First, WKU leads not only C-USA, but also the nation in batters hit by pitches, resulting in 60 free bases for the Red and White. Additionally, Coach Tudor's squad has tallied 32 home runs so far in 2017, a mark that leads C-USA and ranks in the top 30 for total longballs across the country. WKU posted 28 home runs in all of the 2016 campaign, a mark this season's squad surpassed on March 19. Behind the plate, the Hilltoppers rank in the nation's top 10 for runners thrown out attempting to steal, racking up 16. 1,000 PROGRAM GAMES In the 18th season of the WKU Softball program, the squad hit a big milestone on March 18, as the program s 1,000th game was the first game the Hilltoppers played against Florida Atlantic. The program owns an all-time record of following the series against FAU. The team's inaugural coach, Leslie Phelan, was in attendance for the weekend series and threw out the game's first pitch. VICTORIES OVER SEC SQUADS Since 2000, WKU Softball has played 11 different SEC squads. The Hilltoppers have gone up against SEC opposition. Under Coach Tudor s reign, the squads have gone head to head with seven of the SEC programs, putting together a record of 5-8. In 2014 the Red and White took down No. 2 Tennessee on the Volunteers' home turf; Tudor s second game coaching for WKU against an SEC school. Over the 2017 opening weekend, WKU Softball headed to Starkville, Mississippi, and took down the host Bulldogs in a 1-0 decision. YOUNG AND HUNGRY Tudor s 2017 squad ranks as one of the youngest in the nation, featuring eight true freshmen and 10 players that have never played at the Division I level. WKU is tied for the seventh-youngest squad across Division I, with a roster that figures to be 69 percent underclassmen. The five upperclassmen of Kathryn Downing, Taylor Proctor, Brittany Vaughn, Jordan Mauch and Kelsey McGuffin are set to lead the Red and White. HANGING IN THERE Nine of the Red and White's 20 victories on the 2017 season have been come-from-behind wins. After 40 games, the largest deficit the Hilltoppers have overcame is a seven-run margin, down 1-8 to Northwestern State before claiming the 10-8 win with nine unanswered runs. The WKU squad also completed comebacks against Miami (OH) (6-2, 4.5), Western Illinois (0-1, 3.5), IUPUI (0-3, 2.5), Wright State (2-3, 2.5), Evansville (0-2, 2), Northwestern State (1-8, 4), Bowling Green (1-2, 3.5), Ohio (0-2, 5.5) and Samford (0-4, 3). Coming in in relief, Downing was in shut-down mode in the circle, allowing just three hits and one unearned run. WKU's bats produced a four-run fifth inning and followed with two more tallies in the top of the sixth frame to enter the final inning trailing 7-8. Leading off the seventh inning, Vaughn took a first-pitch ball before taking a pitch to the elbow that did not result in a free base. With the count at 2-0, Vaughn sent the next pitch she saw over the outfield fence to knot the game at 8-8. The fourth pitch of the inning hit Proctor, moving her to first base as the go-ahead run. Pitch number five of the inning was to Hayee Towers and left the park as the first home run of Towers' career and the decider in Hilltoppers' 10-8 come-from-behind victory. SEASON OPENERS For the fifth-straight season, WKU Softball has opened a new season with a victory following a 4-1 win over Stephen F. Austin at the Bulldog Kickoff Classic. Head coach Amy Tudor also picked up another season-opener win and has yet to be beaten as a head coach in those contests, improving to 13-0 in her career. WALK-OFF FASHION In the first home game of the season, the WKU squad picked up its first come-from-behind win in walk-off fashion. Down 4-6 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning against the reigning MAC champion, Miami (OH), the Red and White collected two quick two outs before Jordan Mauch sent a full-count double to the center field wall. Two pitches later, Taylor Proctor registered her first career home run and third and fourth RBI of the game when she sent a shot to left field. Haylee Towers followed with a single and proceeded to steal second base during Adarian Gray's at-bat. Gray ultimately claimed a five-pitch walk, which brought Tommi Stowers to the plate in a pinch-hitting situation. With the count at 2-2, the freshman sent a line drive just past the third baseman's glove that brought Towers around from second base for the winning run and 7-6 victory. WALK-OFF FASHION 2.0 Just seven days after taking down Miami (OH) with a seventh-inning walk-off hit from the bat of freshman Tommi Stowers, WKU Softball was at it again as Brittany Vaughn cranked the first pitch of her at-bat in the bottom of the fifth inning against Indiana State into center field, plating Towers from second base for the game-ending eight-run margin of victory. Both of the Hilltoppers' walk-off hits have come with two outs in the inning. A STREAK FOR THE (NCAA) RECORD BOOKS Freshman third baseman Adarian Gray hit a hot streak during the fifth week of the season. In WKU's 6-2 win over [RV] Ohio, Gray knocked a go-ahead grand slam to break the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning. Her very next at bat at Middle Tennessee on that Saturday she went yard again, that time for a two-run shot in the second inning. Gray's fourth-inning at-bat also resulted in a round-tripper for three-consecutive at-bats with home runs. That mark ranks as the third-most consecutive longballs in NCAA Softball history. HAVE A DAY, TOMMI STOWERS The first multi-hit game of freshman Tommi Stowers' career was one for the books. Stowers went 5-for-5 on the day to tie both the WKU Softball program and Conference USA single-game record set for WKU in 2003 by Renita Pennington. In the first inning, Stowers knocked the first pitch she saw back up the middle for a single to get things rolling. In the third inning, Stowers registered an RBI double and followed with a two-rbi double at her next at-bat in the fourth inning. In the sixth inning, Stowers produced a single through the left side before closing the day with a single again in the seventh inning. KENTUCKY PRODUCTS WKU Softball head coach Amy Tudor has committed to keeping in-state talent within the Kentucky lines, boasting a 16-person roster that includes seven student-athletes from the Blue Grass state. In addition to the three upperclassmen from Bowling Green, three freshmen and sophomore Kelsey McGuffin are playing in their home state. TOUGH COMPETITION AHEAD WKU Softball had the opportunity to see how it stacked up against some of the nation s best in 2017 as three of the Hilltoppers 2017 foes were ranked in the Preseason Top-25. Head coach Amy Tudor s squad had the chance to see how it stacked up against defending national champion, and preseason favorite, Oklahoma, in Norman back on March 4 and 5. Also in non-conference play, WKU was schedule to take on No. 20 Kentucky before the game was cancelled due to weather. Third, the Red and White hosted preseason No. 23 Florida Atlantic for a three-game series in mid-march. TUDOR S FIRST FOUR-YEAR PLAYER: KAT DOWNING WKU senior Downing is now the first player head coach Amy Tudor has coached for all four years of their career. Downing and Tudor have each been on The Hill four years now. The 2017 campaign is the 13th overall season Tudor has coached after stops at IPFW, Belmont and Ohio Wesleyan. With her two complete game shut-outs over opening weekend, Kat Downing brought her career complete game shut-out total up to four. Downing recorded two more complete-game shut outs at Middle Tennessee before throwing a two-hit complete-game shutout over Murray State to up her total to seventh. Downing has pitched 13 complete games in her career and has won all 13.
