CARDINALS Big Red opened 2018 with three games against Top 25 opponents, and 10 have been versus 2017 NCAA tournament teams. That strength of schedule is one of the highest in the country. So far this season Lamar is 1-2 against Top 25 opponents and 1-9 against NCAA Regional teams. Five of LU s six starters so far this season are new to the team, including Noah Sills, Jack Dallas, Grason Wright, Jason Blanchard, and Taylor Rich. They ve combined for a 3.06 ERA through 64.2 innings pitched, notching a 2-7 record in 15 starts with 68 hits allowed and 51 strikeouts to 21 walks. Lamar s strength of schedule ranks 30th in the country and first in the SLC according to the NCAA. Lamar s past opponents have a combined record (.606), and the Cards first two SLC opponents are currently first and second, respectively, in the league standings. Thankfully the schedule gets easier moving forward, with LU s opponents possessing a.481 winning percentage. Noah Sills has been a revelation for Lamar in five starts this season. He ranks in the Top 10 in starts (1st, five), ERA (5th, 2.22), strikeout to walk ratio (9th, 4.60), wins (4th, two), and walks allowed per nine innings (19th, 1.59). He s on pace for 78.1 innings pitched with 65 K s to 13 walks in CARDINALS INFORMATION GUIDE The Cardinals 2018 information guide is available online at lamarcardinals.com/baseballinfoguide. STORY OF THE CARDINALS CARDINAL BATS WARMING ALONG WITH THE TEMPERATURE LU hit just.192 in February, but since the calendar flipped to March the Cards are now swinging at a muchimproved.237 rate. Cole Coker has shown the most drastic improvement. The sophomore was hitting just.171 (6-of-35) in February with three RBI and three runs scored while striking out nine times. In March he s hit.421 (16-of-38) with four RBI and three runs scored while striking out just twice. Phil Ingram (.000 in February to.364 in March), Robin Adames (.273 in February to.278 in March), and Chase Kemp (.120 in February to.235 in March) have also improved their hitting. NOTHING LIKE HOME SWEET HOME Vincent-Beck Stadium has been the home of the Cardinals since 1969, and the site of 1,402 Big Red games. LU holds an impressive mark of (.656) all-time at The Beck, including 27 seasons with 20 or more home wins. In 2017 the Cardinals went 23-6 at home, its best Beck winning percentage since LAMAR PICKED FOURTH, SIXTH IN PRE-SEASON POLLS Lamar was projected to finish sixth in the Southland Conference by both the league s coaches and sports information directors, as well as fourth in the Perfect Game and D1 Baseball preseason polls. Big Red finished eighth last season with a overall record and league record after being picked to finish third in the 2017 preseason polls by the SLC, D1Baseball, Baseball America, and Perfect Game. SLC PRESEASON POLL Rank School 1st Place Votes Total Pts 1... Sam Houston State Southeastern La McNeese Central Arkansas Houston Baptist Lamar New Orleans Stephen F. Austin Nicholls A&M-Corpus Christi Northwestern State Abilene Christian Incarnate Word PRO PROSPECTS GALORE Perfect Game and D1 Baseball ranked the Southland Conference s pro prospects, and Lamar emerged on top of 2018 s draft class with three Cardinals ranked in the Top 10 of Southland prospects. Kristjan Storrie, a right-handed pitcher who transferred into LU from Galveston CC, ranked fifth overall in the SLC for Perfect Game and 16th for D1 Baseball. He was joined in the 2018 class by Robin Adames, who ranks eighth for Perfect Game, and Tanner Driskill, who ranks ninth for Perfect Game and 20th for D1 Baseball. The 2019 Perfect Game class is well-represented by Grason Wright, a left-handed pitcher transfer from Seminole State College (Okla.) He s projected as the second-best draft prospect among Southland players in that draft class. Cole Coker was rated the third-best draft prospect by D1 Baseball. The 2020 class features Rhett McCall, a freshman catcher signed by Lamar out of Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas. McCall was the 252nd best prospect in the 2017 signing class, and an Honorable Mention 2017 Texas Region member. He guided his Barbers Hill squad to a perfect 17-0 mark in district play and a 29-5 overall record. Chase Kemp was named an Impact Freshman by D1 Baseball EX TOTAL LAMAR Opponents

LU s two shutouts this season leads the country and is 36th in the nation, and Big Red s ERA of 3.46 is third in the Southland. The Cardinal defense has been deadly in double plays, ranking second in the league and 13th nationally in total double plays this year with 22 (just one double play behind league leader Northwestern State). Their average of 1.10 double plays turned per game is second among Southland teams. Tanner Driskill s two saves in eight appearances is fifth in the Southland. WE GO BY OUR LAST NAMES HERE Lamar has three Coles (Coker, Girouard, Secrest), three Chases (Kemp, Partain, Whetsel), and two Chads (Fleischman and McKinney) on the roster. Due to pinch hitting and defensive subs, twice this season Lamar has had all three outfield positions manned by Cardinals with the first name Cole, with Cole Coker in left, Cole Girouard in center, and Cole Secrest shifted over to right field. FROM AVERAGE OUTFIELDER TO ACE PITCHER Ryan Erickson started his Cardinal career as