LEADING OFF: Georgia State leaves the city of Atlanta for the first time this weekend, travelling to St. Petersburg, Fla., for a three-game series against Boston College. Games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Al Lang Stadium. Georgia State enters the series with a record of 5-4 and a lot of momentum after Tuesday s 10-7 victory over Georgia. Boston College is 1-5. We re excited to be coming off a big win over Georgia, but now we turn our attention to going on a road trip for the first time with our young team, said GSU head coach Greg Frady, whose Panthers have played eight of their first nine games at home with the lone road contest across town at Georgia Tech. We re looking forward to playing another ACC team in Boston College,, and we are especially looking forward to playing at Al Lang Stadium, continued Frady. Playing in a big park and a different atmosphere will be another growth experience for our young team. Frady s GSU squad includes 10 freshmen, many of them playing prominent roles, and a total of 17 newcomers. The head coach appreciates the opportunity to take his team--which features four players from the state of Florida--on this trip for several reasons. I wanted to have a road series prior to conference baseball so that we learn how to travel together and work out all the small details, said Frady. Secondly, we would love to play in Florida at least once a year. It means a lot to our Florida kids to go down there and play. And finally, I want the team to experience a professional park. I want them to be around that atmosphere and the excitement of spring training going on around the state of Florida. I think it can only help our team continue to grow. The Panthers are off to a hot start at the plate, leading the Colonial Athletic Association with a.343 batting average and scoring more than 10 runs per game. Freshman outfielder Josh Merrigan of Marietta, Ga., (Walton HS), last week s CAA Rookie of the Week, is the Panthers leading hitter at.472 with 12 runs batted in, 13 runs scored and three stolen bases. He leads the conference in hits, RBI and runs scored. Another rookie, third baseman Matt Rose of Melbourne, Fla., is at.361 with seven RBI. Sophomore second baseman Caden Bailey brings a.410 average and a 12-game hitting streak into the contest. Senior outfielder Mark Hogan is batting.455 with eight RBI while leading the CAA in on-base percentage at.586. Junior shortstop Chad Prain is second on the team with 11 RBI while hitting.433. Georgia State will use a weekend rotation of senior right-hander Nick Squ eglia (1-0, 3.38) on Friday, freshman lefty Garrett Ford (1-1, 4.35) on Saturday, and junior righty Aidan McLaughlin (0-2, 11.74) in Sunday s series finale. Squeglia, the fifth-year senior from Lawrenceville, Ga., is coming off stong performance in his last start when he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Alabama A&M. That gave Squeglia his first victory in nearly two years after missing the 2012 season due to injury. With a career record of 12-6, he ranks among the Top 10 in GSU history in all-time victories. Nick did a great job in his last outing, said Frady. Tech won this year s game, 16-5, on Feb. 19, but GSU has defeated the Yellow Jackets four times since PANTHERS RALLY FOR 10-7 WIN OVER GEORGIA: Chris Triplett s two-run home run in the fifth inning put Georgia State ahead and sent the Panthers to a 10-7 victory over Georgia Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex for GSU s first win over the Bulldogs since Georgia State rallied from deficits of 3-0, 4-1 and 7-4 to snap a 12-game losing streak to the Bulldogs. After Triplett s blast put the Panthers ahead, 8-7, senior Greg Bowder delivered a two-run, pinch-hit single for key insurance runs, and relievers Jerry Stuckey and Matt Rose shut down the Bulldogs over the final five innings. SUNSHINE STATE: Georgia State s trip to St. Petersburg, Fla., is a homecoming for four Panthers who hail from the Sunshine State, including three members of this year s freshman class. Infielder/pitcher Matt Rose is from Melbourne (Palm Bay HS), pitcher Matt McCloskey hails from Altamonte Springs (Lake Brantley HS), and outfielder Shane Gordon is from Cocoa Beach (Rockledge HS). Also from Florida is sophomore pitcher Connor Stanley of Oviedo (Oviedo HS). MERRIGAN EARNS CAA HONOR: Georgia State freshman Josh Merrigan was named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on Feb. 19 for his play during the opening weekend. The outfielder from Marietta, Ga., and Walton High School began his GSU career by hitting.636 (7-for-11) as the Panthers took two of three games from Butler. He drove in six runs and scored six more and also walked twice and went two-for-two on stolen bases. The left-handed hitter accomplished this while facing left-handed starting pitchers for the Bulldogs each game. Merrigan, now starting in center field, has remained hot and leads the Panthers with a.472 average, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored. He leads the CAA in hits, RBI and runs scored. ROSE TAKES ON DUAL ROLE: Freshman Matt Rose has earned a spot in the everyday lineup as the Panthers starting third baseman. He is batting.361 with seven RBI. Rose is also an outstanding pitcher who was drafted in the 24th round by the Toronto Blue Jays. The 6-3 right-hander made his first appearance on the mound with a scoreless inning in a combined shutout against Alabama A&M. Then he threw three scoreless innings against Georgia on Feb. 26, allowing just one hit and striking out two to earn the save in GSU s 10-7 win over the Bulldogs. OTHER FRESHMEN IMPRESSIVE, TOO: Starting centerfielder Josh Merrigan and third baseman-pitcher Matt Rose are the two GSU freshmen who have made the biggest impact thus far, but they are not the only talented rookies contributing for the Panthers. Catcher Joey Roach has started four games, including a homer at Georgia Tech and the game-winning hit against Grambling. He is batting.333. Another freshman, pitcher Garrett Ford, has earned a spot in the weekend rotation and has a 1-1 record and a 4.35 earned run average. In all, 10 freshmen have seen action for Georgia State so far, including four position players who have started games. SQUEGLIA RETURNING TO FORM: After missing the 2012 season with an arm injury, senior pitcher Nick Squeglia has returned to the GSU rotation. The righthander from Lawrenceville, Ga., earned his first victory in nearly two year against Alabama A&M, when he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Squeglia finished with one hit allowed and a career-high eight strikeouts in six scoreless innings. The win against Alabama A&M was the 12th of Squeglia s career, moving him into the Top 10 in Panther annals. GSU CAREER VICTORIES Player (Years)... Wins 1.
