They had won seven out of nine games before being swept in a doubleheader at Dayton on Saturday, 5-4 and 2-0. La Salle s other conference games were a split of a doubleheader at George Washington back on March 17. La Salle heads across town to take on Penn in a doubleheader on Wednesday before hosting UMass on Thursday. Senior Gina Massaro leads the Explorers both at the plate and in the circle. The 5-7 righthander is the team s top hitter with a.341 batting average and is the pitching staff ace, going 3-2 with a 1.42 ERA this far in Junior DJ Guinn has also seen innings in the circle, going 3-2 with a 2.21 ERA. Senior third baseman Mary Pat Conville and junior shortstop Ali Shephard are both batting over.300 for the Explorers, while senior first baseman Angelina Bisbiglia has been the power bat, slugging three home runs and driving in 16. UMass is a perfect 31-0 all-time against La Salle, including a sweep last season on May 1-2 (5-0 and 8-0). SCOUTING FORDHAM The Rams come into the week with a 23-6 overall record and a 2-0 mark in A-10 play after sweeping Dayton, 11-0 and 10-3, last weekend. Fordham is receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls. It has won 11 of its last 12, with a 4-3 loss to Pitt on March 20. Fordham hosts St. John s on Wednesday and hosts Rhode Island in a doubleheader on Thursday before playing UMass. As a team, Fordham leads the A-10 in many offensive categories, including batting average (.297), home runs (27), and runs (161). Senior outfielder Erin Fisher leads the team with a.400 average and 10 home runs. Her 29 RBIs sit second on the team to Beckah Wiggins 36. The junior second baseman is batting.394 with eight homers. Freshman first baseman Jamie LaBovick and junior third baseman Jocelyn Dearborn are both batting over.330 with three home runs and 16 RBIs each. Sophomore Jen Mineau has been one of the top pitchers in the country in The righthander is 17-3 on the season with a 0.67 ERA. Her 245 strikeouts are third-most in the country behind Troy s Ashlyn Williams (257) and UMass Sara Plourde (251). UMass is 37-3 all-time against Fordham. The Minutewomen took two of three from the Rams last season, splitting a regular season doubleheader at the UMass Softball Complex and defeating Fordham, 5-1, in the A-10 Tournament at Bahoshy Field. BACK-TO-BACK NO-NO S AT GW Everything was clicking for UMass in its Atlantic 10-opening doubleheader at George Washington (4-17, 1-5 A-10) on Sunday afternoon as Sara Plourde and Bailey Sanders combined to pitch a perfect game in a 17-0 five-inning win in game one and Plourde allowed just one base-runner in an 11-0 five-inning no-hitter in game two. The offense pounded out 28 hits on the day, led by Sarah Reeves six hits. Plourde, the nation s strikeout leader, struck out seven batters in four innings and Sanders came in to strike out the side in fifth inning to record the 11th perfect game in UMass history in game one. It was the first combined perfect game in school history and UMass first perfect game since Brandice Balschmiter against Sacred Heart in the NCAA Regionals on May 16, The last time two UMass pitcher combined for a no-hitter was on March 30, 2004 when Kelli Arnold and Barb LaFogg no-hit Central Connecticut. Reeves tied one the longest standing school-records in game one with five hits, going 5-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. The senior tied the record of Gina Mantino (1982) and Ilene Freeman (1988). In game two, Reeves blasted a grand slam to left field, her fourth homer of the season and UMass first grand slam of the year, to give her seven runs driven in on the day. Carly Normandin was 5-for-7 on the day with three RBIs and four runs scored to raise her teamleading batting average to.467 for the 2009 All-American. Besides Reeves, Katie Bettencourt and Meghan Carta each hit home runs for the Minutewomen, both opposite field shots, their second and third of the year, respectively. Bettencourt finished 3-for-5 on the day with three walks, five RBIs, and five runs scored, while Carta was 4-for-6 with six runs driven in and three runs. Freshman Teea Rogers was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and four runs scored, while classmate Cyndil Matthew was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs. UMASS IN THE NATIONAL POLLS UMass moved up a spot in this week s USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll to No. 23. The Minutewomen continue to receive votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, with eight, after falling out of the poll four weeks ago. UMass highest ranking of the season came on Feb. 16 when it ranked No. 18 after going 4-1 on the opening weekend of the season in Miami. The Minutewomen opened the season ranked in both major national preseason polls. UMass ranked No. 20 with 199 votes in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll, while ranking No. 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Preseason Poll. UMass was the only team from the northeast ranked to start the season. UMass finished the 2009 season ranked No. 14 in both polls. 2

