New Orleans fell in all four meetings at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark last week, and has gone vs. OKC since they became a Dodgers affiliate in Following a 4-1 start to the campaign, the Baby Cakes have dropped 10 of 12 contests. YESTERDAY S NEWS Zac Gallen pitched 7.0 scoreless innings as the Baby Cakes shut out Oklahoma City, 2-0. After Gallen stranded the bases loaded in the third inning, the right-hander induced a double play to work around a one-out double in the fourth inning, then would only allow one more baserunner the rest of the way, finishing with four hits surrendered and five strikeouts. The Cakes were held off the board until the fifth, when Magneuris Sierra reached on his second infield single and Cristhian Adames doubled. The Dodgers intentionally walked Jonathan Rodriguez to load the bases, but Eduardo Paredes threw four straight pitches out of the zone to Rafael Ortega to force in a run, and Chad Wallach followed with a sacrifice fly. Drew Rucinski overcame a leadoff single in the eighth, and Sean Burnett recorded two outs in the ninth before Jumbo Diaz then needed just one pitch to get Donovan Solano to pop out and earn his second save. ON THE HILL Sandy Alcantara makes his fourth start, still in search of his first Triple-A victory. He turned in his first quality start on Tuesday vs. Colorado Springs, when On This Date... he held the Sky Sox scoreless on two hits over the first 5.2 innings until a walk and back-to-back singles brought in a run to deal Alcntara a third straight no-decision. The right-hander has limited opponents to a.214 batting average, including a.111 mark (3x27) for right-handed hitters. In his two starts at home, Alcantara has allowed two runs with 13 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. 2000: Omar Ramirez goes 4-for-5 and scores the winning run on a passed ball in the 10th inning of a 2-1 win over Nashville. Van Slyke leads the club in batting average (.364), hits (16) and walks (11) and and is tied for the lead in doubles (3), home runs (2), RBI (8) and runs scored (10). 31 ALWAYS The Baby Cakes announced last Thursday they would be retiring jersey 31 in honor of Wally Pontiff, Jr., who wore the number as an All-American third baseman at LSU prior to his passing in The Pontiff Classic featuring LSU has been played at the Shrine on Airline in Pontiff s native Metairie annually since 2004 and has raised more than $1.5 million for charitable organizations. The ceremony, marking the first number to be retired in franchise history, will take place July 27 when the Baby Cakes host Tacoma. GALLANT EFFORT Zac Gallen became the first Cakes pitcher to work 7.0 innings in a game since Scott Copeland went 7.2 innings last August 17 vs. Round Rock. Gallen owns three of the four quality starts by Baby Cakes pitchers this season and has turned in quality starts in five of his last seven regular season outings dating back to last year. FOR STARTERS Baby Cakes starting pitchers have surrendered only three runs in 28.0 innings (0.96 ERA) during the homestand.