an outfielder, playing the entire 2016 season in the position. He started 10 games that season and appeared in 14 more with a line of.143 /.163 /.170. He was perfect in 27 fielding opportunities. In 2017 Coach Davis and the rest of his staff decided to transition Erickson to pitching, where the thensophomore initially struggled. He had a ERA in 2.1 innings pitched in three appearances, giving up eight runs, all earned, on eight hits while striking out two has been a renaissance for Erickson, who has a 1.62 ERA through 14.2 innings pitched in eight appearances. He s struck out 17 while allowing six hits and walking just three so far this season. THE BO JACKSONS OF THEIR TIME Jack Dallas and Kirkland Banks are both members of the Lamar University baseball team and football team, making Lamar one of just five schools nation-wide to have two multi-sport athletes. NEW FACES, SAME TEAM 14 players return from a 2017 team that won 33 games and had five All-Conference players. Of those returning Cards, 11 were members of a stout lineup that ranked fourth in the SLC in batting average (.287), home runs (48), total hits (569), and scoring (6.4 runs per game). Of those 12 pitchers who left, two (Tod McDowell and Nathan Gabryszwki) are redshirting this season, and four (Galen Andrews, Brent Janak, Brett Brown, and Ryan Cawthon) graduated. Carson Lance (16th round, Detroit) and Jimmy Johnson (28th round, Arizona) were drafted. Lamar s 14 returnees ranks second-least in the country behind Virginia Tech s 12. ERRORS COST CARDS Of the 97 runs that opponents have scored against Lamar this season, 29 of those runs have been unearned on 35 errors. The Cardinals have lost three games this season solely due to unearned runs, against Hofstra on February 24 (3-2 in 10 innings, three unearned), against UTRGV on March 3 (8-5 in 10 innings, six unearned runs), and against Rice on March 7 (6-2, four unearned runs). In the month of March Lamar has had 20 errors, while the Cards opponents have two. LU is 1-9 in those games. PERCENTAGE RETURNING HITTING STAT... 12 DAVIS FILE HEAD COACH 3 RD SEASON AT LAMAR 2 ND AS HEAD COACH LSU, 2007 COACHING EXPERIENCE YEAR SCHOOL POSITION 2018 LAMAR HEAD COACH 2017 LAMAR HEAD COACH 2016 Lamar Assistant Coach 2015 LSU Assistant Coach 2014 LSU Assistant Coach 2013 LSU Assistant Coach 2012 LSU Assistant Coach 2011 LSU Assistant Coach 2010 LSU Assistant Coach 2009 LSU Assistant Coach 2008 LSU Director of Operations WILL DAVIS HEAD COACH WILL DAVIS, who served on staff at one of the nation s most prestigious programs in LSU for eight seasons before posting a season under Lamar Hall of Fame coach Jim Gilligan, is in his second season at the helm of the Cardinal baseball team. He was hired as the head coach on Jan. 15, In a very short period of time Davis has left his imprint on the LU program. Davis coached the team to 33 wins last season, including victories over national powers like Baylor and Rice. Near the end of the season, Davis charges traveled to Stillwater, Okla., where they took two of three from the Cowboys. Several members of the 2017 roster benefitted from Davis guidance on the field. Seven Cardinals were named to the All-Southland Conference squad. In addition to the eight players honored by the league, four Cardinals were selected in the 2017 MLB Draft the most Cardinals selected in a draft since Davis success on the field tells only part of the story. The future looks even brighter for the Cardinals as Davis has been the architect of two of the better recruiting classes in program history. His first full recruiting class as the program s head coach was ranked tops in the Southland, and 73rd nationally by Perfect Game. Davis merely followed that up with a 2018 early signing class that also ranks tops in the Southland and landed another top-100 spot in Perfect Game s rankings. Davis early success with the program should come as no shock to anyone who follows the team. During his lone season as an assistant on the staff, he helped the Cardinals post one of the best single-season turnarounds in Big Red made a 14-game improvement that year, which included a 15-game win streak and wins over nationally-ranked programs such as LSU, Arizona and Texas. With Lamar in 2016, he helped LU to six wins over teams that went on to compete in the NCAA Regionals and a fourth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, highest seed since Davis was given the obligation to work in catcher development as well as base running. He aided Bryndan Arredondo to first-team All- Southland Conference honors, first catcher to do so since Michael Ambort in Arredondo was one of four Cardinals on the first team and five overall. The Cardinals are doing more than finding success on the field under Davis. LU recorded better than a 3.0 gradepoint average both semesters last year, and have graduated all nine seniors during that time. Former Cardinals Brent Janak and Bryndan Arredondo were named to the Academic All-Southland Conference team. The son of former Louisiana Tech head coach Randy Davis, he saw tremendous success with his alma mater, including a 2009 College World Series Championship, in which LSU downed Texas in three games. That season wrapped up with a record, one of three 50-win campaigns with Davis on staff.

