Freshman Abi Stephens collected her first collegiate triple to go along with her third home run of the year. Stephens also has four doubles and is slugging.595 Junior Courtney Gearlds collected four hits in the double header versus YSU and boosted her team leading average to.378. Tonnay Hawkins leads the squad at.346 and is just behind Garcia with nine runs scored. Hailey Forbes is the work horse for UAPB working 43.1 innings in eight starts and 12 appearances. Forbes is currently 2-5 with 20 strikeouts and a 7.11 ERA.

3 Downtown Abbey Freshman Abi Stephens is off to a hot start for her career driving three balls out of the park. Stephens has added four doubles and a triple. The Bon Aqua, Tenn., native opened the season with 31 at bats before registering her first single. Stephens has 10 hits in 42 at bats and is batting.238, but has a.595 slugging percentage. Last Time in Auburn TSU dropped a 3-2, eight inning ball game, to the Tigers on Feb. 16, Olivia Gamache went the distance scattering five hits and three walks, while fanning three, as she allowed just one earned run. Auburn took advantage of a two-out error in the top of the second that drove in the first run of the game. The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Kacie Daugherty reached on a fielder s choice giving TSU a runner on first with two outs. Daugherty moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Tayler Shimizu single into right center. Auburn scored in the eighth on a Tiffany Howard singled up the middle and added another on a Morgan Estell double and a Branndi Melero groundout. TSU would get one back as Daugherty singled to plate Brianna Roberts, but left two runners. Welcome Back... Seniors Lindsey Burgess and Lauren Dreitlein returned to the Tiger lineup after missing the first weekend of the season. Sophomore Cariona Hassell sat the first two weeks, but has returned to the field putting the Tigers at full force on the field. Senior Taylor Green is the lone Tiger not to see any action in Green looks to have season ending surgery. Making the Grade Tiger Softball accounted for 19 of the 128 student-athletes who were recognized by the Athletic Department for their excellence in the classroom during the fall semester. The 19 was the second highest of the 11 teams at TSU, behind football who placed 43 members. Softball posted a 3.45 team GPA and trailed only Women s golf (3.53) and men s tennis (3.51). To be recognized, the student-athletes had to maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher during the 2015 Fall semester. Invitational Honorees TSU placed three members on the All-Tiger Invitational. Lindsey Burgess also earned adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week honors for her performance during the Invite. Lauren Dreitlein scored four runs, hit two doubles, a home run and plated five while batting.417 (5-for-12). Courtney Gearlds earned her second straight All-Tournament team selection by going 6-for-15 (.400) and recording five runs, two doubles, an RBI and three stolen s. Classic Performance Courtney Gearlds scored four runs, picked up her second triple of the year, drove in a run, earned three walks, was hit by a pitch, swiped three bases and tallied a.412 On Base Percentage to earn a spot on the All-Tiger Classic team. Freshman Lauren Powell made the squad by tossing 13.1 innings in three appearances and walked out 1-0 with a 2.62 ERA and held opponents to a.222 average. Hello, My Name Is... The Tigers enter the season with 14 newcomers. The new additions include 11 freshmen and three transfers. A year ago, TSU brought in 11 new players. Reunited Sophomores Kasey Cox and Whitney Ennis are friends from Indiana and have transferred to TSU this season from separate institutions. Ennis spent her freshman campaign at IPFW. Cox came to TSU at the break from Indian River CC (Fla.). A Familiar Face Junior College transfer Lauren Woodard will make her Tiger debut two years after signing a National Letter of Intent to play for TSU in Woodard chose to go the junior college route after graduation and spent two seasons at Volunteer (Vol) State. Let s Team Up... Again Lauren Dreitlein and Taylor Green will begin their second season together at TSU after spending a year together at Walters State CC as sophomores. Chelsea Buchanan played the 2015 season at TSU with former high school teammate Amber Galyon In 2016 Buchanan will be joined by former East Hickman High School teammates Abi Stephens and Maddy Clark. Let s Get it Started The Tigers claimed a 10-2 victory over Mississippi Valley State in the season opener to improve TSU s opening game record to 9-14 all-time in season. The first eight seasons in program history began with losses, but TSU is 9-6 over the last 15 years. TSU fell to Incarnate Word 3-2 in The Tigers previous opening game win came in 2014 with a 3-2 win over East Tennessee State. White Jerseys / Blue Pants Blue Jerseys / White Pants Camofluge Jerseys / White Pants HEAD COACH TOM OPDENBROUW SECOND SEASON SUNY ONEONTA, 1996 Tom Opdenbrouw was named the fifth head softball coach at Tennessee State in May Opdenbrouw has spent the last four seasons as the Director of Operations for the TSU football program. Prior to his stint with the Tigers, he served as an assistant softball coach for two seasons under Joyce Maudie. During his time as football s director of operations, Opdenbrouw also served as the an assistant softball coach at Ensworth High School and head coach at Nashville Christian School. Opdenbrouw came to TSU after holding the head coach position at perennial NAIA power, Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. Opdenbrouw left the Blue Raiders after posting over 200 wins. He guided LWC to three consecutive 30-plus win seasons over the last three years. Under his tutelage, the Blue Raiders won two Mid-South Conference Championships in addition to two runner-up finishes. LWC earned three bids to the Regional phase of the NAIA National Championships. Opdenbrouw s commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom is evident in his coaching of 14 Regional All-Stars, 42 Mid- South Conference All-Stars, 10 Disney Academic All-Americans, and 67 MSC Conference All-Academic team members. Prior to his post with Lindsey Wilson, Opdenbrouw served as an assistant coach for the NCAA III SUNY Utica/ Rome softball team in Utica, N.Y. Opdenbrouw helped the Wildcats set their school record for wins. In addition to his coaching duties, he served as the recruiting coordinator for all women s sports and as the athletic academic coordinator for at-risk students. Opdenbrouw s first collegiate coaching experience was garnered at SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, NY. He was an assistant for six years as the Red Dragons became one of the NCAA s most successful programs of the 1990 s. They won the NCAA National Statistical Award for double plays turned in a single season in 1994 as well as the school s first ever New York State Collegiate Championship. His passion for the game earned him a coaching position representing the United States in a good will tour against the top teams of Australia in Prior to college, Opdenbrouw served in the US Army where his performance was highly decorated. His experience includes tours in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, as well as the unification of Germany. Opdenbrouw, originally from Hyde Park, New York, earned a bachelor s degree in elementary education with a speech communication concentration along with a New York state coaching certification from SUNY Oneonta in Opdenbrouw and his wife Jenny reside in Nashville with their three daughters, Sarah, Hannah and Leah
