27 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES POLICE/FIRE/MEDICAL EMERGENCY DIAL: 911 Fr Nn-Emergency Cncerns Dial FIRE Activate the nearest fire alarm pull statin and call if pssible t reprt the lcatin and cause f the fire if yu knw what it is. OFFICIAL KEUKA COMMUNICATIONS During a campus emergency, Keuka Cllege will distribute infrmatin t the campus cmmunity utilizing the fllwing methds: EVERYONE MUST LEAVE IMMEDIATELY when a fire alarm is activated, even if there are n bvius signs f an emergency! DO NOT use the elevatr! Remain calm and assist thers in safely getting ut. Cnfine the fire by clsing all drs and windws if pssible. Extinguish the fire if yu have been trained and it is safe t d s. Evacuate the building t a safe lcatin away frm the structure. If circumstances permit, secure yur area by clsing drs and lcking them if yu wuld nrmally d s when yu leave fr the day. Fllw directins given by emergency persnnel and respnd t a lcatin at least 50 feet frm the building. D nt re-enter until authrized t d s. Alarms mean LEAVE THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY! 28 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES POLICE/FIRE/MEDICAL EMERGENCY DIAL: 911 Fr Nn-Emergency Cncerns Dial If a serius injury r illness ccurs n campus, call 911 cntact Campus Safety at In the case f minr injury r illness, prvide basic first aid (if yu are certified) using the first aid supplies lcated in yur area. In case f serius injury r illness immediately perfrm the fllwing steps: 1. Attempt t wake the victim 2. If they are nt breathing r they are just gasping, call Begin cmpressins (30) at a rate f 100/min (hard/fast, but allwing fr recil) 4. Pps/snaps are nrmal; YOU CAN T make the victim WORSE!! 5. After 30 cmpressins, begin rescue breathing if victim is nt breathing 6. Use a barrier mask if yu have ne 7. Chin lift; give 2 breaths large enugh that yu see the chest rise 8. If the breaths dn t g in, repsitin the head again t clear the airway 9. Cntinue with cmpressins and breathing (rati 30:2 breaths) 10. Keep ging, until an AED is brught if yu have ne 11. Place the pads n chest (see tips ther side), and fllw the instructins frm the unit 12. Cntinue CPR/AED until help arrives r the victim wakes up Cnscius Chking Assess the scene fr safety and cnfirm that the patient is chking. Obtain cnsent t assist the patient. Lean the persn frward and give 5 back blws with the heel f yur hand. If the freign bject is nt disldged, fllw the back blws with 5 quick, upward abdminal thrusts by reaching arund the patient frm behind and placing the thumb side f the fist abve the patient s belly buttn. Grab the fist with the ther hand and give quick upward thrusts knwn as the Heimlich maneuver. (NOTE: Give chest thrusts t a chking persn wh is pregnant r t big fr yu t reach arund.) If there are witnesses present, designate smene t cntact 911 and then Campus Safety at Cntinue with alternating 5 back blws with 5 abdminal thrusts until the bstructin is cleared r until the patient becmes uncnscius. If patient becmes uncnscius, lay patient n his r her back. Tilt the head back and attempt 2 rescue breaths. If the breaths d nt g in, re-tilt the head and try again. If the chest des nt rise, give 30 chest cmpressins. Lk in the muth fr the freign bdy r bject Remve if ne is seen by perfrming a finger sweep, if nt, cntinue alternating 30 chest cmpressins with 2 rescue breaths. Attempt 2 rescue breaths again, if they g in, but yur patient is still nt breathing cntinue with CPR until a trained fficer, the Cllege Nurse, r a mre trained persn arrives. If yu are alne and chking, GO TO A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE ARE, if pssible. If yu can nt find assistance, yu can perfrm abdminal thrusts n yurself by leaning ver a firm bject such as the back f a chair and pressing yur abdmen int it t clear the bstructin. Fainting, Uncnsciusness and Shck If yu witness a patient faint, r hear smene cmplaining f lightheadedness, have the patient lie r sit dwn and rest. Dial 911 then cntact Campus Safety at Keep patient cmfrtable, nt ht r cld. Ask r lk fr emergency medical I.D. If trained, prvide care, and treat ther injuries as necessary until help arrives. If pssible, lk fr r ask abut an emergency medical I.D (i.e.: bracelet, necklace.) Keep patient cmfrtable, nt ht r cld. Fractures and Sprains Keep patient still Keep injured area immbile. 29 Respnse Guidlelines Active Shter Incident r Immediate Physical Threat The fllwing guidelines are intended t reduce yur persnal risk in the unlikely event that an Active Shter Incident shuld ccur n campus. If yu are utside a building when an event ccurs, yu shuld take immediate cver, preferably inside a building away frm the incident, circumstances permitting. If yu are in a building when an event ccurs: When instructed t stay in place: Secure yurself and the immediate area. Lck and barricade drs Turn ff lights Clse blinds Remain quiet Silence cellphne ringers Keep yurself ut f sight and find adequate cver When instructed t evacuate: Have an escape plan in mind Leave prmptly using nearest exit Leave yur belngings behind Keep yur hands visible When Law Enfrcement Arrives: As a last resrt: The last ptin yu have, if caught in an pen area, may be t fight back Take actin yur life is in imminent danger Attempt t incapacitate the active shter Act with physical aggressin, yell and thrw items at the active shter Remain calm and fllw instructins Put dwn any items in yur hands and immediately raise yur hands Keep hands visible at all times Avid making quick mvements tward fficers such as attempting t hld n t them fr safety Avid Pinting, screaming and/r yelling The first fficers t arrive will nt stp t help injured persns.
