2 Games / Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament / March 14-16, 2014 / Tampa, Fla. / USF Softball Stadium (1,600) BULLS VS. TOURNEY TEAMS The Bulls take on two more NCAA Tournament teams from last season this weekend when they take on Baylor and Marist at the USF Softball Stadium. So far this season the Bulls are 5-4 against teams that made the tournament last year with wins over James Madison, No. 20 Louisiana-Lafayette, No. 14 Stanford, Central Michigan and Penn. No. 12 Baylor will also be the fifth top 15 ranked team the Bulls have played this season after taking on No. 1 Tennessee, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Michigan and No.14 Stanford earlier this season. DEADLY DUO The Bulls have always been known as a team that will rely heavily on their pitchers and this season is no different. Sara Nevins and Erica Nunn have been extremely effective for the Bulls so far this season, accounting for 19 of the team s 22 victories. They are currently tied for first in the American in opponent batting average (.149) and rank first and third in strikeouts (Nevins / Nunn - 85). The two lefties are also tied for first in the conference with three saves each while Nevins is USF s all-time leader in that category with 20. Nunn was named to the conference honor roll after week one while Nevins won three consecutive Pitcher of the Week awards prior to this week. Thanks to this deadly duo, the Bulls currently lead the American in wins (22), shutouts (11), strikeouts (246) and opponent batting average (.161). DOUBLE TROUBLE Twin sisters Ashli and Courtney Goff have played a major role in the Bulls increase in offensive production this season. Ashli Goff is having a career season for the Bulls, leading the team with a.413 batting average and 31 hits (also first in the American). She also leads the team in stolen bases (eight) and on-base percentage (.482). The speedster from Tampa is on pace to post career highs in batting average, hits, on-base percentage and runs this season. Ashli s twin sister Courtney is also having the best season of her career, batting.360 with nine hits and six runs on 25 games this season. AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE WEEKLY HONORS For the fourth time in five weeks the Bulls had two players honored by the American Athletic Conference as seniors Ashli Goff and Sara Nevins were both named to the conference honor roll this week after leading the Bulls to four more wins last week. Goff continued her hot streak at the plate, leading the team with 12 hits and five runs in six games. She raised her batting average to a team-best.439 and extended her hitting streak to 10 games, the longest by any Bull this season. For Nevins, it was the fourth straight time being represented by the conference after being named the American s top pitcher the past three weeks. She Park posted a 2-2 record with a 1.71 ERA and 24 strikeouts. Her two wins were both complete game one-hit shutouts over Maine and St. Joseph s. She also recorded her second save of the year in the Bulls 7-4 win over Utah. FRESH FACES MAKING AN IMPACT The Bulls have received giant contributions from their seven newcomers this season. Ta coia Williams is tied for second on the team in home runs with six and is also second on the team with 18 runs batted in. Karla Claudio has come on as off late and has a.320 batting average and six RBI this season. Juli Weber is one of nine Bulls with double-digit hits and has started 17 games in center field. Veronica Gajownik ranks second on the team, batting.392 with 10 runs, 20 hits and 11 RBI, including a walk-off single to beat Penn (3/12). Kristen Wyckoff is batting.391 with nine hits and eight runs while sharing time at second with Gajownik. Kassandra Moeller and Susan Wysocki have also made appearances for USF this season MILESTONES ROAD TO OKLAHOMA CITY USF will be looking to get back to the Women s College World Series for the second time in three years in 2014 after being bounced in the NCAA Regionals by Florida last season. The Bulls won their first ever BIG EAST Tournament Championship last year and also made their 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Ken Eriksen has assembled one of the toughest schedules in the nation to prepare his team for a deep tournament run. The Bulls played three Women s College World Series participants from last season in their first 10 games (Florida, Michigan & Tennessee). HOME AWAY FROM HOME The Bulls make their final trip to the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater for an exhibition game against the Netherlands on Saturday. The Bulls second home has traditionally been a place where the team has been extremely successful. Since 2006 the Bulls have amassed a record in Clearwater, including a 6-1 record this season after playing seven games at the Eddie C. Moore Complex as part of the NFCA Lead-Off Classic and USF Under Armour Invitational. WHAT TO WATCH FOR... A number of records are within reach for some USF seniors this season. Stephanie Medina and Kourtney Salvarola both have a chance to break the career home runs record of 33 set by Holly Groves from Salvarola also has a chance to set the all-time RBI record if she can knock in 54 runs this season, which would break Carmela Liwag s mark of 171 from Last but not least, Sara Nevins should easily pass Monica Triner s records in innings pitched (788.0) and also has a chance to become the program s all-time wins leader with 21 victories this season. That would break Triner s record of 92 career wins from ACHIEVEMENTS Last season was another great year for the Bulls as they won their first ever BIG EAST Tournament Championship and advanced to their 11th NCAA Tournament in program history. On top of that Ken Eriksen broke the school s all-time wins record in any sport, passing longtime USF baseball coach Eddie Cardieri, with 732 career victories. Kourtney Salvarola was named first team All-BIG EAST. Lefty ace Sara Nevins broke Monica Triner s career strikeouts record of 641 and finished the year with 804 and counting. Nevins was also named an NFCA All-American for the second straight season as well as BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year. USF SERIES IN CLEARWATER, FLA.
