Last night s victory snapped a three-game losing streak against the Express dating back to last season. NOLA was 10-6 against Round Rock in LAST NIGHT The Zephyrs shut out the Express 4-0 in last night s home opener. Josh Kroeger s blast in the second inning was all starter Tom Koehler and the Z s bullpen needed to take down the Express. The Z s added three more runs in the seventh off of a Bryan Petersen three-run homer to extend the lead 4-0. Jay Buente and Steve Chishek finished off the Express in three innings to secure the shutout victory. HOME SWEET HOME The Z s returned home to the Shrine on Airline to a raucous crowd of 10,768, the 10 th -largest home crowd in Zephyrs history. The last time the Zephyrs had 10,000-plus was on July 3, 2008, when they played Oklahoma City. The Zephyrs have beaten Round Rock in consecutive home openers. WINNING STREAK The Zephyrs extended their winning streak to six games after last night s victory over the Express, giving them their longest winning streak since July 12-21, The last time New Orleans won seven in a row was July 22-27, 2007, which began with a doubleheader sweep of Albuquerque. THE PRESSURE IS ON The four-run victory last night was the fist time the Zephyrs beat an opponent by more than two runs. The Z s are 4-0 in one-run games, leading the PCL. Last season, NOLA was only in one-run games. KINGS OF THE HILL The Zephyrs bullpen was once again flawless last night. Between Buente and Cishek, they allowed one hit in three innings. For the season, NOLA s relief corps has allowed just nine runs in 41.2 innings, good for a 1.94 ERA. The pitching staff ranks third in the PCL with a 2.89 team ERA, despite issuing the most walks in the league (46), but over the last five games, the staff has a 1.37 ERA, allowing seven runs in 46.0 innings. IN THE CLUTCH Petersen s home run was only the Zephyrs seventh hit in 56 at-bats this season with runners in scoring position (.125). Their overall team average sits at.174, last in the PCL. The Z s have stranded 66 base runners through the first nine games of the season (7.3 per game). SHOOTING BLANKS The Zephyrs completed their second shutout on this early season, becoming the first team in the PCL to record two shutouts. The Zephyrs had 10 shutout victories last season, and did not get their second shutout until a 3-0 win over Iowa on May 6. PUT IT ON THE BOARD, YES The Zephyrs have hit a home run in four consecutive games, including two last night. NOLA has hit seven home runs in four games. The seven home runs in the last five games ranks the Z s third in the PCL, tied with Salt Lake. WATER KOEHLER TALK The 24-year-old Tom Koehler has turned in consecutive quality starts to begin the 2011 campaign. With his two starts this season, he has a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings of work. In his last six starts dating back to last season, he has a 0.82 ERA (3 ER / 33.0 IP). Last night was Koehler s ninth consecutive victory when pitching in front of the hometown crowd, dating back to last season. Norton was named interim manager on June 23 when the Marlins promoted Edwin Rodriguez to replace the dismissed Fredi Gonzalez, and won his first game that night with an 8-4 victory over Oklahoma City. The interim tag was removed on July 16, and the Z s finished under his stead. NAWLINS NOTES New Orleans is a league-best 6-0 when leading after six innings; The Z s are 5-0 when leading through five frames, tied with Reno for the best mark in the PCL Bryan Petersen has reached base four times in six trips with runners in scoring position and two out: three walks, and last night s three-run homer.
