Additinal infrmatin frm DHS, Natinal Retail Federatin, Retail Industry Leaders Assciatin, Natinal Tactical Officers Assciatin and Fairfax Cunty, VA Plice Department dcument: Active Shter Hw t Respnd. Active Shter Situatins Prfile f an active shter An "Active Shter" is an individual actively engaged in killing r attempting t kill peple in a cnfined area; in mst cases, active shters use firearm(s) and there is n pattern r methd t their selectin f victims. Active shter situatins are unpredictable and evlve quickly. Typically, the immediate deplyment f law enfrcement is required t stp the shting and mitigate harm t victims. Thunderstrms Avid water fixtures, telephne lines and any electrical cnducting materials. Stay inside buildings. Mdern buildings are designed t withstand significant damage resulting frm thunderstrm wind, rain, hail, and lightning strikes. While in yur car, keep in mind that because cars are lw prfile and supprted n rubber tires (an effective electric insulatr), they are generally (but nt always) safe frm lightning strikes; electrical current will als generally fllw a path arund, rather than thrugh, the passenger cmpartment (nt necessarily

Evacuate all trailers and temprary structures; prceed immediately t a structurally secure building. G t the interir area f the building. Avid west and suth facing exterir walls and rms (trnades generally travel frm the suthwest t the nrtheast in the USA). Take cver under a sturdy bject. Prtect yur head, neck and face. Stay away frm windws, glass and items that might fall. Depending n yur lcatin, keep the fllwing in mind: If in a huse r small building, g t the basement r cellar. If in a high-rise building, g t an interir hallway n the lwest level pssible. D nt take the elevatr. If in a car and the trnad is nearby, get ut trnades can mve swiftly and are ften erratic. If in an pen field, lie face dwn in a ditch r nearest ravine and cver yur head with yur hands: this prcedure is preferable t remaining in a car r mbile hme.
