2 WESTERN CAROLINA SOFTBALL vs. USC UPSTATE (24-13) Wednesday, April 4 4/6:00 PM VS. MEETING USC UPSTATE: Western Carolina and USC Upstate meet for the 20th and 21st time in the doubleheader today... The Spartans hold an 18-1 advantage over the Catamounts and have won three straight... WCU got its first victory over USC Upstate almost two years to the date on April 6, 2016 when the Catamounts won a slugfest in Cullowhee... In the Catamounts lone victory WCU was trailing 8-2 heading to the bottom of the third inning, Western Carolina outscored USC Upstate 9-3 in the ensuing four innings to tie the game at 11 after six innings. In the bottom of the ninth, with Western Carolina s Kara Salvo placed on second due to the international tie-breaker rule, Madison Armstrong hit a walk-off RBI single to score Salvo and win the game. FIVE TOTAL HOMERUNS IN SPLIT WITH APPALACHIAN STATE: Western Carolina hit a total of five homeruns in the doubleheader with Appalachian State on Tuesday... The Catamounts fifth homerun of the doubleheader was a statement as freshman Addie Pate hit the first homerun of her young Catamount career to score the tying and go-ahead run that led to the eventual 5-4 second game win... In game one, Madison Armstrong, Hunter Gibbons, and Shaina Reed hit the first back-to-back-toback homeruns in program history to be the first trio to hit three consecutive homeruns in a game. GIBBONS CHASING THE HOMERUN RECORD: Hunter Gibbons hit two homeruns in the first game against Appalachian State pushing her seasonal total to six and her career total to 23. With the 23 career homeruns, she moves into a tie for third in the WCU record books.
