Welcome To the 2017 edition of the Autumn Review Magazine Editorial Office News Progeny Show Results Show Champions...18 Regional News Sale Top Prices ,000 Sale List Advertising S & D Abberley...BC Harrison & Hetherington...IFC Hawes Auction Mart...IFC Hutchinson Photography...9 Hutchinson W M & Sons...9 Marston N...BC Seed M...IFC Chairman s Message Let Your Selection, Make Your Success As I write this, we are all waiting for an Indian Summer, but let s be real, an awful lot of us are still waiting for a Summer. Autumn sales are now completed, and we have a new breed record of 37,000 set at the Hawes sale at the end of September. There has been demand again for top bloodlines with several joint purchases. I hope they all go on to do well for the new owners. Jim German This was all preceded by a very busy season of NSA events, progeny shows and many local shows. A little manic at times and several thousand miles racked up by Helen with the display stand. Our network of motorways make it easier to get to events and BFL meetings etc, but roadworks, accidents and peak time travellers inevitably can make journeys long and tiring. Some members will have made their first purchase, but for the majority selling and buying is in their blood, with the next generation keen to contribute in all aspects of the sheep cycle. Whether it s traditional or crossing type, it s important to continually improve through careful selection at purchase and also at mating. I wish I had a pound for every time I ve heard the phrase this is the one. It s up to you to be aware of mouths and general conformation. Association inspectors at the sales see sheep with faults, sometimes there are a few disputed decisions, but on the whole are a necessary process to help the purchaser, and maintain that quality sheep are presented for sale and this point is reiterated by the auction marts too. Congratulations to everyone at sales and shows, whether you are a prize winner or not, there is a very high level of stockmanship from local shows to the big ones, and these are the showcase for your animals and hopefully prospective buyers. Some sales have increased in number and some have dropped a little, larger ones draw lots of buyers and attract good prices for quality sheep. Any member can be involved in the Association, so come along to your area meetings in November and May, as it s your opportunity to put forward suggestions, recommendations and ideas. Bring a fellow member or friend along with you and who knows your journey may start as mine did in 1972 with the purchase of a gimmer lamb. Now, many people met and regional meetings attended my time as a member is at a peak. It is a great honour to be elected National Chairman and I will do my best for the breed and the membership. This past two years we have seen numbers grow with over one hundred new members signing up, so hopefully I will get to meet some of you on my travels. My term of office started at the end of June, so progeny shows and the Great Yorkshire were my first outings. All have been well attended with allocations quickly filled especially at the Royal Highland and the Royal Welsh. Front Cover - K20 Midlock - 37,000, a new breed record Currently it is mid October and the UK is in negotiations over Brexit, and it will be some time before we have any details on policy or payments in agriculture. The media is obsessed with trying to be one step ahead of any negotiations or announcements thriving on negative views. On behalf of myself and the membership I sincerely thank Helen and Rachael for running the office and doing the show stands etc so brilliantly. There is a good number of members who give up time and go the extra mile helping, so thank you to those members. Whether it is a sale or a meeting, it is nice to chat to new faces as well as the old ones. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas. It s soon the new year with new challenges and hopefully a successful lambing time. If you would like any regional events advertised on the office news page, or any photographs from local shows and events, please through the details to info@blueleicester.co.uk NSA Events 2017 It has been an extremely busy year promoting the breed around the British Isles again this year, with thousands of miles on the clock, with display stands at all the NSA events. NSA Wales was held in the heart of the Brecon Beacons on the wettest day imaginable, followed by a visit to the Highlands of Scotland with the weather on it s best behaviour for a change. This was followed by North Sheep, NSA Sheep South West and the final NSA event of the year was the NSA Northern Ireland event held at Ballymena Mart on the 3rd July. