Scouting No. 17/16 Arizona The Wildcats rank No. 17 by the NFCA this week and No. 16 by ESPN/USA Softball. They are 23-9 overall and 0-3 in road games. They are 2-4 in the Pac-12, getting swept by ASU on opening weekend and then taking two of three from Stanford last week. They also won a mid-week doubleheader vs. San Diego State. Brigette Del Ponte is the team leader batting.351 with 34 hits and a.753 slugging percentage. Shelby Pendley is the home run leader with 12 and Karissa Buchanan is on the base paths. In the circle, both Shelby Babcock and Kenzie Fowler return. Babcock is 12-6 with a 2.22 ERA in innings. Fowler is 9-3 with a 2.87 ERA and 115 strikeouts in 87.2 innings. Arizona leads the overall series and won two of three last year in Arizona. New Parking/Gate Information For Home Games Due to construction at Husky Stadium, fans attending 2012 UW softball games will have a different entrance for the outfield GA seating. For opening weekend Saturday and Sunday of the Husky Softball Classic, fans wishing to sit in the outfield bleachers must purchase tickets at the make ticket box near the main gate and enter through the East Field Entrance out past center field. In the future, the Husky Ticket Office hopes to have tickets for purchase at the new entrance as well. The rates for parking this year during games has also changed. For weekday games the cost is $7 after 5 p.m. Before 5 p.m. the cost in E12 is $15 and $10 in E1. For weekend games, they cost will be $7 in all lots. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I head coaches and fans who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. Fans can vote ONCE PER DAY until May 14 at: Williams, a two-time All-American, is the fifth Washington player in softball history to be selected and is one of only four candidates from the Pac-12 this season. Jenn Salling was a top-10 finalist and a Second-Team Lowe's Senior CLASS Award All-American in The Mission Viejo, Calif., native has been a big contributing factor in each of her three seasons at UW. She is a two-time All-Pac-10 Conference and All-Pacific region selection, two-time NFCA All-American, and was a member of the 2009 National Championship team, where she was named to the Women's College World Series All-Tournament team after setting WCWS records for RBI in a game and series, and was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team. She also was named to the "Watch List" for the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School (CLASS), it focuses on the complete student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award winner during the 2012 NCAA Women's College World Series, which will be held May 31-June 6 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. No. 1/1 Cal Takes Series From UW UW's first Pac-12 road trip to No. 1/1 Cal didn't quite go the way UW had planned, being swept by the Golden Bears. The Huskies had a 1-0 lead in game one on Friday entering the seventh and needing just one out, Cal hit a two-rbi single to left to take the game. Saturday's game was rained out so the two played a doubleheader on Sunday and UW rallied in the seventh in both games but it wasn't enough. Kaitlin Inglesby led the Huskies at the plate on the weekend and Bryana Walker pitched 3.0 scoreless innings in relief. First-Ever Pac-12 Series Goes To UW In the first-ever Pac-12 series, UW swept newcomer Utah, 3-0, with wins of 5-1, 6-1 and 3-1. Kaitlin Inglesby led the team at the plate batting.667 with six hits, one double, two home runs, eight RBI and a1.444 slugging percentage. In the circle, Kasey Stanchek went 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA and nine strikeouts in 11.0 innings, allowing just one earned run. Inglesby Named Pac-12/National Player Of The Week Husky sophomore p/dp, Kaitlin Inglesby, earned her first Pac-12 and ESPN Softball Collegiate Player of the Week honor for her play in the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. She helped the Huskies to a 4-0 record and a five-inning run rule victory over then-no. 24/25 DePaul. She led the team with a.692 average, four runs, nine hits, three doubles, a home run, nine RBI, a slugging percentage, no strikeouts, a.692 on base percentage and a perfect fielding percentage. She also went 2-0 in the circle with a save. Huskies Sweep DH At CSUB UW improved to 29-1 on the