1 BALTIMORE ORIOLES GAME NOTES Oriole Park at Camden Yards 333 West Camden Street Baltimore, MD Monday, July 2, 2012 Game #79 Road Game #37 Baltimore Orioles (42-36) vs. Seattle Mariners (34-47) RH Jason Hammel (8-3, 3.29) vs. RH Hisashi Iwakuma (1-1, 4.75) TODAY S GAME: The Orioles and Mariners meet in the first game of a three-game series and the first game of a seven-game road trip that will also take the Birds to Southern California for four games with the Angels This series is the first meeting between the Birds and Mariners this year They will meet again in Baltimore, August 6-8, and again in Seattle, September VS. SEATTLE: The Orioles won the season series in 2011, 4-2, as they went 3-0 in Baltimore and 1-2 in Seattle The Orioles lead the all-time series, ( in Baltimore and in the Emerald City) The Birds are at Safeco Field since it opened in 1999 Baltimore has won just three of 13 season series at Safeco, going 2-1 in 2004, 4-3 in 2005 and 4-2 in STARS IN THEIR EYES: The 2012 All-Star team was announced yesterday and the Orioles will be represented by three players: Adam Jones (2 nd selection), Matt Wieters (2 nd selection) and Jim Johnson (1 st selection) Additionally, Jason Hammel is one of five players to make the final vote for the last roster spot The last time the Orioles had more than one All-Star was in 2005, when four players were selected for the team Brian Roberts (starter), Miguel Tejada (starter), BJ Ryan and Melvin Mora The 2012 All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, July 10 in Kansas City. JIM DANDY: On Saturday afternoon, the Orioles acquired Jim Thome from the Philadelphia Phillies Thome, 41, is a five-time All-Star and is currently tied with Sammy Sosa for seventh place on the all-time home runs list with 609 He is second among active players in home runs behind Alex Rodriguez (642) and trails Barry Bonds (762), Babe Ruth (714) and Ken Griffey Jr. (630) among left-handed batters Thome is one of eight players in major league history to have 12 or more seasons with 30 or more home runs, joining Hank Aaron, Rodriguez, Bonds, Mike Schmidt, Ruth, Manny Ramirez and Jimmie Foxx In 67 career games at Oriole Park as an opponent, Thome has hit 18 home runs (one every 13.6 at-bats), scored 45 runs and driven in 45 runs He has hit two of the 65 home runs to land on Eutaw Street Thome s final hit for the Phillies was a walk-off home run on June 23 off Tampa Bay s Jake McGee. MAKING (ROSTER) MOVES: Including today, the Orioles have made 10 moves on the 25-man roster involving nine players in the last six days...they had not made a roster move in the 12 days between June 15 & 26. THE TURNAROUND: With one more win prior to the All-Star break, the O s will guarantee themselves a winning record at the break for the second time since 1998 The Orioles were at the break in OPERATION SHUTDOWN: The O s bullpen leads the majors with a 2.60 ERA (263.0IP, 76ER) & leads the AL with 16 wins Two of the top five relievers ERAs in the AL belong to Orioles: Pedro Strop (4 th -1.25) & Jim Johnson (5 th -1.30) Strop has pitched to an 0.69 ERA (26.0IP, 2ER) in his last 25 games since 4/24. HIT MAN: Wilson Betemit has hit safely in 11 straight games since June 18, including multi-hit efforts in five of his last seven games He has batted.472 (17-36) over the span, raising his batting average from.238 to.274 The five consecutive multi-hit games from June marks a career-high for Betemit He recorded multi-hit games in four straight games twice (July 15-18, 2006 and September 13-17, 2010). A CASE OF THE MONDAYS: The Orioles are just 1-7 on Mondays (0-4 at home, 1-3 on the road) Mondays and Wednesdays (5-6) are the only days of the week the Birds are below.500. BROKEN BATS: In the last 15 games (since June 15), the Orioles have just 92 hits (.197/.265/.298), the fewest in the majors over that span 27 of those hits have gone for extra bases (17 doubles and 10 home runs) Their.197 batting average since June 15 is tied with the Dodgers for lowest in the majors. SNAP OUT OF IT: Since going 8-for-17 with RISP on June 14 against Pittsburgh, the Birds are 13-for-89 (.146) with RISP over the last 15 games For the year, the O s are 11 th in the AL in average with RISP at.243 ( ).
