ROSTER MOVE Prior to last night s first pitch, the Rays placed RH Yonny Chirinos (right forearm strain) on the 10-day DL and recalled LH Ryan Yarbrough from Triple-A Durham in addition, yesterday the Rays acquired minor league RH Sam McWilliams and minor league LH Colin Poche (poh-shay) from the Diamondbacks as the players to be named to complete a Feb 20 three-team trade with the Yankees McWilliams and Poche were ranked by Baseball America as the Nos. 13 and 29 prospects, respectively, in the Diamondbacks organization entering the season. RAY MATTER The Rays are 1-2 in their last 3 games on the heels of an 8-game winning streak, tied for the 3rd-longest in franchise history they are 9-2 over their last 11 games, improving from 4-13 (.235) worst record in the AL East and 3rd-worst winning pct. in the majors to (.464), 5.5 games ahead of the Orioles in the division the Rays are 12-7 since a 1-8 start to the season, and 7-3 in their last 10 games on the road. The Rays have come from behind in 6 of their last 9 wins. Yesterday at DET, the Rays were held to 1 run (or fewer) for the fifth time this season they were held to 1 run or fewer in 4 of their first 13 games, but only once in their last 15 games since April 14. Strangely, last night was the eighth time this season the Rays have allowed 2 runs or fewer, and they are 3-5 in those games they have allowed 3 runs or fewer 11 times and are 4-7 when doing so. SERIES-LY SPEAKING Today the Rays have a chance to clinch a fifth consecutive series victory for the first time since July 11-30, 2014 vs. TOR, at MIN/STL, vs. BOS/MIL it would be the first time they won every series of a 3-city road trip since May 29 June 7, 2015 at BAL/LAA/SEA. With a win today, the Rays would go 6-2 on this trip to Baltimore (2-0), Boston (2-1) and Detroit (1-1 thus far) it would be the seventh time the Rays went 6-2 (.750) or better on a 3-city road trip and the first time since going 9-2 (.818) from June 27 July 6, 2014 this is the second of four consecutive 3-city trips to start the season. CONSIDER THIS The Rays have failed in their two attempts to return to.500 (Sun at BOS, last night at DET) for the first time since they were 1-1 the Rays are 2 games under.500 despite a wide range of obstacles: Their 1-8 start matched 2011 for the worst 9-game start in franchise history they went on an 8-game losing streak tied for the 4th-longest of the Rays era (since 2008) after their come-frombehind, 6-4 win on Opening Day vs. BOS they became the sixth team and second AL team since Baseball Reference data is available (1908) to win on Opening Day and lose their next 8 games. They opened the season with three regular members of the starting rotation following the injury to Nathan Eovaldi, and used a bullpen day as needed as the fourth and fifth starters they have used seven different starting pitchers, tied for 4th-most in the majors, and just one shy of their total from all of last season. They placed two-time Gold Glove winner and 2015 AL Platinum Glove winner Kevin Kiermaier on the disabled list in mid-april, the third consecutive season he has missed significant time. They went 2-6 on their first road trip, with an average first-pitch temperature of 44 F including 4 games at 40 F or lower. They have played 10 games against the Red Sox, who are tied with the Diamondbacks for best record in the majors, and 2 games against the Yankees, tied for the 3rd-best record in the majors. They have played more games on the road (15) than at home (13). RAYS vs. TIGERS This is the third of six meetings between the Rays and Tigers this season, as the Tigers visit Tropicana Field from July 9-11 the Rays went 5-2 last season (3-0 at home, 2-2 on the road), just the second time in the past seven seasons they have won the season series over the Tigers (4-3 in 2014) the Rays have won only one of their last seven series at Comerica Park, since the start of the 2011 season (won 3 of 4 in 2014). The Rays are 6-2 (.750) against the AL Central this season, compared to 7-13 (.350) against all other opponents. SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN This is the first of six consecutive series against teams that finished last season below.500 the Rays don t face another postseason team from last year until May vs. BOS so far this season, the Rays are 6-9 (.400) against teams that made last year s playoffs and 7-6 (.538) against teams that missed the postseason. CLOSE SHAVES The Rays have played three consecutive games decided by 1-run margins (1-2) this is the third time this season they have had a string of at least three straight 1-run games: also March 30 April 1 (0-3) and April 8-13 (2-3) the Rays have played a major-league-most 14 games decided by 1 run, the most by an AL team within their first 28 games since the 2007 Tigers (14) the Rays are 5-9 (.357) in 1-run games, but are 5-4 after an 0-5 start seven of their 10 games against the AL-best Red Sox have been decided by 1 run, and the Rays are 1-6 in these games since 2016, the Rays are (.394) in 1-run games, 3rd-worst winning pct. in the majors and 2nd-worst in the AL over that span. TURN AROUND, BRIGHT RAYS The loss on April 8 at BOS dropped the Rays to 1-8, the worst record in the majors at the time and tied for the worst 9-game start in club history, and dropped them to 0-5 on the road they were averaging 3.00 runs per game, tied for 2nd-lowest in the majors, and ranked 29th and 28th in avg. and OBP, respectively since then: The Rays are 12-7 (.667), tied with the Cardinals for the 4th-best record in the majors behind the Yankees, D-backs and Red Sox. The Rays are 7-3 (.700) on the road, tied for 2nd in the majors. The Rays are averaging 5.32 runs per game, 6th in the majors they lead the majors with a.294 batting avg. and a.360 OBP.
