BRUIN FUN FACTS Assuming weather is not an issue, the Bruins will play their fi rst full Pac-10 night game at home on Friday against Arizona State. Weather played a part the fi rst time UCLA attempted to host an evening conference contest on May 3, The Bruins and Oregon State started the fi rst night game in the history of Easton Stadium that evening, but the game was halted in the bottom of the second due to rain and completed under the sun the following afternoon... the Bruins are 6-1 in night contests this season, although their one loss occurred in the second game of the Washington series last weekend, which was suspended on Friday night with the score tied at one through three innings and resumed on Saturday afternoon... that loss against the Huskies was also the fi rst time the Bruins lost a Friday game, despite it fi nishing on Saturday, and the fi rst time UCLA fell when out-hitting an opponent. The Bruins are 27-1 when recording more hits than their foe... UCLA has not allowed a run in the second inning this season, having outscored its opponents DANG LANG Senior Megan Langenfeld returned to the Bruin lineup last weekend and continues to lead the team with a.533 batting average, nine home runs, a slugging percentage, a.659 on base percentage and 15 walks. She is also second with 28 runs batted in and 25 runs scored and fourth with six doubles. Langenfeld, who is third on the team in multiple-hit games, picked up her 10th of the season on March 26 against Long Beach State, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. The senior has four games with three hits against Cal Poly (Feb. 19 and March 23), Portland State (Feb. 21) and Northwestern (Feb. 27), driving in multiple runs in each contest. She drove in four runs thanks to a grand slam in her fi rst game against Cal Poly and had a three-run shot in the March meeting with the Mustangs. The senior also had three RBI against Northwestern and Portland State, homering against the Vikings. Langenfeld has hitting streaks of eight (Feb ) and six (Feb ) games this season and has posted at least one base knock in 18 of her 23 contests. She has also reached base in all but one game this season via either a hit, walk or hit by pitch. In the RBI department, the senior has nine games with at least a pair of runs batted in, which ranks second on the team. Langenfeld has an RBI in 14 of 23 games. She homered in the fi rst game of the season against Florida Atlantic (Feb. 13) and has also left the yard against UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 17), Cal State Northridge (Feb. 20), Texas (Feb. 26), Baylor (Feb. 27) and UC Riverside (March 3). The senior has scored multiple runs in a game eight times, including three apiece in both ends of a doubleheader at UCSB. In the circle, Langenfeld is 4-1 with a 1.14 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 43 innings. The senior tossed a career-high 13 innings in a hard-luck, 4-2 loss against Michigan on Feb. 14. She allowed only one earned run and six hits while striking out six in a 182-pitch effort. Langenfeld threw 23 more pitches later in the day when she tossed a inning with two strikeouts against Georgia for her fi rst save of the season. Her four wins have come against Tennessee (Feb. 13), UC Davis (Feb. 20), Northwestern and Long Beach State. She pitched fi ve shutout innings and struck out four against the Lady Vols and fanned six in six shutout frames against UC Davis. COMING THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH Sophomore Dani Yudin has picked up the habit of coming through in the clutch so far in her career and she did so again on Thursday against Washington, driving in the go-ahead run on an RBI single with two outs in the sixth inning of a 1-0 victory. Yudin has three game-winning RBI this year, also knocking home the go-ahead scores against Colorado State (Feb. 26) and Fresno State (March 5). Last season, she also had a clutch RBI in a victory at Arizona. Yudin, who is batting.310 with two home runs and 12 RBI in only 42 at-bats, recorded her second multiple-hit game of the year on Thursday with a 2-for-3 performance. Her other multi-hit contest came against Fresno State, when she went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Yudin also hit her second home run of the season, a two-run shot, on Saturday to get the Bruins on the board in the series fi nale against the Huskies. The sophomore has hits in four of her last six contests and has driven in a run in three of those games. Yudin had RBI in each of her fi rst three games this season, including a home run against UC Davis on Feb. 20. She has also walked 10 times, one of six Bruins with double digits in walks. DR. The sophomore is hitting.375 with a.677 slugging percentage, which both rank second on the team. She is also tied for third with seven home runs, tied for second with eight doubles and fi fth with 23 runs batted in and 21 runs scored. Harrison s current nine-game hitting streak is not her longest of the season, as she hit safely in a career-high 10 straight from Feb , batting.417 (15-for-36) with six runs batted in and a pair of home runs. The sophomore has 11 multiple-hit games, which is tied for the team lead, with