BRUINS IN THE POLLS The Bruins earned preseason rankings of eighth in the USA Today/ NFCA poll and sixth in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. UCLA received one fi rst-place vote in the USA Softball rankings. In the Pac-10 preseason poll, the Bruins were third (with one fi rst-place vote), behind Washington and Arizona. BRUINS ON THE WEB Gametracker will be available for all UCLA softball games this season at UCLABruins.com. In addition, all Pac-10 contests, as well as select non-conference games, will be broadcast on the UCLA website. THREE BRUINS NAMED TO USA SOFTBALL POY WATCH LIST The Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) announced its initial watch list for the Ninth Annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award. The list features three Bruins, seniors Megan Langenfeld and Kaila Shull and junior Katie Schroeder. The award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Past winners of the award include former Bruin Stacey Nuveman (2002). The preseason watch list is comprised of 50 players representing 35 schools and 14 conferences. The list includes 27 seniors, 17 juniors and six sophomores. The ASA will announce the 25 fi nalists on April 7. A player does not have to appear on the initial watch list to be considered as a Top 25 fi nalist. However, once the Top 25 fi nalists are named, the winner of the award will come from that list. Freshmen qualify for the Top 25 list once they have competed at the collegiate level. Just days before the start of postseason play, a list of 10 fi nalists will be named and released on May 12. The fi nal three fi nalists will be announced on May 26, while the winner of the 2010 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the Women s College World Series. BRUINS IN THE SUNSHINE STATE UCLA has appeared in four tournaments in the state of Florida and owns a record of This year s stop to the Sunshine State will be the fi rst for the Bruins since 2003 when they went 5-0 at the FAU Worth Invitational in Boca Raton. The other three tournaments were played in Tampa, as the Bruins went 8-1 in 1994, 8-0 in 1996 and 6-0 in UCLA won its fi rst eight games played in the state of Florida, and following a loss to Oklahoma State on March 13, #8/#6 UCLA vs. UCF 4 p.m. PT #8/#6 UCLA vs. #16/#18 Tennessee 12 p.m. PT 1994, have won its last 19 contests in the Sunshine State. HAPPY HOMECOMING Native Floridian GiOnna DiSalvatore will have plenty of fans cheering her on this weekend as the Bruins make a trip to her home state. The junior is the fourth Bruin to come out of the Sunshine State, joining Chris Olivie, Claire Sua and Dot Richardson, who this weekend s tournament is named after. NEIGHBORS TO THE NORTH GiOnna DiSalvatore is not the only non-californian on this year s roster, as she is joined by Washington native Whitney Baker and UCLA s fi rst Canadian player, Charlotte Dolan. The freshman is the 28th UCLA softball player to hail from outside the state of California, but the fi rst to come from our neighbors to the north. The state of Arizona leads the list for the most out-of-state Bruins with seven, followed by Florida and Washington with four, Australia with three, Texas with two and Connecticut, Kansas, Hawaii, Ohio, Nevada, New York and Tennessee with one apiece. SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS Georgia, which opens the year ranked seventh by the NFCA and eighth by USA Softball, comes off a 2009 season in which it went and came within a game of reaching the Women s College World Series Championship Series. The Bulldogs forced an if necessary game before losing to eventual national champion Washington. Georgia returns 11 letterwinners, seven starters and two pitchers from last year s team. The top returners are junior infi elder Alisa Goler, who hit a team-best.455 with 24 homers and 83 RBI, and junior outfi elder Taylor Schlopy, who batted.406 with 15 home runs, 47 runs batted in and 21 stolen bases. As a team, the Bulldogs hit 85 home runs last season, batting.319 and averaging 6.3 runs per game with 78 stolen bases. In the circle, Georgia loses 26-game winner Christie Hamilton, so the ace duties fall to junior Sarah McCloud, who went 17-2 with a 2.89 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 131 innings last season. The Bruins lead the alltime series with the Bulldogs