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who has helped with these one day specialist events again this year, providing sheep for the stands and helping out with building of the stands. Your help is invaluable. Shows 2017 The Association were in attendance with their display stands at The Balmoral Show, The Royal Highland Show, The Great Yorkshire Show and The Royal Welsh Show. All the shows provided excellent classes of Bluefaced Leicesters again this year. Many congratulations to all winners and champions, and to all exhibitors for turning out their sheep to such a high standard. Agri Expo was our final event of the year held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, and thanks must go to all members who provided sheep for stands at these events this year. Thank you on behalf of the Association to all judges who took the time to attend these important shows and events in the Association s calendar. Sales 2017 The female sales were held in January at Hawes and Carlisle. Champion and top price at Hawes was a gimmer shearling from the Booth family, Smearsett selling at 10,200. At the Carlisle sale, for the first time, the judging was split into crossing type and traditional. Top price in that section was for another gimmer hogg this time from the Skeughdale flock of George Shields. In the traditional classes, the champion was awarded to a gimmer shearling from Dewi Williams, Elian flock. The top price was 900 gns, and this was paid by Stuart Nelson, Medwyn for a homebred ewe from the Espley flock of Mick and Nicky Gray. 4

Arthur Yates Trophy Winner - Tudor Harris The numbers forward at this year s ram sales were up at some centres, with others seeing a slight drop in numbers. Top price for a crossing type shearling ram was from the Wight family, Midlock at Kelso selling for 12,000. Top price for crossing type ram lambs brought with it a new breed record again from the Wight family at Hawes selling for 37,000. Congratulations to the Wights on a new breed record. Top price for a traditional shearling ram this year was at Kelso from M Drummond, Cassington selling for 7,000. Top price traditional ram lamb was at the NSA Wales & Border ram sales from Mick & Nicky Gray selling for 9,500 gns. Thank you on behalf of the Association to all our sponsors for their invaluable support at this year s sales. 6 Penrith Progeny Show Article and photos by Wayne Hutchinson Champion Progeny Group (Traditional) The rain poured and everyone got a proper drenching, but the spirits definitely weren t dampened at Penrith Show. There was a great show of sheep in all sections of the progeny classes, as well as the open classes, with a big crowd watching on, especially around the Mule classes. But then again, let s face it.what else was there going to be done at home? In the traditional section, it was a great day out for Scott and Clare Thomason, whatever the weather was doing. Following on from their success at the Great Yorkshire, Nicky Robinson, the judge, ensured that their day was another one to remember, taking both the Champion and Reserve in the classes and then winning the Progeny championship too, then seeing the breed champion scooping the interbreed title too. The champion was a tup lamb by the H4 Auchry bought out of Builth Wells two years ago, who also stood first in his class at Penrith, and was also the sire to the three tup lambs from the Piel View progeny winning team too. This smart lamb is out of one of the flock s best Myfyrian F9 ewes. His reserve was a three crop ewe by the same good getting Myfyrian tup, which won her class at the Great Yorkshire last year. Runners up in the progeny class came from the Espley flock, with three unshown gimmers by their Ashes F2 tup which they bought out of Carlisle for 8500 gns a few years back and has done exceptionally well within the flock, passing on its impressive conformation and style to the Espley sheep. The crossing lines certainly generated a lot of interest in the pouring rain. The champion, sorted out by the judge James Herdman, was the powerful Highberries Highlander, last seen wowing the crowds at North Champion (Traditional) & Inter. Champion Reserve (Traditional) 6

Champion Progeny Group (Crossing) Sheep in June. He is a tup with some presence, by the C24 Hewgill and out of the full sister to Robin Booth s D15 Smearsett, by Z4 Hundith, which has been doing so well for them. Highlander, jointly owned with Martyn Archer, also took the progeny championship with three tup lambs. One of his Mules was part of Neil s pair which won the hotly contested Mule pairs too. The reserve champion in the open classes was a smart, stylish gimmer lamb from M/s Pedley, Yore House. This smart lamb is by H2 Drimsynie, who was also the sire to the second prize tup lambs in the progeny classes, and out of a ewe by B2 Duhonw which has done well for the Yore House flock. She is the full sister to the first prize gimmer shearling at the show, which also did well at shows last summer, winning the interbreed at Moorcock in North Yorkshire. The reserve progeny group went to the Stenton family with three gimmer lambs by the J37 Midlock, a son of the 23,000 Carry House bought out of Kelso as a tup lamb. He has done really well for the flock, putting a great stamp on his progeny and good clean whites in the Mules. In the Mule section Paul Brown, Oak House was proudly lifting the championship in this fiercely contested section with a gimmer lamb out of a Swaledale ewe. This