Host: Mississippi State Venue: MSU Softball Field Tournament Preview For the first time in 12 years, Georgia State softball will open the season away from home. The Panthers start 2013 with the Bulldog Kickoff Classic in Starkville, Miss. on Feb The last time Georgia State was on the road to start the season came back in 2000 when the Panthers traveled to Columbia, S.C. and lost both sides of a doubleheader to South Carolina. Hosted by Mississippi State, the tournament pits the Panthers against Troy, Southern Illinois- Edwardsville, South Alabama, Tennessee State as well as the host Bulldogs. Both Mississippi State and South Alabama each received two votes in the NFCA preseason poll. All games will be played at the Mississippi State Softball Complex, which was renovated in 2012 and seats approximately 750 fans. Troy is Georgia State s most-common opponent among the tournament foes, having played 39 games against the Panthers over 28 years. The Trojans lead the series 30-9, but GSU won the most recent meeting with a 6-0 win at home during the 2007 season. Conversely, both SIU-E and South Alabama are entirely new opponents for GSU softball. Both Troy and South Alabama are members of the Sun Belt conference, which the Georgia State will join next season. The Jaguars enter the 2013 season as the defending Sun Belt champions. The Panthers hold a 3-2 record in five games played against Tennessee State. The Tigers won the last meeting 5-0 in The Panthers lone win against Mississippi State came in the most recent of the teams three meetings during GSU visited Starkville for the Mississippi State Tournament during the 1985 and 86 seasons, both times managing an even record of 2-2. During 1985, GSU s first year of NCAA softball, the Panthers earned wins over Tennessee Tech and West Georgia and lost to Ole Miss and MSU. In 1986, GSU beat St. Mary s and Arkansas St. before losing to MSU and Southern Miss. Last season, the Panthers opened the campaign with a 3-1 record at the GSU First Pitch Classic at Panthersville. GSU recorded threestraight wins over Longwood, ETSU and Western Carolina before losing to Longwood 11-7 in the tournament s championship game. In the 2013 CAA preseason coaches poll, GSU was picked to finish second. The Panthers tied with James Madison with 40 votes apiece, but did receive one first-place vote. The other seven went to Hofstra, who was unanimously favored to defend their 2012 conference title. Georgia State returns 15 letterwinners from the 2012 roster, which posted a record of for the second-best winning-percentage (.679) in program history. Head coach Roger Kincaid begins his third season in charge of the Panthers. 3 2013 Georgia State Softball 3 Noteworthy Many Great Returns The Panthers return 15 letterwinners from the 2012 roster. These returning players contributed 83% of the games started last season, 86% of runs scored, 92% of hits and home runs, and 94% of the RBI produced by the Panther offense. Conversely, GSU will have the task of replacing the three pitchers lost from last season. The Panthers only return 30% of innings pitched and 40% of strikeouts recorded in Senior Citizens Similar to last season, the Panthers will be lead by a strong senior class again this year. The five members of the class of 2013 are Audrey Mason, Brenna Morrissey, Paige Nowacki, Whitney Phillips and Carrie Williams. Between them, the seniors have made 537 starts for the Panthers over the course of 656 games played. Four of these outstanding student-athletes have played their entire fouryear careers at Georgia State. Morrissey transferred after a year at Assumption College in Massachusetts. Since then, she has started 95 games in 106 games played in three seasons. Nowacki Climbing Homer Charts Senior third baseman Paige Nowacki has established herself as one of the most prolific home run hitters in Panther softball history. With an even 20 long balls after three seasons, Nowacki now sits seventh on the all-time school homer list. The McDonough, Ga. native is only five home runs away from the No. 3 spot on the list at 25. Nowacki would have to hit 12 round-trippers to take the top spot from former-teammate Lauren Jones, who holds the school record with 32. Last season, Nowacki knocked 10 balls over the fence, which tied her for fourth for the most homers in a single season in the record book. Medlam Earning Her ERA Junior pitcher Kaitlyn Medlam is currently fourth in the GSU career list with a 1.82 ERA. Over two seasons, Medlam has allowed only 51 earned runs during innings pitched. Medlam led the team in most pitching categories last season, including ERA (1.99), wins (14), saves (4), strikeouts (98) and opponent s batting average (.194). The native of Bethlehem, Ga. has compiled a career record of 24-6 with eight saves. She was named the 2011 CAA Rookie of the Year and has been selected to the All-CAA second team twice. Base Thief With 32 stolen bases in her career, senior Whitney Phillips is currently tied for ninth-most in program history. Phillips would need only five more base swipes to move into fifth on the list. The second baseman led the team last season with seven stolen bases and her 16 in 2011 rank 10th on GSU s single-season steals list. Strength of Schedule Three of the opponents the Panthers will face during the 2013 season are currently ranked in the USA Today/NFCA preseason Top-25 poll: No. 1 Alabama, No. 9 Georgia and No. 20 Hofstra. Three others (Virginia Tech, Mississippi State and South Alabama) are receiving votes. Eight of the teams on GSU s schedule played in the 2012 NCAA tournament, including the reigning national champion Crimson Tide. Three of these opponents are also defending conference champions. Georgia State played four ranked teams last season and managed a 2-2 record against these foes. The wins came against No. 2 Alabama and No. 25 Georgia Tech, while GSU lost to No. 8 Georgia and No. 24 Auburn. Preseason Polls Georgia State was selected to finish 2nd in the CAA, according to the preseason coaches poll. The Panthers tied with James Madison with 40 votes apiece. Defending champion Hofstra was unanimously picked to repeat their title in Four Panthers were also predicted to finish on All-CAA teams, as named by College Sports Madness. Lauren Coleman and Callie Alford were both selected to be on the first team, while Kaitlyn Medlam and Ashley Christy landed on the allconference second team. This comes as no surprise as all four were named to All-CAA teams during last season. Roger That, Coach Georgia State head coach Roger Kincaid begins his third season in charge of the Panthers. During that time, Kincaid has compiled a record of (.632), including a (.700) mark in CAA play. Kincaid took over on an interim basis after the retirement of longtime head coach Bob Heck in Kincaid immediately led the Panthers to a CAA conference title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. He was named the CAA Coach of the Year and hired as the program s permanent head coach prior to the 2012 season.
