FINISHING STRONG The Dirtbags won their final 10 series to finish the regular season, running away with the Big West Championship. Long Beach State won 20 conference games for the first time since 1998, winning LBSU s first Big West title since LBSU won the final two games of a three-game series at rivals Cal State Fullerton, improving to 5-1 against the Titans this year after sweeping a non-conference series at Blair Field in March. Sophomore Chris Rivera finished off both of LBSU s wins in Fullerton, working 2.0 innings of relief to earn the win on Friday, then shutting the door on Saturday s 1-0 win to pick up his 11th save of the campaign. All-BIG WEST HONORS A record 11 Dirtbags players, along with head coach Troy Buckley, were recognized on this year s All-Big West teams. Buckley was named the Big West Coach of the Year for the first time in his career, one of three major award wins for the Dirtbags. Junior RHP Darren McCaughan was named Big West Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season, after going 8-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 15 starts for the Beach. He had a pair of shutouts and four complete games on the year, striking out 94 batters in innings pitched. His battery mate, junior catcher David Banuelos, was named the Big West Defensive Player of the Year. A Dirtbag has now won this award two years running after SS Garrett Hampson received the honor in Banuelos threw out 17 of the 28 potential basestealers against him, allowing just a 39.3 percent success rate on stolen base tries. Joining McCaughan and Banuelos on the first team were 3B Ramsey Romano and RP Josh Advocate. LBSU had five players named Second Team All-Big West: 2B Jarren Duran, RF Brock Lundquist, LF Lucas Tancas, SP Dave Smith and closer Chris Rivera. Rounding out the list of Dirtbags were 1B Daniel Jackson and SS Laine Huffman as Honorable Mention selections. POSTSEASON PROFILE This is the 22nd postseason appearance for Long Beach State and second in as many seasons. LBSU went to the Coral Gables Regional in 2016, going 2-2 with both losses coming to host and regional winner Miami (FL). Long Beach State last hosted an NCAA Regional in 2008, welcoming in San Diego, California, and eventual national champion Fresno State. Senior Daniel Jackson will be playing in his third NCAA Regional for the Dirtbags, going back to his freshman year in 2014 when LBSU was the Gainesville Regional. He will become the first Dirtbags player to appear in three NCAA Regionals since Brandon Godfrey from BLAIR FIELD RENOVATIONS The ongoing improvements at Blair Field took a major step forward during the offseason with the construction of the Troy & Danyll Tulowitzki Batting Facility along the right field side of Blair Field. Also constructed during the offseason was the Jered Weaver Bullpen beyond the fence in right field. There was also an update to the Dirtbags locker room which includes new lockers, general maintenance and repairs and new designs and graphics on the interior walls to honor the history of Long Beach State Baseball. The renovation efforts began prior to last season with the installation of a new outfield fence. The old dimensions of were reduced to a slightly more hitter-friendly moving from left to right field. The result was an increase in home runs hit at Blair Field from four in 2015 to 23 last season. USA BASEBALL LBSU head coach Troy Buckley was announced as a pitching coach for the 2017 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer. This will be Coach Buckley s first 2 LongBeachState.com

10 LONG BEACH STATE DIRTBAGS GAME NOTES June 2-5 One of the most respected pitching coaches in the nation, Troy Buckley enters his seventh season as the head coach of Long Beach State in In his first six seasons, Buckley has led the Dirtbags to a winning record in every season and a pair of NCAA Regional appearances in 2014 and The Dirtbags enjoyed their most successful season in the Troy Buckley era in 2016, reaching a national ranking of No. 17 in the country. Long Beach State went 38-22, including a nine-game winning streak, to register the most wins in a season since 2008 and finish second in the Big West Conference. LBSU received an at-large postseason bid, and played in the Coral Gables Regional hosted by Miami (FL). The Dirtbags went 2-2, collecting two dominant wins over Florida Atlantic while suffering a pair of heartbreaking one-run losses to the host Hurricanes. Long Beach State had six players named first team All-Big West, the most