UCLA won the fi rst fi ve in the series, and since a 4-1 loss during the fi rst game of the 2005 Super Regionals, the Bruins have claimed the last fi ve contests. Just three of the 11 matchups have been on neutral sites, with the rest played at Easton Stadium. UCLA is 3-0 in neutral-site games. The last meetings came during the 2008 Super Regionals, as the Bruins swept the Bulldogs 6-1 and 6-0 (May 24 and 25). Megan Langenfeld is 2-for-4 (.500) with three RBI and three walks for her career against the Bulldogs, GiOnna DiSalvatore is 4-for-9 (.444) with a home run and six runs batted in and Samantha Camuso is 3-for-7 (.429) with four walks. SCOUTING THE KNIGHTS UCF, formerly known as Central Florida, went last season and fi nished fi fth in Conference USA. The Knights return 10 letterwinners, seven starters and three pitchers from last year s squad. The top returning hitter is senior shortstop Tiffany Lane, who hit.350 in 2009 with eight triples, four home runs and 27 runs batted in. Junior catcher/utility Abby McClain batted.333 with a team-best fi ve homers and 26 RBI last season. As a team, the Knights hit.269 with 19 homers and 35 steals, averaging 3.6 runs per game. Senior Ashleigh Cole returns as the ace of the Knights staff after going 17-8 a year ago with a 2.42 earned run average and 106 strikeouts in 188 innings. The Bruins and the Knights have met just once before on Feb. 16, 2007 in Las Vegas, Nev., with UCLA recording a 3-0 victory. Megan Langenfeld and Kaila Shull each had two hits in that contest, as Langenfeld pitched a three-hitter with fi ve strikeouts.

The Owls bring back 11 letterwinners, six starters and all four pitchers from last year s squad. Senior shortstop Blair Bodenmiller is the top returning hitter for FAU, as she hit.275 with a team-best eight home runs, 22 RBI and 17 stolen bases last season. As a team, Florida Atlantic hit.237 with 26 homers and 52 stolen bases, averaging 3.1 runs per game. Porter had a team-best 1.92 earned run average to go along with a 6-7 mark and 75 strikeouts in 109 1/3 innings, while Gressley was 9-13 with a 2.27 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 139 innings. The Bruins have won both matchups with the Owls, with each of them played in Florida. On Feb. 6, 2000 in Tampa, UCLA claimed a 7-3 victory, while on Feb. 21, 2003 in Boca Raton, the Bruins won 7-0. SCOUTING THE LADY VOLS Tennessee opens the year ranked 16th by the NFCA and 18th by USA Softball. The Lady Vols return nine letterwinners, seven starters and two pitchers from last year s squad that went and 2-2 in Regionals. Tennessee hit.303 last season with 44 home runs and 118 stolen bases, averaging 5.3 runs per game. Senior catcher/fi rst base Tiffany Huff led the team with a.399 average and 67 RBI last season, adding eight home runs and 11 stolen bases. Sophomore third base/pitcher Jessica Spigner was the top home run hitter a year ago with 14, while junior outfi elder Kelly Grieve had a team-best 39 stolen bases with a.393 average. Sophomore Cat Hosfi eld paced the pitching staff with a record, a 2.67 ERA and 221 strikeouts in 257 1/3 innings. UCLA leads the all-time series with Tennessee 5-3, but the Lady Vols have won the last two. The last matchup came at the Palm Springs Classic when Tennessee won 6-1 on Feb. 23, All eight matchups have come at neutral sites. The Bruins won fi ve in a row from 2000 to 2005, with their last victory coming in Oklahoma City on June 3, SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES Michigan begins the season ranked fourth by the NFCA and third by USA Softball. The Wolverines posted a record last season, going 6-2 in the postseason and earning a trip to the Women s College World Series. Michigan returns 15 letterwinners, eight starters and two pitchers from last year s squad. Offensively, the Wolverines hit.288 with 53 home runs and 50 stolen bases, averaging 5.3 runs per game. Sophomore utility Amanda Chidester led the team with a.350 average, adding eight home runs and 38 RBI. Junior fi rst baseman Dorian Shaw was the top home run hitter with 14 a year ago. In the circle, the Wolverines employ the tough lefty-righty combo of senior Nikki Nemitz and junior Jordan Taylor. Nemitz went 28-7 with a 1.07 ERA and 306 strikeouts in 215 1/3 innings last year, while Taylor was 19-5 with a 1.40 ERA and 285 strikeouts in 190 1/3 