lamb was by a Highberries tup, going back again to the C24 Hewgill. The progeny section was won by Martyn Archer with three stunning lambs by the homebred J2 Carry House he shares with the Riddings flock, which was out of another ewe by the legendry Z4 Hundith, who seems to be behind all the best breeding within the breed these days. At about the same time its full brother, the J1 Carry House, which was champion at Hawes last year, was winning the progeny show over the water in Co. 20 North East The season started with the Great Yorkshire Show. The black clouds overhead providing persistent rain, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the judge making his decisions, in the mixed classes of both traditional and crossing sheep. He made the Ward sisters of Glaisdale Overall Champion with a ewe, and S Thomason, Piel View flock from Walney Island Reserve Champion. Hexham provided the first registered sale of the year, and a good ring of buyers were present and a sharp trade was obtained. The Champion shearling came from the T L Forster & Son, Lowes Fell at 1400, and the Reserve Champion and Champion ram lamb came from the Burndale flock which made 350. Hawes ram sale, is always a long day, but no shortage of top prices made sure that it was thoroughly entertaining. Judges Neil Marston and Peter Lee had more than plenty of sheep pulled out to judge. The Riddings flock took the championship and sold for 5,500, and the Carry House flock took the reserve championship which later made 9,000. Riddings third place ram made 23,000, the Smearsett family made 24,000 with their fourth prize, and the Carry House flock s fifth place ram made 12,000. Top price of the day and new breed record went to the Midlock flock at 37,000. Other notable prices were Harkerside - 24,000; Steel - 20,000 and the last in the ring Dunhow - 20,000 after 1 am! All these high prices and 30 sheep fewer brought forward than last year resulted in the average up on last year by 125. The shearling tup s average was up by 231 with a top of 3,000, and ewes were up to 1,500 which were up 110 on the year before. The auction mart webpage full results are here: To note that Raymond Lund, the auctioneer, was asked what time we would be finishing this year and he said 12 midnight. When it didn t finish until after 1 am, the reason he gave was that it was such a good trade that it took longer to sell them. So thank you to the auctioneers for doing such a good job at this [and the Hexham sale], and a thank you from all the vendors for those buyers and supporters who supported until the last sheep had exited the ring at 1.15 am. An associated event at Riddings Farm, Reeth was held on behalf of NEMSA which attracted a good attendance from all over the UK and was a very successful event. Laurence Allison - Chairman North West This time of year again, and as I write this report, I am reflecting on what has been a difficult wet year we all have had. The show season for the North West kicked off with Penrith Agricultural Show with our progeny show being held there in July. Despite the very wet start to the day, all sections were very well supported, and a quality selection of sheep were put forward for the judges, James Herdman and Nicky Robinson. The crossing type Leicester champion came from Neil Marston and Martyn Archer with their shared aged ram (Highberries Highlander). Reserve champion went to J C & E Pedley & Sons (Yore House) with a ewe lamb by H2 Drimsynie. The champion progeny group was also won by Neil Marston with three tup lambs sired by Highberries Highlander. The reserve champion crossing type went to James Stenton and family with three gimmer lambs by J37 Midlock. The traditional champion and reserve came from Piel View, and the champion tup lamb also took the interbreed championship. The reserve champion was a three crop ewe. Traditional progeny group was also won by Pielview with three tup lambs sired by H4 Auchry, with the reserve group going to the Espley flock with three gimmer shearlings sired by F2 Ashes. In the Mule section, the day s champion came from Paul Brown, Oak House with a gimmer lamb out of a Swaledale ewe, sired by a Highberries tup. The Mule progeny section was won by Martyn Archer with three gimmer lambs by J2 Carry House. I would like to thank Helen and Rachael, all the stewards, judges and all the exhibitors for soldiering on throughout the day. Thanks must also go to Penrith Show committee for dealing with the day s weather conditions and letting the show go ahead. There was a Bluefaced Leiecester Inspector Training day, which was held to endeavour to make the inspectors decisions more consistent in line with the council s new recommendations. Next came the sales. Penrith s sale champion was awarded to M/s Lord (Hewgill) with a shearling ram, and they also had top price of Carlisle sale crossing type champion came from Michael James and 20

