The Cards boast of the most conference tournament victories of any other active SLC school with 30, including 26 since re-joining the league in In that time, Lamar has secured three tournament crowns, trailing just Sam Houston State, which has four. Most recently, the Red and White rolled off four consecutive victories en route to the 2010 title. This season, Lamar comes into the tournament as the fifth-seed for the first time in school history. The Cards have a 7-4 record as a bottom-four seed in the conference tournament, including the tournament championship as the No. 6 seed in The Cards last made the conference tournament in 2011, bowing out after two games with losses to Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. PROJECTED STARTERS Darian Johnson Sam Bumpers Aaron Olivas Garret Autrey Zach Luevanos V.J. Key in Lamar s early season surge was undoubtedly the play of the Cards within the friendly confines of Vincent-Beck Stadium. LU played 23 of the season s first 27 games in Beaumont, picking up just four losses in the process. Also during this time, the team ran off an impressive streak of 12 consecutive victories, the longest such run for a Cardinal team since 1980, helping LU to a 16-2 start, the best since However, the tides began to turn a little bit as conference season began with back-to-back series losses to McNeese State and Central Arkansas. The pain was short-lived, however, as the Red and White took home the next four SLC series, including taking victories from three teams that entered the weekend atop the conference standings (Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin and eventual champion Sam Houston State). Unfortunately, Oral Roberts brought the Cards regular season title dreams to a halt, becoming the first team to sweep LU all year, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi followed up by handing Lamar another series loss two weeks ago to knock the team from the top half of the league. In all, LU took home 15 of the 27 conference games in 2013, posting the first winning season for the program in Southland play since the 2009 season. Cards vs. Lions In many ways, this season s earlier meeting between Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana proved to be a turning point. The Lions came into the game with a peerless 6-0 Southland mark, and the Cards were on the heels of a 2-4 start to league season after an impressive opening to Lamar ultimately came out victorious in their visit to Hammond in March as Dziedzic tossed a strong eight innings, allowing one earned run and striking out five in the opening game to lead the visitors from Beaumont to a 6-2 victory. After dropping the second game in tight 7-5 fashion on Saturday, the Cards left little to chance on Sunday, racking up 19 hits in just seven innings to hand the Lions a decisive 18-1 decision. All-time, the Cards are vs. SLU, taking two out of three in each of the past two seasons. In SLC Tournament play, LU has lost just once to the Lions in four games. The two sides last met in the 2008 event, where the Cards opened up with a tight 8-7 victory, but fell 17-1 two days later. However, the Cards bounced back to expel the Lions from the tournament in 4-2 fashion in the ensuing game to earn a berth into the championship game, where they fell to Sam Houston State. 4 QUICK HITTERS Lamar won 36 games this season, the most since The Cards also posted a mark in Southland Conference play, marking the first winning record for the program since The Cards got off to the best start since 1977, winning 16 of the first 18 games. In that timespan, LU also ran off 12 consecutive victories, which ranks as the longest win streak for the school since Lamar led the Southland Conference with eight all-conference selections. The total is the second-most in school history, and the most for a single team since Sam Bumpers was also honored by the league, becoming the first LU SLC Newcomer of the Year. Eric Harrington, who will miss the 2013 Southland Tournament due to injury, completed his LU career with innings pitched and 55 starts, the most in school history. His 257 career strikeouts and 28 victories rank second and third in their respective categories. He was 7-1 this year. Jonathan Dziedzic and Travis Moore combined for an impressive 18-inning display against McNeese State earlier this season. Dziedzic, a junior, tossed 10 scoreless frames and struck out 12, and Moore, a freshman, came on in relief and struck out 10 over eight to pick up the win. It marked the only game in the NCAA this season that featured two pitchers from the same team tossing eight innings as well as the only game that showcased double-digit strikeouts by two teammates ROSTER 2013 STAFF HEAD COACH JIM GILLIGAN 36th SEASON Alma Mater: Lamar, 1969 Record at Lamar: 1, (36) Overall Record: 1, (37) ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH JIM RICKLEFSEN 15th SEASON Alma Mater: McNeese State, 1985 ASSISTANT COACH SCOTT HATTEN 13th SEASON Alma Mater: New York Tech, 1995 VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT NICK CAMP FIRST SEASON Alma Mater: Sam Houston State, 2011 DIRECTOR OF BASEBALL OPS COREY TROXELL FIRST SEASON Alma Mater: TCU, 2009 CLUBHOUSE MANAGER NOLAN FROST THIRD SEASON STUDENT ASSISTANT AARON LAVERGNE FIRST SEASON 1 Joe Arechiga OF L-L So.
