5 2004 Season Prospectus After a season in which The University of Texas at Arlington rewrote the school s offensive record books, the 2004 version of the Maverick baseball team is looking to climb to the next level. The Mavericks played one of the toughest schedules in 2003 and came away with a record and finished 18-9 in Southland Conference play (establishing a new mark for conference wins in a season). UTA advanced to the championship game of the conference tournament, but were left out of the NCAA Tounament. UTA is set on not letting that happen again as they return five all-conference players from a season ago and brought in the nation s 54th best recruiting class. Pitching Staff The pitching staff was the hardest hit from last season as the Mavericks lost their top two starters. Aaron Pullin is now playing in the Anaheim Angels organization and Ricky Stover is a member of the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Sophomore Mark Lowe returns after a red-shirt season and should be a valuable part of the Maverick starting pitching rotation. Lowe has worked hard on changing his arm angle and is now throwing consistently miles per hour (mph) and has topped out at 96 mph. During the fall season, Lowe struck out 20 batters and only walked two in 16 innings of work. Chris Reed has improved his breaking ball and added velocity and should make a push to become a weekend starter. In his first season as a Maverick, Reed went 0-1 with a 4.34 ERA in 14 relief appearances. Junior college transfer Jake Baxter should step right into the rotation. Baxter comes to UTA from Cypress College where he used a late-breaking slide and a plus fastball to go 10-3 with a 3.21 ERA in 97 innings pitched. Senior Derek Brehm could play a vital role in the success of the pitching staff this season. Brehm has all the tools to be a dominating pitcher, but breaks have not gone his way and leave him fighting for a spot in the starting rotation. The Maverick bullpen will be solid as last year s No. 3 starter Charlie Coffey should move back into his normal role of long reliever. Last season, Coffey made 21 appearances on the mound, with 10 starts, and ranked second on the team in wins by going 7-4 with a 4.69 ERA. He also earned one save and was third on the team with 63.1 innings pitched. Mike Snapp returns for his senior season as the school s all-time leader in appearances with 95, and is just two appearances shy of becoming the SLC all-time leader. Snapp has rested himself very comfortably as the team closer. He had a team high six saves a year ago while posting a 4-4 record with a 5.76 ERA. In his career, Snapp has posted 11 saves and needs seven more to tie for the alltime lead. Right handers Blake Pierson, Michael Gardner and Michael Garza, along with lefties B.J. Brandenberger and Andy Watson should continue to add depth to the bullpen. The pitching staff was solidified with the addition of six new arms including junior college transfers Bric Steed, Grant Varnell and Hardy Hutto. Steed, a left hander, earned all-conference laurels by posting a 10-2 record with a 1.98 ERA at Northeast Texas Community College. Varnell is a big, strong, right hander who went 9-2 and posted a 1.61 ERA, the seventh lowest in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), while at North Central College. Hutto led Garden City Community College to the West Sub-regional championship by going 5-5 with 50 strikeouts in 59.1 innings of work. The Mavericks also added three freshman right-handed arms in Dillon Farish, Jeremiah Haar and Brian Hahn. Catchers For the first time in three years, the Mavericks will be looking for a new backstop after the graduation of Dustin Bozarth. Five catchers headed into fall practice vying for the job with freshman Brett Lewis emerging at the top of the depth chart. The catcher position is relatively new to Lewis who spent much of his prep career as a shortstop and a pitcher. He has excellent feet and hands and owns a very strong arm, according to UTA Head Baseball Coach Jeff Curtis. Four other catchers will be battling for playing time as three junior college transfers one freshman are on the roster. Ricky Batten earned academic All-America honors at New Mexico Junior College in He was also an all-area selection at Mansfield High School. Like Batten, Ryan Werner returns to the Arlington area (Arlington High) after earning honorable mention all-conference accolades at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College. Dane Ryan brings some versatility to the team as he can play the outfield as well as catcher. Ryan comes to UTA after earning all-conference honors at Mesa (Ariz.) Community College. Freshman Don Carter should push for playing time after a solid career at San Antonio s Ronald Reagan High School. First Base Senior Darrell Preston enters his senior campaign with a chance to solidify his name in the UTA career record books. The Mount Vernon product has a chance to end his career as the all-time career leader in games played, at-bats, hits and runs batted in. In 2003, Preston earned honorable mention all-slc honors after hitting.313 with three home runs and 39 RBIs. Preston will be pushed this season by Ryan Nelson who earned first team All-America honors at Seward County (Kan.) Community College. In his sophomore campaign, Nelson hit.507 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs. Freshman Brian Hahn will push to see some time at first base as well as on the mound. Hahn comes from Alief Hastings High School where he earned first team all-district honors after hitting.440 with six home runs and 33 RBI. Second Base Junior college transfer Carey Avants will be looked to fill the void left at second base by the very offensive second team all- SLC selection Chris Taylor.