year with a doubleheader sweep at Cal State Bakersfield on Monday. UW won by games in five-innings, 12-0 and Sophomore Bryana Walker got the win in game one while Inglesby got the win in game two. Freshman Kylee Lahners led UW in the series hitting.800 with three runs, four hits, two doubles, four RBI and a slugging percentage. Freshman Kasey Stanchek pitched 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit. UW Goes 4-0 at Judi Garman Classic UW went a perfect 4-0 in the final pre-season tournament in Fullerton, Calif. Saturday's game vs. No. 7/7 Oklahoma got rained out, but UW had two wins on Thursday vs. UC Davis and Iowa then dropped Notre Dame and No. 24/25 DePaul on Friday. Coach Tarr Milestones Head coach Heather Tarr picked up her 200th career victory with a win over San Diego State in 2010 and picked up win No. 250 at the Aztecs' home field over Northwestern in In the first game of the Husky Softball Classic this season with a win over Seattle U, Tarr picked up her 300th career victory. Fagaly Has Huge Weekend In Husky Softball Classic UW won its season-opening tournament, going 4-0 against Seattle U and North Dakota. Sophomore Hooch Fagaly had her biggest weekend after coming back from tearing her ACL last season. She hit over.700 and led the team in RBI and hit her first home run of the season. Pohlman & Williams Selected In NPF Senior Draft Kimi Pohlman and Nikia Williams became the sixth and seventh players in UW history to be selected in the NPF Senior Draft on March 7. Pohlman became the highestever Husky selected with the No. 2 overall pick by the Chicago Bandits. Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was the 16th overall pick and the fourth pick of the fourth round by the USSSA Florida Pride. Both Pohlman and Williams were members of the 2009 UW national championship team and have earned numerous all-conference, all-region and All-American honors. She ranks in the top 10 all-time in school history in stolen bases, on base percentage, batting average and hit by pitch. Williams, a utility player for the Huskies, ranks in the top 10 all-time in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage and on base percentage. She was also a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award nominee this season. UW's Jenn Salling was the highest-ever player selected from UW before this year, being drafted No. 3 overall by the USSSA Pride last season. Salling along with former Huskies Ashley Charters and Danielle Lawrie all play for the USSSA Florida Pride. Charters was drafted in 2009 by the Rockford Thunder as the 11th overall pick and the first pick of the third round. Aimee Minor was the second pick of the third round in 2006 to Connecticut. Kristen Rivera was the sixth overall pick in the first round to the Texas Thunder in Tia Bollinger was the 32nd overall pick in the fifth round to the Akron Racers in The 2012 NPF College Draft was dominated by seven selections from the PAC-12 Conference. Of the seven choices there were two each at the University of Washington, UCLA, and Cal. Arizona State was represented with one selection. The SEC, which dominated the 2011 Draft fell into a not-so-close second place with four players selected. Brittany Mack was the No. 1 overall pick by the Pride out of LSU. Walker Throws No-Hitter In Louisville Slugger Classic UW went 5-0 for the third tournament this season, winning its second pre-season tournament, the Louisville Slugger Invitational hosted by Pacific in Stockton, Calif. UW defeated Pacific twice, Sacramento State once and Delaware twice on the way to the championship. In the first-ever game between UW and Delaware, sophomore pitcher Bryana Walker threw her first career no-hitter. Walker allowed just three base runners, one that was walked, one that got hit by a pitch and another on a Husky error in 5.0 innings. It was the 27th no-hitter in UW history and the first by a pitcher on the current Husky roster. The last UW no-hitter came from Danielle Lawrie who threw an 8-0 no-hitter vs. Stanford on May 7, It is the first non-conference no-hitter since Lawrie took out Auburn 5-0 on March 11, Senior Nikia Williams also had a huge weekend, being named one of the top performers of the week by the NFCA after batting.533 with six runs, eight hits, two doubles, a triple, a home run, 10 RBI, a slugging percentage and a.611 on base percentage. Huskies Take Down Four Top 25 Teams In Cathedral City UW went to the Cathedral City Classic undefeated and ready to face five Top 25 teams. The Huskies were impressive on the week, handing No. 1 Florida its first loss of the season in the 5-2 victory. UW also defeated No. 16 Texas A&M (8-2), No. 13 Georgia (7-5) and No. 22 Nebraska (6-3). UW's only loss was a 2-0 game to No. 11 Missouri. GoHuskies.com Honors Inglesby For her performance in the Cathedral City Classic, Kaitlin Inglesby was named the GoHuskies.