Aaron Fitt of Baseball America named Rodon his Midseason Freshman of the Year, doubling down on his selection of Carlos for Preseason Freshman of the Year. No question at this point, NC State LHP Carlos Rodon is my top freshman pitcher so far this season. Rodon is a man among boys in most cases and will be one of the top picks in the 2014 MLB draft for sure. Absolute stud. - Kendall Rogers (PerfectGame.org) on April 30, 2012 Drop the Tzammer Anthony Tzamtzis mowed down a career-high nine Blue Devils over 7 2/3 innings to out-duel Duke ace Marcus Stroman on April 27. Tzamtzis claimed ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts. In 48.2 innings pitched, Tzamtzis has allowed just seven extra-base hits. He ranks second in the ACC in opponent s batting average (.177), and seventh in ERA (2.77). Tzamtzis has only given up four earned over his last 25 1/3 innings. Turner and Rodon to Suit Up for Team USA Trea Turner and Carlos Rodon accepted invitations to play for USA Baseball s Collegiate National Team on Wednesday, May 2. The freshmen represent the first Wolfpackers to don the stars and stripes since Eric Surkamp in Team USA s schedule includes trips to Cuba, The Netherlands, and 10 games in the state of North Carolina. Youth Movement NC State has started three or more true freshmen in 44 of 46 games this season. The Pack holds a 9-2 record when starting five freshmen, 26-7 when starting four or more. Swiper, No Swiping! Freshman Trea Turner enters the weekend 45-for-47 on stolen base attempts this season to lead the nation by six. The Pack is 79-for-95 as a team (24th in the nation at 1.71 per game). Let s Get Small Elliott Avent has done a tremendous job reshaping the Pack around a small-ball philosophy. The graphic at right shows how State stacks up nationally (ACC ranks based on averages): Buenos Diaz Since moving permanently to the number two spot on April 15, shortstop Chris Diaz is batting a scorching.509 (27-for-53). In the 13 games since, the junior has driven in 14 RBIs, scored 17 times, and smashed 12 extra-base hits.»» For the season, Diaz ranks fifth nationally in doubles per game (21 in 46 games), third in the ACC in batting average (.388), and leads the conference in hits (73). State sits 11-2 since moving Diaz back to the second spot in the order. 2 PACK NOTES Wolfpack Prowling the National Rankings The standings mark the highest for State since 2008, which saw the Wolfpack ranked as highly as 15th in both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, and 20th in the coaches poll. The Pack ranks 13th in the NCAA s RPI released on May 8. RANKINGS RECAP Date Baseball Collegiate Coaches America Baseball Poll Preseason NR NR NR Feb. 20 NR NR NR Feb. 27 NR NR NR March 5 NR NR NR March March March April April April April April May State s No. 9 ranking in Collegiate Baseball represented the best single ranking for Wolfpack baseball since 2003 when the Pack made it to third. Avent Reaches Milestones, Sets Records NC State head coach Elliott Avent won his 200th ACC game on Friday of the Wolfpack s three-game sweep against No. 24 Wake Forest. Avent becomes the sixth active coach in the ACC to have 200 or more conference wins. Just over two weeks after his 200th ACC win, Avent picked up career win No. 800 in a dramatic 7-6 Sunday victory over Virginia. Avent sits at over his 24- year career, and needs 10 wins to reach 600 at NC State ( ). The 2012 Wolfpack s 20-7 start marked the fastest NC State team to reach 20 wins since 2006 (20-4). By amassing a record, this year s team is the quickest to 30 wins since 2006 (30-10). On April 29, the Pack became the fastest in school history to reach 16 conference wins (16-8). New Bats No Problem NC State s taken the new regulations on bat technology in stride, scoring 331 runs over the first 46 games (7.2 per game). The Wolfpack has 10 home runs in its 11 seven games, representing over a third of the 26 homers State has on the year. Trea Turner posted a career-high 5-for-5 outing in the second game of the Wolfpack s Saturday doubleheader with Boston College, scoring three times and driving in a pair. Diaz matched season-highs for RBIs and hits with a 4-for-6 outing in the same game, driving in four runs and scoring three times. Diaz set his career-high with a 5-for-5 game Saturday against Duke, smashing a pair of doubles and driving in one. On Sunday, April 29 against Duke, Danny Canela became the first Pack batter since Matt Bergquist on April 30, 2011 to hit two homers in a game. Canela blasted two solo homeruns, his fourth and fifth of the season, to record the second multi-homer game of his career (May 9, 2010 vs. Towson). Survey Says... College Baseball Insider sent out a preseason survey to ACC coaching staffs to gauge feelings about some of the league s best talents. Chris Overman tied Wake Forest s Tim Cooney and Miami s Eric Whaley as the league s most underrated pitcher. Chris Diaz earned the distinction of being the league s best defensive infielder, while tying UNC s Chris Moran for best infield arm. Brett Williams tied for the best outfield arm with Georgia Tech