1 The Fiber Arts Studi at BARN Safety & Use Prcedures 1. Overview The BARN General Safety Guidelines Rules & Prcedures apply all times t the Fiber Arts Studi (Studi). Supplemental safety and usage prcedures specific t the Studi are dcumented herein. The prcedures in sectin 1 apply t all Prgram Areas in the Studi. Additinal specific prcedures fr each Prgram Area may be fund in their respective sectins (Needle Arts, Sewing, Surface Design, and Weaving & Basketry). 1.1 Safety Lcatin f emergency equipment and infrmatin: In case f emergency, dial 911; additinal emergency numbers are n the wall near the Studi telephne, and shuld be cnsulted in the event f any mishap Shut ff valve fr the sprinkler system is lcated inside the mechanical rm, next dr t the main entrance t the Studi Emergency eyewash statin is lcated in the Dye Rm First aid kits are lcated at the Studi frnt desk and in the Dye Rm Fire extinguisher is lcated n the wall next t the main entrance t the Studi Incident Reprting All accidents, large r small must be reprted immediately t the Instructr, Mnitr, r directly t the BARN Staff. If necessary, reprt the accident t lcal plice, emergency management, and/r ambulance service General Safety Infrmatin If there are any medical r physical cnditins that may pse a health hazard, this cnditin must be brught t the attentin f the Instructr r Mnitr Shes are t be wrn at all times When using equipment: D nt wrk in the Studi alne D nt wear lse clthing (e.g., ties, scarves, shawls, jewelry, lse sleeves) Lng hair must be tied back Never use equipment withut cmpletin f training and the apprval f the Studi r Instructr r Mnitr; always ask fr help if necessary Never use damaged r malfunctining equipment; reprt any malfunctining equipment t the Instructr r Mnitr immediately Never use equipment if yu are tired D nt sit r stand n tables, cunters, r equipment; d nt use the furniture r equipment ther than fr its intended purpse Turn ff and/r unplug all electrical equipment when nt in use Apprved February 2, 2017 Page 1

Specific areas r rms within the Studi may have additinal restrictins, as nted belw. 1.3 Usage Prcedures & Maintenance In general, the Studi shall be kept clean, rganized, and free f clutter and debris. Each persn accessing the Studi is respnsible fr cleaning up after themselves and prperly stre all equipment and turn ff (and/r unplug) all electrical equipment after use (including cmputers, lights, radis, and fans) befre they leave. Failure t d s may result in a revcatin f access privileges. Specific areas r rms within the Studi may have additinal r specific prcedures, as nted belw. During a Studi class, the Studi must be kept clean in accrdance t the prcedure utlined by the Instructr. At the end f the class, each wrk space must be cleaned, and any equipment used must be cleaned and returned, r a replacement fee will be charged. In rder t ensure all equipment remains clean and functinal and thers prjects are prtected, n fd, drink, r smking is allwed in the Studi. 2. The fllwing are additinal safety rules fr the Sewing areas: Sewing equipment must nt be used withut prper training, the industrial machines can be very dangerus Never adjust sewing machine tensining levers withut prper training; ask fr help in getting the best stitch n each machine, remember, weight and size f bbbin thread and tp thread always need t be exactly matched D nt attempt t re-thread an unthreaded machine withut cnsulting the specific threading diagram fr each machine When sewing fr lng perids f time, fllw the precautins listed in sectin t reduce strain n the bdy 3.2 Usage Restrictins Access t the equipment in the Sewing areas are further restricted beynd the general restrictins captured in sectin 1.2. Additinal training n the specialized equipment is required. A ntice will be psted with a list f authrized members. 