Kaujigattsak Northern Lights Ilinniavingani NittugalikAngiggana Northern Lights Academy Newsletter Home of the Eagles May 2016 Mai 2016 Parents/Guardians; This edition of our school newspaper is the last for this academic year. We trust that you have enjoyed reading about the events at NLA as much as we enjoyed sharing them with you.
Greetings from the Elementary Classroom! It has been a very interesting year classroom! We said good bye to Mr. Cox and welcomed Mr. Poole to our homeroom! We now have to say good bye to Mr. Poole! We hope you enjoyed your brief visit here with us and wish you the best of luck for the future! Students in Grades 4,5 and 6 were excited to be a part of the Wonderbolt Circus again! Their excitement came from learning new skills, building on old skills, and finally, being a part of the Circus show held at NLA on the last evening of Bennie and Ruth's visit. Most students took pride being able to walk on stilts and learning how to juggle scarves. One student has even expressed interest in becoming a professional performer after having participated in the show. Students are glad that props have been left at the school to continue practicing with their circus talents! The Grade 4-6 class would like to thank Wonderbolt Circus, Bennie and Ruth for their time at NLA, and thanks to everyone who came to watch them perform. We are now looking forward to the end of this year's school year and to the upcoming summer vacation. We wish everyone a very safe and happy summer!
Perfect Attendance The following students had perfect attendance for the month of April: Clear-Brook Shane Ryan Jennifer The Wildly Wonderful Wonderbolt Circus Article by: Robyn Andersen, Eldred Andersen, Zoe Shiwak, Nathan Jacque and Shania Williams. Beni Malone and Ruth Lawrence came here in January for a week and talked about making a show and also left some stuff here to practice with. They demonstrated circus skills such as juggling, unicycle, devil sticks, spinning plates, and diablo.
They came back in April and brought stilts, free standing stilts, contact juggling balls, and a rola bola. Students practiced skills of their choice for a show that took place that Thursday night. When asked about the experience, Zoe Shiwak said, I loved the costumes! Ruth and Beni brought a giant bag of costumes that included poofy tutus, hats, wigs, dresses, shirts, and lots more. They then donated the costumes to the NLA drama group. When Shania Williams was asked about the skills she did she said, I did the rola bola, contact juggling, juggling, spinning plates, and free standing stilts. When asked if she would continue to practice these skills she replied, I guess. We asked Nathan Jacque how he found the circus he said, It was pretty cool, even though I wasn t very good. We then asked Eldred Andersen how he found the experience he replied, I enjoyed the stilts, the unicycle, I m still trying to get the hang of it. We then asked Robyn Andersen what she thought of the circus she said, It
was pretty cool and I loved walking on the stilts, it made me feel really tall. It was good for people to finally look up to me. Overall, the Wonderbolt Circus was an amazing experience. One of the best parts was when Beni juggled fire, even though he dropped it a couple times. I think we can speak for all the students in Northern Lights Academy when we say thank-you Beni and Ruth Grade 8 Heritage Fair Nathan Jacque and Robyn Andersen represented Northern Lights Academy at the 2016 Heritage Fair in Happy Valley Goose Bay on April 19 th and 20 th. Nathan s project, Traditional Fruit: The Redberry, won Best Representation of Labrador Culture.
Robyn s project, The Sealskin Boot, won Best Representation of a Tradition Based on an Individual. Congratulations Nathan and Robyn! 13 th Annual Inuktitut Speak Off The 13 annual Inuktitut Speak Off was held in Rigolet on Monday May 2 nd. 7 awarded first prize followed by Caroline Nochasak also of Nain. Our own Shania Williams won third!