3 MINUTEWOMEN A 10 IN THE A-10 The 2010 Atlantic 10 preseason softball poll was released on Jan. 19 and the UMass softball team has been picked to win its sixth-straight conference championship. The coaches predicted the Minutewomen to finish first, ahead of second-place Charlotte and third-place Fordham. UMass will host the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship on May at the UMass Softball Complex. On May 9, 2009, UMass routed Saint Joseph s, 11-0 in five innings, to win the program s 21st Atlantic 10 Championship. Brandice Balschmiter earned her fourth-straight Most Outstanding award, tying Danielle Henderson s record. Whitney Mollica, Sarah Reeves, Jessica Serio, and Whitney Williams joined Balschmiter on the All-Tournament team. The conference title is UMass fifth-straight and 14th in the last 15 years. UMass boasts a (.891) record all-time in A-10 games and led the conference in 2009 in team batting average (.307) and pitching ERA (1.30). This year s senior class has a 56-2 record in regular season A-10 games. FRESH FACES FOR 2010 UMass welcomes four new players in 2010, three true freshman and one redshirt. The class is representative of a shift towards more speed and defense for the Minutewomen, making them a more balanced attack across the board in Redshirt freshman Tawny Palmieri comes into the season with a year in the UMass softball program under her belt already. A good defensive player with an improved bat this spring, she will look to contribute on the infield. The left-handed batter starred at Peabody Veteran Memorial (Peabody, Mass.) where she hit.513 as a senior. Christine Della Vecchia is a dynamic infielder from Stratford, Conn. She brings quickness to the middle infield and her speed makes her a definite threat as a lefty slapper and base-runner. Della Vecchia was a three-time All-State performer at St. Joseph High where she hit.544 her senior season. The movement towards speed continues for the Minutewomen with the addition of Cyndil Matthew. The Westfield, N.J. native brings some of the best speed UMass has seen in years to the outfield and at the plate on the left side. Another threat to slap, bunt, and steal, Matthew hit.642 for Westfield last season with 20 home runs. Teea Rogers is another player that symbolizes the new look of the Minutewomen. A slick-fielding third baseman with a strong and accurate arm, she was an All-State shortstop as a senior in high school and, along with Palmieri, will look to step into the vacated third base role. The Eugene, Oregon native is also formidable at the plate, owning several high school records for slugging percentage, home runs, and RBI. In high school she once hit a home run that traveled 370 feet. ABOVE THE NORM Carly Normandin, now in her senior season and serving as co-captain, is leading the team with a.467 batting average (21-45). Though she is three at-bats short of qualifying, her.467 average would currently lead the A-10. Returning to hitting fulltime at the USF Under Armour Invitational (3/5-7), Normandin picked right up where she UMASS CAREER BATTING AVG Barb Marean ( ) Jackie Gaw ( ) Carly Normandin ( ) Kim Gutridge ( ) Sheri Kuchinskas ( ) left off last season, batting.500 (8-16) in her return from a back injury. She had just one at-bat on the season prior to that and had started three games in center field, but was DPed for. Normandin entered her senior season in 2010 looking to finish her career with a bang. Showing drastic improvement each season, she reached new heights last year by being named Atlantic 10 of the Year and NFCA All-American Third Team, while repeating as an All-Region First Team selection. She joined teammate Brandice Balschmiter as the first UMass NFCA All-Americans since Emily Robustelli in It was the first time UMass had multiple All-Americans since Kim Gutridge and Danielle Henderson in Normandin was UMass first outfield All-American since Sally Maher in She finished with a.403 batting average, the highest by a UMass player since Gutridge s.404 mark in 1998, and had a 23-game hitting streak. She did it all for the Minutewomen offensively, hitting 17 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs, 37 RBI, 53 runs, 21 stolen bases, and a.727 slugging percentage, all while playing stellar defense in center field. The Gardner, Mass. native led the Atlantic 10 in average, slugging, hits (71), runs, doubles, and total bases (128). She ranked in the top-20 nationally in doubles (13th), triples (17th), and runs (17th). THE NATION IS WATCHING The Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA), the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, named UMass senior centerfielder Carly Normandin to its initial Watch List for the 9th Annual USA Softball National Collegiate of the Year Award. The 2009 Atlantic 10 of the Year and Second Team All-American is one of 50 players on the list that was released on Jan. 27. This award, which is considered the most prestigious honors in Division I women s collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. The 2010 Pre-Season Watch List is comprised of 50 players representing 35 schools and 14 different NCAA Division I Conferences. The list includes 27 seniors, 17 juniors and six sophomores. Just days before the start of post-season play, a list of 10 finalists will be named and released on May 12. The final three finalists will be announced May 26 