1 Leyburn Livestock Auction Mart Company Ltd Directors and staff take this opportunity to thank our customers who supported the Mart during 2015 and look forward to continuing business with them in Leyburn Mart conduct sales on Wednesday s and Friday s each week to offer the full range of buying and selling options for prime, store and breeding cattle and sheep. Located in the traditional North Yorkshire Market town of Leyburn where it has operated for nearly one hundred years the Mart is ideally placed to bring together buyers and sellers for all classes of stock. These customers arrive in large numbers from the surrounding Dales as well as all parts of North, East and West Yorkshire; County Durham; Cumbria while some of the special sales attract clients from the north of Scotland to Devon. A good road network allows easy access to the town for anyone travelling from the east via the ever improving A1 and the M6 for those travelling from the west. This private limited company is run for the shareholders by a board of ten farmer directors with Stephen Walker as Market Manager and Auctioneer. The board is headed by Philip Terry as Chairman with Bob Dixon as Vice Chairman. Stephen Walker also acts as principal auctioneer with full support from assistant auctioneer William Bramham and junior auctioneer Jimmy Fawcett. Company Secretary Rachael Simpson heads the office team and Jimmy Wilkinson is Yard Foreman. Mr Wilkinson is also heavily involved with the organisation of the Spring Spectacular as well carrying out some part time field work. First class canteen facilities run by the Sunter Family are available on all sale days. They can be contacted on for other outside catering work. 2 Sales take place every Friday (Store and Breeding Stock) and every Wednesday (Prime Stock) with additional seasonal breeding sales as advertised The Regular Sales pattern comprises: IN THE DAIRY RING Rearing Calves and Stirks each Friday commencing at 11.00am. This section continues to increase its throughput and is now firmly established as one of the premier sales for calf numbers, quality and price in the country. There are monthly awards for the top priced beef bred bull and heifer calves and dairy bull calves sponsored by Genus Ltd. These weekly calf sales incorporate four prize shows which are held each year at Christmas; The May Fair; a special for British Blue s in February and the recently introduced Late Summer Calf Show in memory of Peter Metcalfe who worked at the Mart for fifty years. Dovetailing with the calf section are Monthly Dairy Sales with Carrs Billington Agriculture offering a voucher for the top priced cow or heifer each sale. These sales are usually held on the first Friday each month (except New Year). The cattle are all locally farmed commercial & pedigree stock and include a high proportion of genuine full or part dispersals. Shows for Dairy Cattle take place in November and Mid Summer with 2016 seeing the introduction of a special spring show in memory of Billy Atkinson, Mart Director, dairy farmer and staunch supporter of the mart, who died during The Mart is pleased to hold Special Shows and Sales for the North Eastern Holstein Club in conjunction with these monthly sales. IN THE STORE RING Fortnightly Store Cattle sales of between 50 and 450 steers, heifers and feeding bulls on Fridays at am. From October to May, shows are held along with these sales when the pride of Dales three quarter Continental cattle are on offer. Many cattle from these regular sales go on to win major prizes at primestock and other shows. On Saturday 12 th March the annual Spring Spectacular for Show Potential Cattle will be held when 50/60 superior halter trained steers and heifers are

3 shown and sold to a wide audience of the keenest cattle men, women, boys and girls in the country s sale produced an entry of 51 cattle and a top price of 4,200 keeping Leyburn at the forefront for these type of shows and sales nationally. Beef Breeding Cattle sales are held in conjunction with the store cattle sales with a Christmas show and sale in December. Store lamb sales are held on Friday s usually on a fortnightly basis from July to February when lambs are forward. These sales are made up of predominately Texel lambs with other Continental breeds, Suffolk, Mule, Masham, Swaledale and Dalesbred also on offer. Special seasonal breeding sheep sales take place during the busy September/October time when a full range of Mule and Swaledale sheep are on offer together with Teeswater, Charollais and Texel breeds. On Friday 15 th January the popular In Lamb sale is held creating interest at this mid winter period. Junior Store Cattle & Rearing Calf Competition saw the introduction of a competition for young people to purchase a store steer, heifer or Rearing Calf through Leyburn Auction Marts regular autumn sales. The animal is then to be shown and sold at Leyburn Mart s fortnightly store cattle sale during the Easter School Holidays Prizes will be awarded for best animal; animal with the best daily liveweight gain and animal with the best gross margin. All prospective competitors must first register with the mart office. Terms and conditions for this competition are available. Every Wednesday under the Six Day Rule 20 / 40 Prime cattle, cast cows and cast bulls start at 10.00am followed by Prime lambs & hoggets and cast sheep. **************************************** A collection for Deadweight Lambs operates on a Wednesday or Thursday and is available all year round but predominately during September to March. ************************************************* Farm Stock and Machinery sales are conducted on farm or at the Mart.