innings. UCLA leads the all-time series with Michigan 9-5-1, but the Wolverines won last year s matchup on Feb. 14 in Las Vegas 7-4. GiOnna DiSalvatore went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI, while Julie Burney also had two hits. The Bruins last win against the Wolverines was a 6-4, 10- inning triumph at Easton Stadium on March 15, The teams have met nine times on neutral turf, with each squad winning four times and tying once SEASON PREVIEW - PITCHERS AND CATCHERS The Bruins will have a pitching staff in 2010 that will make most Major League Baseball teams jealous, boasting fi ve quality pitchers in senior Megan Langenfeld, juniors Whitney Baker and Donna Kerr, sophomore transfer Aleah Macon and freshman Destiny Rodino. Our depth in the circle will allow our pitchers to gain great experience and recover quickly throughout a long and grueling season, fourth-year head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez said. UCLA hasn t had this kind of depth in the circle since the late 80 s and early 90 s. Leading the way in the circle will be Langenfeld, a two-time All- American, who spurred the Bruins to their ninth Pac-10 title last season. The senior went 17-3 with a 1.24 earned run average and 112 strikeouts in 141 2/3 innings. She tossed the 100th no-hitter in UCLA history against Washington and earned a trio of National Player of the Week honors (two NFCA, one USA Softball) and a pair of Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week accolades. Megan accomplished so much during the 2009 season and I believe she will be even stronger, both in the circle and at the plate, in 2010, Inouye-Perez said. She is healthy and has added more weapons to her arsenal. Kerr was tops on the staff in wins last season, posting a 19-6 record, a 2.76 ERA and a team-best 230 strikeouts in 167 1/3 innings. She led the Bruins with six shutouts and 16 complete games. Kerr held opponents to a.183 average in 2009, which was third among Pac-10 players. Donna has had a solid fall and is stronger as a result, Inouye- Perez said. She will be a big key to our success this year. Baker, a redshirt junior who has two years of eligibility left, has been sidelined by injuries throughout her career, but is still capable of blowing away hitters, as evidenced by her 73 strikeouts in 63 innings last season. She went 9-2 with a 3.33 ERA over 17 appearances and 15 starts. Whitney has put in solid work so far during practice and will be ready to compete in She has all the tools to be a leader in the circle. Macon comes to UCLA after spending the 2008 campaign at Washington and sitting out last season. She earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors with the Huskies after going with a team-best 1.93 ERA and 262 strikeouts in 224 2/3 innings. Aleah is a talented transfer that will impact our pitching staff immediately, Inouye-Perez said. She is a powerful pitcher with a great off-speed pitch to challenge any opponent. Rodino was a four-time All-Foothill League, All-Area and All-City honoree at Hart High School in Valencia, Calif. She went 26-5 as a senior with a 0.75 ERA and 277 strikeouts in 214 innings. Destiny is a mentally tough lefty with great movement on the ball. I look forward to adding her strengths to our staff this season. Continuing the theme of this season s squad of having incredible depth, the Bruins have a trio of talented backstops to handle their pitching staff. Senior Kaila Shull and sophomore Dani Yudin return, while freshman Charlotte Dolan will also be in the mix. Shull earned NFCA All-West Region and fi rst-team All-Pac-10 honors after leading the Bruins with 59 RBI in She was second with a.683 slugging percentage and 12 home runs and third with a.360 average. Behind the plate, she committed just one error in 390 attempts (.997 fi elding percentage). Kaila is a great presence behind the plate with her strong arm and consistent defense, Inouye-Perez said. Her outstanding bat makes her a great all-around player. Yudin made 50 starts during her freshman season, playing 44 games at designated player and six behind the plate. She hit.206 with four home runs and 19 RBI, was second with 23 walks and earned Pac-10 All-Freshman honorable mention accolades. Dani can swing a big stick as evidenced by some key at-bats she had last season. She is also a solid catcher who adds