Natural Grass/Clay Program History ALMOST PERFECT Noteworthy Pitcher McCall Langford came within two outs of throwing a perfect game on Feb. 26 against Robert Morris. Langford set down the first 19 Colonials batters in order before allowing a bloop hit over third base in the seventh inning. She still earned the 5-0 compete-game shut-out win. The LaGrange, Ga., native almost achieved perfection last season as well. On March 27 at Towson, Langford tossed a no-hitter in a 3-0 win. The only base runner allowed was a walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. COME BACK KIDS The Panthers have had a knack for come-from-behind victories so far this season. The most dramatic of which resulted in a walk-off home run by Brenna Morrissey to down Central Arkansas on Feb. 25. Paige Nowacki also hit a grand slam in the sixth inning of a 7-5 win over Western Carolina back on Feb. 12, in a game that GSU trailed 5-1 at one point. Against Tennessee Tech on March 2, the Panthers trailed 5-0 after the first inning and 7-2 after the third, but stormed back to win the game 8-7. GSU scored five runs in the fifth inning and Lauren Coleman s sixth inning solo homer gave the Panthers a lead and the eventual victory. HOW UPSETTING For the first time since the 2010 season, Georgia State softball upset a nationally ranked opponent with a 2-1 win over No. 25 Georgia Tech on Feb. 29. This was also the first time that the Panthers had beaten the Yellow Jackets in ten tries dating back to The two teams will meet again this season on April 11. GSU dropped a game to the 19th ranked Aurbun Tigers on Feb. 22nd this year. The Panthers have to more currently ranked teams remaining on their schedule in No. 1 Alabama and No. 7 Georgia. AWARDS WATCH Four weeks into the season, Georgia State has claimed five CAA weekly awards. Paige Nowacki has two CAA Player of the Week honors after hitting three home runs one week and a game-winning grand slam another. Alana Thomas and McCall Langford have each earned conference Pitcher of the Week awards. Langford earned three wins in one week and Thomas got two in another. Freshman Lauren Coleman was named the Rookie of the Week to start the season. The Panther first baseman hit two home runs during the opening week of play. 3 2012 Georgia State Softball 3 GEORGIA STATE OF MIND With a name like Georgia State, it makes sense that the Panthers should play most of their games in the state of Georgia. By our calculations, the team should play 39 of the 56 game schedule in the Peach State. Besides the home contests in Panthersville, that total included in-state trips to Woodstock for two tournaments, a doubleheader in Statesboro against Ga. Southern, the short trip to North Avenue to face Ga. Tech and the drive to Athens for a match-up with the Bulldogs of UGA. In fact, the team didn t leave Georgia until their March 8 contest in Jacksonville, Ala.; 21 games into the 2012 season. SAVE THE GAME With three saves to her credit this season, sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Medlam is currently tied for second in the nation in that category. She trails only Pacific s Tori Shepard who has five saves this year. Last season, Medlam had four saves, which ranked her in the top 15 in the country. Fellow Panther reliever Erin Collins recorded seven saves in 2011, placing her in the top five. SENIOR CITIZENS After graduating only two seniors last season, Georgia State has eight fourth-year players on its 2012 roster. That number includes redshirt junior Chelsea Sparks, who will have another year of eligibility next season. The remaining members in the class of 2012 are 2B Cassie Boese, P Erin Collins, 3B Megan Kallatsa, OF Christina Reed, P Alana Thomas and OF Emily Whitaker. Between them, the Class of 2012 has logged 371 starts in 607 games played to start Those numbers include the games Reed played before transferring. The lone seniors of 2011 were first baseman Lauren Jones and outfielder Tiffany Bess. Jones finished her career as the all-time program leader in home runs and remains a part of GSU softball as a student assistant coach. COULD YOU REPEAT THAT? The 2011 season was monumental for Georgia State softball. The Panthers won the first CAA championship since joining the conference in They advanced to only the second NCAA Tournament in program history. Eight Panthers were named to All-CAA teams, including the CAA Rookie of the Year Kaitlyn Medlam. Four Panthers were named to the CAA All-Tournament team, including the tournament MVP Alana Thomas. Pitcher McCall Langford was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All- Region second team. But with 17 letterwinners returning and only losing two, the 2012 season could be equally as memorable. ROGER THAT COACH Head Coach Roger Kincaid was promoted to full-time head coach of the team in July of Kincaid had served on an interim basis since February of last year when long-time head coach Bob Heck retired. During that time, the team posted a record, managed to win the CAA championship and advance to the NCAA tournament. On top of that, Kincaid was named 2011 CAA co-coach of the Year. TOUGH SCHEDULE During the 2012 season, the Panthers face six different teams that made trips to the NCAA tournament last year. That includes games against in-state rivals Georgia and Georgia Tech; three foes from Alabama in Auburn, Jacksonville State and Alabama; and nearby Chattanooga. Add those non-conference opponents to an always potent CAA slate and the Panthers will be challenged early and often in NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Directly opposite of these seniors is the stellar class of freshman beginning their Georgia State careers in Callie Alford and Lauren Coleman have started every game thus far this season for the Panthers and have been making a significant impact. Named the CAA Rookie of the Week to open the season, Coleman is second on the team in batting average and hits. Meanwhile, Alford paces GSU in RBI and walks. Freshmen Ashley Christy, Bethany Horne, Shannyn Palazzo and Emily Clay have all gotten playing time and provide the team with much needed depth.