all of them being two-hit contests and fi ve of them coming over the last eight games. Kerr has paced the Bruins with 118 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings, which both lead the squad. She is 13-3 with a 1.47 earned run average and has held opponents to a team-low.145 batting average. Kerr had not allowed an earned run in 30 straight innings before allowing one in the second game of the series against the Huskies. The junior has seven complete games and has been a part of eight of the Bruins 16 shutouts. Five of those blankings have been solo shutouts against Cal State Northridge (Feb. 19), North Carolina (March 10), CSU Bakersfi eld (March 21) and Loyola Marymount (March 28). Kerr has struck out at least eight batters in nine of her 16 starts, including a season-best 11 against Florida Atlantic (Feb. 13) and Northridge. She also fanned 10 at Loyola Marymount, nine against Georgia (Feb. 14), Portland State (Feb. 21) and CSU Bakersfi eld and eight apiece against Fresno State (March 5) and North Carolina. She allowed only one hit in all three of those appearances. SLAMMIN SAMMY Sophomore Samantha Camuso hit her seventh home run of the season on Friday at Washington and is tied for third on the team in that category heading into this weekend s series with Arizona State. Camuso hit the fi rst pitch of the third inning out to left fi eld in the second game of the series with the Huskies to also raise her RBI total to 27, which is third on the squad. 5 UCLA SOFTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE APRIL 6, 2010 PAGE 5 DISALVATORE, KERR SWEEP PAC-10 POW HONORS The Bruins won a pair of awards on Feb. 23, as juniors GiOnna DiSalvatore and Donna Kerr were named Pacifi c-10 Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after helping UCLA to a 7-0 record last week. It is the third Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for DiSalvatore, who received the accolade twice during her freshman season of It is also the third Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week award for Kerr, who was named POW once in each of her fi rst two seasons. The Bruins have earned 58 Pac-10 Player of the Week and 54 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors. DiSalvatore hit.682 (15-for-22) with 12 runs batted in, fi ve doubles, two home runs and 11 runs scored last week. She had hits in all seven games, including a pair of 4-for-4 efforts and a 3-for-3 performance. She drove in a run in fi ve contests and scored in fi ve. Kerr tossed 13 shutout innings in three UCLA victories last weekend, striking out 23 and allowing only three hits. THE WEEK THAT WAS Saturday - Washington 7, UCLA 2 A two-run homer by sophomore Dani Yudin in the top of the seventh inning got the fi fth-ranked Bruins on the scoreboard, but #1 Washington picked up a 7-2 victory on Saturday at the Husky Softball Stadium to win the weekend series. The Bruins fall to 27-6 overall and 1-2 in Pac-10 play, while the Huskies improve to 30-3 and 2-1 in league action. Junior GiOnna DiSalvatore had two of the Bruins four hits on a pair of singles. Junior Donna Kerr (13-3) started and allowed six runs (three earned), six hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings with fi ve strikeouts. Freshman Destiny Rodino tossed the last 1 2/3 innings and gave up one run, two hits and one walk. The Huskies scored twice in the bottom of the fi rst on a pair of unearned runs. With one out and Jenn Salling at second following a leadoff double to left-center, Danielle Lawrie grounded a ball back to Kerr in the circle, but the UCLA pitcher threw it in the dirt to third in an attempt to get Salling, allowing the Husky runner to score and Lawrie to move to second. Niki Williams followed with a double to right-center to plate Lawrie to make it 2-0. In the third, Washington added another unearned run. The Huskies opened the inning with a single to right by Kimi Pohlman and a hit by pitch of Lawrie. One out later, both runners moved up on a passed ball and Pohlman would come home on a scoring fl y ball by Shawna Wright to make it 3-0. The Huskies added four more in the fi fth. With runners at the corners and one out, Wright doubled down the right-fi eld line to plate Pohlman and Williams to make it 5-0. One out later, Hooch Fagaly walked and came home along with pinch-runner Amanda Fitzsimmons on a single to left-center by Jerrin Fa asua to increase the margin to 7-0. The Bruins avoided the shutout with a pair of runs in the seventh. DiSalvatore singled to left-center to start the inning and came home one out later on Yudin s second home run of the season to right to make it 7-2. Friday/Saturday - Washington 3, UCLA 1 The top-ranked Huskies scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and claimed victory in the resumption of Friday s suspended game, posting a 3-1 win over the fi fth-ranked Bruins on Saturday at the Husky Softball Stadium. The Bruins (27-5, 1-1 Pac-10) and the Huskies (29-3, 1-1) will square off in the fi nale of the three-game series at 1:20 p.m. The second game of the series resumed on Saturday at 11:36 a.m. with the score tied at one and UCLA immediately had a chance in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Charlotte