to our depth behind the plate. Dolan, who attended Gleneagle Secondary in Vancouver, British Columbia where softball was not offered as a high school sport, brings in solid experience as a member of the Canadian National Team in 2009, playing for the Canada Cup (silver medal) and World Cup of Softball (bronze) teams. Charlotte will impact our lineup both offensively and defensively, Inouye-Perez said. She is very strong and brings great depth to our lineup. UCLA also employs a valuable asset in sophomore Brooke Finley, who works as a bullpen catcher and who according to Inouye-Perez, is great at bringing out the best in our pitching staff SEASON PREVIEW - INFIELDERS The Bruins return three-fourths of their infi eld from last season. On the left side, senior Julie Burney and junior Monica Harrison will handle the duties at third and short, respectively, while senior Megan Langenfeld will be at fi rst when she is not in the circle. Although UCLA lost its two-time All-American second baseman Amanda Kamekona to graduation, the Bruins won t have to look far for her replacement, as junior GiOnna DiSalvatore will start at second base. Burney was one of fi ve Bruins to start all 56 games last season, ranking third on the team with 11 homers and tying for fourth with nine doubles. She hit.250 with 30 RBI and a.526 slugging percentage. Defensively, her six errors were tied for the fewest among Pac-10 third baseman. Julie will hold down the hot corner with great confi dence in 2010, Inouye-Perez said. She has a great glove and strong arm, which compliments her impressive offensive skills. Harrison had the fewest errors among conference shortstops with six and was also a force with her bat. She posted a.299 batting average with 29 runs batted in, 30 runs scored and 10 home runs, which was fourth on the team, en route to earning All-Pac-10 second-team honors. Monica is one of the top shortstops in the country and has unbelievable range. She will also add solid consistency to the offense. With all of her accolades in the circle, Langenfeld was just as big of a star at the plate, ranking second on the team with a.369 average and.471 on base percentage and third in slugging (.589). She added seven home runs and 30 runs batted in. NINE-TIME PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS (1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2009)

3 UCLA SOFTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE FEB. 9, 2010 PAGE 3 DiSalvatore has earned a pair of NFCA All-American and All-Region honors in her fi rst two campaigns. Last season, she hit.323 with fi ve home runs and 39 runs batted in, which was third on the team. DiSalvatore was also second with 48 runs and 13 doubles, seeing action at fi rst, second and right. GiOnna is our most versatile infi elder. She was an All-American at fi rst base last year and could very well be one again at second this year. She will provide great power to the lineup as well. Adding to the Bruins depth at fi rst and second base, as well as the designated player position, will be redshirt sophomore Samantha Camuso, who returns after missing all of last season with a shoulder injury. She was an All-Region and All-Pac-10 honoree as a freshman in 2008 after hitting.366 with four homers and 36 runs batted in. After taking a year off, Samantha will be back and ready to make an impact in the lineup immediately, Inouye-Perez said. Junior Grace Murray and sophomore Marti Reed will also provide depth at second base. Reed saw action in 25 games last year, making four starts at DP and one in right, but played in the infi eld during the fall. Murray, who was the fi rst pinch-runner off the bench for most of the 2009 campaign, scored 15 runs in 36 appearances last year and also saw action during the fall at second. Marti is very athletic and a hard worker and swings the bat with great confi dence. Grace is a valuable utility player who has a great work ethic and provides speed off the bench. Junior Lauren Mirabal also adds to the team s versatility. She appeared in 47 games last year, scoring 19 runs and ranking third on the team with 11 stolen bases. Lauren provides the versatility and speed we need to add even more depth to our team, Inouye-Perez said. When Langenfeld attends to her duties in the circle, Camuso and Dolan are among the Bruins options at fi rst base SEASON