W, 10-7 at McNeese State May 22, 2010 It s Tourney Time For the second year in a row, the Texas State baseball team will head to the Southland Conference tournament as the No. 1 seed after claiming its second-straight league title. The Bobcats will face eighth-seeded Nicholls at 4 p.m. in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament that will run Wednesday, May 26 to Saturday, May 29 in Corpus Christi, Texas. How It s Done The tournament is set up in similar fashion to the NCAA College World Series in that there are two brackets with the winners meeting for the championship. Unlike in Omaha, the bracket winners of the Southland tournament meet in a single game to decide the championship. The winner of the Southland tournament is the league s automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament, which begins with regional play, June 4-7. Northwestern State (36-19, SLC), Southeastern Louisiana (39-17, SLC), Stephen F. Austin (34-18, SLC), UT Arlington (27-29, SLC), McNeese State (29-25, SLC), Lamar (31-24, SLC) and Nicholls (26-27, SLC) complete the postseason tournament field. Texas State in the SLC Tournament The Bobcats will be competing for its first tournament championship since 2000, head coach Ty Harrington s first season as skipper, and first ever dual championship season. The Bobcats are in overall tournament games and will be making its 15th consecutive appearance in the SLC postseason. Day One: Texas State vs. Nicholls Wednesday s contest will pit Texas State against one of two teams that took series wins over the squad during regular season play. Bobcat starter Carson Smith tossed a four-hit complete game shutout against the Colonels in the opening game of the series, but Texas State fell in games two and three, 7-3 and 6-2 to drop the series. 2 On the Mound Carson Smith (9-3, 2.78 ERA) will take the mound Wednesday afternoon, while Nicholls will counter with Clint Dempster (5-6, 4.07 ERA). Dempster held the Bobcats to just two hits and one earned runs in the May 15 dropped decision, while striking out eight batters. All-Time Series Texas State and Nicholls have met 70 times in their all-time history. The Bobcats lead the overall meetings, On Deck Texas State will play its second game in the Southland Conference tournament on Thursday. A win over Nicholls will give the Bobcats a 7 p.m. first pitch against the winner of (5) UT Arlington and (4) Stephen F. Austin. A loss will pit the Bobcats against the loser of UTA/SFA at noon. Bobcats Rack Up Postseason Honors Carson Smith Named Pitcher, Newcomer of the Year Smith was the second consecutive Bobcat to earn the superlative awards, joining All-American Kane Holbrooks (2009 Pitcher of the Year) and Keith Prestridge (2009 Newcomer of the Year). This also marks the first time in Texas State history a player has earned both awards. The Midland, Texas native made 22 appearances on the mound this season and started in 12 games. The sophomore won a team-high and league second-best nine games (9-3) and in innings pitched, posted the No. 2 SLC ERA with a Smith held opponents to a.227 batting average while striking out 90 on the season, No. 10 all-time in the Texas State single season record books. In the right-hander s career season, he has tossed six complete games, five of which have come in his last consecutive starts, and shutout three opponents. Smith also has three saves on the season and in his last 31 combined innings pitched, has allowed just one earned run. Smith, Livingstone, Kubitza Named All-SLC First Team Smith received first team honors, as well as teammates Kyle Livingstone and Kyle Kubitza. Livingstone led the team and finished the regular season fourth in the league with a.373 batting average. The senior leads the team with 60 RBI to date and has recorded 15 multi-rbi games. Kubitza closed out the regular season hitting.351 with 29 hits for extra bases. The sophomore tied Livingstone s mark with 10 home runs this season and has brought in 50 RBI. Atwood, McVaney, Martinson Land on Team Bobcat Bret Atwood (outfield) picked up his second-straight all-conference honor, joining Jeff McVaney (designated hitter) on the conference second team. Jason Martinson (shortstop) earned third team honors, while Senior Laurn Randell (outfield) was named honorable mention. 30-Win Season for Harrington With a overall record entering the SLC tourney, head coach Ty Harrington has successfully led his team to its fourth-consecutive 30-plus win season. In his 11 years, the Bobcats have reached the plateau 10 times, missing out in 2006 (29-30). Score Early and Often Texas State has outscored opponents this season, which translates to an average 7.1 runs scored against opponents 5.4 runs. The largest scoring gap falls in the first inning. Texas State has scored 49 runs to opponents 29. The Bobcats are 15-4 in games they ve scored in the first inning and 18-6 in games they ve scored first. Going Deep Texas State has hit 43 home runs this season and against McNeese State, the Bobcats put a season-high four long balls over the fence in a game. Jeff