Rodriguez, 38 THE ZEPHYRS The Zephyrs continue an eight-game road trip with the third of a four-game set against the Iowa Cubs. The Z s have dropped five of nine meetings with Iowa this season, but have split six contests at Principal Park. The Zephyrs are 4-2 so far in a 16-game stretch against Omaha and Iowa, against whom they are 13-8 this season. They have won 10 of their last 14 against American North opponents and have gone against them on the road. YESTERDAY S NEWS Andrew Heaney was perfect through six innings, but in the seventh gave up two hits and two walks, the second of which came with the bases loaded to force in the game's only run in a 1-0 Cubs victory. Heaney needed just 54 pitches to rack up seven strikeouts through six innings before Matt Szczur led off the seventh with a single past second baseman Ed Lucas. Brett Jackson reached on a bunt that catcher Rob Brantly could not field cleanly, and Kris Bryant drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Heaney then walked Chris Valaika on a full-count pitch to bring in Szczur, before escaping further damage by inducing an inning-ending double play by Roberto Lopez. The Zephyrs stranded seven baserunners through the first seven innings, and had two runners in scoring position with two outs in the seventh when Jake Marisnick grounded out. Zach Rosscup and Blake Parker combined to retire the final six Z's batters to preserve the win for Dallas Beeler, who scattered six hits across seven frames. ON THE HILL Brad Penny makes his third start with the Zephyrs, coming off a win on Friday at Omaha when he gave up two runs and seven hits in 6.0 innings, with five strikeouts and a walk. Both runs came in the sixth inning, giving Penny back-to-back starts that opened with 5.0 scoreless frames. The Kansas City Royals released Penny during spring training, and he signed a minor league contract with the Marlins on June 18, making two starts at Class A Jupiter before joining New Orleans on July 13. GOOSE EGGS The Zephyrs were shut out for a PCL-leading ninth time this season. They were blanked 13 times last year, one shy of the franchise record established in The Z's are 6-9 in shutouts this year. They have now played six 1-0 games in Des Moines since the start of the 2011 season, going 1-5 in those contests, with their only win coming on April 18 when Brian Flynn outdueled Tsuyoshi Wada behind a leadoff home run by Josh Rodriguez. THE BOMB SQUAD The Zephyrs went homerless last night for just the second time in their last 16 games. They have also homered in 18 of their last 21, including seven multi-homer games in their last 12 contests. Their 66 home runs since June 1 are the most in the PCL, eight more than second-place Las Vegas, and their 116 blasts overall are 10 more than their total for the entire 2013 season. The Z's are on pace to hit 164 this year, which would shatter the single-season franchise record of 153 set by the 2012 club. SHAKE N JAKE Jake Marisnick, who already owns the team s longest hitting streak this season when he hit safely in 16 straight from May 19-June 5, extended his latest streak to 13 games with a third-inning single last night. Marisnick has at least one hit in every game since the Marlins optioned him to New Orleans on July 7, batting.390 (23x59) during what is the second-longest active streak in the PCL. His 23 hits since his return are tied for the most in the PCL, as are his five stolen bases. FLIRTING WITH PERFECTION Andrew Heaney is the first Zephyrs pitcher to throw six no-hit innings since Brad Hand entered the seventh inning without a hit allowed on August 14, 2012 against Sacramento. Hand exited that game with a no-hitter intact but had walked six batters and thrown 112 pitches. Hand also took a no-hitter into the eighth inning on May 29 of that season vs. Albuquerque but lost it when Tim Federowicz hit a one-out home run. GOING STREAKING Mark Canha has reached base in 30 consecutive games to tie Tacoma s Chris Taylor for the second-longest such streak in the PCL this season, seven behind Sacramento s Andy Parrino. Canha is batting.393 (44x112) during the streak with a league-leading.481 on-base percentage. Justin Bour s streak of consecutive road games having reached base ended last night at 23. NIGHT AND DAY The Zephyrs are in day games and are batting.242 (200x825), compared to a.274 average at night. Kyle Skipworth has started 14 times behind the plate in day games and has slugged five home runs, while Matt Angle is just 5x41 (.122) under the sun. NAWLINS NOTES The Z s fell to 24-5 when allowing two or fewer runs Rob Brantly has hit safely in four straight games, going 4x15 (.267) with two doubles and three runs scored NOLA snapped a streak of three straight games with at least one error last night but remain tied with Reno for the third-fewest errors in the PCL with 75 With a perfect eighth inning last night, Edgar Olmos has allowed just two runs in his last six appearances, going 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA (2 ER / 10.2 IP).

They would win 5-3 with the help of a three-run first inning and single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings.