PREVIEW - OUTFIELDERS Two returners and a newcomer will start the season in the outfi eld, with junior Katie Schroeder patrolling center fi eld, sophomore Andrea Harrison in left and freshman B.B. Bates in right. Schroeder was a fi rst-team All-American and All-Pac-10 honoree after leading the Bruins in average (.402), home runs (14), runs (55), slugging (.684), on base percentage (.516), walks (33) and stolen bases (19). She ranked in the Top 35 in the nation in runs per game (20th), on base percentage (23rd) and home runs (35th). Schroeder posted four hitting streaks of at least seven games in Katie brings great leadership in the outfi eld, fourth-year head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez said. She has great range and a strong PRONUNCIATION GUIDE Samantha Camuso GiOnna DiSalvatore Andrea Harrison Donna Kerr Devon Lindvall ca-moo-so g-onna d-sal-va-tor ON-dray-uh rhymes with fur dev-in arm. Offensively, we will look for her to set the tone in each game as our leadoff hitter. Harrison had an impressive freshman campaign and was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman and All-Pac-10 honorable mention squads. She started all 56 games and hit.303 with eight home runs and 34 runs batted in, which was fourth on the team. Andrea has a great competitive edge. She is solid in the outfi eld and will provide great confi dence and power at the plate. Bates was a four-time Desert Sky League and All-Area fi rst-team honoree at Victor Valley High School in Victorville, Calif. She hit.758 as a senior with seven home runs, 36 runs batted in and nine stolen bases. B.B. brings explosive speed and power to our lineup, Inouye- Perez said. She has great speed and range in the outfi eld. Numerous players may also see time in the outfi eld, including junior Amy Crawford and freshman Devon Lindvall. Crawford made 26 starts in right fi eld last year, appearing in 46 games. She had four hits and scored nine times. Lindvall was a four-year letterwinner and two-time All-Foothill League honoree at Hart High School in Valencia, Calif. Amy s versatility and athletic ability will be a great strength for us in both the outfi eld and infi eld. She had a solid fall and is swinging the bat well, Inouye-Perez said. Devon is a true outfi elder. She has a great arm and can make nice reads when the ball comes off the bat SEASON IN REVIEW Although the 2009 UCLA softball season would begin and fi nish with shocking losses, what happened in between resulted in a magical run toward the program s ninth Pacifi c-10 Conference title and a 45-win campaign. Following a season-opening loss to Purdue at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament (Feb. 7-8), the Bruins reeled off six straight victories, including dramatic wins against San Diego State (Feb. 8) and Northwestern (Feb. 13) at the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. Against the Aztecs, the Bruins rallied to tie the game in the eighth on Andrea Harrison s fi rst collegiate home run and won it one inning later on a grand slam by Kaila Shull. Five days later against the Wildcats, the Bruins overcame a fi ve-run, fi rst-inning defi cit, scoring six in the third and nine in the sixth to out-slug Northwestern Katie Schroeder hit a pair of bombs and drove in six. The Bruins winning streak was snapped by Michigan on Feb. 14, but UCLA responded with its longest win streak of the season, recording 18 straight victories to improve to Among the triumphs during the 18-game stretch were a win over then-# UCLA SOFTBALL ROSTER NO NAME POS HT B/T YR EXP HOMETOWN (HIGH SCHOOL/LAST SCHOOL) 3 GiOnna DiSalvatore UTIL 5-9 L/R JR 2V Palm Harbor, Fla. During the streak, the Bruin offense was on fi re, scoring in double digits seven times. Against North Carolina State (Feb. 21), UCLA hit three home runs and scored 11 times in the second inning, tying for the third-most runs scored in one inning in Bruin history. At the Long Beach State Invitational (March 6-8), UCLA recorded a walkoff win on a Schroeder home run in the bottom of the eighth inning against Iowa (March 6) and stole eight bases, the second-most by UCLA in one game, versus Longwood (March 8). The UCLA pitching staff was just as hot as the offense. Megan Langenfeld retired the fi rst 18 batters she faced against Maryland (Feb. 22) before settling for a one-hitter. Donna Kerr came