(3-2, 3.50) Sunday: RHP Tanner Thomson, Jr. (1-2, 4.43) LEADING OFF After a midweek rainout, Georgia State travels for a Sun Belt Conference weekend series at Arkansas State, Friday through Sunday at Tomlinson Stadium. Senior center fielder Ryan Blanton has a team-leading five homers, 21 RBI and 18 runs scored. Six of Blanton s 20 career home runs have led off a game, including two this season vs. Marshall on Opening Day and Coastal Carolina. Freshman pitcher Hunter Gaddis, a 6-5 right-hander who has earned a spot in the weekend rotation, leads the team with a 3-2 record and a 3.50 ERA. Gaddis took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a 2-1 victory over UT Arlington on March 18. The Panther pitching staff held No. 14 Ole Miss to one run on six hits in 19 innings in their twogame series split. Six different Panther hurlers threw in the series. Shortstop Justin Jones, the Panthers leading hitter at.300, has two game-winning hits this season. In the March 8 win at No. 14 Ole Miss, Jones delivered a two-run double in the top of the 11th inning for the 2-0 victory. On March 18 in a 1-1 game vs. UT Arlington, he hit a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth and GSU won 2-1. Catcher Nick Gatewood is one of the Panthers' hottest hitters, going 7-for-17 with six RBI in the last five games. Georgia State s 2017 schedule is perhaps the most ambitious in school history. The 2017 slate includes four different Power Five opponents and 13 games against 2016 NCAA Tournament teams, including a home series with Coastal Carolina, the defending national champions and the newest member of the Sun Belt Conference. Eleventh-year head coach Greg Frady earned his 500th college coaching victory in the Panthers 12-4 victory over Northern Kentucky on March 4. Frady now has 318 wins at Georgia State, plus 187 wins at North Florida C.C. ( ) for a total of 505. Frady is Georgia State s career leader in victories after passing Mike Hurst (293) on March 20, In the last year he has also been honored with two different Hall of Fame inductions, joining the German Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame and the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame. In 2015 on its only previous trip to Jonesboro, Georgia State swept the rain-shortened series. After two days of rain, the teams played a Sunday doubleheader, and the Panthers won 5-4 (12) and 6-3. Ryan Blanton went 8-for-11 with a homer and a triple in the two games. PRECOCIOUS FRESHMAN: Freshman pitcher Hunter Gaddis is off to a strong start for the Panthers. Now a weekend starter, the 6-5 right-hander leads the team with a 3-2 record and a 3.50 ERA. In his third career start, Gaddis took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against UT Arlington. The first hit he allowed was a solo homer to lead off the eighth and tie the game, so he was not credited with the win. His final line saw him allow one run on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Before allowing that run, Gaddis had pitched 18 consecutive scoreless innings, three shy of the school record. One start earlier, Gaddis did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and pitched seven scoreless frames in a combined shutout over Army. He also had a solid start against Coastal Carolina, allowing three runs in seven innings. MORE ON THE OLE MISS SERIES: Georgia State is coming off a 2-0, 11-inning victory at No. 14 Ole Miss (March 8). In a scoreless game, Mike Huggins led off the 11th with a single and Ryan Blanton doubled to right field to put runners at second and third with no outs. Then Justin Jones doubled down the third base line to bring home both runs. Rhett Harper pitched a bottom of the 11th to seal the win. Harper was one of four Panther pitchers who combined to allow just three hits and strike out nine in 11 shutout innings. Logan Barnette earned the victory with four scoreless innings. Ranked as high as No. 14 by Perfect Game, Ole Miss is the highest-ranked opponent that GSU has defeated since a 2012 win over No. 9 Georgia Tech. The Panthers fell 1-0 in Game 1, in which the only run was a solo homer by Ole Miss in the second inning. Six different GSU pitchers held Ole Miss to one run on six hits in 19 innings in the two games. PRO BALL EXPERIENCE: Georgia State s pitching staff is coached by former Major League hurler Chris Bootcheck, in his first year on the GSU staff. Bootcheck was an All-American at Auburn and a first-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Angels in He played in seven Major League seasons from , primarily with the Angels, and his pro career included stops in Japan and Korea. Hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Adam Pavkovich was also drafted by the Angels, who took him in the 11th round of the 2003 Draft out of Alabama. Pavkovich reached the Triple A level in his eight-year pro career. Also an Alabama grad, assistant coach Brock Bennett was a 33rd-round selection by the San Francisco Giants in ALL-AMERICAN, TIMES TWO: Junior shortstop Justin Jones has earned two different All- America honors in his first two seasons. In 2015, he was a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper as he hit.297 with 28 RBI and 35 runs scored. Then last year, Jones was a third-team CoSIDA Academic All-American with a 4.04 cumulative GPA, the highest mark on the entire 33-man Academic All-America team. THE ELDER STATESMAN: Senior center fielder Ryan Blanton is by far Georgia State s most experienced player with 180 career games, including 149 starts. Blanton has a career batting average of.277 with 20 homers, 76 RBI and 120 runs scored, along with 11 outfield assists. He ranks fourth in GSU history with nine career triples. Also an outstanding student, Blanton has been on the Dean s List or President s List every semester and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team in He plans to attends medical school. FUTURE HOME OF THE PANTHERS Georgia State University recently purchased the former Turner Field property occupied by the Atlanta Braves. The Panthers will play football in the former Turner Field, now known as Georgia State Stadium, beginning this fall. In the near future, the GSU baseball program will move into a new stadium that will be constructed adjacent to Georgia State Stadium. The baseball facility will be on the footprint of the former Atlanta Fulton-County Stadium, where Hank Aaron hit home run No. 715 and the Braves won the 1995 World Series. The area will also include student housing as well as retail development, becoming an extension of Georgia State s rapidly growing downtown Atlanta campus.