family with a ram lamb, K4 Duhonw. Top price went to John and Mandy Smith-Jackson with K8 Shafthill. Traditional champion came from Frank Johnson with K1 Ashes, with the top price going to the Roberts family with K8 Myfyrian making The start of November saw our social night and prize giving being held in Ballymena Rugby Club which proved a great success. Also we had the flock competition results which was judged on the days prior to the social evening by Mr James Bell, Cottage. Early November the Association had the stand at the Agri-Expo. A busy day throughout, with quality sheep kindly provided for the stand by Jim German and Billy and Anne Little. This event seems to be growing each year and really is a great day to finish the season. Thanks going to Helen, Rachael, Susan, Billy and Anne for their continued work setting up and providing refreshments throughout the day. Finally I would like to thank all the North West members, Helen and Rachael and my trusted secretary, Jim for all their help and support over the last year. Merry Christmas and all the best for Scott Thomason - Chairman Northern Ireland As I sit and reflect on the past year with the Northern Ireland Bluefaced Leicester Region, and if I was asked to sum it up in one word, it would be successful. The year started off with the show season and our Balmoral Show. Mr Michael James was the judge and awarded John Blaney & Sons champion with a gimmer hogg and G & J Loughery reserve with a gimmer hogg. With the showing season well under way, July saw our progeny show which was held at Antrim Show. Judge Mr Ashley Caton awarded the champion of the show to a ewe lamb from G & J Loughery. Progeny champion went to Michelle Wright with her Parkgatestone ram and three ram lambs. William Adams won the Mule progeny with three Mule ewe lambs sired by his Carry House ram. Show cup winners - Eoin Loughran, John Blaney, Graham Loughery, Shannon O Kane and Kelly O Kane This was a great show of Mules and credit to Ashley for the difficult job. Young handlers were out in force and Rory O Kane came away as champion young handler. September saw our premier ram sale and this year we opted to have it for sheep eligible for export. This resulted in us having our best Bluefaced Leicester sale to date with averages well up on previous years. With ram lambs averaging , shearling rams averaging and females averaging Michelle Wright was awarded champion of the show which later went onto sell for 2800 gns, and Dominic McCrystal broke sale records and sold to a top of 15,000 gns which was bought by Michelle Wright. Armoy Sale was at the start of October with a more steady trade, and champion was awarded to Alastair Christie s ram lamb which sold for 1200 gns. William Adams, Holmview flock (right) receiving the Overall Flock Champion Cup from judge Jimmy Bell 21

As the dark nights are upon us, it just leaves me to wish everyone success in next year s lambing, and to thank Helen and Rachael from the Association office for all their help, as my job has been made easier knowing they at the end of the phone. Also to my Vice Chairman Eoin Loughran, I would like to thank him for all his help and advice in the past year as this was greatly appreciated. Hugh Henry - Chairman Scotland My season started with a trip up north to Highland Sheep on 31st May 2017 to Kinnahaird Farm, Strathpeffer, Ross-shire. Helen and I didn t have a particularly busy day on the stand. The sheep for the stand were supplied by Murial Ross from The Arr flock, and my thanks must go to Murial for helping organise the stand at this event. Jimmy Bell, judge NI flock competition with large flock winners Graham Loughery - ewes, William Adams - ewe lambs and Michelle wright - stock ram. The Royal Highland Show again attracted a large entry of sheep in both sections. Judging started at 9 am on the Friday morning with Mr Derek Hall judging the Crossing Type. Derek s champion male was a tup lamb from J Pirie, Blarnavaid flock, and reserve was an aged tup from J Pirie & A Campbell. Champion female was a ewe from M R Thornborrow, Dawyck flock, and a gimmer from the same home was reserve. This ewe went on to be overall champion and the tup lamb was reserve. In the Traditional section judged by Mr Andrew Hewson, the champion was an aged tup from A McClymont, Kirkstead, and the reserve ticket went to the tup lamb from the same home. Female champion went to a gimmer from M Turner, Kildalloig, and the reserve to a ewe from M & N Gray, Elspey. Overall champion went to the aged tup from A McClymont, and reserve to the gimmer from M Turner. A McClymont s aged tup was reserve interbreed champion on the Saturday, and on the Sunday M R Thornborrow s ewe and J Pirie & A Campbell s aged tup were overall interbreed pairs champions. The Bluefaced Leicester breed had a tremendous Highland Show, and my congratulations to all the exhibitors. The progeny show was at Turriff, and this was well attended by exhibitors. In the Traditional section, the championship was awarded to M Seed, Auchry with the pair of lambs shown with their sire, and reserve went to R Neill, Rossiebank with a pair of shearlings. In the crossing section, the championship was awarded to C Milne, Speymouth with three tup lambs, and the reserve ticket went to J