while the winner of the 2010 USA Softball National Collegiate of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the 2010 NCAA Women s College World Series in Oklahoma City. For the third year in a row, Sarah Reeves is helping anchor the middle of the UMass lineup. The senior first baseman, who smacked 10 home runs each of the last two seasons, is tied with Michelle Libby for the team lead this season with four and leads UMass with 19 runs driven in. Reeves was named Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team and All-Championship for two years in a row. The Elkton, Md. native tied a school record with five hits, going 5-for-5 in game one of a twinbill at GW (3/28) and then hit a grand slam in game two, giving her seven RBIs on the day. Reeves got her 2010 season off to an incredible start by batting.571 (8-14) with four doubles, a home run, four RBIs, and a slugging percentage. She was named the Atlantic 10 s first of the Week of the season on Feb. 15. Along with her 10 bombs each of the last two seasons, Reeves has been an incredibly consistent run-producer as well, driving in 38 runs in 2008 and 39 runs in 2009, while slugging over.500 both years. She has started 111 straight games at first base, committing just six errors in over 800 chances. Reeves, a co-captain with Normandin, currently stands seventh in career home runs at UMass with 24. Next on the list are Brandi Cross and Scooter Wheeler tied for fifth with 26. LIBBY MOVES TO GREENER PASTURES Senior Michelle Libby, after serving mostly as a DP and reserve third baseman last season, makes the move to the outfield in 2010, where she playing a prominent role. She is tied with Sarah Reeves for the team lead in home runs with four, while hitting.306 with 16 RBIs. The Porter, Maine native has started all 24 games, 19 in left field and and five at third base got off to a great start for Libby at the FIU Combat Classic (2/12-14), batting.533 (8-15) with two home runs and six RBI. Libby enjoyed a breakout year in 2009, finishing fourth on the team in batting average at.314. She had nine doubles, three home runs, and 18 RBI. A fundamental team player, she also was tied for the team lead in sacrifice bunts with seven (Mollica). All of this came after having just one hit in 23 career at-bats the previous two seasons. PLOURDE TAKES OVER THE CIRCLE Sophomore Sara Plourde has gotten off a to a red-hot start in her sophomore campaign, posting a 16-5 record with a 1.12 ERA, and ranks second in the country in strikeouts with 251 in 137 innings. She has been named A-10 Pitcher of the Week three times and was named UMass Athlete of the Week on March 22. In game two, she walked the first batter and retired every batter the rest of the way for the no-hitter. The sophomore struck out a school-record 22 batters in a nine-inning 1-0 loss to No. 22 Texas A&M (3/20). Plourde held the Aggies hitless through 8 2/3 innings, allowing a single with two outs in the ninth that drove in a runner from second with the International Tiebreaker rule in use. At the San Diego Classic II (3/18-21), Plourde pitched all seven games, going 4-3 and striking out 96 batters in 48 1/3 innings. She allowed just four earned runs. She struck out 18 batters, tying Danielle Henderson (three occasions) for the UMass seven-inning single game record. Only three balls were put in play against her in the game. Though she just missed qualifying by 1 1/3 innings pitched, Plourde would have finished third in the A-10 in both ERA (1.83) and opponent batting average (.197) in 2009, behind teammate Brandice Balschmiter and Charlotte s Emily Jeffery. The Bristol, Conn. native threw a no-hitter in her second career start, retiring 18 in a row after hitting the first batter of the game and striking out nine at Dayton on March 22. She was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team in 2009 after going 6-1 with a 1.83 ERA. 4

5 BETTENCOURT BREAKS OUT Sophomore Katie Bettencourt, after seeing just seven at-bats as a freshman, has quickly established herself as one of UMass top bats in She has started every game in right field and is second on the team with a.358 (24-67) batting average. She has four doubles, two home run, and driven in 12 runs. Bettencourt set career-highs with three RBIs and four runs scored in UMass A-10 opening win over GW (3/28). The highlight of Bettencourt s season this far was on Feb. 12 when she hit the first home run of her career, which ended up being the only run scored in UMass 1-0 win over NC State in Miami. The first hit of the Salem, N.H. s career came on the biggest stage she has played on, singling off National of the Year Danielle Lawrie in a pinch-hitting appearance against Washington in the 11th inning of the Minutewomen and Huskies epic 15-inning battle in the 2009 NCAA Amherst Regional Final. She became just the eighth coach in Division I softball history to reach the plateau. On December, 4, 2004, Sortino was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame at its annual convention in Las Vegas, Nev. In 2004, the NFCA also named UMass the 34th-best softball program all-time. Sortino has led UMass to 21 Atlantic 10 Conference titles, 19 NCAA regional appearances and three trips to the NCAA College World Series.
