2 014 Cardinal Baseball LAMAR GAME NOTES Lamar drops midweek clash to Texas Southern After loading the bases in both the eighth and the ninth innings, the Lamar baseball team was only able to cash in a pair of scores in an 8-4 loss to visiting Texas Southern on Wednesday evening. Over the past decade, the Cards have experienced unequaled success in non-conference weekend series, racking up an impressive 58-5 mark. Last season, LU picked up four-game sweeps over Northern Kentucky and Columbia, earned a three-game sweep of UMass and earned series victories against Washington (-1) and UTPA (-1) Since 004, the Cards have won 19 of the 0 series. Close Encounters In all five games this season, the tying or go-ahead run has made the walk to the plate in the ninth inning, as each game has been decided by a total of 10 runs. In the season opener vs. Marist, Jude Vidrine picked up one of his three outfield assists this season, combining with Tyler Sullivan to gun down the tying run at the plate to end the game at 7-6. On the following day, LU lost a 1-inning affair to UIC 6- before returning for a 4- setback to Marist. Last Sunday, the Cards beat UIC 8-7 in 10 innings. Chasing win No. 1,500 After last weekend, Lamar s all-time victory total climbed to 1,471. Getting to 1,500 would be just one more achievement for head coach Jim Gilligan, who recorded 1,59 of the victories as a head coach. He was also an assistant for 6 more in 1970 and 1971, and he played for the Cards in 1967 and 68, helping LU to another. In all Gilligan s been involved in 1,8 of the victories, which accounts for 90.% of the overall total. Gilligan moves to fifth on active wins list With a 9-win campaign a year ago and the retirement of longtime Wichita State skipper Gene Stephenson, Lamar head coach Jim Gilligan moved to fifth among the winningest active NCAA Division I head coaches. Gilligan currently boasts of 1,59 over his 6 years, trailing just Augie Garrido of Texas (1,876), Mike Martin of Florida State (1,77), Mark Marquess of Stanford (1,496) and Jim Morris of Miami (1,9). ERA with 18 strikeouts over 7 innings. Protecting the Nest has been a fortress for Lamar baseball for much of its 46-year existence. The Cards hold an impressive record within its walls, winning 67.1% of the games they play at home. Last year was no exception to the rule as LU finished with a home mark of 7-10, which is tied for the most wins at home since a 9-4 campaign in 199. Overall, LU has recorded 0 or more home victories 6 times over the past 45 seasons, including 1 of the past 1. The Cards have had.500 or better at home in all but five seasons. Bumpers and Vidrine named All-Southland Both Sam Bumpers and Jude Vidrine were named to the All- Southland Preseason team in February after outstanding junior campaigns a year ago. Bumpers, an All-Southland Second Team shortstop and Southland Newcomer of the Year in 01, hit.9 and led the team in slugging (.487), doubles (19) and home runs (4). He also knocked in 40 runs and scored 48 times, while helping the team turn a league-best 57 double plays. In any other season, Bumpers would ve likely been a shoo-in for First Team honors, but he happened to share the same position as MLB first round draft pick Hunter Dozier. Vidrine comes back into the fold after hitting.94 last year with a team-best 5 runs, which ranks him as the top returning scorer from a year ago. He also doubled 15 times and developed a reputation as one of the league s most patient hitters, earning 44 walks to post an on-base percentage of.4. Bumpers and Vidrine were two of just three players to start all 59 games last season. Cards picked second and sixth The LU baseball team was to finish second in the annual Southland preseason coaches poll, earning one first place vote. The sports information directors of the league were decidedly cooler to the idea, picking LU to finish sixth. Sam Houston State was once again the favorite as they pursue a third consecutive league title. Newcomers crucial in 014 Lamar brings in 17 newcomers this season, including 15 from the junior college ranks. If they are to repeat the successes of a year ago, it will largely depend on this group of players replacing a pair of starting pitchers and seven position players. Six of the incoming positions players each hit better than.00 with impressive numbers, led by Jacoby Middleton s.76 average with 50 RBI and 49 runs. Kevin Santana boasted of a.40 average with seven homers, 47 runs and 4 RBI, and Reed Seeley also hit.40 with 56 scores and a.476 on-base percentage. Mason Salazar was LAMARCARDINALS.COM

Derek Wade led all incoming pitchers with.04 ERA, and Zach Aitken tossed 50. innings with a.04 mark. All-Timers This past summer, the Southland recognized all-decade teams for each of the league s 50 years in existence, and Lamar ended up the big winner in the process, as Jim Gilligan was named to the list for the 1960s as a player and then earned coach of the decade for the 1970s, 1980s and 000s. In all, a league-best 5 players were selected to the teams, including 11 in the 000s, six in the 1980s, 11 in the 1970s and six in the 1960s. None were selected to the 1990s team, as LU competed in the American South and Sun Belt Conference at the time. Cards in the Pros The Kansas City Royals boasted of two former Cardinals this past summer, beginning with 01 draftee Jonathan Dziedzic, who posted a.68 ERA with 4 strikeouts in 50.1 innings of work for the Idaho Falls Chukars of the Pioneer League. He made 11 starts, finishing the short season with a -0 record. On the other end of the spectrum, former major leaguer Brian Sanches went 10- with a.0 ERA for the Omaha Storm Chasers, which is Kansas City s affiliate in the AAA Pacific Coast League. Former major leaguers Micah Hoffpauir and Randy Williams continued their careers in Japan, playing for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters and Saitama Seibu Lions, respectively. Hoffpauir finished the season with a.186 batting average and a.76 on-base mark, while Williams was valuable arm in the bullpen, striking out 45 in 8 innings of work and recording a 1.89 ERA. Former major leaguer Clay Hensley is also still playing, and he recently signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals organization. 014 Cardinal Baseball SERIES HISTORY LIU BROOKLYN Friday, Saturday, Sunday u will be opening its 014 season this weekend. Last year, the Blackbirds posted a record with a mark on the road. They will return six starters and 16 letterwinners from the campaign. u was picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Conference this season. u This weekend marks the first ever meeting between and Lamar. u LU holds a -0 record vs. the Northeastern Conference, handing Central Connecticut a pair of defeats. In 00, the Cards came away victorious in a 9-4 decision at the NCAA Austin Regional. In 005, LU put up an eye-popping -0 rout at Vincent-Beck Stadium. u is the 11th school from New York that Lamar has faced in its 51-year history. The Cards are 5-8 all-time vs. opponents from the Empire State, and this marks the second straight season that a team from the state has made the trek to Beaumont for a series. Last season, LU took home four wins over Columbia, and last week, the Cards split a two-game set with Marist.