s Brandon Thomas. Four Wolfpackers Capture ACC Weekly Honors Junior shortstop Chris Diaz earned the ACC s Player of the Week award on March 12 after keying the Wolfpack to a league series win over No. 10 Georgia Tech. Freshman third baseman Trea Turner followed him by claiming the award on April 16. Carlos Rodon joined the two with the ACC s Pitcher of the Week award on April 23. A week later, Anthony Tzamtzis made it three in a row by taking Pitcher of the Week on April 30. State s four weekly awards ties Clemson for the most of any team in the conference this season. Diaz went 6-for-13 with six RBIs, three doubles, and three runs on the weekend. The honor marks the first of Diaz s career, and the first for an NC State athlete since Drew Poulk on May 17, Turner tied an ACC single-game record with five stolen bases in a Friday night game at Clemson, the highlight of a four-game stretch in which he stole nine bases. Aside from his ferocious base running, Turner lifted the Pack with a two-out, two-rbi double in the seventh inning of the Pack s 3-1 win on Saturday. In State s midweek game against Elon, Turner came a home run away from hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, a double, a triple, and two stolen bases. Rodon (7-0) controlled game one of the Wolfpack s doubleheader against visiting Boston College, striking out 10 batters over eight shutout innings. His performance spanned a 40-minute rain delay in the sixth, as the game was halted with Rodon holding a 1-2 count on an Eagle batter. The freshman stayed warm during the delay and returned in style by registering a strikeout on his first pitch after the break, followed by another two innings of shut-out ball. Tzamtzis blew away a career-high nine Blue Devils over a career-long 7 2/3 innings in only his fifth start of the year, holding Duke to two hits and outdueling Blue Devil ace Marcus Stroman to propel the Pack to a 4-0 win on Friday. The redshirt sophomore from Miami, Fla., walked five batters in the shutout effort, but did not let a runner past second base on the evening. His nine batters fanned beat his previous career-best of eight, set in his first start of 2012 against Wright State. He Gone NC State pitchers utterly dominated during Baseball at the Beach weekend in Myrtle Beach, February Freshman Logan Jernigan left State s game against West Virginia with a no-hitter through five innings. Jernigan struck out nine and walked a single batter out of the 18 he faced. Jernigan ended up with the win, improving to 2-0 on the year. D.J. Thomas relieved him, giving up a pair of hits to spoil the no-no, but did strike out six more batters. Dillon Frye added one strikeout to make it 16 for the day. Carlos Rodon and Ethan Ogburn combined for 17 strikeouts in what turned out to be a losing effort against Coastal Carolina. Rodon breezed through four innings with 10 K s, striking out the side in the second, third, and fourth. Ogburn added seven, but an eighth inning throwing error cost the Wolfpack the ballgame. Including the 10 strikeouts tallied by Anthony Tzamtzis, Ryan Wilkins, and Chris Overman during those games NC State managed 43 K s over 26 innings of work. On the following Tuesday against Campbell, State added to that total with nine more from Vance Williams, Danny Healey, and Overman, to improve to 52 K s over a 35-inning stretch. 3 PACK NOTES Super Scholar Vance Williams received the Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award, recognizing his outstanding academic and athletic performance although he intends to compete at the professional level. Williams received recognition as CoSIDA Academic All-District on May 7. Objects in Win Column are Closer Than They Appear Despite the 10-0 final, NC State and UNC Wilmington battled for seven and half innings before the Pack blew the game open. UNC Wilmington starter Tyler McSwain shut out NC State for seven innings, allowing only four hits. Carlos Rodon pitched the first five innings for the Wolfpack, scattering five hits, before Ethan Ogburn came in to throw four perfect innings in relief. Those three pitchers combined to go 15 innings, allowing no runs, nine hits, and striking out 11 while walking three before the Pack s 10-run eighth. Preseason Predictions The ACC Preseason Coaches Poll slotted the Wolfpack third in the Atlantic Division behind Clemson and Florida State, above Wake Forest, Maryland, and Boston College. Clemson received seven first place votes to Florida State s five. North Carolina was selected as the preseason favorite to win the ACC. Hall of Fame Inductees On February 16, NC State inducted four new members into its Baseball Hall of Fame: Frank Weedon: Weedon came to NC State in 1960 as the school s sports information director, and spent 50 years in the NC State Department of Athletics, as SID, and Associate Director of Athletics. In his time at NC State, he was one of the Wolfpack s most visible, colorful and respected personalities. His accomplishments were many and his devotion to NC State was boundless. As SID, Weedon was responsible for developing the Wolfpack Sports Network, the