(first start) NEW SEASON UCLA opens its 2011 campaign against San Francisco on Friday, Feb. 18. The Bruins enter the season ranked either No. 1, 2 or 3 in the five most prominent preseason college baseball polls. UCLA advanced to the finals of the College World Series last season for the first time in program history, posting a record. The Bruins established the school single-season wins record (51) and posted the program s highest-ever win total in regular-season action (43). The Bruins pitching staff posted a nation-leading 700 strikeouts. STARTING ROTATION UCLA enters its first weekend of the regular season with two seasoned veterans and one true freshman in the starting rotation. Junior right-hander Gerrit Cole is slated to start on Opening Night, after having gone 11-4 with a 3.37 ERA in Junior right-hander Trevor Bauer will take the mound for UCLA on Saturday, having registered a team-leading 12-3 record and 3.02 ERA last spring. Freshman right-hander Adam Plutko will make his collegiate debut on Sunday afternoon after having excelled at Glendora High School. UCLA IN SEASON OPENERS In head coach John Savage s six seasons at the helm of UCLA s program, the Bruins have posted a 5-1 record in their season opening game. One year ago, UCLA defeated Southern University, 15-1, in the first game of that weekend s third annual MLB Urban Invitational. The Bruins last dropped a season opener in 2006, falling to Fresno State at home, Over the last 10 seasons, UCLA has recorded a 6-4 record in season openers. SUPER SOPHS UCLA returns several sophomores who had illustrious freshman campaigns in 2010, becoming critical components to the team s success. Sophomores Beau Amaral (.354), Cody Keefer (.318), Cody Regis (.312) and Jeff Gelalich (.321) all batted above the.300 plateau. Amaral and Regis were each named All-Tournament Team selections at both the NCAA Los Angeles Regional (Jackie Robinson Stadium) and the College World Series. OUTFIELD STRENGTH The Bruins 2011 roster shows depth at numerous positions, though none quite as deep as the team s outfield spots. Senior Chris Giovinazzo and sophomores Cody Keefer, Beau Amaral and Jeff Gelalich are expected to earn the bulk of playing time in the outfield. Giovinazzo enters his senior campaign at UCLA having played in 122 career games, posting a.259 batting average. Amaral, Keefer and Gelalich each batted above.310 as freshmen in 2010 and started at least 20 games. AROUND THE HORN UCLA returns four significant starters around the infield this season, including junior catcher Steve Rodriguez. Juniors Tyler Rahmatulla (second base) and Dean Espy (third/first base) and sophomore Cody Regis (third base) each started at least 40 contests last season and are expected to shoulder a similar load in Espy and Regis tied for the team lead with nine home runs, while Espy posted a team-high 52 RBI in 63 games (40 starts). Rahmatulla batted.328 with a.434 on-base percentage, collecting seven homers and 45 RBI. ROAD WARRIORS UCLA went 22-7 in games played away from home one year ago, including the team s six games at the College World Series. The Bruins only road losses came at No. 17 Oregon State (April 9), No. 17 Arizona (April 25), UC Irvine (May 11) and No. 8 Cal State Fullerton (May 25). Now a sophomore, Beau Amaral emerged as the Bruins most difficult out on the road, leading UCLA with a.365 average and.474 on-base percentage (minimum 25 at-bats). The Bruins have at least 28 road/neutral site games scheduled in STRIKEOUT DUO Juniors Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer have packed a formidable 1-2 punch in UCLA s starting rotation the past two seasons. Bauer led the nation with 165 strikeouts last year, and Cole finished third in the nation with 153. Those totals rank first and second, respectively, in UCLA s single-season strikeout record list. Bauer and Cole enter the 2011 season tied for eighth place on UCLA s career strikeouts list with 257. Cole established UCLA s single-season freshman record in 2009, recording 104 strikeouts. He finished the 2010 season ranking 13th in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (11.2) and 15th, nationally, in hits allowed per nine innings (6.73). SINGLE-SEASON STRIKEOUTS 1. Each pitcher has earned first-team All-America acclaim from ESPN, Collegiate Baseball, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. In addition, Cole has secured first-team acclaim from Baseball America and Perfect Game USA. Bauer has earned second-team honors from Baseball America. Both pitchers were named All-America selections at the end of their sophomore campaigns. POWER OF THE PAC Seven Pac-10 Conference baseball programs have been ranked in at least one of the five prominent preseason college baseball polls. UCLA leads the way in each of those five polls, earning a No. 1 preseason selection from ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 2 slot from Baseball America and the NCBWA. Baseball America s poll features six Pac-10 programs, including Arizona State (11), Stanford (13), Oregon (14), California (17) and Arizona (19). Last season, a record eight Pac-10 teams advanced to NCAA Regionals. BULLPEN AT A GLANCE UCLA s bullpen returns four pitchers who saw action on the mound last season and welcomes a nucleus of four true freshmen. Sophomore right-hander Scott Griggs (8.0 innings) and junior left-hander Mitchell Beacom (17.2 innings) are expected to become essential contributors, with Griggs and freshman right-hander Zack Weiss potentially pushing for a spot as a midweek starter. Freshmen right-handers Nick Vander Tuig and Eric Jaffe are also expected to contribute from the bullpen this season. RAMMING SPEED Junior Tyler Rahmatulla returns as UCLA s starting second baseman, having started 61 of the team s first 62 games at that position in He batted.328 with seven home runs, 19 doubles, 45 RBI and 52 runs for the Bruins last spring. Rahmatulla belted among the most historic home runs in school history in Game 2 of last June s NCAA Los Angeles Super Regional. As UCLA trailed 6-5 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning (designated visitor), he belted a two-run homer to essentially save UCLA s season. Cal State Fullerton tied the game, 7-7, in the ninth before the Bruins added four runs in the 10th and held on for the win. STARTING AT SHORT Freshman Pat Valaika and junior Adrian Williams are expected to push for playing time at shortstop in Valaika was a three-year varsity letterwinner at Hart High School and has the ability to contribute from the start as a freshman. Williams has served as a vital utility infielder for UCLA the past two seasons, contributing at third base, shortstop and second base off the bench. A resident of Moreno Valley, Calif., Williams has batted.258 with a.343 on-base percentage in 32 career games (two starts). GAINS AND LOSSES Breaking down the statistics, UCLA returns position players which accounted for 64 percent of last season s 2362 at-bats (1513 return, 849 lost). The Bruins pitching staff welcomes back pitchers that totaled 46 percent of last season s innings (285.2 return, lost). ROSTER BREAKDOWN UCLA s 34-man roster features two seniors, nine juniors, 11 sophomores and 12 freshmen. Three of the team s players hail from a state other than California Chase Brewer and Dean Espy call Arizona home, and Pat Gallagher resides in Reno, Nev. The Bruins have 31 players from California on this season s roster.
