This was the highest ranked opponent any Panther team defeated in any sport in school history. The loss was only the third for Alabama on the season and their first loss to an unranked team since It was the second win over a ranked team for Georgia State in 2012 after defeating the No. 25 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2-1 in Panthersville on Feb. 29. This was the first time the Panthers had beaten a ranked team since 2010 and the fist time they d beaten Georgia Tech since The Panthers had never beaten the Crimson Tide. GSU dropped a game to the 19th ranked Aurbun Tigers on Feb. 22nd this year. The Panthers have to more currently ranked teams remaining on their schedule in No. 1 Alabama and No. 7 Georgia. SCORING FIRST AND SCORING FAST Through 46 games, Georgia State softball has scored 46 runs in the first innings of each game. Conversely, the Panthers have held their opponents to only 20 runs to lead off ball games. GSU has a record of 14-4 in games where they score in the opening frame. Similarly, they hold a 23-5 mark when scoring first. The team is 10-8 when their opponent scores first. LIVING BY THE LONGBALL With 36 home runs so far this season, the Panthers have already cracked the top 10 list for most team deep balls in a season. They currently sit in the number seven slot and need only one more to match the 36 hit in A total of nine players have contributed to reaching this homer mark. Paige Nowacki leads the team with eight home runs on the campaign. That gives Nowacki 18 in her career, which ties her with Mel DelGallo for seventh all-time in the GSU record books. WALK KINGS Drawing base-on-balls has been another strong suit for the Panthers in Already GSU has 142 walks to their credit this season. That number is seventh highest in the GSU record books. Lauren Coleman and Callie Alford are tied for the team lead with 23 a piece. In three games against Drexel, Paige Nowacki drew six walks, including four in one game. SHUTOUT OR SHUT UP Fourteen times this season, the GSU defense has held their opponents without scoring. Meanwhile, the Panthers have only been shutout twice themselves both times by nationally ranked SEC teams. Pitcher Alana Thomas has tossed five complete game shutouts on the year, including a span of three in a row. McCall Langford has four more of the shutouts. WINNING ONCE AGAIN With their 6-0 win at UNCW, the Panthers clinched their seventh consecutive winning season. GSU has had a record above the.500 mark in each year since On April 14, Georgia State managed their 30th win of 2012 with a 8-0 victory over Drexel. The 30-win campaign becomes the 18th in school history. The 2012 team also still has a chance to close out a 40 win season, which would be only the fourth such occurrence in the record books.

3 2012 Georgia State Softball 3 ALMOST PERFECT Pitcher McCall Langford came within two outs of throwing a perfect game on Feb. 26 against Robert Morris. Langford set down the first 19 Colonials batters in order before allowing a bloop hit over third base in the seventh inning. She still earned the 5-0 compete-game shut-out win. The LaGrange, Ga., native almost achieved perfection last season as well. On March 27 at Towson, Langford tossed a no-hitter in a 3-0 win. The only base runner allowed was a walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. COME BACK KIDS The Panthers have had a knack for come-from-behind victories so far this season. The most dramatic of which resulted in a walk-off home run by Brenna Morrissey to down Central Arkansas on Feb. 25. Paige Nowacki also hit a grand slam in the sixth inning of a 7-5 win over Western Carolina back on Feb. 12, in a game that GSU trailed 5-1 at one point. Against Tennessee Tech on March 2, the Panthers trailed 5-0 after the first inning and 7-2 after the third, but stormed back to win the game 8-7. GSU scored five runs in the fifth inning and Lauren Coleman s sixth inning solo homer gave the Panthers a lead and the eventual victory. AWARDS WATCH The Panthers can claim eleven weekly conference awards during the 2012 season; the most of any season in school history. Five Panthers picked up CAA Player of the Week honors: Paige Nowacki earned the award twice during the month of February while Carrie Williams, Ashley Christy and Jessica Clifton were honored consecutive weeks during the month of April. Alana Thomas, McCall Langford and Kaitlyn Medlam have each earned conference Pitcher of the Week awards. Langford earned three wins in one week and Thomas got two in another. GSU s three Rookies of the Week awards were claimed by Lauren Coleman and Callie Alford. Coleman was selected as the CAA s top freshman to start the season and another in the month of April. RPI, NOT RBI The Panthers currently sit at 69 in the NCAA softball RPI rankings after opening the season in the 81st spot in the nation. This makes Georgia State the second highest team in the CAA. Week 1: 81 Week 2: 67 Week 3: 69 Week 4: 61 SENIOR CITIZENS After graduating only two seniors last season, Georgia State has eight seniors on its 2012 roster. They are Cassie Boese, Erinc Collins, Megan Kallatsa, Christina Reed, Chelsea Sparks, Alana Thomas and Emily Whitaker. Between them, the Class of 2012 has logged 371 starts in 607 games played to start Those numbers include the games Reed played before transferring. The lone seniors of 2011 were first baseman Lauren Jones and outfielder Tiffany Bess. Jones finished her career as the all-time program leader in home runs and remains a part of GSU softball as a student assistant coach. ROOKIE SENSATIONS Directly opposite of these seniors is the stellar class of freshman beginning their Georgia State careers in Callie Alford and Lauren Coleman have started every game thus far this season for the Panthers and have been making a significant impact. Both have been named the CAA Rookie of the Week once thus far this season and lead the team in several offensive categories. Freshmen Ashley Christy, Bethany Horne, Shannyn Palazzo and Emily Clay have all gotten playing time and provide the team with much needed depth. COULD YOU REPEAT THAT? The 2011 season was monumental for Georgia State softball. The Panthers won the first CAA championship since joining the conference in They advanced to only the second NCAA Tournament in program history. Eight Panthers were named to All-CAA teams, including the CAA Rookie of the Year Kaitlyn Medlam. Four Panthers were named to the CAA All-Tournament team, including the tournament MVP Alana Thomas. Pitcher McCall Langford was named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team. But with 17 letterwinners returning and only losing two, the 2012 season could be equally as memorable. TOUGH SCHEDULE During the 2012 season, the Panthers face six different teams that made trips to the NCAA tournament last year. That includes games against in-state rivals Georgia and Georgia Tech; three foes from Alabama in Auburn, Jacksonville State and Alabama; and nearby Chattanooga. Add those non-conference opponents to an always potent CAA slate and the Panthers will be challenged early and often in GEORGIA STATE OF MIND With a name like Georgia State, it makes sense that the Panthers should play most of their games in the state of Georgia. By our calculations, the team should play 39 of the 56 game schedule in the Peach State. Besides the home contests in Panthersville, that total included in-state trips to Woodstock for two tournaments, a doubleheader in Statesboro against Ga. Southern, the short trip to North Avenue to face Ga. Tech and the drive to Athens for a match-up with the Bulldogs of UGA. In fact, the team didn t leave Georgia until their March 8 contest in Jacksonville, Ala.; 21 games into the 2012 season.