Dolan led off with a walk and was pinch-run for by junior Grace Murray. One out later, junior Monica Harrison, who returned to the Bruin lineup after missing Thursday s game, came up as a pinch-hitter and doubled to the right-fi eld wall to put a pair of runners in scoring position. However, Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie got out of the jam, striking out freshman Devon Lindvall and getting some defensive help from third baseman Morgan Stuart, who made a diving catch in foul ground on a pop-up bunt by freshman B.B. Bates to end the inning. The Huskies scored the go-ahead runs with a two-out rally in the sixth. Niki Williams drew a walk and came around to score on a double to left by Shawna Wright to make it 2-1 Washington. After consecutive walks to Stuart and Hooch Fagaly loaded the bases, Jenna Clifton was hit by a pitch to bring home pinch-runner Jerrin Fa asua to put the Huskies up 3-1. The game began Friday night with each team scoring a run in the third inning. Sophomore Samantha Camuso hit the fi rst pitch of the top of the third over the left-fi eld wall, her seventh home run of the year, to make it 1-0. But the Huskies tied it in the bottom of the frame. Amanda Fleischman walked to start the inning, moved to third after a stolen base and a throwing error and scored on a sacrifi ce fl y to left by Jenn Salling. Junior Donna Kerr allowed three runs (two earned), two hits and six walks with four strikeouts to fall to 13-2 on the season. Kerr was sharp upon the resumption of the suspended game, retiring the fi rst eight batters she faced before the Huskies rallied for two runs with two outs in the sixth. Thursday - UCLA 1, Washington 0 Junior Donna Kerr struck out eight in a four-hit shutout and sophomore Dani Yudin delivered the clutch hit with a two-out, RBI single in the sixth inning, as the fi fth-ranked Bruins opened their Pac-10 season with a 1-0 victory over top-ranked Washington on Thursday at the Husky Softball Stadium. The short-handed Bruins, playing without injured starters Andrea and Monica Harrison, Megan Langenfeld and Katie Schroeder, won their 13th in a row to improve to 27-4 overall. The Huskies fall to 28-3 with the loss. Yudin and freshman Devon Lindvall each had two hits, combining for four of the Bruins fi ve hits. Freshman Charlotte Dolan had the other base knock on a single. Kerr improved to 13-1 on the season with the win. She retired the side in order in the third and sixth innings, fanning a pair in the third, fi fth and seventh frames. The Bruins had their fi rst good chance in the top of the second when Yudin and Dolan had back-to-back singles to left with one out. But Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie struck out senior Kaila Shull and sophomore Marti Reed to end the inning. A pair of doubles by Lindvall in the third and fi fth gave the Bruins a pair of runners in scoring position, but they were unable to crack the scoreboard. In the third, the freshman led off the frame with a double to right-center, but with freshman B.B. Bates at the plate, Lindvall was caught too far off the second-base bag following a pitch in the dirt and got picked off by UW catcher Shawna Wright. In the fi fth, Lindvall had a two-out double down the left-fi eld line, but Lawrie fanned Bates to end the threat. The Huskies had a runner at third with two outs in the bottom of the fi rst following a two-out bunt single by Jenn Salling, who also stole second and advanced to third on an error. But Kerr induced Lawrie into a pop up to short to end the inning. In the fourth, Salling was at fi rst following a leadoff walk and Niki Williams put a scare into the Bruins with a deep fl y ball to center, but with her back against the wall 220 feet away from home plate, Lindvall made the catch to keep the Huskies off the board. The Bruins broke the scoreless tie with a two-out run in the sixth. Sophomore Samantha Camuso started the inning with a walk and was pinch-run for by junior Grace Murray, who moved to second on a sacrifi ce by junior GiOnna DiSalvatore and to third on a groundout by senior Julie Burney. Yudin then came through in the clutch, singling through the right side on a 3-2 pitch to put the Bruins up 1-0. UCLA had a chance to extend its lead in the seventh, but left the bases loaded. With one out, Reed and Lindvall drew consecutive walks and Bates reached on a fi elder s choice when Salling failed to hold on to a throw at third base from Lawrie on a ball hit back to the circle. But Lawrie got Camuso on a strikeout and DiSalvatore on a groundout to end the inning. The Huskies made things interesting in the seventh, but the Bruins held on for the victory with a wild ending. Williams singled to left to start the inning, and one out later, Hooch Fagaly walked and was pinch-run for by Bailey Stenson. After Kerr struck out pinch-hitter Jenna Clifton for the second out of the inning, Amanda Fleischman reached on an infi eld single to second to load the bases. Kimi Pohlman then grounded a ball to shortstop, but Stenson collided with DiSalvatore in the base path. 10 UCLA SOFTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE APRIL 6, 2010 PAGE 10 KELLY INOUYE-PEREZ 4TH YEAR AS HEAD COACH 17TH