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb Inglesby went 3-0 in the circle, picking up wins over No. 1 Florida, No. 16 Texas A&M and No. 22 Nebraska. At the plate, she led UW in RBI and was one of the top overall hitters on the weekend. She also was named Pitcher of the Week and Pac-12 Player of the Week by College Softball Madness. UW Improves To 10-0 With Wins In San Diego The Huskies spent the second weekend of the season at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego, hosted by USD and SDSU. UW went a perfect 5-0 with wins over UCF, UCSB, Boise State, USD and UC Davis. Freshman Kasey Stanchek was impressive in the circle, going 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA in three starts with one complete game shutout. Kaitlin Inglesby went 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA and Bryana Walker had two saves in the five games. At the plate, Jerrin Fa'asua led UW with a.556 average. Kimi Pohlman hit.500 with six runs, nine hits, three RBI and sixfor-six stealing bases. Inglesby also hit.500 with a team-high seven RBI and a.833 slugging percentage. Huskies Named Co-Champs Of Kajikawa Classic UW opened the 2012 season as co-champs of the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz., Feb UW, along with New Mexico, was one of two teams out of the 28 in attendance to go 5-0. The Huskies were led by junior catcher Shawna Wright on the weekend. In the circle, sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby went 3-0 with a save and a 1.50 ERA. UW defeated No. 21 Nebraska in game one with a 4-0 shutout. The Huskies also defeated San Jose State (9-4), Idaho State (10-2, 5 innings), Northwestern (10-3) and Texas State (12-3, 6 innings). Inglesby Named Pac-12 Pitcher Of The Week/NFCA POW Sophomore pitcher Kaitlin Inglesby was named Pac-12 Softball Pitcher of the Week for February 6-12, Commissioner Larry Scott announced. Just hours after she earned Pac-12 honors, the NFCA announced that Inglesby was the National Player of the Week. Inglesby picked up where she left off her freshman year, leading the Huskies to a perfect 5-0 record and the co-championship of the Kajikawa Classic. Inglesby went 3-0 in the circle with two complete games, one save and a 1.17 ERA. She allowed just three earned runs in 18.0 innings, struck out 14 and held opponents to a.169 average. In the season opener against No. 21 Nebraska, Inglesby had a complete game shutout with five strikeouts as the Huskies won 4-0. Not only was Inglesby impressive in the circle but at the plate she hit.400 with four runs, six hits, three home runs, six RBIs, a slugging percentage, three walks and no strikeouts. This is Inglesby's second career Pitcher of the Week honor and Washington's 83rd award. Pohlman And Williams Named To Top 50 Player Of The Year Watch List Washington seniors Kimi Pohlman and Nikia Williams were among 50 players named to the "Watch List" for the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, announced Wednesday by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America. Pohlman, a two-time First-Team All-Pac-10 and three-time All-Pacific Region, was previously named to the Watch List in her sophomore season. The Sammamish, Wash., native started in 52 of 53 games in 2011 and had the team highest overall at-bats (183), runs scored (57), hits (79) and batting average (.432), which ranks sixth in the Husky single-season record book. She owned a.536 slugging percentage and hit three home runs, two in a single game and one of which was an inside the park home run. The left-handed outfielder continued her success in stealing bases, swiping 25 of 29 bases last season, which put her in the Husky all-time record book ranked eighth in career stolen bases (67-75), not to mention she is tied for fourth in batting average (.379) and 10th in