for the program since the 1992 season. Darren McCaughan led the way as the Big West Pitcher of the Year, and SS Garrett Hampson was named Defensive Player of the Year. Other first team selections were C David Banuelos, 3B Zack Domingues, DH Luke Rasmussen and RHP Austin McGeorge. A pair of Dirtbags made the second team in 1B Daniel Jackson and LF Brock Lundquist. In 2014, Buckley s Dirtbags posted a overall record, earning an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. There they advanced to the regional final, beating North Carolina twice to reach the final game. Buckley s squad featured the Big West Freshman Player of the Year in Garrett Hampson and six All-Big West selections. Four Dirtbags from the 2014 squad were drafted with the entire weekend rotation going on to pitch professionally following their final college seasons. Taking the helm after two disappointing campaigns where the Dirtbags finished lower than fourth in the Big West for the first time since 1989, Buckley took command of a team that had lost its five top hitters and its strikeouts leader from the year before. Under Buckley s leadership, the squad lowered its team ERA by nearly a full point to 3.55 from 4.67, and he led the team to a finish against the nation s third-toughest schedule, just missing a berth in the NCAA Tournament. That improvement continued in 2012, as the Dirtbags again lowered their team ERA, this time from 3.55 to a Big West best Finishing above.500 for the second straight year under Buckley, the team was one game away from clinching the Big West championship, and finished with eight players receiving All-Big West honors, including senior Brennan Metzger, whose first-team All-Big West selection was the first for a Dirtbag since Buckley stepped up as the head coach for Long Beach State after he had made his return as the team s associate head coach for the 2010 season. That move was on the heels of spending two years as the Minor League Pitching Coordinator with the Pirates. In that position, Buckley oversaw the overall development of every arm in the Pirates farm system, and also worked in conjunction with the Major League ballclub over spring training development and through the season regarding player movement. Since Buckley came to Long Beach State in 2001, the Dirtbags have earned six Big West Pitcher of the Year awards, and in 2004, Jered Weaver was named the National Player of the Year after posting a 15-1 record with 213 strikeouts and a 1.62 ERA. Abe Alvarez, Jered Weaver, Jason Vargas, Cesar Ramos, Andrew Carpenter, Brian Shaw, Andrew Liebel, and Vance Worley were all drafted in the first three rounds of the MLB draft after developing their craft under Buckley, and all but Liebel have reached the Major Leagues. Buckley was also instrumental in the recruiting of fellow major leaguers Troy Tulowitzki and the 2008 American League Rookie of the Year, Evan Longoria. Most recently, Jake Thompson (2nd, 2009) and Andrew Gagnon (3rd, 2010) were selected in the top three rounds and are working through the minor leagues. After his first season at Long Beach State as an assistant coach, the Dirtbags never ranked lower than 28th nationally in team ERA, and ranked in the top five nationally three times. In 2002, the Dirtbags ranked fifth nationally with a 2.99 team ERA as Alvarez was named the Big West Pitcher of the Year, and the next year, Weaver joined Alvarez as co-pitchers of the year as Long Beach State reached the Super Regionals with a record. Weaver led the staff in 2004 to a 3.11 ERA, fourth-best in the country as the Dirtbags again reached the Super Regionals. Following the departure of Weaver, rather than suffering a decline, the Dirtbags posted a record ERA in 2005 under Buckley, leading the nation with a 2.53 mark, and posted a team ERA in 3.64 in 2006 and 3.59 in 2007, the latter being the 16th best in Division I. Buckley previously served three years at his alma mater, Santa Clara, as an assistant coach. From 1998 to 2000, Buckley was the Broncos hitting coach, pitching consultant and recruiting coordinator. Prior to his work with the Broncos, Buckley was a coach in the Montreal Expos organization from 1996 to In 1996, he served as the hitting and third base coach for AA Ottawa and in 1997 he was the pitching coach for the Gulf Coast League rookie league Expos in West Palm Beach, Fla. Buckley was a ninth-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in He spent three years in the Twins organization, including the 1991 season with AAA Portland.
