Brent Cox RHP Texas Ricky Romero LHP Cal State Fullerton Tonight s Starting Pitcher: Southern California freshman RHP Ian Kennedy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) will take the mount to start for Team USA tonight against Canada. Kennedy earned first-team All-Pac-10 and Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America honors after going 7-2 with a league-leading 2.91 ERA. Kennedy is a veteran of the USA Baseball program, having played for the Junior National team in the summer of 2002, helping lead the Red, White and Blue to a bronze medal in the IBAF World Junior Championship. He was drafted in the 14th round out of La Quinta High School by the St. Louis Cardinals. Quick Hits: LMU catcher Jonathan Higashi left the National Team Trials on Wednesday after signing a pro contract with the Texas Rangers. The National Team Trials roster is comprised of 28 sophomores, seven freshmen and one senior. Wednesday s summer opener was delayed 1 hour, 13 minutes by a rain and thunderstorm through the Triangle Area. 32 players are currently left of the original pool of 36 for the National Team Trials, with four still in Omaha at the CWS. Team USA is 44-9 against Canada dating back to 1987, including winning 10 of the last 13 since Manager Frank Cruz (Loyola Marymount) is in his second stint with Team USA. He was an assistant on the 2000 National Team. Travis Buck (Arizona State) had three walks last night to fall one short of tying the Team USA single-game record.

Zimmerman Muscles Up: Virginia sophomore third baseman Ryan Zimmerman (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored in last night s 9-2 win over Canada. His three-run home run in the eighth inning was a tapemeasure shot that cleared the 33-foot fence in left-center field. The All-ACC selection has shown in practice that he has a lot of power, but he entered the trials with only two career home runs in 612 career at-bats split between two seasons at Virginia and last summer with Peninsula ( ) in the Coastal Plaines League. Zimmerman hit.361 (90-for-249) with 16 doubles and 45 RBI for the Cavaliers this season. Slap Shot: USA Baseball and the National Hockey League (NHL) announced today that several of the 2004 NHL Top Prospects who will be in the Raleigh-Durham area prior to the NHL Entry Draft at the RBC Center, will appear at the USA Baseball National Team vs. Canada game on June 24 at 7:00 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP). The prospects will include six to eight of the anticipated top selections in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. The Carolina Hurricanes hold the # 8 selection, which means it is possible that a future Hurricane may be among the players signing autographs. Prior to the game, the NHL Top Prospects will don baseball jerseys of their respective countries and take the field for batting practice with Team USA and the Canadian National Team, before throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. The players will return to the field after the game for a free post-game autograph session.