on-base percentage (.424). She also had a 10-game hitting streak and broke a 9.0 consecutive scoreless innings for Missouri pitcher Chelsea Thomas in the NCAA Super Regional. Williams, a First-Team All-Pac-10 and All-Pacific Region last year, was a top 25 finalist for this very award last season. In 2011, she was a Second-Team NFCA All-American, named to the Seattle Regional All-Tournament team and invited to the National Team training camp. She was also a member of the USA Softball Futures team in The Mission Viejo, Calif., native started in all 53 games and batted.364 with 56 hits in 154 at-bats, recording 42 runs, 12 doubles, one triple. She led the team in home runs (14) and RBIs (56) with a.727 slugging percentage, which ranks her in the top 10 in the Husky career records for those categories. In game one of a doubleheader against Cal State Bakersfield (3/22), she hit a two-out solo home run and was a triple shy of the cycle. She also had 327 putouts, the most on the team. The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. The only Husky to win this prestigious individual honor was All-American pitcher Danielle Lawrie, winning it twice in 2009 and The pre-season "Watch List" includes 23 seniors, 20 juniors and seven sophomores, with freshman ineligible for consideration. (Freshman can be considered for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award once they have competed at the collegiate level). Athletes named to the "Watch List" represent 31 NCAA Division I universities and 13 athletic conferences. The Pac-12 has six member schools represented. The Top 25 Finalists for the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 11. While an athlete does not have to be on the "Watch List" to be considered for the Top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25 Finalists. The Top 10 Finalists will be announced May 9 and the Top 3 Finalists will be announced May 23. On May 29 prior to the start of the 2012 NCAA Women's College World Series (WCWS) in Oklahoma City, the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed. Huskies Picked Sixth In Pre-Season Pac-12 Poll The first-ever Pac-12 Pre-Season Coaches Poll has been announced and the defending champion Arizona State was nearly the unanimous No. 1 pick. Cal came in second, followed by Arizona, UCLA, Stanford, Washington, Oregon, Oregon State and Pac-12 newcomer Utah. Colorado does not sponsor a softball team. UW was picked sixth with 30 total points, just eight points behind No. 5 Stanford. The Pac-12 has kept records of the coaches poll dating back to Last season, UW was picked to tie for fourth with Cal and was picked first in 2010 after winning the 2009 national championship. In 2011, UW posted a overall record and a 9-12 Pac-10 record. UW won conference series' last year against Oregon, Oregon State and Cal. The last time the Huskies faced Utah was in 2010 with decisive 8-0 victory. Huskies Vs. Sun Devils To Air On FSN The Pac-12 Conference has announced the TV broadcast schedule for 2012 and Fox Sports Net has chosen three collegiate softball games to televise during the 2012 season, as part of their agreement with the Pac-12 conference, and the Huskies have received the honor of being chosen for one of these three games. Arizona State at Washington will take place on Friday, April 27 at 6 p.m. PT and will be televised at a time and date, TBD, soon after the contest. The network will also air California at Stanford, taking place on Friday, March 23 at 7 p.m. PT and Arizona at UCLA, which will be played on Friday, May 4 at 7 p.m. PT. Steve Physioc is tentatively scheduled to provide play-by-play for the games. Physioc has most recently served as the play-by-play announcer for local telecasts of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Olympic gold and silver medalist Jessica Mendoza and Olympic gold medalist Amanda Freed will likely provide analysis for the games. Season Debuts With their win in their season-opening game against No. 21 Northwestern on Feb. 9, the Huskies have won six-consecutive season openers. UW has opened each of its 20 seasons with a multiple-team tournament, accruing a record. The Huskies have gone undefeated in eight of those tournaments (1996, 2000, '02, '03, '09, '10, '11, '12), including a 5-0 mark in this year's Kajikawa Classic. UW is 16-4 in season openers all-time.