6 2004 Season Prospectus Avants enters his first season as a Maverick after earning all-conference honors at Navarro Junior College in which he hit.385 with four home runs and drove in 35 runs. A solid defender, he should add some stability to the top of the UTA lineup, said Curtis. Avants will be challenged for the starting second base job by freshman Dillon Farish. Farish comes from Midland High School where he hit.371 with five home runs and 38 RBI to help him earn first team all-district honors. Kasey Baker is making the switch from the infield to the outfield and could see time at either corner spot. Baker was use primarily as a designated hitter last season when he hit. 344 with a school-record 22 doubles, three home runs and 33 runs batted in. He stole 12 bases in 16 attempts as a leadoff hitter. Newcomer James Belt will be looking to add depth to the outfield. Belt comes to UTA after earning honorable mention alldistrict honors at Mesquite High School. Shortstop Seward County transfer Josh McSpadden will get the nod at shortstop this season after earning third team All-America honors a year ago. McSpadden has great range at short and the ability to hit in the gaps as he showed with his 17 doubles in Freshman Aaron Cook will look to push McSpadden after finishing his prep career by earning Texas High School Coaches Association first team all-state honors at The Woodlands High School. Third Base The most difficult task on the 2004 teams is replacing All- American and SLC Player of the Year Ryan Roberts. The unenviable task will fall on the shoulders of Aaron Batlle or Daniel Macha. Batlle earned honorable mention all-conference honors at shortstop last season. Batlle, who will also see time at short, committed only four errors and owned a.979 fielding percentage. Macha who comes from San Jacinto Junior College, hit.416 with six home runs and 33 RBI as a sophomore. Outfield Despite the loss of the strong armed Robby Deevers in center field, the outfield for the Mavericks in 2004 will be improved. The outfield will led by left fielder Hunter Pence who earned first team all-slc honors in his first year at UTA. Pence is the rare combination of power speed and used it to his advantage by hitting.347 with 15 doubles, eight home runs, six triples and 42 RBI. Pence took his game to another level over the summer in the Jayhawk League where he was named the Liberal Blue Jays team MVP after hitting.427 with 12 doubles, seven home runs, four triples and 39 RBI. His play over the summer led Pence to being named a first team Summer All-American by Baseball America. The vacancy left by Deevers in center field will look to be filled by senior Paul Bruder. Bruder made 37 starts in the outfield last season with the majority coming in right field where he hit.316 with three home runs and 31 RBI. The Aussie from down under has great range and a strong arm. Ryan will also look to see time in center field as well as behind the plate. Senior Scott Williams should return to his spot in right field where he started 29 games last season. Williams is looking to come back from an injury that sidelined him for the last month of the season. Before the injury, the speedy Williams was hitting.331 with four home runs and 24 RBI. Designated Hitter The role of the team s designated hitter will come down to who has the hot bat. The incumbent Baker will battle it out with senior Daniel Lenihan for a spot in the lineup. Last season, Lenihan thrived as a pinch hitter where he hit.306 with four doubles and 12 runs batted in Schedule Unlike last season, where the team only played 17 home games, the completion of Clay Gould Ballpark has enabled the Mavericks to schedule 33 home games. The season will get started on the road with a game against Texas on Feb. 10 and a three-game set at Tulane. UTA will open up its home season on Feb. 17 against local rival TCU. Following a road game at Centenary, the Mavericks will get used to their home ballpark as they will play 14 of the next 15 games in the friendly confines. The home schedule consists of games against College World Series participant Southwest Missouri State, TCU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, St. John s, Oregon State, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and new Division I foe Dallas Baptist. The Mavericks will get the favorable draw in conference series as UTA will play five of its nine series at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Mavericks will welcome Sam Houston State, Lamar, Nicholls State, Northwestern State and Texas-San Antonio for threegame series. The postseason tournament will be hosted by Southeastern Louisiana on May25-29.
