Hazardus materials are substances that are flammable, cmbustible, explsive, txic, nxius, crrsive, xidizing, an irritant r radiactive. A hazardus material release r spill can pse a risk t life, health r prperty. An incident can result in the evacuatin f a few peple, a sectin f a facility r an entire neighbrhd. In additin t n-site hazards, yu shuld be aware f the ptential fr an ff-site incident effecting yur peratins. Yu shuld als be aware f hazardus materials used in facility prcesses and in the cnstructin f the physical plant. Detailed definitins as well as lists f hazardus materials can be btained frm the Envirnmental Prtectin Agency (EPA) and the Occupatinal Safety and Health Administratin (OSHA). T help prtect yurself, yu must identify and label all hazardus materials stred, handled, prduced and/r dispsed f in yur area. Yu must fllw gvernment regulatins that apply t yur facility. And yu must btain and have access t Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) fr all hazardus materials at yur lcatin. If yu have questins r cncerns regarding hazardus materials, yu shuld cntact EKU Envirnmental Health and Safety at r Fr releases, spills r incidents requiring special training, prcedures, equipment (PPE) that is beynd the abilities f present persnnel, take the fllwing steps: Immediately ntify invlved persnnel and evacuate the release r spill area. Islate and r cntrl that area. Secure the lcatin. Pull the fire alarm if building evacuatin is desired. Call 911 t reprt the incident. Give the peratr the fllwing infrmatin: Yur name, telephne number, and lcatin. Time and type f incident. Name and quantity f the material, if knwn. Extent f injuries r damage, if any. The key persn n site shuld evacuate the invlved area at nce and seal it ff t prevent further cntaminatin f thers until the arrival f emergency respnders. HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, and Air-Cnditining) systems shuld be shut dwn. Anyne wh is cntaminated by the release r spill shuld avid cntact with thers as much as pssible; remain in the vicinity, and give his/her name t the emergency respnders. Washing ff cntaminatin and any required first aid shuld be started immediately. N effrt t cntain r clean up spills and r releases shuld be made unless yu have been trained. Take apprpriate steps t make sure n ne evacuates thrugh the cntaminated area. If an alarm sunds, fllw established building evacuatin prcedures. An Incident Cmmand Pst may be established near the emergency site. Keep clear f the cmmand pst unless yu have fficial business. D nt re-enter the area until directed by emergency respnders.

Bring yur persnal shelter kit, enugh fd and water fr a few hurs, yur Tne Alert Radi, a prtable AM/FM radi, and a flashlight int this rm. We recmmend that yu keep bth yur Tne Alert Radi and Shelter In Place kit in yur selected shelter. Shut and seal the dr t the rest f the building with plastic and duct tape. Put duct tape n electrical utlets and vents. Use duct tape and plastic t cver any windws. Nte: Yu will nt run ut f air in a shelter rm. 4 ENHANCED SHELTER IN PLACE (ESIP) SYSTEM OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS (Excerpted frm the Operatins & Maintenance Manual) (Enhanced Shelter In Place) (See Manual fr full peratins and maintenance infrmatin) Alumni Cliseum, Cmbs Building, Mdel Gymnasium, Perkins Building, Thmpsn Hall, University Building, and Whitlck Building are equipped with Cllective Prtectin Systems (CPS). These buildings have been mdified t prvide Enhanced Shelter In Place (ESIP) prtectin fr persnnel in the event f a hazardus chemical release at the nearby Blue Grass Army Dept. The ESIP prtectin system cnsists f permanent architectural sealing measures, mdificatins t the HVAC systems, and installatin f an ESIP cntrl panel (See Panel Lcatins page fr Panel Lcatins). The Majr System Cmpnents: Cntrl Panel Dampers Perimeter Drs HVAC System Activatin f the cntrl panel will: shut dwn the heating, ventilatin, and air-cnditining system and clse designated mechanical islatin dampers. Clsure f the exterir perimeter drs and windws will seal the prtected area, reduce utside air infiltratin, and prvide a level f prtectin fr the persnnel inside until the hazardus release has been cleared. Emergency Switch The emergency switch is a red buttn lcated n the frnt lwer right hand side f the cntrl panel. Pushing the emergency switch will start the ESIP system int peratin. Once the system is in peratin, pushing the emergency switch again will deactivate the ESIP system. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM START UP Mve all persnnel int the prtected area when ntified that a hazardus event has ccurred. Manually clse and latch all perimeter drs. Verify that all exterir windws in the prtected area are clsed and latched. Start the ESIP prtectin system by pushing the red start buttn n the face f the cntrl panel. Check t insure that all green pilt lights n the face f the cntrl panel are illuminated. The ESIP system is perating prperly if all cntrl panel pilt lights are illuminated. Prceed t the trubleshting sectin f the manual if any f the cntrl panel pilt lights fail t illuminate. Keep all drs and windws clsed and remain in the prtected area until ntified that the hazard has been cleared. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM SHUT DOWN After being ntified that the hazard has been cleared, stp the ESIP prtectin system by pushing the red start buttn again n the face f the cntrl panel. All pilt lights n the face f the cntrl panel shuld g ff verifying that the system has shut dwn. Perimeter drs may nw be pened and persnnel shuld exit t the utside. D nt exit a prtected area int an unprtected part f a building (a building r prtin f a building where the HVAC system was nt shut dwn). Yu may be directed t relcate ut f the area affected by the hazardus material r chemical agent release. D Nt Return t the Invlved Znes (2E and 2D) until EMA Officials Advise that the Areas Are Safe.