school s radio network for football and men s basketball games, the first of its kind in the region. He also was instrumental in garnering national honors for many NC State athletes, including eight Wolfpack football players who were named first-team All-America during the 1960s. Terry Harvey ( ): Harvey received a consensus Freshman All-American honor in 1992, and a third team All-American mention by Collegiate Baseball in He finished his career as NC State s career leader in wins (35), starts (60), innings pitched (425.1) and strikeouts (386). Harvey s crowning achievement came in 1993 when he became the first pitcher ever to no-hit Florida State. Jake Weber ( ): Weber earned two All-ACC first team and two All-ACC second team mentions during his four years at NC State. He holds the ACC record for consecutive games played with 248, and the NC State record for career at-bats, hits, triples, total bases and RBIs. Named Academic All-America by GTE/CoSIDA in 1996, 1997, and 1998, he ranks second in ACC history with 366 base hits and 288 runs scored. Tracy Woodson ( ): Woodson holds a share of NC State s single-season records for both home runs and slugging percentage (25 and.913 in 1984). His impressive senior season earned him an All-ACC first team mention, second team All-American honors from Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, and the ABCA, and a place in history as the 1984 ACC Player of the Year. Harvey, Weber, and Woodson were each members of the ACC s 50th Anniversary Team, named in Weedon, Woodson, Harvey, and Weber highlight the fourth class of inductees into the hall. The four men follow previous hall of famers: Coach Sam Esposito, Chris Cammack, Mike Caldwell, Steve Martin, Dan Plesac, Doug Strange, Tom Sergio, Turtle Zaun, and Brian Bark. Doak, Sweet Doak The Wolfpack holds a 24-4 record at home, including wins in 19 of its last 21, and a current 10-game winning streak (its longest since 2004). State has not dropped back-to-back home games this year, and 22 of the Pack s 26 home runs this season have come at Doak Field at Dail Park. Game Overman Chris Overman landed a spot on the National College Baseball Writers of America s Stopper of the Year award watch list, and an honorable mention on College Baseball Insider s Preseason All-America Team. The junior will be relied on this year as NC State s closer. Overman has a 3.16 ERA with five saves through 20 appearances this year, allowing 23 hits, 12 walks, and nine runs over 25 2/3 innings, striking out 32. He did not allow an earned run in his last eight appearances of the 2011 season, covering 12 2/3 innings, and added six innings to that streak in 2012 to make it 18 2/3, before finally giving up a run in game two against Georgia Tech. Overman has a pair of saves in his last three appearances, picking up number four and five in the Wolfpack s sweep of CSU Bakersfield. Game-Winning Innings NC State has been able to count on innings of four or more runs in 19 of the 46 games this season (41.3%). The Wolfpack used a 10-run stampede to blow past UNC Wilmington in the eighth inning of a scoreless game February 21. The Pack nearly batted around twice in the inning, scoring the last nine runs with two outs. NC State wasted no time against Youngstown State, lighting up the Penguins for eight runs in the second on its way to a 14-3 victory. State led 5-0 heading into the eighth inning against West Virginia before tattooing two Mountaineer pitchers for 11 insurance runs to make the final score The Pack had a five-run fifth inning against UNC Asheville to stretch a 3-0 lead into an 8-0 rout. An error-prone Davidson defense led to a six-run inning in the third to help State demolish its in-state rivals 11-0 on March 7. State bounced back from a 14-6 loss in the series-opener with Tech by leaping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of Saturday s 8-5 win. Andrew Ciencin s third homer of the season put a cap on NC State s five-run fourth in the 8-1 victory against Elon. A four-run sixth helped NC State run away from No. 24 Wake Forest in the series-opening game, 9-5. The Wolfpack utilized two six-run innings to crush Old Dominion 16-6 in a rain-shortened seven inning game on April 4. NC State put a seven-run inning in the seventh after scoring five in the fourth against Elon in a 14-2 thrashing. The Pack raced past Clemson on Sunday, April 15 with a four-run fifth to jump ahead 6-2 before finishing off the Tigers 6-3 State enjoyed innings of four or more in each of its three games against Boston College, scoring five to respond from an 8-7, sixth inning deficit in the deciding game. The Wolfpack scored four runs in the fifth to put away Charlotte 6-3. Facing a 7-3 deficit in Sunday s game against Duke, the Pack rallied furiously with a four-run sixth inning to tie the game, eventually putting the Blue Devils away 8-7 with Logan Ratledge s RBI double in the bottom eighth. State scored five runs in the fifth-inning of its Friday win over CSU Bakersfield, before unleashing a five-run seventh on Sunday to win the capper QUICK FACTS Location...Raleigh, N.C.
