1 BALTIMORE ORIOLES GAME NOTES Oriole Park at Camden Yards 333 West Camden Street Baltimore, MD Friday, August 30, 2013 Game #133 Road Game #66 Baltimore Orioles (71-61) vs. New York Yankees (70-63) RH Miguel Gonzalez (8-6, 3.77) vs. LH CC Sabathia (11-11, 4.81) TONIGHT S GAME: The Orioles and Yankees meet in the opener of their three-game set and the fourth game of a nine-game road trip that began with the Birds dropping two of three in Boston and will conclude with three games in Cleveland September 2-4. VS. NEW YORK: The Orioles lead the season series, 7-5, with the Orioles going 5-1 in Baltimore and 2-4 in the Bronx Since the start of the 2012 season, the Orioles are against the Yankees in the regular season, with the Birds outscoring the Bombers in those 30 games The Orioles trail in the all-time regular season series, ( in Baltimore and in the Bronx) The Orioles are in their last 26 games against the Yankees after going in the previous 53 games In 2012, the Orioles won all three series in Yankee Stadium in the same year for the first time since 1976 It was the fifth time in O s history that they had won three or more series in a season in the Bronx (also 1976, 67, 66 and 65) The Orioles six wins in the Bronx in 2012 were their most since 1976 (eight). BAG MAN: After doubling Thursday, Chris Davis has 323 total bases, which is tied for 14 th -most in a season in club history He is on pace for 396 total bases for the year, which would shatter Brady Anderson s club mark of 369, set in 1996 If Davis reaches 396 total bases, he would finish in 37 th place on the all-time MLB single season list and would have 19 more than Miguel Cabrera had in last year s Triple Crown season. SERIES STRUGGLES: The Orioles have dropped six of their last 11 series and are in their 43 series In 2012, the Birds were in their 52 series The O s have nine series remaining (including this one), with two each against the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays, and one each with the Indians, White Sox and Rays. MONTHLY MASHER: Chris Davis has eight doubles and nine homers in August He has now had at least seven of each in a month four times this year Per STATS, Davis is just the fourth AL player to accomplish such a feat over the course of an entire season, joining Hank Greenberg (1937 Detroit), Ted Williams (1949 Boston) and Troy Glaus (2000 Anaheim) Davis is the only player in major history (either league) to collect at least seven doubles and nine home runs in four different months in one season (April, May, June and August). THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME?: The Orioles have made 39 errors in 132 games, a pace for 48 errors in 162 games The major league record for fewest errors in a 162-game season is 65 by the 2003 Seattle Mariners The 2013 Orioles lead the majors with a.992 fielding percentage, which, if maintained through the entire season, would be the best fielding percentage in baseball history, topping the 2007 Rockies.989 mark Per STATS, the Orioles are the first team in MLB history to post 100 errorless games by the end of August. CRUSH DAVIS: Chris Davis has 47 homers and is the third Oriole to hit 47+ homers in a season (Brady Anderson, 50 in 1996 and Frank Robinson, 49 in 1966) Davis 44 home runs as a first baseman are the most by an American Leaguer since Carlos Pena blasted 46 for Tampa Bay in 2007 Davis has an MLB-leading 85 extra-base hits, 16 more than Miguel Cabrera Per STATS, only two Orioles have led the majors in extra-base hits: Frank Robinson (85 in 1966) and Cal Ripken, Jr. (85 in 1991). HIT MAN(NY): Manny Machado has an MLB-leading 45 doubles on the year, which is two shy of Vada Pinson (47 for Cincinnati) for second-most by player in age-20 or younger season, behind Alex Rodriguez (54 in 1996) Machado is third with 167 hits and is tied for fifth with 49 multi-hit games He is on pace for 55 doubles, which would be one shy of Brian Roberts club record set in THE BOMB SQUAD: The Orioles lead the majors with 177 homers (19 more than any other club) and are on pace to hit 217, which would rank second in club history behind the 257 by the 1996 club Three teams (1985, 1998 and 2012) hit 214 to tie for second place The Orioles have homered in 104 of their 132 games The only other teams with as many as 90 games with a homer are Seattle (95) and Detroit (91) The 2012 Yankees homered in 131 games, the most in the majors since DRIVING THEM IN: Chris Davis (on pace for 149 RBI) and Adam Jones (on pace for 117 RBI) are on pace to become the first pair of Orioles to drive in 100 runs each in the same season since Aubrey Huff (108) and Melvin Mora (104) in 2008 It would be the 10 th time in club history the Orioles had two or more players drive in 100+ runs in the same season (also 1966, 1969, 1980, 1983, 1985, 1996, 1999, 2004 and 2008). THE SAVE-IOR: Jim Johnson recorded his AL-leading 41 st save Thursday He is the first pitcher in Orioles history to post two 40-save seasons He became the 21 st pitcher in MLB history to record consecutive 40+ save seasons Now has 92 saves over the last two seasons, becoming the 10 th pitcher in major league history to record as many as 92 saves over a two season span, joining Eric Gagne, Francisco Rodriguez, John Smoltz, Mariano Rivera, Dennis Eckersley, Trevor Hoffman, Randy Myers, Bobby Thigpen and Jose Valverde. BASH BROTHERS: Chris Davis hit 33 homers in 2012 and is on pace for 58 homers in 2013, while Adam Jones hit 32 in 2012 and is on pace for 33 this year If Jones reaches 30 this year, he and Davis will become the first Orioles teammates to each hit 30 or more homers in consecutive seasons It would mark the seventh season in club history where two Orioles hit 30 or more homers, joining 1966 (Frank Robinson and Boog Powell), 1969 (Robinson and Powell), 1987 (Larry Sheets and Eddie Murray), 1996 (Brady Anderson and Rafael Palmeiro), 2011 (J.J. Hardy and Mark Reynolds) and 2012 (Davis and Jones).