YEAR AT UCLA UCLA, 1993 RECORD: Kelly Inouye-Perez begins her fourth season as the head coach of the UCLA softball program in Inouye-Perez owns a career record (.778 winning percentage) and led the Bruins to a Pacifi c-10 Conference Championship in 2009, as UCLA went overall and 16-5 in league play. She was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year and earned her 100th career victory on Feb. 22 against Maryland. In 2008, the Bruins went 51-9 and advanced to the Women s College World Series, fi nishing second in the Pac-10 with a 17-4 record. In her fi rst season at the helm of UCLA in 2007, Inouye-Perez posted a overall record and a 12-9 Pac-10 mark (t-3rd). Over Inouye-Perez s three seasons, the Bruins have earned nine All-American awards, 15 All-Region honors and 25 All-Pac-10 accolades. Inouye-Perez, just the third head coach in UCLA softball history, offi cially took over the reins from Sue Enquist on Jan. 1, Enquist announced her retirement as head coach on Sept. 26, No stranger to the Bruin dugout, Inouye-Perez starts her 22nd-straight season in Westwood in She is a link to four decades of Bruin softball success, joining the UCLA softball program as a freshman in Inouye-Perez s apprenticeship is highlighted by six NCAA Championships and eight Pac-10 titles in her previous 21 years, spending fi ve campaigns as a player and 13 as an assistant coach. Over Inouye-Perez s 13 seasons ( ) as an assistant coach, UCLA was (.804) and appeared in the NCAA title game seven times, winning the NCAA Championship in the 1999, 2003 and 2004 seasons. The Bruins also won three Pac-10 titles during that span (1999, 2002, 2006) and in 2004 were named the National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Inouye-Perez s primary responsibility as an assistant coach was guiding the Bruin pitchers and catchers, a list which includes many of the most honored and recognizable names in collegiate softball. Behind the dish, where Inouye-Perez also starred as a three-time All-Pac-10 honoree during her playing days at UCLA, she helped mold and infl uence arguably the best catcher in the history of USA Softball in Stacey Nuveman. Under Inouye-Perez s tutelage, Nuveman became a three-time Pac-10 Player of the Year, four-time, fi rst-team All-American and the NCAA s all-time single season and career home run leader. Since the Pac-10 Conference began issuing a Pitcher of the Year Award, UCLA has been honored with two winners, Courtney Dale in 1999 and Keira Goerl in Among the other pitching highlights accomplished by the Bruins over her 13 years as an assistant included at least one All-American award earned by a UCLA pitcher in 12 of those campaigns, including DeeDee Weiman, four-time Olympian Tanya Harding and two-time Olympian Amanda Freed. In addition, nearly every UCLA pitching record has been set during the time Inouye-Perez has overseen the Bruin battery and the top four pitchers on UCLA s career wins list, Goerl, Selden, Freed and B Ann Burns, were coached by her. Inouye-Perez was an exceptionally strong fi elder behind the dish for the Bruins. She made her mark immediately as a collegiate player, earning fi rst-team All-Pac-10 as a true freshman and second-team as a sophomore, leading the Bruins to the 1989 and 1990 NCAA Championships before receiving a medical redshirt in 1991 due to shoulder surgery. She came back strong in 1992, picking up second-team All-Pac-10 honors as the Bruins once again won the national championship and fi nished with a 54-2 record, the fewest losses in a season in program history. Inouye-Perez also was named to the 1992 All-Women s College World Series Team, going 5-for-12 (.417) with four RBI during WCWS play. She wrapped up her career as a fi fth-year senior in 1993 with an NCAA runner-up fi nish. Impressively, Inouye-Perez did not commit a single fi elding error during her fi nal two seasons. Among the UCLA pitchers during her fi ve seasons as a player were Lisa Longaker and Lisa Fernandez, both of whom were named to the NCAA s 25th Anniversary All-WCWS Team. During her UCLA career, Inouye-Perez played in 22 Women s College World Series games, a mark that is tied for third-best in UCLA history behind only Lisa Fernandez and Kristy Howard (23). Inouye-Perez graduated from UCLA in 1993 with a B.A. in psychology. Prior to college, Inouye-Perez was one of the top players during her ASA days, winning four national championships, with the Panthers (1984, `85 and `89) and the Raiders (1986). She also competed on an international level in Japan in 1985 and in Peru in 1987 (Pan American Tournament) and followed her collegiate career with time playing on the NPF Pro Tour. Inouye-Perez and her husband, Gerardo Perez, currently reside in Cerritos. Along with Kelly s exploits on the diamond, Gerardo competed as a catcher/dh for Cerritos College from and helped lead the Falcons to the 1989 Junior College National Championship. After a stellar career at Cerritos, he went on to compete at Loyola Marymount, earning fi rst-team All-West Coast Conference honors his junior and senior seasons. He currently teaches health and coaches baseball at Gahr High School in Cerritos. The couple has two children, Michael (10) and Kylie (5).
