Eye Wash and Safety Shwer Unless therwise specified r exempt by the Directr f the Department f Envirnmental Health and Safety, each new and renvated Labratry, rm, area r facility in which chemicals, r bilgical materials are used r stred shall be equipped with the fllwing: Eye wash and safety shwer: 1. Eye wash A plumbed emergency eyewash meeting the mst recent editin f ANSI Z358.1 and Appendices. Hand held single r duble stream hses are nt a substitute fr an ANSI apprved hard plumbed eye wash. These units may be used t supplement the apprved shwers and eye washes. The unit must be supplied with tepid water nly. Lcate the unit within a 10 secnd travel distance f the hazard wrk area and the path leading t the unit free f bstructins. 2. Safety Shwer A unit is required in the physical space if crrsive materials are used. Basin type units must be plumbed t a drain t meet the testing requirements f ANSI Z A plumbed emergency shwer meeting the mst recent editin f Z358.1 and Appendices. The unit must be supplied with tepid water nly. Lcate the units within a 10 secnd travel distance f the hazard wrk area and the path leading t the unit free f bstructins. A unit is required in the physical space if crrsive materials are used. Labratry Exhaust Ventilatin The general exhaust ventilatin fr all spaces where hazardus materials are used r stred shall be designed fr between 10 and 12 air changes per hur, unless prir apprval is granted by DEHS. Lcal exhaust fans and the general labratry exhaust must meet the mst recent editin f ANSI Z9.5 and Appendices and the mst recent editin f NFPA Labratry Chemical Fume Hds Must meet the mst recent editin f ANSI Z9.5 and Appendices and NFPA 45. Units must meet the perfrmance requirements utlined in the mst recent additin f ANSI/ASHRAE 110. Fume hds shall nt be the sle means f rm air exhaust. Unless therwise nted in bid dcument, labratries shall be designed with a ttal f 36 f linear width fume hd space fr each user. Fume hds shall be cnstructed f a nn cmbustible, nn prus material selected t resist crrsin and fr the service intended. Special hd types (per chlric acid, radiactive, bilgical) must receive prir DEHS apprval. An audible/visual alarm and flw measuring device is required t indicate lw and/r high face velcities. It must have a digital display f the actual face velcity. The fume hd must be designed fr a face velcity f 100 feet per minute at 50% face pening. Units with bth hrizntal and vertical sashes are preferred. 2. Fume Hd Exhaust Fans a. Must be lcated utside f the building husing the lab, r in a separate rm that is maintained at a negative pressure t the rest f the building and prvides direct access t the utside fr discharge ducts. 3. Exhaust Trunks, Canpy Hds, r ther Lcal Exhaust Ventilatin Units a. Must meet the design criteria utlined in the latest versin f the ACGIH s Industrial Ventilatin Manual. These units will be required if there is a specific need based n the equipment and/r prcesses planned fr the labratry space. b. Autclave rms in additin t having a canpy hd r ther suitable means f lcal exhaust, shall have a minimum f 10 air changes per hur. Envirnmental Health & Safety Labratry Equipment Page 2

Will be designed t meet the criteria utlined in the latest versin f the ACGIH s Industrial Ventilatin Manual and the applicable NFPA cdes. Gas cylinder cabinets are required if the fllwing gases are used: Hydrgen Carbn Mnxide Silane Hydride Gases Any Highly Txic Gases (NFPA Health Hazard Rating f 3 r 4) Chlrine Crrsive Gases Reactive Gases Any gas with a NFPA Health Hazard Rating f 2 with n physilgical warning prperties. b. Gas cabinets shall be equipped with an apprved autmatic sprinkler when string flammable r txic cmpressed gases (IFC 2012) c. Cabinets will be selected based n the prperties and hazards f the gases t be stred therein. They must be apprved by EHS prir t purchase, and must be certified prir t use. 5. Gas Detectin Systems Labratries with gas cylinders that are flammable, txic, r pse an asphyxiatin hazard must have a gas detectin system. The gas detectin system must be apprved by EHS. 1. Are required if wrk invlving infectius materials will take place in the lab, and must be apprved by EHS. 2. All bilgical safety cabinets must be NSF listed, UL apprved, and installed in accrdance with the manufacturer s requirements. 3. Bilgical safety cabinets must be lcated away frm means f egress and ther high traffic areas. 4. A bisafety cabinet shall nt be installed directly under air supply inlets. 5. Other bilgical cntainment devices, if incrprated t address the hazards, must be apprved by EHS. 6. Cabinets will be selected based n the prperties and hazards f the bilgical and chemicals t be used therein. They must be apprved by EHS prir t purchase, and must be certified by an utside cntractr with the apprpriate credentials prir t use. 7. When Class II Type A bilgical safety cabinets are ducted, the duct must be canpy style and have an audible and visible exhaust alarm. Envirnmental Health & Safety Labratry Equipment Page 3

