2 Messalonskee Cal Ripken Baseball League 75 Old Waterville Road Oakland, ME NEW ENGLAND 11 YEAR OLD CAL RIPKEN REGIONAL TOURNAMENT Messalonskee Cal Ripken Baseball League would like to extend a warm welcome to the All Star teams that are participating in the 2009 New England 11 year old Cal Ripken Regional Tournament which is being held at the Mini Fenway Park in Oakland. Messalonskee Cal Ripken Baseball League draws players from the surrounding towns of Belgrade, Oakland, Sidney and Rome which has a combined total population of just over 13,000. We have a proud history of good play and sportsmanship and welcome you to play in the fantastic State of Maine. We have included information in this guide that coaches/parents will need to know regarding accommodations, eating establishments, directions to the field and other pertinent information. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday, August 7th, and, weather permitting, will end on Thursday, August 13 th. The tournament is a double elimination. The Tournament Director will make all decisions regarding weather related issues and game cancellations. The Tournament Director is Larry Carter who resides in Casco, Maine. Larry is Assistant State Commissioner (11 years) and also President of Sebago Long Lake Cal Ripken (16 years). The Assistant Tournament Director is Bernie Gonyaw from Newport, VT. The Tournament Chairpersons are Shawn and Cindy Wilkie who are President & Secretary/Treasurer for Messsalonskee Cal Ripken Baseball League and have been in these positions for over 15 years. Shawn and Cindy is also coach/scorekeeper of the Messalonskee Cal Ripken 11 year old team and have coached for almost 30 years in the league. Lastly, please remember to exhibit good sportsmanship at all times we are all positive role models for our players, parents, coaches, umpires, and fans. We are all teachers of the game of baseball as well as the game of life, be a great example by setting a great example. Let s have fun and play baseball the Cal Ripken way. 3 We will begin on Friday August 7 th with a coaches meeting at the field at 2:00 PM. Teams need to report by 3:00 PM. Ceremonies to begin at 4 PM with a State Flag Parade (remember your state flag please). The ceremonial 1 st pitch will be thrown by Olympic Gold Medalist, Seth Wescott. Skill Drill Competition will immediately follow. Once competition is completed everyone may return to their hotel accommodations for a restful evening to relax. The Mini Fenway Park is located on McGrath Pond Road and is an excellent facility. We are positive that parents and players will be equally excited about performing in such a facility. The complex has a concession building located under the center field bleachers and will be serving the usual baseball fare (hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, water, soda, candy, fries, dough boys, etc.) The concession stand will be open approximately ½ hour prior to the first game of the day and will close shortly after the last game of the day. Please remember that monies raised in the concession and through gate fees help us cover the cost of balls, umpires, trophies and miscellaneous needs in order to put on this tournament. The gate fees will be as follows: $3 per person per day (kids 12 & under free) $15.00 Tournament Pass (per car). Please remember to have your tournament documentation with you to present to the Tournament Director 1 hour prior to your first game. Your tournament documentation will be kept in the press box area for the duration of your stay in the tournament. Pleasant Point field is available for any team wishing to take batting practice prior to their field time at Mini Fenway. Teams must reserve their practice time and a reservation sheet will be kept in the press box at Fenway. Pleasant Point field is located approximately ½ mile before the Fenway Park (on the left side of the road). Pleasant Point has a batting cage and a field available for the teams. Once you finish then proceed on to the Fenway field. The visiting team has the field for fielding practice (10 minutes max) 30 minutes prior to game time. As soon as the visiting team is done the home team will have fielding practice for ten minutes max. Team announcements and the national anthem will be sung. The umpire crew will meet with the team managers just prior to game start. Lineup cards will be available to all teams at the press box prior to games. Please make sure you provide the press box (official scorekeeper), home plate umpire and opposing coach with your lineup. Please make sure your lineup card includes the names and numbers of all players (including your non starters) as well as coaches. Please provide the name of your person for the Protest Committee to the press box prior to the start of your game. The official scorekeeper shall be the official scorer and keep track of all pitching. Each manager must sign off on the pitching after each game. The manager is also responsible to check his opposing teams pitching eligibility before each game. All substitutions MUST be made to the official scorekeeper. Please remember that all coaches are required to be in full uniform. Scorekeepers will not be allowed in the dugouts. During the game all managers/coaches must remain inside the dugout (unless coaching a base). The proper Cal Ripken shoulder emblem must be properly displayed by all teams. 3

4 SKILL DRILL NIGHT To begin after ceremonial 1 st pitch. 1. Throwing Accuracy (2 players) 2. Around the Horn (4 players) 3. Relay Race around the bases (3) 4. Home Run Derby (3) **Coaches will be pitching to their players for the Home Run Derby Competition. Food and drink will be provided to players/coaches/officals on opening ceremony night. Meals may be purchased by parents/fans/siblings at a price of $3.00 each. Please have your team/coaches report to the concession area where they will be happily served. Please note our parking is not ideal for space so we have arranged to shuttle people by bus to the field on Friday, August 7 th only. If you would park your vehicle in the parking lot at the EastGate Apostolic Center on High Street in Oakland a bus will shuttle you to and from the field. PLEASE USE THIS SERVICE. The bus will be at the church at 2:00 PM and will be making back to back runs every 15 minutes or so. Follow the directions as if you were heading to the field. The center will be on your right at the top of High Street. SATURDAY S GAME SCHEDULE AUGUST 8TH 1. 10:00AM Western Massachusetts 2. 1:00PM Rhode Connecticut 3. 4:00PM Eastern New Hampshire 4. 7:00PM Host (Messalonskee) We will also have available a booklet for each family from our local Chamber of Commerce which highlights many of the areas local eateries, hotels, activities, etc... These booklets will be available from the press box upon team arrival, please make sure you contact our tournament personnel or Shawn and Cindy to get your copy. We will also have a binder filled with areas of interest in our great State of Maine. Some of these areas of interest may only be minutes away while others could be 1.5 hours travel time. This binder will be available for you to view at the press box area. Please seek out our tournament personnel or see Shawn and Cindy. Tournament Staff will be dressed in bright green t shirts during the tournament. If you need assistance staff will lead you in the proper direction. Please make sure to comment to our staff now and then as to how we are doing. You may search out Shawn and Cindy Wilkie during the tournament as well, they would love to hear from you all input is welcome. We will have souvenir pins, stickers, banners, baseball paraphernalia all available for you to purchase. Prices will vary from $2.00 $ We have included a t shirt pre order form to save you money & time. Our photographer, Matt Hunt, will be on duty taking tournament pictures and is an awesome photographer so please stop by his tent. He has served as our photographer for several tournaments and would be glad to assist you with choosing the perfect picture of your favorite player or team. We will also have available for sale our tournament program brochure that will highlight team information which will include team names and photos, tournament umpires and bios, area businesses and other pertinent information.
