and in gd cnditin at the time f check-ut. Brken items and inexcusable damage t equipment will result in charges t the student. Students shuld be sure t clear their recrds by retrieving their checkut frm fr the returned equipment. Outstanding items in the checkut files indicate that the items have nt been returned. Students wh d nt clear their checkut recrds will be charged fr thse items at the end f the term. Charges Students will be charged fr unreturned r damaged items. Payments fr breakage shuld be made during the term directly t the Bursars ffice. Any utstanding charges at the end f the term will result in a hld being placed n the student s accunt and pssible cancellatin f registratin fr the next term. [x]

The lcker checkut charge applies nly if the lab staff is required t check ut the lcker at the end f the term withut the student being present. Students withdrawing frm the lab curse are required t checkut ut f their lckers and return all equipment t the lab staff at the time f drpping the curse t avid any f the abve charges. Special Regulatins: Special Hazardus Substances and Standard Operating Prcedures The regulatins and safety requirements included in the Chemical Hygiene Safety Plan must be cnsulted and fllwed when wrking with special hazardus substances (allergens, embry txins and chemicals f mderate chrnic r high acute txicity, highly txic substances r OSHA regulated substances). Bisafety All faculty/staff and student research at Stcktn University invlving bilgical materials must be registered with and apprved by the Institutinal Bisafety Cmmittee (IBC) befre initiatin f experiments. Please fill ut all necessary frms t gain apprval frm this cmmittee. Institutinal Animal Care and Use Cmmittee (IACUC) All researchers using live animals must submit an Animal Use Prtcl t be reviewed and apprved by the IACUC befre research can begin.