This will ensure that the requirements f the ASME Biler and Pressure Vessel Cde are met. 2. The manual cntrl must be lcated in an easily accessible and safe lcatin fr usage, nt behind the unit r in an area that is hard t get at. This feature is critical in emergency situatins because it allws the cmplete peratin f a cycle with n electrical pwer. It shuld als allw manual exhausting f the sterilizer chamber during a malfunctin that wuld therwise trap a lad in the chamber. 3. The autclave dr shuld be designed with several independent mechanical and cntrl features that prvide fr safety. 4. A cntrl lck ut switch in the dr that prevents starting a cycle if the dr is nt clsed and lcked. 5. Mechanical steam pressure lck chamber pressure shuld "activate" a mechanism engaging the lck mechanism. This will prevent an peratr frm pening a dr if pressure exists in the chamber. 6. Visual chamber gauge that easily identifies pressure in the chamber must be accessible t the peratr. This gauge is a back up t the cntrl read ut and will perate with n electrical pwer t the unit. E. Facility Cnsideratins 1. The flr under autclave shall be mnlithic, seamless r heat sealed, cved and water tight 2. Easy access fr maintenance and repair 3. Sufficient space fr waste cllectin and strage 4. Insulate expsed pipes 5. A crrsin resistant basin is prvided t prevent leakage 6. A stainless steel canpy hd is prvided ver the exit dr f the autclave t capture heat and steam 7. An emergency shut ff shuld be lcated within the reach f the peratr and between the peratr and the rm exit 8. Autclave rms shuld have a minimum f 10 air changes per hur. All wners, users and/r cntractrs, wh are respnsible fr the installatin f bilers r pressure vessels in this State, shall btain a certificate f inspectin frm the Biler Safety Prgram prir t the peratin f the biler r pressure vessel. Ntwithstanding this prvisin, any newly installed biler r pressure vessel may be perated fr testing necessary fr issuance f a certificate f inspectin. F. Chemical Strage Cabinets: Surce: 1. Sufficient number f cabinets shall be installed t accmmdate the anticipated quantity and type. 2. If caustic and acidic liquids are stred, separate crrsive cabinets are required. G. Crrsive strage Cabinets 1. Shuld be manufactured in accrdance with FM apprval r UL listings. 2. Are recmmended, but nt required t be ventilated thrugh the labratry exhaust system. 3. Shall have shelving cnstructed t prevent spillage f cntents with tight fitting jints, welded r riveted liquid tight bttms, dr sills f at least tw inches, and lckable cabinet drs that are self clsing and self latching. 4. Crrsive materials shuld nt be stred in metal cabinets unless the materials f cnstructin are specifically treated t be crrsin resistant. H. Flammable Strage Cabinets 1. Are manufactured in accrdance with FM apprval r UL Listings. 2. Flammable strage cabinets will nt be ventilated thrugh the labratry exhaust system unless: Specific circumstances, such as maldrus chemical, require venting They are vented by a separate dedicated system. Prir written apprval must be given by DEHS. The design must cnfrm t current NFPA and lcal cde requirements. 3. Shall have shelving cnstructed t prevent spillage f cntents with tight fitting jints, welded r riveted liquid tight bttms, dr sills f at least tw inches, and lckable cabinet drs that are self clsing and self latching. I. Miscellaneus Requirements 1. Lab hazard sign hlder lcated in the crridr at all entrances t the lab area. 2. Access t a crridr installed emergency phne with direct dial t Public Safety within 10 secnds r 100 ft travel distance f the labratry. Envirnmental Health & Safety Labratry Equipment Page 5

Grund Fault Circuit Interrupters shall be installed in labratry settings where electric utlets are within 6 feet f water surces. 4. An illuminated laser warning sign may be required if a Class 4 laser will be perated in the rm. The sign must be psted at the entrance f the facility and must be capable f being interlcked t the laser pwer r t the shutter that allws the laser beam t exit the laser unit. Cnsult with Envirnmental Health and Safety prir t purchase. 5. Labratries with peratins that may require the use f lab cats must have an apprpriate strage area fr the lab cats. 6. All faucets will have backflw preventers and/r vacuum breaks t prevent cntaminatin f the ptable water supply. J. Secnd Means f Egress A secnd way ut f the labratry is required if any f the fllwing cnditin(s) exist (as required by NFPA 45). The secnd means f egress must pen ut, away frm the labratry interir and cannt exit int a mre hazardus cnditin. 1. The fume hd is lcated adjacent (within 10 ft.) f the primary means f exit access. 2. A labratry wrk area cntains an explsin hazard lcated s that an incident wuld blck escape frm r access t the labratry wrk area. 3. A labratry wrk area within a Class A labratry unit exceeds 46.5 m 2 (500 ft 2 ) 4. A labratry wrk area within a Class B, Class C, r Class D labratry unit exceeds 93 m 2 (1000 ft 2 ) 5. A cmpressed gas cylinder larger than lecture bttle size is lcated such that it culd prevent safe egress in the event f an accidental release f cylinder cntents. 6. A crygenic cntainer is lcated such that it culd prevent safe egress in the event f accidental release f cntainer cntents. 7. A fume hd is lcated between a user and an exit. 8. A gas cylinder strage area r cabinet is lcated between a user and an exit. 9. Any gas cylinder with a health, fire r reactivity hazard rating f 3 r 4 is used in the space. Labratry animal facilities shall be designed and cnstructed accrding t the minimum standards specified in the Guide fr the Care and Use f Labratry Animals t assure AAALAC accreditatin. 2. Agricultural animal facilities shall be designed and cnstructed accrding t the minimum standards specified in the Guide fr the Care and Use f Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching. L. High hazard labratries and areas that use specialized equipment (i.e. magnets) r perfrm specialized peratins will require additinal measures that may nt addressed in this dcument.
