It marked just the third time that GSU has beaten a ranked opponent. The first such event occured in 1994 when Cal St. Northridge, ranked sixth, was toppled by Georgia State, 2-1. In 2002, No. 10 Florida Atlantic fell to GSU, 3-2. PANTHERS HONORED BY THE CAA Three Panthers have been honored by the CAA so far this season. Langford guided GSU to a 7-1 win over No. 23 Kentucky at the Buzz Classic as she tossed a complete game. Langford allowed 10 hits and no earned runs. She also struck out one batter, while walking only one. ONCE THEY GET PAST THE FIRST INNING Georgia State has had trouble in the first inning this season being outscored However, once GSU gets past the first it is blasting opponents in the remaining innings. The squad is 4-6 when losing after the first with two of the wins coming in rallys against Mercer and Tulsa on March 16. MASON PRODUCES GAME WINNERS Freshman outfielder Audrey Mason came through big for the Panthers in their doubleheader sweep against Siena on Feb. 24. In game one with the Panthers trailing 2-1 with two outs in the sixth inning, the Kennesaw, Ga., product doubled scoring two runs as GSU rallied to win, 4-2. In game two, Mason produced another game winner with two outs. With the score deadlocked at one in the fifth, Mason hit a single that scored Danielle Roddy and Lauren Fetters pushing the score to 3-1. In the sixth, with the Panthers hovering around the eight-run rule, Mason tripled, scoring two, to end the game after six, 9-1. Mason did it again in a 3-2 seventh-inning rally over Mercer on March 13. With the Panthers trailing 2-1, she hit a double to right field that scored the tying run. Advancing to third on the throw, she scored on a Lauren Jones single to win the game. LANGFORD IMPRESSIVE IN ROOKIE CAMPAIGN Freshman pitcher McCall Langford has begun the year strong going 6-1 with a 1.28 ERA in 54.2 innings pitched. The LaGrange, Ga., native pitched a complete game against No. 23 Kentucky, allowing only one run. STARTING OFF THE YEAR STRONG Before breaking fingers on her right hand, freshman Whitney Phillips was having a remarkable beginning to her Panther career. Through three games the Stockbridge, Ga., native was batting.556 with a slugging percentage. She had five hits with three triples and a double and had driven in four RBI.
3 Head Coach Bob Heck 23RD SEASON ( ) Georgia State s living legend of softball, Bob Heck, took the program from slow-pitch to fast-pitch status 25 years ago and has continued the growth pattern ever since. When the normal called for two years to take a program into NCAA fast-pitch, Bob Heck said he could do it in one. When Georgia State moved to the Colonial Athletic Association in and some sports needed time to grow, Bob Heck stepped up to the challenge and won the regular-season title in his first year and advanced to the tournament championship game. Heck enters the 2010 season with 1,218 games coached in 22 seasons as the head coach at Georgia State. With 658 career victories, he ranks among the nation s active leaders. Heck has earned Coach of the Year honors in both the Atlantic Sun and the CAA. He has coached six conference champions and one NCAA tournament team. Heck has reached seven other conference championship games. During his career at State, Heck has had 48 student-athletes earn first team allconference recognition and 30 more earn second team honors, while six have received All-Freshmen honors. Five conference players of the year, five conference rookies of the year (including a streak of four straight), one pitcher of the year, two scholar-athletes of the year and one CAA 25th Anniversary Team member also dot coach Heck s resume. Prior to beginning the school s fast-pitch program in 1985 Heck had a long and successful career as a national bank examiner and as the Vice President of the Atlanta Federal Reserve, with whom he retired in Heck also served our country in World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy before graduating from the University of Georgia in Bob Heck Year-By-Year Year Won Lost Tie Games Honors 1985(1) (2) (3) (4) (5) NSWAC Champs 1990(6) NSWAC Champs 1991(7) (8) TAAC Champs 1993(9) TAAC Champs 1994(10) TAAC Champs NCAA Regionals TAAC Coach of the Year 1995(11) (12) (13) (14) Retired, (15) (16) (17) (18) (19) CAA Reg-Season Champs CAA Coach of the Year 2007(20) (21) (22) (23) Totals: 23 years ,244 PLAYING TO THE END Around the Bases Last season Georgia State had 12 of its 50 games decided by one run and played in five extra-inning games. So far this season, the Panthers have played in 6 one-run games and three extra-inning affairs. Ten games have been decided by two runs or less. The Panthers are 5-1 in one-run contests and 3-0 in extra-inning games. BESS MAKING THE MOST OF HER CHANCE Junior Tiffany Bess didn t start the game against Auburn but made her presence known when she came in during the seventh inning to pinch hit. The Watkinsville, Ga., native promptly bashed a two-run home run that ignited the GSU rally. In the next inning, while playing left field, Bess tossed out a runner at home plate to preserve the tied ball game. CLOSING IN ON RECORDS Georgia State seniors Rachel Cunningham, Danielle Roddy and Lily Skelton are inching closer and closer to several school career records. Cunningham is know in fifth place for career RBI with 91 and four doubles away from the top five, while Skelton is currently in the fifth spot for career HRs with 21. Roddy, who already holds the school record for career walks, is now second in runs scored (141), fourth in doubles (40) and fifth in hits (208). HOME SWEET HOME Despite the First Pitch Classic cancelation, Georgia State plays a remarkable 28 home games at Panthersville this season and 37 of its 52 games inside the Atlanta area. The Panthers will only leave the state of Georgia this year for trips to UNC Wilmington (Wilmington, N.C.), Furman (Greenville, S.C.), Delaware (Newark, Del.) and George Mason (Fairfax, Va.) So far this season the Panthers are 10-2 at the friendly Bob Heck Field confines. RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY The 2010 Georgia State First Pitch Classic that was scheduled for Feb was canceled due to snowstorms that moved through the area on the 12th. Both Army and Saint Louis could not find flights that would land in Atlanta and efforts to play a doubleheader with Western Carolina on Sunday were for not as the weather prevented the area from being playable. It was the first time in six years of hosting the First Pitch Classic that the entire tournament had to be canceled due to weather. JOINING THE SQUAD Georgia State welcomed six new members to the Panthers squad this season. Freshmen McCall Langford (P), Audrey Mason (OF), Paige Nowacki (3B), Whitney Phillips (OF) and Carrie Williams (OF) and Virginia Tech transfer Heather Lowry (P) all have seen their first action in GSU blue and white this spring. SIGNED FOR 2011 Four new Panthers have already signed on for next softball season. Incoming freshmen include Jessica Clifton (Locust Grove, Ga.), Megan Kildahl (Shadydale, Ga.), Kaitlyn Medlam (Bethlehem, Ga.) and Madeleine Stanton (Alpharetta, Ga.)
4 Around the Bases LEADERS ON THE FIELD This years co-captains are senior Lauren Fetters (OF) and junior Lauren Jones (1B). A LITTLE LONGER TREK FOR THE HOLIDAYS Sophomore Cassie Boese (Middlebury, Ind.) is the only Panther that is not from the state of Georgia. CAA 25th ANNIVERSARY TEAM GSU had one former Panther great named to the CAA 25th Anniversary Team. Former pitcher Elizabeth Hyman ( ) earned a spot on the 25-member squad after producing a stellar 2006 season that included CAA Pitcher of the Year honors and a spot on the All-CAA first team.