close to posting her second career perfect game on March 7 against Syracuse, setting down the fi rst 14 batters before the perfecto was broken up on a two-out single in the fi fth. UCLA had four one-hitters and fi ve shutouts during the streak, holding opponents to two runs or less in 15 of 18 victories. The Bruins saw their 18-game streak broken by Long Beach State on March 8 and temporarily struggled to fi nd their winning ways, dropping six of nine and starting Pac-10 play with a 1-4 record. The turning point of the season came on April 5 at home against Arizona. Trailing 2-0 and staring down a 1-5 start to conference play, Langenfeld came to the rescue in the circle, hurling 5 2/3 hitless innings of relief and striking out six. The Bruins came back to win 3-2 and started another winning streak on their way to a conference championship. UCLA hosted Washington (April 10-11) the following weekend and the fi rst contest of the two-game set was an epic pitcher s duel between Langenfeld and Danielle Lawrie. The two hurlers matched zeroes through the fi rst 10 innings, with Langenfeld also holding the Huskies hitless through the fi rst eight frames. The no-no was broken up in the ninth, but it was the only hit Langenfeld allowed. In the bottom of the 11th, Andrea Harrison put an end to the scoreless tie, belting a two-run, walk-off homer to give the Bruins a thrilling 2-0 win. The next day, the Bruins fi nished off the two-game sweep in runrule fashion (10-0), but the big story was Langenfeld, who tossed the 100th no-hitter in UCLA history. The only batter to reach was on an error in the fi fth. The Bruins scored six runs in the bottom of the fi fth to invoke the mercy rule and clinch Langenfeld s fi rst career no-no. For her efforts, Langenfeld was named NFCA and USA Softball National Player of the Week, as well as Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week. UCLA continued its win streak with a three-game road sweep of the Oregon schools (April 17-19) and then did the same with the Arizona squads the following weekend. On April 24 at Arizona, Dani Yudin broke a scoreless tie with a one-out, two-run single in the top of the sixth, as Langenfeld struck out eight in a 2-1 win. The Bruins then broke out the bats in Tempe, scorching Arizona State for 19 runs and 11 homers in a pair of routs. In game one (April 25), UCLA hit four long bombs, including a pair by GiOnna DiSalvatore, in a 9-1, fi ve-inning win. A day later, Monica Harrison made history by becoming the fi rst UCLA player to hit three home runs in one game. The Bruins tied a single-game school record with seven homers and defeated the Sun Devils In a situation of turnabout is fair play, the Bruins were no-hit at Washington on April 29 just 18 days after doing the same to the Huskies. It would snap a nine-game winning streak, but it would be UCLA s last loss of the regular season. The Bruins played the fi nal six contests at Easton Stadium and began by sweeping the Oregon schools again (May 1-3). After a May 7 win against California, UCLA clinched the Pac-10 title with a 1-0 victory over Stanford on May 8. A fourth-inning, RBI single by Monica Harrison was the only offense the Bruins needed, as Langenfeld blanked the Cardinal to win the conference crown. The Bruins wrapped up the regular season the next afternoon with an 8-0, six-inning victory over Stanford. The Bruins began postseason play at home, hosting Long Beach State in the fi rst game of Regionals on May 15. The game was tied at two when the Bruins received an RBI double by Langenfeld in the fourth and a solo homer by Julie Burney in the fi fth to take their Regional opener. The next day, UCLA again had a tough battle, this time against Fresno State. The game was tied at two in the bottom of the sixth when Shull doubled home a pair of runs to give the Bruins a 4-2 lead. Langenfeld did the rest, fi nishing up with fi ve strikeouts in a three-hit victory. UCLA punched its ticket to Super Regionals the following afternoon. Trailing 3-1 early, the Bruins scored seven in the second on a solo homer by Burney, a three-run triple by DiSalvatore and a three-run homer by Amanda Kamekona, going on to win 9-5. UCLA welcomed Missouri to Easton Stadium for Super Regionals (May 23-24), but the Tigers weren t friendly guests, defeating the Bruins 2-1 in the opening game. The Bruins