The Zephyrs are all-time against the River Cats, but at Raley Field, where they dropped three of four games during their last visit in The last time the Z s won a series at Raley Field was in 2005, when they took three of four. NOLA enters the series six games above.500 for the first time since they were on April 30, 2008, and within 1½ games of first-place Round Rock for the first time since April 17. YESTERDAY With the game tied at two in the eighth inning, the Zephyrs took advantage of a passed ball and a wild pitch by Fresno s Marc Kroon during the same at-bat, and went on to win, 5-2. Fresno scored first, taking advantage of two fielding errors by the Zephyrs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. NOLA tied the game in the fifth on a two-out, two-run homer by Joe Thurston. After grabbing the lead in the eighth, the Z s added an insurance run in the ninth on a pinch-hit RBI by Mike Cervenak, and Frank Mata finished off the Grizzlies to earn his second save. SERIES OVERVIEW By winning three of four games from the Grizzlies, the Z s won their first series at Chukchansi Park since a four-game sweep in The Zephyrs pitching staff allowed just nine earned runs in the series (2.31 ERA), including only three over the final three games, and earned their league-leading sixth shutout of the season on Friday night. New Orleans lowered its ERA for May to 3.78, second-best in the PCL behind Sacramento s 2.99 mark. WILD WILD WEST Zephyrs starter Sean West made his first start since April 8 th when he went on the disabled list with left shoulder tendonitis. He went three innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out two, and was lifted after throwing 60 pitches (42 strikes). THIRSTIN FOR THURSTON Joe Thurston had his 16 th multiple hit performance and his team-high fifth three-hit game yesterday as he went 3x3 with two RBI and a run scored. After a 10-game funk where he went 4x36 (.111), he has gone 10x24 (.416) with two home runs and four RBI over the last six games. HOW YOU SPELL RELIEF The Zephyrs bullpen had a strong performance over the weekend, yielding one run in 15.1 innings (0.59 ERA) while striking out 15. With 18 saves, the Z s lead the league by four, ahead of Iowa. NOLA picked up three holds, giving them 23 on the year, second-most in the PCL behind Tucson s 28. Victor Garate is tied for second in the league with five holds. The relief corps has an ERA of 2.44, more than three runs lower than the 5.45 ERA posted by the Zephyrs starting rotation. SMOOTH CRIMINALS Fresno stole four bases yesterday, giving the Grizzlies 10 in the series, the most allowed by the Z s in a series this season. Previously, Round Rock and Salt Lake had each swiped eight bags in a four-game set. The Z s are ranked fourth in the PCL by throwing out 21 of 69 base runners (.304), but Brad Davis has allowed a leaguehigh 38 stolen bases in 50 attempts (.240). IN A PINCH Mike Cervenak delivered his second pinch-hit RBI yesterday, and the Zephyrs second of the series, as Ruben Gotay also had a pinch-hit RBI on Friday. Z s pinch hitters are now batting.270 (13x48) with one home run and five RBI. ON THE BUMP Chris Sampson is making his New Orleans Zephyrs debut tonight on his 33 rd birthday. Sampson is making his first start since last year, when he started a rehab game for Double-A Corpus Christi and pitched one inning. His last start at the Triple-A level came on August 5, 2006, when he pitched for Round Rock. Sampson is taking the roster spot of catcher Gregg Glime, who was optioned to short-season Jamestown. ROSTER MOVES Infielder Ozzie Martinez was optioned to New Orleans from the Florida Marlins today. Martinez appeared in 10 games with the Marlins after joining the team on April 22, going 1x8 (.125). In 13 games with the Zephyrs, Martinez is hitting.190 (11x58) with one home run, two RBI and three runs scored. The Z s also activated Aaron Mathews from the disabled list, then released the outfielder. Mathews, who had been on the DL with a strained hamstring, was hitting.162 in 29 games, though he did lead the club with five pinch hits in 11 at-bats (.455). OHHH YEAHHHHH!!!! The Zephyrs are on a three-game winning streak since the unfortunate passing of wrestling legend Macho Man Randy Savage.