5 Fiber Arts Studi Safety & Use Prcedures Screen Printing Many f the materials in Screen Printing are nn-txic because they are water based, and certified by the American Arts and Crafts Institute. This includes the inks, extender base, and screen filler. Hwever, everyne with authrized access t this area is advised f these ptentially hazardus situatins, and is directed t take the fllwing precautins: Prtective glves are t be wrn when handling pht-sensitive emulsin, emulsin sensitizer, and emulsin remver If the use f a slvent such as denatured alchl, lacquer thinner, r paint thinner is required in screen cleaning r sme ther prcess, the material is t be used wearing prtective glves and in a slvent bth Haze Remver Paste It is a strng alkaline and will burn skin with prlnged cntact and must be used with prtective gggles and glves; in the event f cntact with the skin, flush with cld water Industrial Hygiene Husekeeping: TBD Print tables: Always use a drp clth and/r plastic t prtect print table surface D nt cut n print tables D nt place sharp r heavy bjects n print tables Always replace plastic cvers after use D nt leave wrk n print table vernight unless abslutely necessary (and then, leave a nte with name, date, etc.; therwise the wrk will be remved) Wd r Frmica design tables: Cut fabric here with scissrs nly D nt use knives, dyes r adhesives n this table Clean paint, graphite, r ink frm tables immediately after use Use rtary cutters r cut mats n plastic mat r cutting bard nly Never leave irn unattended when plugged in; unplug when nt in use; empty water frm irn when dne. At this time, equipment may nt be remved frm the Studi but may be reserved fr use fr up t ne week. 5. Weaving & Basketry 5.1 Safety Fllw safety rules fund in sectin 1.1. Specific areas within Weaving and Basketry have additinal safety rules (as nted belw) Weaving Safety issues related t animal, vegetable, and synthetic fibers: Animal Fibers (includes angra, camel hair, hrsehair, wl, and thers): A risk f anthrax exists frm the wl r hair f diseased animals Fibers cntaminated with mld, spres, etc. may cause allergic reactins r pssibly disease Vegetable Fibers (cttn, flax, hemp, jute, sisal, thers): Chrnic expsure may lead t lung disease, chrnic brnchitis and emphysema which may be caused by fungus, mildew, dyes, fiber treatments, etc. in these fibers Flax is txic if inhaled Synthetic fibers (acetate, acrylics, nyln, plyester, rayn, triacetate, thers): Inhalatin f dusts may cause respiratry effects Avid frmaldehyde-treated fibers Take these precautins when wrking with fibers: Stre fibers in a clean dry lcatin Buy washed and disinfected fibers when pssible Accumulatin f dust, lint, and yarn waste can pse respiratry prblems and fire hazards Ensure apprpriate ventilatin and use a use a dust mask when cleaning Vacuum r sweep arund the lm befre and after each prject Dust, vacuum and wipe-dwn all parts f the lm befre set-up Pick up yarns frm flr areas whenever pssible. Take these precautins when weaving, t reduce strain n the bdy: Maintain prper seating height fr each weaving prcedure; make sure yu sit upright with yur shulders parallel t the harnesses while weaving and threading Put weight n bth feet simultaneusly when threading, and alternately fr balance when treadling When weaving, pull the beater at its exact center and with alternate arms t reduce uneven back strain; knees shuld drp slightly belw hips s that the energy necessary fr treadling can be transmitted frm the hips and nt the back Apprved February 2, 2017 Page 6

Members and nn-members wh are attending a class, may use the equipment under the direct supervisin f the Instructr. 5.3 Usage Prcedures & Maintenance In additin t the prcedures fund in sectin 1.3, fllwing are additinal prcedures fr the Weaving and Basketry area: Re-shelve all yarns that were used in the designing, warping, and weaving prcess - including cnes, skeins and spls used at the design tables, warping bard areas, bbbin winder areas, and at the lm Never apply dye t yarns n the lms r in the weaving studi; use ec dyes ONLY in the surface design print studi r Dye Rm (see sectin 4) Mve warping bards away frm lms after cmpleting the warping prcedure. Return raddles, lease sticks, steel rds t their strage lcatins after use.
