3 YMCA Adaptive Programs Y Penguins Aquatic Club - Wright Crescent - September 21 st 2016 May 31 st 2017 The Kingston Y Penguins Aquatic Club is a swim team for children with physical disabilities and their ablebodied siblings. Participants learn through sport, how to set goals and develop self-discipline, while building self-confidence. The heart of the program is learning how to maintain a positive attitude while nourishing a focus on ability. New registrants please contact Vicki Keith, at Vicki_keith@kingston.ymca.ca, prior to registering. Independence in the water is encouraged for new participants but not required. Siblings should be able to swim one length of the pool. Families will determine the number of training sessions per week for each participant directly with the coach. A minimum of 2 practices per week is required. Junior Penguins Monday & Wednesday 5:00 5:45 PM 6+ years (co-ed) $ plus YMCA Membership Fee This group includes swimmers who are not registered as competitive swimmers yet. As part of this membership fee Junior Penguins receive a team T shirt and bathing cap. (These swimmers can participate in the annual Y Penguins swim meet The Big Chill). Development Penguins Monday Thursday 3:30 5:00 PM $ plus YMCA Membership Fee This group includes competitive swimmers up to 14 years of age. As part of their membership Development Penguins also recieve a bathing suit, a ll meet fees, Swim Ontario fees and Swimming Canada fees. Senior Penguins Monday Thursday 3:30 5:00 PM Friday 6:00 7:00 AM $ plus YMCA Membership Fee This group includes competitive swimmers over 15 years of age, as well as any Penguin who is swimming at the Provincial and National level. As part of their membership Senior Penguins also recieve a bathing suit, a ll meet fees, Swim Ontario fees and Swimming Canada fees. Subjects include anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, exercise design, nutrition and liability. Fee includes course materials, manual and final examination. Individual Conditioning level 1+2 Personal Training Course Members: $ HST Non-Members: $ HST Nov. 5, 12, 19, 26 8AM - 1PM YMCA Canada IC #1+2 course is the prerequisite for personal training certification. Subjects include anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, exercise design, nutrition and liability. There will be a minimum of 20 hours apprenticeship expected. We use our fully certied instructors to ensure a learning plan that is right for your child. This allows children and youth to learn at their own pace and focus on their goals in a safe environment. Adults: Learning to swim later in life can be a fun, rewarding experience. Adults learn differently than children and our instructors are trained in adult education to go step-by-step and teach you foundational techniques to master your swimming moves with private adult swimming lessons. Our private swim lessons can be catered to adults wishing to improve their fitness in the water. Adult Athletes: Already know how to swim? Private swim training is available for those who want to work on their endurance and stamina. We provide specialized swim training for swimmers participating in triathlons. 8 Become a Lifeguard & First Aid Training Become a Lifeguard - Wright Crescent Step 1 Bronze Star Under 14 years of age Members/Non-Members: $ The Bronze Star is a transitional introductory lifesaving course. It is excellent preparation for the bronze medallion course. Participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills individually and in partners. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard. Includes a timed 400 m swim. Sunday 9AM - 10AM Sept Nov. 27 Step 2 Bronze Medallion & Emergency B Must be 13 years of age or have completed Bronze Star Members/Non-Members: $ HST Teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defence methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500 m timed swim. Sat. & Sun. 9AM - 5PM Oct.15, 16 & 22, 23 Step 3 Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid with CPR C Must have completed Bronze Medallion & Emergency B or Standard First Aid (current or not current) Members/Non-Members: $ HST Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certifications. The Bronze Cross course includes a 600 m timed swim. Must have completed Bronze Medallion. Sat. & Sun. 9AM - 5PM Nov. 12,13 & 19, 20 Step 4 National Lifeguard Service Must have completed Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid with CPR-C, 16 years of age Members/Non-Members: $ HST National Lifeguard Standard is Canada s professional lifeguard standard. National lifeguard training develops a strong understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment as well as a mature and responsible attitude towards the lifeguards role. National Lifeguard training emphasizes prevention and effective rescue response in emergencies including first aid training. Candidates develop teamwork, leadership, communication skills. Standard First Aid incorporates all of Emergency First Aid and is designed for those who require a more in-depth understanding of first aid including; legal implications of first aid treatment, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries an pone and joint injuries, chest injuries and medical emergencies. This includes a CPR C Certification. Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid and CPR C certfication is required two (2) years after your original certification. The National Lifeguard recertificatinon is required every two (2) years. 9 Adult Programs at the YMCA Adult Programs - YMCA West Body Basics Bootcamp Members: $ Non-Members : $ This Bootcamp includes intervals, calisthenics and body weight exercises mixed with cardio and strength training. This bootcamp will push you harder than you would push yourself. Although our trainers may push you like a drill sergeant, our goal is to offer encouragement rather than intimidation. We want you to have tons of fun but please be prepared for some high intensity training! This workshop is perfect for the beginner as Haleema will go through basic belly dancing technique and movement, veil technique and provide fun coreography. Whether you want to gain muscle mass, lose weight or reduce body fat percentage, this program will give you 3 personal trainer-led classes a week for 12 weeks of great workouts to help motivate you to meet your goals, whatever they may be! In addition to your work outs, there will be a weekly group discussion on nutrition, weight management and goal setting to better ensure your success. 11 Adult Programs - Wright Crescent Living Well Chronic Pain Self- Management Program Members: Free (Register at the YMCA) Non-Members: Free (Register with Living Well) This workshop helps people who are experiencing a wide range of chronic pain conditions such as musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia, repetititve strain injury, post stroke or central pain, neuropathic pain and others. The workshop provides education and practical tools to help individuals develop selfmanagment skills, giving confidence and motivation to better manage symptoms and day-to-day living with chronic pain. Non members must register with Living Well at Tuesday 1:30-4:00PM Sep Nov. 1 Living Well Diabetes Self-Management Program Members: Free (Register at the YMCA) Non-Members: Free (Must register with Living Well) This workshop provides education and teaches practical skills to help individuals develop self-management skills, giving them the confidence and motivation to better manage symptoms and day-to-day living with diabetes. Self-management refers to the skills used to manage the day-to-day tasks of living with one or more chronic conditions, such as chronic pain, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, among others.