McVaney initiated the feat with a two-run home run which proved to be the game winner. Andrew Stumph followed up with a solo homer in the second and McVaney added another long ball to his slate in the sixth. Kyle LIvingstone closed out the 13-1 run rule with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh. Both Livingstone and Kyle Kubitza lead the team with 10 to date. Smith Tosses Fifth-Straight Complete Game Sophomore Carson Smith has been outstanding on the mound for Texas State, and since his initial seven-inning run rule win over Central Arkansas, Smith has gone on to throw five additional complete games, including three shutouts. Smith shutout UTSA, allowing only two hits and followed up with a five-hit shutout against Nicholls on the road. In the Bobcats regular season finale, Smith blanked UT Arlington for seven innings to pick up his third-straight complete game shutout in as many starts. Livingstone Garners National Attention Senior Kyle Livingstone was named to the College Baseball 360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll on Apr. 26 after playing a key role in Texas State s 3-1 outing. Stone went 5-for-11 with four RBI and three runs scored in the four-game week and catapulted the Bobcats midweek victory over the Bears with a three-run double and two runs scored. He backed the effort with four hits against the Demons. Ten After Seven The Bobcats have closed up shop early in six games this season, including twice in the final week of regular season play. The Bobcats were tied with Prairie View A&M, Wednesday, 6-6 heading into the eighth inning and exploded for ten runs, including a three-run homer from Kyle Livingstone, to call the game. In Southland Conference play, the Bobcats took a 12-1 win over Lamar (3/27) and used the league s run rule in a 14-2 win over Central Arkansas (4/9). Texas State also took a 10-0 seven-inning win in the opening series game agains t UTSA and repeated the feat at McNeese State this weekend in a 13-1 victory. In the Bobcats series victory over UT Arlington, Texas State took a 10-0 run rule to claim the first game. Sibley Earns All-Academic Honors Sophomore Tyler Sibley was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine District VI All-Academic team recently. Sibley holds a 3.92 GPA in exercise and sports science while performing stellar on the field, batting. 302 with 12 hits for extra bases this season. TY HARRINGTON Ty Harrington enters his 11th season at the helm of the Texas State baseball program. In one decade, Harrington has amassed 337 wins and 9-of-10 winning seasons. In 2009, the Bobcat skipper led his team to a season, the most wins captured by a Texas State team in a single season. The Bobcats also went a program-best 24-7 in the Southland Conference, en route their first-ever SLC Championship Title. Harrington earned the 2009 SLC Coach of the Year award, and coached the 09 Player of the Year, Hitter of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Under Harrington s leadership, Texas State has advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship Tournament twice, including their 2009 appearance as the No. 2 seed in the Austin Regional. (Texas Texas State Army Boston College) Harrington has coached 49 student-athletes that have been named to the All-SLC teams, eight players that have been to the South-Central Region team and most recently, three players receiving All-American honors. 3 Two-Way All-Day Sophomore Jeff McVaney is a two-way player on all accounts, sharing time a student and athlete, baseball and football player, as well as a pitcher and designated hitter. McVaney is excelling at all of the above, but on the diamond, the southpaw boasts a 1.69 ERA in 22.1 innings of work, while striking out 11. At the plate, McVaney is hitting.335 with eight home runs and 35 RBI. Broken Records The 2010 Bobcats are breaking records as the season continues. Below is a list of achievements so far: Bret Atwood: 115 career runs scored - No career at-bats - No career hits - No. 4 Carson Smith: 90 single season strikeouts - No. 10 Garret Carruth: 5 single season saves - No. 7 Carruth Named to Midseason Watch List Garret Carruth was named to the midseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, an honor given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. The Lewisville, Texas native is 5-3 on the season with a 3.32 ERA in 38.0 innings pitched. Carruth has struck out 39 batters while walking 12 in 27 appearances. Streaking... Junior Jason Martinson broke an 11-year old record with a 23-game hit streak, beginning March 13 and ending Apr. 23. Northwestern State held the slugger hitless in the first game of the series to end the streak. Terrence Moore held the previous record in 1999 with 21 games. Randell s Range Senior Laurn Randell showcased his talents from right field this season with 10 outfield assists. The mark is second in the nation. (Taken from generated responses) Drawing a Blank Last season, Texas State scored at least one run in each game to avoid the shutout... In fact, in 2008 Texas State was