LEADING OFF: After winning seven of their last nine games while displaying one of the nation s most prolific offenses, the Georgia State baseball team makes the short trip up I-75 for a mid-week game at in-state rival Kennesaw State, Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Stillwell Stadium. Live radio coverage is available on WRAS-FM 88.5 Featuring one of the nation s top offenses, the Panthers are 11-6 on the season after winning their opening conference series from George Mason, two games to one. Kennesaw State is 9-7, pending Tuesday s game versus Auburn. This is the first of four games this season between the two Atlanta-area schools. It makes for a good intra-city rivalry, said GSU head coach Greg Frady of playing the Owls, who swept three games last season. It s been a great back-and-forth between the two teams, but they got the better of it last year. We know they have a very good team. It s fun to play them. The fact that we re playing four times, we re going to get to know each other really well over the next few weeks. As for us, when you win a conference series against a very good team, you feel that your team is playing well and making progress, Frady continued. Georgia State LEADS THE NATION in batting average at.346 and ranks fourth nationally with 9.5 runs per game. Sophomore third baseman Caden Bailey brings a.397 average and a 19-game hitting streak into the week, including a game-winning, walk-off home run in Sunday s series-clinching win against George Mason. Junior shortstop Chad Prain leads the Panthers with a.435 average and 18 run batted in. Freshman center fielder Josh Merrigan of Marietta, Ga. (Walton HS), named CAA Rookie of the Week on Feb. 18, continues to impress with a.417 batting average, 17 RBI and 22 runs scored. He leads the conference in hits (30) and runs while ranking fourth in RBI. Senior catcher Scott Sarratt, last week s CAA Player of the Week. is batting.390. On the mound, senior right-hander Nick Squeglia (2-0, 5.60) is scheduled to start for the Panthers. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native has 13 career victories to rank ninth in GSU history. Kennesaw State is coached by Mike Sansing, and the coaching staff also features former GSU Panther Derek Simmons as an assistant coach. Simmons was a key senior on Georgia State s 2009 CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament team. PANTHERS ON THE OFFENSIVE: Georgia State has featured one of the nation s most productive offenses through the first month of the season, and the Panthers currently LEAD THE NATION in batting average with a.346 mark through 17 games, according to the latest NCAA statistics released Monday evening. GSU is averaging 9.5 runs per game to rank fourth nationally, while the Panthers on-base percentage of.446 is third in the country. Georgia State s totals of 214 hits and 161 runs also lead the nation. Nine of the Panthers 10 regulars are hitting.320 or higher, including two over.400 in junior shortstop Chad Prain (.435) and freshman center fielder Josh Merrigan (.417). Merrigan s total of 30 hits is third nationally, while his 22 runs place him in a tie for 10th. Prain is in the Top 50 nationally in average. This year s GSU offense could rival the Panthers 2010 edition that led the nation in runs scored with 10.5 per game and ranked third with a.355 batting average. All 200 wins are special in their own way, and they re a representation of how the University is committed to baseball and the success that we re having, said Frady. Any time you have a milestone, it brings awareness to your program, and I m always looking for anything to promote our organization. But I m the first to say that when you do cross a personal milestone, so many, many people have helped you along the way.