rebounded the following afternoon with a 5-2 victory to force an if necessary contest. Shull had a two-run homer and Langenfeld went 2-for-3 at the plate while striking out six. But the season would come to a close in Game 3 of Super Regionals, as Missouri jumped all over UCLA en route to a 9-1, fi ve-inning victory, earning a berth to the Women s College World Series. The Bruins had three players selected to the Louisville Slugger/ NFCA All-American team, as Langenfeld and Schroeder earned fi rst-team honors and Kamekona was named to the third team. Six Bruins received NFCA All-West Region accolades and nine were honored by the Pac-10, including Kelly Inouye-Perez, who was named conference Coach of the Year. The Bruins also won three Pac-10 titles during that span (1999, 2002, 2006) and in 2004 were named the National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Inouye-Perez s primary responsibility as an assistant coach was guiding the Bruin pitchers and catchers, a list which includes many of the most honored and recognizable names in collegiate softball. Behind the dish, where Inouye-Perez also starred as a three-time All-Pac-10 honoree during her playing days at UCLA, she helped mold and infl uence arguably the best catcher in the history of USA Softball in Stacey Nuveman. Under Inouye-Perez s tutelage, Nuveman became a three-time Pac-10 Player of the Year, four-time, fi rst-team All-American and the NCAA s all-time single season and career home run leader. Since the Pac-10 Conference began issuing a Pitcher of the Year Award, UCLA has been honored with two winners, Courtney Dale in 1999 and Keira Goerl in Among the other pitching highlights accomplished by the Bruins over her 13 years as an assistant included at least one All-American award earned by a UCLA pitcher in 12 of those campaigns, including DeeDee Weiman, four-time Olympian Tanya Harding and two-time Olympian Amanda Freed. In addition, nearly every UCLA pitching record has been set during the time Inouye-Perez has overseen the Bruin battery and the top four pitchers on UCLA s career wins list, Goerl, Selden, Freed and B Ann Burns, were coached by her. Inouye-Perez was an exceptionally strong fi elder behind the dish for the Bruins. She made her mark immediately as a collegiate player, earning fi rst-team All-Pac-10 as a true freshman and second-team as a sophomore, leading the Bruins to the 1989 and 1990 NCAA Championships before receiving a medical redshirt in 1991 due to shoulder surgery. She came back strong in 1992, picking up second-team All-Pac-10 honors as the Bruins once again won the national championship and fi nished with a 54-2 record, the fewest losses in a season in program history. Inouye-Perez also was named to the 1992 All-Women s College World Series Team, going 5-for-12 (.417) with four RBI during WCWS play. She wrapped up her career as a fi fth-year senior in 1993 with an NCAA runner-up fi nish. Impressively, Inouye-Perez did not commit a single fi elding error during her fi nal two seasons. Among the UCLA pitchers during her fi ve seasons as a player were Lisa Longaker and Lisa Fernandez, both of whom were named to the NCAA s 25th Anniversary All-WCWS Team. During her UCLA career, Inouye-Perez played in 22 Women s College World Series games, a mark that is tied for third-best in UCLA history behind only Lisa Fernandez and Kristy Howard (23). Inouye-Perez graduated from UCLA in 1993 with a B.A. in psychology. Prior to college, Inouye-Perez was one of the top players during her ASA days, winning four national championships, with the Panthers (1984, `85 and `89) and the Raiders (1986). She also competed on an international level in Japan in 1985 and in Peru in 1987 (Pan American Tournament) and followed her collegiate career with time playing on the NPF Pro Tour. Inouye-Perez and her husband, Gerardo Perez, currently reside in Cerritos. Along with Kelly s exploits on the diamond, Gerardo competed as a catcher/dh for Cerritos College from and helped lead the Falcons to the 1989 Junior College National Championship. After a stellar career at Cerritos, he went on to compete at Loyola Marymount, earning fi rst-team All-West Coast Conference honors his junior and senior seasons. He currently teaches health and coaches baseball at Gahr High School in Cerritos. The couple has two children, Michael (10) and Kylie (5).