shutout just twice, falling 3-0 to UTSA and 11-0 to Texas. This season, the Bobcats have been blanked three times at the plate... Rice took a 5-0 decision on March 3 in the team s home opener and TCU took a 4-0 decision on March 23. In SLC action, Northwestern State blanked the Bobcats in an 8-0 decision after losing the first two games. Going For The Cycle On March 21, Jason Martinson completed his cycle in fashion. The junior needed a home run in his last at-bat and the Bobcats trailed Sam Houston State 8-7 with a runner on base. Martinson belted the game-winning hit to right field for the team s 9-8 victory to clinch the series. Randell Receives National Recognition Texas State senior Laurn Randell spent the week of April 6-11 dominating the plate. Randell went 11-for-15 in the Bobcats four games and received SLC Hitter of the Week honors along with a Hitter of the Day nod from Baseball American. Against UCA in game one, Randell went 5-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, falling a double shy of the cycle because he stretched out the hit into his second-career triple. In the three-game series, Randell batted.909 with a slugging percentage, added one outfield assist and a pair of stolen bases. Harrington Snags 350 Head coach Ty Harrington entered the 2010 season with 337 career wins, and a 12-1 run-rule of Lamar on Saturday gave Harrington his 350th-career win. The Bobcat skipper is in his 11th season with the Bobcat program. Martinson Tabbed SLC Hitter of the Week Jason Martinson (Birdville HS) took home Southland Conference Hitter of the Week accolades with his performance at the plate last week. The junior collected eight hits, four of which went for extra bases, and hit for the cycle in Texas State s 9-8 victory over Sam Houston to clinch the series. Swiping Bases Laurn Randell leads the team with 13 stolen bases, slowly working his way up the career stolen bases list with 36, a No. 6 mark currently , Adam Witek (06-09) 2. 46, Jack Wickersham (96-98) 3. 40, Dominic Ramos (02-05) 4. 39, Thomas Field (06-08) 5. 38, Evan Tierce (01-04)/Jason Washington (99-02) Grand Slammin On Andrew Stumph s lone hit of the night against Penn State the freshman cleared the bases with his second home run of the season, but Texas State s first-ever grand slam of the season to aid the Bobcats 20-6 tally. Sibley Named to QTI Classic Team Texas State opened the season with a three-game showcase at the QTI Baylor Classic in Waco. The Bobcats joined Baylor, Texas A&M and Western Kentucky in the six-game jaunt and unfortunately went down However, Tyler Sibley batted.417 in the effort, going 5-for-12 at the plate and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Changing Faces, Trading Places Texas State has a new look to the infield this season, shifting All-American outfielder Tyler Sibley to second base and former second baseman Kyle Livingston to first base. Livingstone replaces All-American Paul Goldschmidt who was selected in the 2009 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Sibley Named Preseason All-American Sophomore Tyler Sibley was named a third-team Preseason All-American by PING! Baseball earlier this year. In 2009, Sibley earned a spot on the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team by Collegiate Baseball and was a Second-Team All-Southland Conference selection. Preseason Favorites The Texas State baseball team is favored to win its fourth Southland Conference regular season championship after preseason head coaches and sports information directors polls were released by the league. The Bobcats return 19 letterwinners, five starters and nine pitchers from the 2009 Championship team. Last season, Texas State won its first league title since 1997 and posted its best record in program history with 41 overall wins and 24 league wins. Being selected as No. 1 in the polls is a tremendous compliment to last year s team and the returning members of our championship squad, said head coach Ty Harrington. It certainly sets up expectations and we ll be fighting to live up to those expectations all season long. Bobcats Lead Preseason Team with Four In conjunction with Texas State being picked to repeat as Southland Conference champions, the Bobcats also placed a league-best four players on the preseason first and second teams. Outfielders Tyler Sibley and Bret Atwood were named to the first team, while Kyle Livingstone and Jason Martinson were named to the second team. 26 Seasons of Baseball The 2010 season marks the 26th season of baseball at Texas State University, and the program spouts an overall record in that time span. What a Year In 2009, Texas State celebrated its 25th season of baseball by shattering the status quo. The Bobcats opened a newly-rennovated stadium, received national rankings as high as 25th for the first time in the program s history, claimed their first-ever Southland Conference Championship, posted a overall record, the most wins by a Bobcat program, housed three All-American players and received an at-large bid as the No. 2 seed to the NCAA Austin Regional.