Nisbet with a pair of gimmers. Rory O Kane winner of the Young Handlers Shield Jimmy s champion overall flock was awarded to the Holmview flock of William Adams, and I would like to thank all who entered the competition as a very high standard of sheep were presented for show. As you can see we have had a very successfull year and hope the success continues well into the future. The start of the sales was at Kelso, and the Champion crossing type was a tup lamb from the Dawyck flock which later sold for Champion traditional type was a shearling tup from M Drummond, Cassington which sold for Top price of the day was paid for J21 Midlock from the Wight Family. Trade was strong with buyers looking for powerful tups. The Leicesters had the top breed average from all of the breeds of sheep sold at Kelso. Castle Douglas sale saw the champion K32 Midlock tup lamb sell for 1000, and the reserve champion, a shearling, from R McKie,Finniness 22

sold for Top price was J7 Finniness, a shearling which realised The auctioneer had to work hard for his bids, and shearling averages fell by 130 on the year for the same number sold. I must congratulate Alan Wight & Sons, Midlock, who sold K20 Midlock, a tup lamb at Hawes for a new breed record of 37,000. This lamb was purchased by J Pirie, Blarnavaid and A Campbell, Drimsynie. I wish them well with their purchase. Events in 2018 Scottish AGM - 6th February 2018 NSA Scot Sheep - 30th May 2018 at Kings Arms Farm, Ballantrae, Ayrshire Royal Highland Show - 21st -24th June 2018 Scottish Progeny Show 4th August 2018 at Dumfries Agricultural Show I would like to finish my report in what has been one of the wettest summers / autumn by thanking the committee members and everyone else who has helped me throughout the year. Best wishes to all the members and their families for Kate Smith - Chairman South West I can t believe that it is that time of year again. The rams are in with the ewes and so the cycle continues. The club sale at Blackmoor Gate was particularly successful with many sheep on offer and some noteable prices. Congratulations go to Bryan Dallyn with his shearling ram which was Champion on the day, with Barry Nicholls shearling ram a worthy Reserve Champion. We have also had a strong demand for Mule ewe lambs in the South West this autumn. Trade was a pound or two up on the year, which was as expected considering the good fat lamb prices. Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and a successful, healthy year in Peter Heard - Chairman Wales The first event of the year for the region was a very wet Welsh Sheep which was held near Talybont on usk. The sheep on the stand were kindly supplied by Phil May and Richard Thomas, with one of Phil s hoggs winning best wool on hoof at the event. Next was the Royal Welsh Show where the classes were judged by Jack Lawson. Champion was won by myself with a ram lamb, with Michael James in reserve with a ewe lamb. That evening was our annual social which was once again well attended. In August was the Welsh region s progeny show held at Welshpool Livestock Market. An excellent entry of blues were forward, with the individual champion and reserve won by Elfyn Owen, Cernyw. In the progeny section, the Overall Champion was won by Tudor Harris, with three ram lambs shown with their sire, and reserve going to Elfyn Owen with a group of three yearling ewes. It was one of the driest springs/early summers we have had on record, and then it all went wrong with the wettest summer for a very long time. Autumn looks to be shaping up the same way, with the rams huddling by the hedges when they should be out working! We had a good day at the NSA Sheep South West event which was actually one of the hottest days of the year! Many thanks to those who brought sheep for the stand - Helen Havill for her traditional blues and Neil Cole for his crossing type. The summer show season has been a successful time for the breed, and it has been encouraging to see many new faces on the showing scene ready to try their hand in white coats. Stock has been turned out well, making for a healthy competition. The Association sale at Tavistock was also well attended, many thanks to our judge, Adam Garthwaite. We welcomed several new vendors this year who brought some good stock forward a variety of stock meaning something for all buyers. A small entry of Mules were forward, with the overall champion going to W Jones with a yearling ewe, and reserve to a ewe lamb from Myrfyn Roberts, Myfyrian. Builth Wells NSA ram sale was next, and Champion was a ram lamb from Michael and Nicky Gray, Espley which later went on to sell for the highest price on the show ground that day at Well done to them. Other congratulations must go to Michael James for gaining crossing Champion at Carlisle sale and selling for Also congratulations must go to Myrfyn Roberts and family for topping the blue section at Carlisle at So another year passes, with tups old and new now put out with ewes. We can all start looking forward to lambing and doing it all over again next year. Stephen Abberley - Chairman 23