13 Davis has been a part of four College World Series, three Southeastern Conference Championships and five SEC Tournament Championship teams. He advanced to at least the NCAA Regionals every season but one while he was on staff and won five SEC West Division Championships. He began his coaching career as the director of baseball operations at LSU in 2008, but was quickly promoted to assistant coach just one year later. Since, the Baton Rouge, La. native has coached in both the first and third base boxes along with the catcher and outfield position groups. He was a student assistant and bullpen coordinator in 2007 after his playing career ended. After he was designated as a recruiter and directed to find Louisiana prospects in 2011, he aided the Tigers to five-straight top-10 ranked signing classes, including the 2014 group that was voted No. 1 by Perfect Game. In that time, he recruited four student-athletes from Louisiana alone that were eventual top 10 round picks in the Major League Amateur Baseball Draft. He was key in recruiting Kade Scivicque who was picked as a first-team All-American and fourth-round draft pick. Not only did Davis recruit Scivicque, but after Davis was given the catchers position group he developed the senior into a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, annually given to the nation s top catcher. He was also a key component of Mark Laird s career, a ninth-round selection in the MLB draft and All-SEC Defensive Team member; Laird was recruited out of Monroe, La. by Davis. His judge of talent extends to the mound as well, he found and signed Austin Bain who was able to claim a spot in LSU s weekend rotation as a freshman. Other than the Tigers top recruiting class in 2014, they ranked fourth in 2012, seventh in 2011 and 2015 and 10th in Along with his recruiting responsibilities, he was the director of the LSU Showcase Camps, which has aided in the discovery and signing of 37 high school athletes. The former catcher began his work with the position in 2015, and helped two catchers on staff get drafted in the same draft, Scivique and Chris Chinea. Chinea was taken in the 17th round. Under his tutelage, LSU s outfielders gained a reputation as being one of the best position groups in the nation. In 2013, the Tiger outfield committed just one error in 68 games. He helped in the development of Mikie Mahtook, now a major leaguer with the Detroit Tigers. He was an All-SEC Defensive Team selection along with Laird (2015) and Andrew Stevenson ( ). Offensively, he helped with the development of position players at the plate. During his final season with the Tigers, LSU led the SEC in 10 offensive categories, including batting average with a.322 mark. In 2014, they ranked second in the league in scoring (6.3 runs per game) and slugging percentage (.415). LSU led the conference in hits (722), doubles (128) and total bases (1,023), and ranked second in batting average (.305), runs (439), runs batted in (394), home runs (47), on-base percentage (.389) and slugging (.432) in He was also in charge of LSU s Baseball Camps, the director for the Coaches Committee booster club, direct liaison of the LSU Baseball Alumni and oversaw all summer baseball placements for LSU s athletes. Davis was a Tiger from , and was a letterman on the 2004 College World Series team. He is married to the former Danielle Hall of Bogalusa, La., who was a member of the LSU Golden Girl squad. The two welcomed their first child Everly in September He graduated with a bachelors in secondary education (2007) and masters in kinesiology (2010), and was born May 29, Head Coach Will Davis with two former players, Mikie Mahtook of the Tampa Bay Rays (LEFT) and Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros (RIGHT).
