RAY MATTER Last night the Rays finished a 9-game homestand with a 5-4 win in the rubber match with the Orioles they overcame a 3-0, 2ndinning deficit and 4-3, 7th-inning deficit, the fourth time this season they came back from at least a 3-run deficit to win, following July 22 vs. MIA, May 27 vs. BAL and Opening Day vs. BOS they avoided falling under.500 for the first time since the end of play on July 6 (43-44) it was the fifth straight time they won a game to avoid falling under.500. The Rays have been tied or leading entering the 9th inning in their last 6 games, but they are 2-4 over that span this stretch of being tied or leading in the 9th inning extends to 9 games since July 31. The Rays are 9-10 since the All-Star break and in their last 23 games, incl against teams entering the series under.500. ROAD TRIPPIN Tonight the Rays begin a 9-game road trip against Toronto, New York and Boston it is their fifth of six three-city road trips this season the Rays went 1-3 on their last road trip, a 4-game series in Baltimore, and they were outscored, since May 31, the Rays are 7-20 (.259) on the road, 2nd-worst in the majors to the Royals (.258) prior to this, they were to start the season and 9-1 from May The Rays have allowed double-digit runs in three consecutive road games for the first time in franchise history they have allowed at least 5 runs in seven of their last 8 road games and double-digit runs in four of their last 5 road games they have allowed 15 hits (or more) in three consecutive road games for the second time in franchise history, following June 20-22, 2002 at SF/COL. ROSTER MAKEOVER Eleven players on tonight s active roster weren t on it the last time the Rays and Blue Jays met, June 13 at Tropicana Field five were promoted from the minors (Yonny Chirinos, Adam Kolarek, Brandon Lowe, Jaime Schultz, Hunter Wood), four were acquired via trade (Jalen Beeks, Ji-Man Choi, Tyler Glasnow, Michael Perez) and two were reinstated from the disabled list (Jake Faria, Kevin Kiermaier). Only 15 of the 41 players (36.6 pct.) from last year s season-ending active roster or disabled list remain in the Rays organization. Only one player remains in the organization from the managerial debut of Kevin Cash on April 6, 2015: Kevin Kiermaier. Only four players have been on the club s active roster all season, without a stint on the disabled list or in the minors: C.J. Cron, Sergio Romo, Mallex Smith and Jesús Sucre. MINOR MATTERS In its recent update, Baseball America listed the Rays at No. 2 in its Organizational Talent rankings of prospects, up from No. 5 in January per Baseball America: Scouts rave about the Rays talent both on the mound and in the field. This is a system loaded with future big league bats with an impressive amount of projectable pitchers as well.
